00:00Could I interest you in, as we welcome you back to Roswell Park, the Ride for Roswell launch party is
00:09just now underway.
00:11You might hear a commotion.
00:12There seems like a commotion, yeah.
00:14We've got like a version of Plinko over here.
00:16In a good way, Plinko, I can hear Plinko.
00:18There's wine.
00:18I think our audience can hear, you can't hear the wine.
00:21You will.
00:21At least not right now.
00:23Maybe after a few, a few glasses get drunk.
00:28Could I interest you in a little thing known as Reverse Eastern Conference Power Rankings?
00:37Sure.
00:38Hang on.
00:39Let me get the standings.
00:41I mean, I'm not even sure you need them.
00:43I need them just to remember who all the teams are, Mike.
00:46I'm 60 years old.
00:47Okay.
00:47No, that's fine.
00:48I forget things.
00:49You could put them in alphabetical order and do just as well.
00:52Right.
00:52I just need to see them all before I start ranking them.
00:58Reverse, in this case, Eastern Conference NHL Power Rankings, R-E-C-N, parentheses, P-R.
01:07Brought to you by Empire Electric, your local residential neighborhood electrician.
01:11How about it?
01:14Right there with the music.
01:15Did you tell Zach you were doing this?
01:16Did you tell Zach?
01:17I did not.
01:18He's just ready to go.
01:19I saved it.
01:20All right.
01:20I thought perhaps at three, I would, if you will, whip it out.
01:26Did not.
01:27What?
01:27Got to like 310 and thought, don't need it now.
01:29We'll save it.
01:31Five.
01:31Lots of people all around eating and drinking and talking.
01:35Yeah.
01:35Three.
01:35Now is when we need it.
01:36You were too busy hating Tampa Bay.
01:39The Lightning.
01:40I mean.
01:40And yeah, that was the whole thing.
01:42They are easy to hate.
01:44Aren't they?
01:45The Lightning.
01:45I have mostly liked them because they weren't really annoying to me in any way, shape, or
01:53form.
01:53But I think I will.
01:57That winning goal last night is reason enough.
02:00I think I'll manage to get there.
02:03Especially if they roll in here.
02:05What is it?
02:05A week from Monday now?
02:07April 6th.
02:07Right.
02:07Okay.
02:09And try, you know, if they're still going to.
02:11Oh, let's see if you guys are tough again.
02:16And then I'm going to be full on like hate, like level of the Boston Bruins.
02:20They were down 3-1.
02:22They were.
02:23Did you see the beginning of that game?
02:25I did not.
02:25I had a job to do.
02:26They were getting run over at the start of that game.
02:31And you'll love this.
02:32There was from both Olchuk and it was Boucher.
02:36And I can't figure out if Olchuk is really always teasing Boucher and Boucher hates it
02:43or whether they're really tight.
02:44But I think there's a chance it's the prior.
02:48He's always tweaking Boucher.
02:49Like, oh, his hotel.
02:52He's just always there.
02:55Like just poking Boucher.
02:57Anyway.
02:57I'm sure it's hilarious.
02:58Yeah.
02:59I mean, uproarious.
03:01The game starts.
03:03Minnesota scores.
03:04It's 1-0.
03:05And they're just running Tampa over.
03:07And, well, you know, Boucher, you know this.
03:10They were in Calgary on Sunday.
03:13And I didn't quite catch whether it was travel arrangements that they made
03:17or whether they got hung up because of travel difficulties or what.
03:21But, like, they didn't get home until 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon.
03:25And John Cooper was very concerned this morning that this might happen.
03:31That they'd be, you know, same thing.
03:33You'll hear it.
03:34I'm sure.
03:35Well.
03:35Tonight.
03:36It'll come up in pregame some way or another, whether Lindy says it
03:39or a player says it or Paul, whatever.
03:42Although there was an extra day.
03:43There was an extra day.
03:44Tampa somehow botched their rest day with travel.
03:48And so, like, you know, they're in tough here.
03:51Good team they're playing.
03:53And then I turned it off and watched another game.
03:56And I didn't get back to it until it was 3-3.
03:58I'm like, oh, I guess they found their legs.
04:01I guess.
