00:17individuals over the age of 60 who volunteered at least 100 hours a year
00:20reported lower rates of loneliness than others.
00:23The study tracked the volunteer activities of some 5,000 participants
00:26across a 12-year period between the years of 2006 and 2018.
00:30The findings add to a growing body of research,
00:33suggesting a link between volunteering and improved mental health.
00:36Conversely, research has found that loneliness and isolation in older adults
00:39is linked to higher mortality rates and reduced cognitive function.
