00:04This is Cassiopeia. It's the remnants of a massive supernova, and it's one of the most famous ones ever photographed
00:10by astronomers.
00:11But recently, they noticed something a bit off about its storied inner nebula. It's off-kilter.
00:16Cassiopeia A is around 11,000 light years away, but it's also one of the most studied cosmic objects in
00:21the whole galaxy.
00:22And recently, astronomers noticed that the explosion radius isn't moving outward uniformly.
00:27Astronomer Jack O'Vink from the University of Amsterdam has two theories about why that is.
00:32Writing in the study, quote,
00:33Either there's a hole somewhere, a kind of vacuum in the supernova material, causing the hot shell to suddenly move
00:38inwards locally, or the nebula has collided with something.
00:41The material of Cassiopeia is expanding at a rate of between around 9 million and 12 million miles per hour.
00:48But on the west side, it's now reverberating back inward at extremely high speeds as well, which they say likely
00:53points to a massive collision,
00:54which would likely first decelerate the shockwave, but then accelerate around the point of impact.