04:03I didn't see the game until the 3-3 goal.
04:06They had a power play goal for 3-3.
04:07And then third looked pretty even to me.
04:09But.
04:09Yeah.
04:10Right.
04:10They won it.
04:12Okay.
04:12Well, the premise is pretty straightforward.
04:15The idea is to rank the 16 Eastern Conference teams in reverse order of quality.
04:23So, here we go.
04:2516.
04:27I think by almost any objective measure, whether it's do you want to be this team tonight, tomorrow night?
04:39In a month?
04:40July?
04:42Or next October?
04:45I really feel like Toronto is a good answer.
04:47Really?
04:48I really feel like they're.
04:49I was sure you were going Rangers.
04:50I think they are in real, real trouble.
04:52The Rangers don't even have.
04:56What the Leafs have could be a part of their problem, which is a superstar player that looks
05:03like he's shooting a hostage video every time he talks in front of cameras in Austin Matthews.
05:08The Rangers don't have an Austin Matthews caliber player.
05:12They almost did, but not anymore.
05:14They don't.
05:15So, like, that can cut both ways.
05:18I just think the way for.
05:20I think Toronto is probably going to fire everybody.
05:25The GM, the coach is done.
05:28I think the GM probably should be done.
05:32And who knows with Matthews?
05:35I don't know that he wants out.
05:38I just know what it would feel like watching him speak to the media as a fan.
05:45And I'd be like, this dude hates us.
05:48Or hates it here.
05:49Or hates his life here.
05:50Or whatever.
05:52And that's nowhere I want to be.
05:54You think he wants out?
05:55I think he wants out.
05:56I think it looks to me like he wants out.
05:59That might just be like he's just sick of talking to the Toronto media about Mitch Marner.
06:03Or whatever.
06:04I don't know.
06:05Answering the same questions for the last eight years.
06:07Yeah, he does not look.
06:09That would get old.
06:09He does not look like a happy person to me at all.
06:13Now, it's a miserable season and a lot can happen.
06:15And I don't know that he has said one word, you know, about the future or contract extension talks or
06:22anything.
06:22They also don't have their number one pick.
06:24No.
06:25Right.
06:25That's part of the reason why I think the GM is going to be fired.
06:27I mentioned we were talking to Flutu Shinzalo, who covers the Bruins yesterday.
06:32And I mentioned how he works for the Athletic.
06:34And I read a piece, I think James Myrtle maybe, with the Athletic about the Leafs and about how the
06:40trade last year that cost them that first-round pick.
06:43And Frazier Minton is a nice young player who will be in the lineup tonight for Boston.
06:48For Brandon Carlo, they got to that trade at like 2 o'clock last year on trade deadline day.
06:54They were entirely focused on trading Mitch Marner for Mika Rottenen.
07:00And when that trade blew up, and then later in the day, it was like a last-minute thing.
07:06Like, oh, okay, let's talk to the Bruins about Brandon Carlo.
07:08But Marner wouldn't go.
07:10Marner refused.
07:11Personal reasons.
07:12He didn't want to waive his no trade, which is, of course, within his right.
07:15But he did that, and they were sort of stuck and scrambled and threw together a trade that cost them
07:22a decent-looking young player
07:24and a first-round pick that's going to be in the top ten for a player that's doing really almost
07:31nothing for them.
07:32Okay.
07:32I mean, I'm not going to fight.
07:33So I think the Leafs are in really tough.
07:36So they're my pick for 16th.
07:39Okay.
07:40I get it.
07:41I mean, I don't know how to rebut much of that.
07:44Apparently I was really ready to go on the Leafs.
07:47Their draft status, like their prospect pool, I don't know.
07:50I just feel like they gave up a long time ago.
07:54Yeah.
07:55And, you know, maybe because they moved Panarin already, maybe they have, I'll say, 15 Rangers.
08:01Yeah, no, I agree.
08:02They're not far off of the Leafs.
08:06Yeah, I don't know what they're doing.
08:08It's funny.
08:08I was talking to my son Owen about this.
08:11He's following the league and, you know, whatever.
08:15He knows hockey.
08:17And that was the night we were watching the Rangers win the only game.
