00:00Hi everyone, I'm Antonella, 505 Games is Director of Global Community, working on the PC version of Death Stranding and
00:07Death Stranding Directors' Cup.
00:08Death Stranding is a game all about the importance of establishing connections and building bridges, and that's a theme we
00:14wanted to celebrate with our community.
00:16Earlier this month, we invited our players to post some questions for two people over at Kojima Productions that don't
00:23need much of an introduction.
00:24Today, I have the huge honor of sitting down with Mr. Hideo Kojima, Mr. Yoji Shinkawa, and Mr. Aki Saito
00:31to go through some of those questions from our community.
00:33We hope you enjoy this conversation with our friends over at Kojima Productions.
00:39Hi everyone, how are you all doing today?
00:45I've been working so much, I'm so tired.
00:50I did see on social media, I don't envy you at all.
00:58Did you get some sleep?
01:02He said, no, I haven't.
01:05Amazing.
01:06We've received a lot of questions from our community, and I'm going to try and, you know, we'll try and
01:12just reduce it a little bit.
01:14So, yeah, I guess we'll start with the first one.
01:17And this is actually a question to the pair of you.
01:20You've been working together for over 25 years now, and at your own, you know, you've got your own studio
01:25now.
01:26What is the key to a long-lasting relationship?
01:28What is the key to a long-term relationship?
01:57Siamo molto felice.
02:22now but we were so young when we first met we thought that we had so much age difference but
02:27probably not the key is probably we have different senses we kind of think and feel differently but
02:33the passion is the same and but since we feel a little different i think that's the key that we
02:39get along so well we kind of share the inspirations of course some are similar but majority is like
02:45different that's why we get along together i guess i really really like that and you know
02:50speaking of connections and relationships i think that brings us on quite nicely to our next question
02:56from one of our users which is for you mr kojima um you know this user says for me the
03:02help from
03:03other players and seeing the constructions in the world of death stranding was an iconic part of the
03:08atmosphere for the game and the unique uniqueness of the gameplay you know especially during those
03:13bt boss battles when you and your team were planning development for the game why was this the type of
03:18multiplayer chosen for the game and were there any other concepts or ideas that you explored
03:24um during the development phase and this user says you know thank you as always for bringing
04:04come spiegazioni di un'immagine di un'interazione
04:12Quindi ho pensato che sono iniziato.
04:42a show in connectivity and it's not a direct connection but indirect kind of connection i
04:48thought would really happen so that's why i put in this branding in this game
05:13well the simple you know thinking is like okay like a game of cards or chess or even sports i
05:20know that
05:21there is a winner and a loser distinctively but i thought maybe you know that's good for raising
05:27the bar of yourself to compete however i thought well there should be a way where everyone could
05:33be a winner and that's why i thought this connection was good to put in our game i really like
05:40that
05:40because as a community manager we want to enforce positive connections between people and positive
05:45interactions um so personally yeah big fan of this approach
05:55our next question is for you um mr shinkawa um to shinkawa san your art is always so refreshing
06:04and inspirational to look at i wanted to ask how much free reign has kojima san given you
06:09to create the characters or do you work specifically to his tastes do you add things that you like or
06:16is it a strict feedback style
06:18and you also talked in the call of the end of the company
06:21you have to be able to enjoy the description of the company
06:23you need to take advantage of me
06:24you have to create the character
06:27this is different from the audience
06:31you choose from the audience
06:34you know
06:38kind of thing will make sure
06:40you can tell him
06:44in you
06:46you know
06:46and those
06:48Non è vero, non è vero.
07:18over the years I kind of work on first Mr. Kojima's plot and I kind of digest that myself and
07:25then I
07:26draw up a couple of drawings and show Hideo how it is. He says okay or not good and then
07:32we kind
07:32of brush up from there. Sometimes he even says you know the things that were totally on a different
07:38direction by accident and happens and sometimes that grows but basically I think Hideo kind of
07:45really tries to pull the great part of me and that's how you know the process of the character
07:52actually going in a growth at the same time. So that's how we do it.
07:56That sounds awesome.
