00:02transitioning to the top rangers news of the week and that's drew fortescue is in town
00:09pearl river boy don bosco boy and o'brien i guess we'll say boston college boy
00:18no we love we love the local angle we love a new face to talk to and a new player
00:23to add to the
00:23mix um he signed his three-year entry-level contract and reported straight to new york
00:29the plan is for him to play after he gets a couple practices under his belt i'm guessing that could
00:35be friday against the blackhawks but we'll see the rangers were willing to burn a year of his elc in
00:42order to get him some nhl experience now in preparation for a full pro season next year
00:48they liked how it worked with gabe perot um even though he didn't end up playing uh every game he
00:53was up here for at the end of last season this that's fortescue up to be uh an rfa in
00:59summer of
00:592028 too so um what's your scouting report on him brian and what do you know about uh what do
01:06you
01:06think of the signing well i think it's uh if he can get to where he projects that's a need
01:13you know
01:14they need some middle pairing defense i think they're thin back there yeah and you know it's
01:21interesting how you know when the cba changed right i was a senior i had an opportunity to sign after
01:30my
01:30junior season and then i was a senior and there was a new cba so like my bonuses would have
01:37been cut
01:37into like a fifth of what i potentially could have gotten so la at the time wasn't really necessarily
01:44that worried about me going ufa um i was grandfathered into the old cba now we've seen with
01:51kevin hayes and jimmy bc we've seen with adam fox you know players that are willing to wait
01:56play their fourth season after they're drafted and decide maybe i'll sign anywhere because the bonuses
02:05would line up the same so there's a certain leverage that these players have now yes um i
02:13don't think there's i mean and they're within their rights if you are drafted and developed and you go to
02:21development camp and there's some communication i think most times uh you should probably sign with
02:27the team that put assets into you and use capital as a player that did that there's some loyalty
02:35there but as we've seen in pro sports uh if you have leverage use it because that's what teams do
02:41that's what management does and players should do it too so the fact that you know he's going to burn
02:46a year that's just that's part of that's part of the deal now now that is what teams have to
02:52do to
02:53entice players to sign to get them in their system to get their control and then you can do what
02:58you
02:58think is best for player and team at that point as long as you get that player to sign so
03:03it'll be
03:04interesting i like the fact that they're gonna let them practice a little bit um i remember
03:10signing an ato after i signed my entry level that was starting the following season and
03:15like i showed up at 7 30 in the morning in new hampshire driving from school where i was at
03:20the
03:20bar the day before and the coach was like well do you want to play tonight all new gear all
03:26new stuff
03:26didn't know i know oh boy made a game i was like i i can't it was the worst player
03:31on the ice i
03:31couldn't do anything i didn't know but of course you couldn't say no no you can't exactly yeah i
03:37can play uh the fact that they understand that and it's kind of like why would you do that just
03:43wreck a guy um but it ended up working out for me it made me better in the long run
03:47too but
03:48it's it's a good way to start i mean the league's hard enough so it's exciting it should be exciting
03:54and you know he's going to make mistakes everybody's going to make mistakes no matter how you play but
03:59it'd be cool just to see uh it's a new look you'll have some adrenaline and that you know that
04:05spot i
04:06think in that position on the rangers in terms of the depth uh needs to be added to so it's
04:12a good
04:12signing you uh you're mentioning of the contract structure made me want to take a peek at the way
04:18that his is and um per pugpedia his average annual value is 950 000 base of 700 775 at least
04:29in 2025 26
04:30and he's got 80 000 in performance bonuses if he plays 10 games so that's in there he's got a
04:39signing he's got that's the performance but he's got signing bonus 95 000 in each year um
04:45um yeah and like i said it has them projected to be a rfa is there any b bonuses in
04:54there do they list
04:54that i don't see anything so it's interesting there's certain ways where you could add to the
05:02aab with other bonuses if you add certain bonuses now that aren't even attainable it just opens the
05:10door for yeah it's a higher higher i mean that's usually for first rounders and high first yeah
05:17yeah um yeah i mean he'll have an opportunity so if he can hang around it's down to the wire
05:25though
05:25if he could play 10 games yeah i think what did i say friday i think friday if he plays
05:31every game
05:32past friday like friday and out i think he would he would hit it um because i think there's 12
05:37games
05:37left 11 i don't even know um might be 11 now yeah um yeah the one thing that i have
05:46heard about drew
05:46is that it's the breakout passes the breakout passes are crisp they're clean they're effective
05:53and i think that the rangers could definitely use a little bit of help in that department as well so
05:59um yeah should be really exciting to see another guy make his nhl debut this season the rangers have
06:05had so many um which definitely signifies a bit of a changing of the guard here