08:20They played Ottawa on Monday night.
08:21We're watching that game.
08:22I said, no, I get Panarin.
08:24I get any other veteran.
08:26You're dumping.
08:26You're in last place.
08:27You know, just try to get futures.
08:29You're like, what the hell happened with Keiondre Miller?
08:33Like, that's last offseason and, or even at the deadline.
08:37I don't remember.
08:38It was last year at some point they traded.
08:40That's a good, very good young defenseman that seemingly to me should be a part of any
08:48he's young enough to be a key piece of your rebuild, and they dumped him, which is weird.
08:54And so, you know, Owen said it was probably what he remembers is, like, they didn't want
09:00to feel like they wanted to commit the big contract to him.
09:03They didn't trust it in some way.
09:05And the player was kind of maybe sick of it already.
09:07So, like, let's just, you know, go on our way.
09:10Um, but that's, that's a weird, that's a weird trade to me, still.
09:16Um, and I don't know what else, I mean, Zabinijad just played his thousandth game.
09:21Congratulations on that.
09:22Oh, thank you.
09:23Uh, but I don't know, man.
09:26There's not, I mean, Adam Fox is nice.
09:28The goalie's great, but he's getting old.
09:31Aren't we all?
09:32Rangers are in tough.
09:3314.
09:35Washington?
09:39Yeah.
09:39I like, I like, I like Washington here more than like, who else?
09:45Philly, the Delta.
09:46Washington just has to be at an end at some point with Ovechkin.
09:51And that may, that may take a good while for them to figure out a way forward without him.
09:57Um, they already spun off Carlson.
10:00So I think, I thought this was happening to them three years ago.
10:05Uh, and to their credit, they staved it off.
10:07They had an excellent regular season last year.
10:10But weren't that good.
10:11And I think that showed eventually.
10:13And this year is a struggle.
10:15And I don't, there's a couple nice young guys there.
10:19The Hudson, the younger brother of Lane Hudson, Cole Hudson, just showed up.
10:22He looks nice.
10:24Uh, Ryan Leonard, or Riley Leonard, excuse me.
10:27I think it's Ryan or Ryan, Leonard.
10:29Joined out of college last year around this time.
10:32He looks promising, but Ryan Leonard, Riley Leonard is the Colts quarterback.
10:38Ah, that's an easy, Notre Dame.
10:41People make that mistake all the time.
10:42They do.
10:44Yeah.
10:44Washington's good there.
10:4613.
10:48Flyers?
10:49Yeah, I'll say, yeah, I would say flyers.
10:53Reverse Eastern Conference power rankings, everybody.
10:55It's happening.
10:55Feel it.
10:56All right, that's easy.
10:5712.
10:59Does it have to be Jersey?
11:00I don't think it has to be Jersey.
11:02If you're thinking about moving forward, like beyond this year, I would much rather be Jersey
11:09than Philly, I think.
11:11Well, we've hit Philly, right, just now?
11:15Yeah.
11:15Or did we not make that official?
11:17There's no one else to talk about that's out of it.
11:22No, I don't think we got to Philly.
11:24We had Washington.
11:2513 is Philadelphia or Jersey.
11:26Okay.
11:27Then I would say Philadelphia.
11:28Okay.
11:29No one else that we could mention.
11:31Right.
11:32I mean, the Flyers aren't even really out of it, technically, but Jersey probably is.
11:3712, Jersey.
11:38Or do you want somebody that's in contention over them?
11:40No, I'm tempted to, like, slag the Islanders, but Schaefer has changed that entire
11:47operation.
11:49Easy rookie of the year.
11:50Bad loss.
11:51Coasting, yes, but still.
11:54Your guy had an assist, at least.
11:56Yeah.
11:56I do really like, you know, the Devils have got, I think, the high-end guys, but I can't
12:02blow off the Islanders, so I'll say Devils.
12:04And then maybe the Islanders next.
12:06At 11?
12:07What about Pittsburgh?
12:12What does Pittsburgh need to do to, I mean, it's not a perfect case study for this question
12:21because those guys are legends, and most fans, you know, you want Sidney Crosby quintessentially,
12:28you want those guys on your team forever.