09:11In the past, he had this, you know, A4 kind of paper drawing, and it was all scribble. But of
09:16course, he became, we're all professionals now. So when I order something, he has this character A, character B, and
09:21image, and it's all laid out correctly. However, if I go to his room, I sometimes still find this scribbling
09:28on another paper, and I get inspirations of it. And we kind of sometimes grow that inspiration. And that's really
09:35fun. And we give feedback together.
09:37This is only possible because we're together. And we can't do this if, you know, I outsource to someone. So
09:43that's the real importance that I feel that I want to keep in the studio.
09:49I really like that. I really like that approach. It reminds me of actually when I was, I've got an
09:53art background, and I remember being at university and college, and sometimes it was those brainstorming sessions or those moments
09:59where you're just scribbling on paper where some of your biggest ideas come from. So I really like that.
10:10On to our next question. So this one comes from a user over on Weibo, and it's to you, Mr.
10:16Kojima.
10:18So this user asks, Mr. Kojima, from the perspective of game design, how does Death Stranding drive players to voluntary
10:25engage in constructing, and yet create an unparalleled sense of satisfaction and happiness?
10:32I'd like to know the thoughts behind this unique process.
11:02Thank you.
11:08Sì
11:43come stanno iniziando a fare un'altra parte.
12:05But I wanted to kind of clear this in Death Stranding.
12:08And it wasn't like the words getting like money in the game or like some advantages in the game,
12:14but thinking about what could we do for others.
12:17So and basically what I planned first was just it was nothing.
12:22You don't get anything, just likes.
12:23And we had this controversy where people didn't understand when I first explained it.
12:28And we had a lot of discussions.
12:30But after a while, when we created this system, the staff got really happy with the system and they understood
12:36it.
12:37So it was really difficult until we kind of made it to really test it out.
12:42But after it was apparent in the game, everyone was like cooperating as well.
12:48Even some staff saying, hey, why don't we do this infrastructure or this utility or why don't we create it
12:55together?
12:55You know, and that was the point that I was aiming in this system.
13:03I really like that.
13:04I think as a player myself, one thing I found, I recently jumped back, jumped back into director's cut.
13:11And, you know, I was trying to, again, familiarize myself with what I was doing, where I was going.
13:15But what I thought was like hugely wholesome was I was walking around the world and there were ladders out
13:20there ready for me.
13:21And it was like it was so nice.
13:23And it was like, OK, there are people here helping me.
13:26And I guess it kind of inspires you to do the same thing.
13:30So you want to go and do the same thing.
13:32You want to leave ladders or ropes or whatever for other users to come in and enjoy.
13:36So, again, you know, going back to my previous point, I really appreciate, you know, that kind of element in
13:42the game because it's something I'm a big fan of, that positive enforcement and just helping others.
14:19ma guarda ma l'elevano
14:21the real kind of goal here i thought was like after you play death stranding and you feel like what
14:28you said
14:29and if you step out in the real world out of your room you'll see the roads and the bridges
14:34and i want people to kind of feel like yeah someone had built this road and bridges in real society
14:41and i wanted to kind of make you know people feel the same way that felt
14:45that they felt in the playing the game in death stranding
14:49well i think your team did a phenomenal job because it works beautifully in game
14:55on to my next question again this is for you mr kojima if that's okay and it's quite a personal
15:06one i think um so for mr kojima sam struggles to find strength within within him to step up as
15:12a
15:12father of bb and learn to connect to others um do you see a bit of yourself in sam and
15:18and what extent are other characters development influenced by your own life experiences
15:23there are a lot of experiences of different people that are
15:26well a lot of other characters that are interested in like TikTok through my own life how do you feel
15:44like I'm not
15:46no come non ha dovuto inませんけど a battacu全部
15:52100% fictio inelka a tavola ma
15:56che di cargare da moro teいうこと a
15:57ma a lei da i tuoi well
16:00i think yeah to extend calling all creators
16:03such as artist or writers or musicians
16:06or actors i think the expression the
16:09people who does expression are the people
16:11have this influence when they create
16:14um a character or a story i think it really influences i can't really say which specific
16:21part however i can't say it's 100 fiction um so you know that's probably a normal thing for any
16:29creators yeah absolutely definitely i guess we move on to a slightly lighter question now for you
16:42this user here asked quite an interesting question something that i hadn't really thought
16:46of before until they asked and i was like oh that's a really good point um this user asks
16:50why are there um no such things as like planes in death strand in in a world view where science
16:56is pretty advanced um this user's asking should there be airplanes um that can cross the game
17:30so well actually this was a point that i wish that the users didn't realize to be honest but
17:38But in the world setting, in Death Stranding, the sky is filled with chiral, meaning that
17:45you can't really fly.
