00:00There's a new viral TikTok craze sweeping college campuses, and it's another one that could turn
00:05deadly. The viral trend involves mixing alcohol, electrolytes, and flavoring into an empty one of
00:10these, and they're calling it a blackout rage gallon, or Borg for short. It's a binge drinking
00:15mixture, and at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, school officials say that these
00:20concoctions were responsible for some 28 ambulance calls this past weekend alone,
00:24something the Associated Press reports was likely linked to the school's pre-St. Patrick's Day
00:29Blarney Blowout Celebration. The recipe isn't anything new, with Insider reporting that the
00:33beverage dates back at least to 2020. However, its recent popularity is concerning. Some claim that
00:38the addition of electrolytes keeps you hydrated while drinking it, but a gallon jug can hold a
00:43whole lot of alcohol, and drinking from a massive jug makes keeping track of portions extremely
00:47difficult. With the director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism at the
00:52National Institutes of Health, George F. Koob saying the recipe would kill the vast majority of people
00:57if followed and consumed, even over a full day, telling CBS News, quote,
01:01it is unknown how many students actually follow Borg recipes that call for a half a gallon of vodka,
01:06but doing so could turn deadly, depending on how much they end up consuming.