12:31So, you know, it's not like they should have traded Crosby or Malkin or Letang even.
12:36Right.
12:37It's not like that.
12:37But what's a year that sort of pays them off for going another year with those guys?
12:44I mean...
12:45Do they need one series win?
12:47What do they need to make it have been worth it?
12:50I can't see them getting more than that.
12:53I don't even know if I'll like them in a first-round series, honestly.
12:57Blown out last night.
13:00I think they miss.
13:01Colorado, but yeah.
13:02I think they miss.
13:04I know, right?
13:06It's...
13:06I mean, it's not crazy to think that that could happen.
13:12The Islanders would have to run them down.
13:13Yeah.
13:14Because they're still top three right now, Pittsburgh.
13:16Right, right.
13:16If we're at 11, I would put Pittsburgh next.
13:19Over, under...
13:21No, over.
13:22Like the Islanders.
13:23Schaefer's a lot.
13:24Right, he is.
13:26And even...
13:26Like, I'm not crazy about Detroit.
13:28Like, Detroit might be the next team that's been...
13:31They're not in right now.
13:32But that's been in the mix almost all year that I don't feel great about.
13:37Okay.
13:38Moving forward.
13:39So then 10 would be Detroit or Florida.
13:42I haven't even mentioned Florida yet.
13:45I think...
13:45They'll be back.
13:46I think, yeah.
13:46I think all Florida needs is a year off.
13:48I really do.
13:49I think they'll...
13:50They're not super young, but they're not...
13:53They're not Pittsburgh.
13:54They're not, like...
13:56The guts of that team.
13:57I mean, you gotta make a decision about Bobrovsky.
14:00That's a big deal.
14:01He's a free agent.
14:02So they're gonna need to figure that out.
14:06And...
14:06But the rest of it, to me...
14:08Barkoff will be back.
14:10And Kachuk is in his prime.
14:13And, you know, Marchand is pretty old.
14:16I think they need a year off and they'll be back next year, is what I think Florida.
14:19All right.
14:20So, I'm not writing these down like I should be.
14:2216 Toronto.
14:2415 Rangers.
14:2514 Washington.
14:2713 Flyers.
14:3012 Pittsburgh.
14:3311 Detroit.
14:34We skipped Philly somewhere.
14:36No, I said that.
14:37No, 12 is New Jersey.
14:4012 Jersey?
14:41Mm-hmm.
14:41Then 11 is Pittsburgh and 10 is Detroit?
14:46That's what I have down, yeah.
14:47All right, fine.
14:48At least somebody's writing these down.
14:50Good job, Zach.
14:51Nine would be Florida or a likely playoff team.
14:59Islanders or Florida?
15:00I think I want to go Islanders here.
15:05Thinking about Boston, too.
15:07Oh, they're listening.
15:10Yeah, I know I should be careful.
15:12You know, like, they're playing them tonight.
15:15I don't know.
15:16I just don't, I just don't think it, that's a, I don't think they're, I would put Boston
15:22next.
15:23I don't think they're that good.
15:24Above, in a bad way, Islanders or Florida?
15:30That's what I'm saying.
15:31Nine is Boston?
15:33Okay.
15:34You guys can, you know, you can outvote me.
15:36No, I don't know.
15:37I'm fine with that.
15:38But, I mean, Swayman has been great.
15:40He played last night, by the way.
15:42I assume that means we're getting Corpus Allo tonight.
15:44I will look into it.
15:45But I, for some reason, my, my, my.
15:48They could get a little.
15:49My go-to for that, I can't seem to access here for some reason, which is really weird.
15:54They could get a little nervy because they lost.
15:58Yeah, maybe.
16:00They were.
16:00I don't have it official.
16:01They were sleepwalking last night.
16:02They could.
16:03I mean, they're in a playoff race here, so they could feel like they got to go to their
16:07guy two nights in a row, but I'd be surprised.
16:10But we'll see.
16:11We don't know officially, like you said.
16:13Yeah, I like them.
16:16I think as much as we've been thinking Detroit was a team to fall out, I wouldn't be stunned
16:21if it were Boston.
16:23No.
16:23That fell out.
16:24No, Boston probably deserved to lose in Detroit head-to-head on Saturday.