17:46It gets like the time kind of passes with the chiral density so high.
17:51So in that world, we don't have any satellites, we don't have any airplanes, or we don't have
17:56drones or anything that's flying.
17:58That's why you have to walk and traverse or travel.
18:02That makes perfect sense.
18:04Absolutely.
18:05It was just really quite an interesting question that I hadn't really thought of before,
18:09but that explains everything.
18:11I didn't even know what to do, so I didn't know what to do.
18:13I think we'll have to ask you to ask you.
18:15Thank you.
18:16Well, yeah, well, as I said, this was kind of something, a blind spot, exactly.
18:28But I think we worked out very well.
18:31Absolutely, for sure.
18:32Now, something we touched on, I guess, at the start of this conversation was around
18:36relationships.
18:37And, you know, something that I absolutely love to see as a community manager is how strong
18:42the connections can be between developers and publishers and our players, which brings
18:48me on quite nicely to this next question.
18:52You two together have, you know, inspired the works of many fans around the world, and the
18:57fan base keeps growing.
18:59And, you know, now social media is full of fan art, cosplay, theories, comments, stories
19:05about your work.
19:07Now, this user's question is, like the way you have inspired so many of these community
19:13members to create all this kind of content, do you ever look at the fan art of others and
19:19does that ever inspire, you know, what you do?
19:23And did you ever kind of go to the desk and implement something in-game that was actually
19:28inspired by maybe something you saw on social media from a fan or something like that?
23:09in Death Stranding and do any of the characters have anything special about them
23:13that you think most people might have missed?
23:39Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:58Yeah, yeah, yeah.
24:12Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:19Yeah, yeah.
25:51Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
25:52Yeah.
25:58Yeah.
26:09Yeah.
26:23Yeah.
26:30Yeah.
26:32Yeah.
26:37Yeah.
26:40Yeah.
26:42Yeah.
26:49Yeah.
26:54Yeah.
27:05Yeah.
27:07Yeah.
27:08Yeah.
27:14Yeah.
27:18Yeah.
27:18Yeah.
27:28Yeah.
27:30Yeah.
27:31Yeah.
27:44Yeah.
27:47Yeah.
28:00Yeah.
28:01Yeah.
28:03No, I like the fact you brought up Lou.
28:06I'll never forget playing through the game myself.
28:10And yeah, I was, you know, I'm not the most maternal person, but I found that, you know,
28:17I needed to protect Lou and if anything happened, I would be mortified.
28:21So I went on this emotional rollercoaster
28:24Playing through Death Stranding
28:25Something that I didn't expect
28:27From the initial get-go
28:28So thank you for giving players that experience
28:32Because I've never had that in a game before
28:38Amazing
28:44I think that is everything
28:48Oh no, actually
28:49I think, yes, that is everything
28:51I think we can wrap this up
28:52Now a huge thank you, Mr. Kojima
28:56A huge thank you, Mr. Shinkawa
28:58And of course, Mr. Aki Saito
29:00It's been an absolute pleasure
29:02It's an honour
29:03We at 505 Games absolutely love working with Kojima Productions
29:07It's a huge privilege to look after this community
29:12And yeah, a big thank you again
29:14For taking the time to sit down
29:16And answer some of these community questions today
29:22He said, I see your background
29:24I feel the love of the game already
29:28Oh, absolutely
29:29No, I've become a huge fan
29:30And it's always an honour to work on a game
29:33That you're a big fan of as well
29:35So thank you
29:36You know, on a professional level
29:38This is amazing
29:39As a gamer
29:40Yeah, this is an absolute privilege
29:43So thank you
29:44Thank you so much
29:49Thank you
29:50Thank you
29:51Thank you
