00:00As states continue to legalize cannabis, its use is on the rise, especially amongst young people, which has many wondering,
00:06despite its medicinal uses, can smoking marijuana damage your lungs?
00:10Well, according to a new study published in the journal Respiratory Medicine, it's likely not as bad as previous studies
00:16may have suggested.
00:17The new study was conducted by tracking the lung function of some 1,173 participants, ages 21 to 30.
00:24But unlike other studies, this one separated the cohort into subsections of those who smoked marijuana, tobacco, neither, or both
00:31over the last nine years, finding that those who smoked tobacco and those who smoked both marijuana and tobacco had
00:36reduced lung function.
00:38They also discovered that those who smoked cannabis in addition to tobacco had no worse lung function than the tobacco
00:43group alone.
00:44However, those who smoked only cannabis over the nine-year period had no reduced lung function at all when compared
00:49to the group which abstained from both.
00:51With the authors writing, quote, cannabis does not appear to be related to lung function, even after years of use.
00:57These results contradict another recent study that found that those who smoked tobacco and marijuana were more likely to be
01:02diagnosed with emphysema later in life.