16:29They just won.
16:30So they're nine?
16:31Yep.
16:32I forget the numbers.
16:33Yep.
16:33Eight?
16:35Islanders or Red Wings?
16:38I'll say Red Wings.
16:40Okay.
16:41Seven?
16:42Islanders.
16:42Okay.
16:44Six?
16:45It's all just window dressing for the good stuff.
16:48Columbus?
16:49These mid-teams.
16:50Columbus.
16:51Absolutely.
16:52Sure.
16:52Love it.
16:53Five?
16:55Ottawa.
16:56Carolina.
17:01I kind of love Carolina here.
17:03Yeah.
17:03Five.
17:04All right.
17:05Done.
17:06Tampa's better.
17:07Buffalo might be better.
17:08I say might be because I'm scared of everything.
17:10Montreal's better.
17:12Ottawa's better.
17:13There's your bottom four in the reverse Eastern Conference power rankings.
17:16All right.
17:17Carolina five, four.
17:19I got to go Ottawa next.
17:20Me too.
17:24Nice win.
17:25Back-to-back road wins.
17:27Yep.
17:28Last two nights.
17:29They get tonight off, I guess.
17:30They're in that.
17:31Yeah.
17:31And that put them there in the wild card spot, right?
17:34Yeah.
17:34They're a point up on the Islanders.
17:36They are in.
17:36Yep.
17:37No.
17:37They're tied with the Islanders.
17:38They're tied with the Islanders.
17:41Maybe they're not in.
17:42They played one fewer game, so they have the leg up.
17:44They have six more regulation wins than the Islanders.
17:47That also helps.
17:48But, yeah, they're in the spot, Ottawa, right now.
17:51They're four?
17:52They're four.
17:53Three.
17:54Montreal.
17:56I guess.
17:58What's the argument against?
18:03I don't know.
18:04Yeah.
18:06Buffalo is – I would give Buffalo the nod on – I love Montreal.
18:10I've said it all year.
18:12I've kind of stopped saying it now because the playoffs are coming,
18:14and I don't want to sound like I love Montreal, but I love that team.
18:18I love watching that team play.
18:20They are a fun team to watch.
18:22They will make us insane if they play the Sabres in a playoff series.
18:26I don't need that.
18:27There is a lot of hot, young talent there.
18:30Hudson, to me, will be a Norris candidate maybe as soon as next year.
18:37I don't need help going insane.
18:39He is unreal all over the ice, the way he moves.
18:42He's just incredible.
18:44Anyway.
18:45Sergeant Peepers at home, our cockatiel.
18:48So we move Sergeant Peepers out into the main room.
18:52I'm not even sure why, but, you know, it's getting to be nicer out
18:57and give Peepers a look at the birds are showing up and the sunlight.
19:02We're going to try to not let her out, unlike her predecessor,
19:06try to keep her in the house.
19:08But I'm telling you, the last week, it is just constant chirping.
19:16And I am starting to – I'm one step away from Googling,
19:20has anybody lost their mind having a bird that peeps every three seconds?
19:28Surely people have.
19:30Do they know it?
19:31I'm not sure if they know it.
19:32Many people would have been subjected to this and have been driven insane.
19:35And, look, I'm not going to do anything drastic here.
19:38Right.
19:39I'll leave before I let Peepers leave.
19:41But I'm telling you, it is like – except for sleeping hours,
19:44and I'm not even sure of this.
19:46Yeah, right.
19:46It's just, you know, she wakes me up,
19:50and then the last two days I've been home alone for a few hours in the morning.
19:54It's just all the time.
19:56It's constant peeping.
19:58And she doesn't say words.
20:01Right.
20:02Her predecessor, who's not back yet, would say words and whistle songs.
20:07Sorry, I'm laughing.
20:08And she – well, he's not.
20:09How long has that been?
20:10A few years.
20:11Yeah.
20:12But Peepers is really just one note.
20:15That's tough.
20:16It's constant one note peeping.
20:21So I don't need any help going insane.
20:22I don't need the Canadians.
20:23That is like almost to me some version of a jackhammer.
20:27Like I know it's a very different sound, but if it's repetitive,
20:31it's the same sound over and over again.
20:33That's exactly what a jackhammer is.
20:35Anything like that.
20:35A beep.
20:36Oh, my God.
20:36Like a smoke alarm with the battery isn't –
20:38Yeah, right.
20:38– is replaced.
20:39Yeah.
20:39Where it's just every few seconds it beeps.
20:41There's a living, breathing animal in your house that's acting like a smoke alarm.
20:44And you set your heartbeat to it.
20:46Like you just sort of know –
20:47Yeah, yeah.
20:47Like the hatch and loss or something.
20:49You know in a certain number of seconds there's going to be –
20:51Right.
20:52My record –
20:52And if you're trying to sleep through it, you might like hear it like,
20:56oh, it seems like it's been longer.
20:59Maybe it stopped.
21:00Maybe – oh, maybe I can get – oh.
21:02There it is again.
21:03Yeah.
21:04That's the worst.
21:04And then you can get to the point where you're like, is she okay?
21:07Right.
21:07You don't hear it for a little bit.
21:08Right.
21:09Are we sure she's okay?
21:10Right.
21:11Two.
21:12Sabres.
21:13Yeah, me too.
21:15I can't –
21:15Me too.
21:16I can't just blow –
21:17I can't just blow past Tampa.
21:19I don't.
21:20I don't want to do it.
21:21The goalie –
21:21I'm afraid to do it.
21:22We'll see about this Hedman thing, like how long that lasts once we get any information on it.
21:27If you haven't heard, as our show was beginning today, we learned that Victor Hedman was taking a personal –
21:34a leave of absence for personal reasons.
21:35We don't know what that is, how long it may last.
21:39You know, we've been through this as a fan base twice this year with Darlene, and thankfully everything turned out
21:45well there.
21:46I believe Carolina, his fiancée, is here now, back in Buffalo, so good for them.
21:52So best to Victor Hedman, but that's a huge piece of that team, and we'll see when he gets back.
21:58This Radish, though, he's more annoying to me than Hedman.
22:03I've never had to worry about Hedman, like when it was important.
22:05I cannot wait until somebody gives him $9 million a year this offseason, and he scores 12 goals for them.
22:13I mean, or it's like a stick in the face or something.
22:15Like, that'll be all right.
22:16Just – this guy's tough.
22:18Just really demonstrative, and again, that goal that they had called back Minnesota last night, he gets cross-checked, like
22:27kind of –
22:28you wouldn't have known it from the announcers who all thought it was basically a capital offense.
22:33Crime scene.
22:34It's just sort of like a stick in the – the kind of one you get away with 9 out
22:38of 10 times in a hockey game.
22:39Would Lindy have called it a push in the pants?
22:41Maybe.
22:42Remember the push in the pants?
22:43No, actually.
22:44It was Breer on Ovechkin near the Sabre bench in a – you know, when it was hot.
22:52Like, it mattered.
22:54And he got called – I think it was – I'm almost sure it was Breer.
22:57Jitnick would have been gone by then, I think.
23:01So, yeah.
23:02And late in the game, they called a penalty, and after the game, Lindy was objecting to the penalty.
23:07I mean, it was just a push in the pants.
23:10This was a push in the shirt, the lower back area.
23:15Yeah.
23:15It just didn't seem like it had to be a problem, but Radish, like he crumples, and then he turns
23:22a little bit in the direction of the goalie's legs.
23:24And, you know, if you really didn't care about drawing a penalty and just being able to complain about it,
23:30you'd get up.
23:31Right.
23:31This guy doesn't get up.
23:32You know, he's basically dead.
23:34He's just laying on the ice on top of the goalie, and the goal is scored, and like three lightning
23:38players immediately are like, what?
23:40How about try to stop the play?
23:42Yeah.
23:43No?
23:43We're just going to whine and complain?
23:45Yep.
23:45I hate them.
23:47One, Tampa.
23:49Tampa.
23:50I'm so excited to hate somebody in hockey.
23:52They've earned at least that.
23:53I mean, I think.
23:54It's so nice to hate a different team other than the Sabres.
23:58Right.
24:00Mike Schopen, the Bulldog at Roswell Park.
24:02More next here on WG.
