00:00What makes a house a home?
00:03Homes full of style and character are competing for the title of Home of the Year.
00:09Making the tough decisions are design legend Hugh Wallace.
00:14This kitchen is the three F's. Functional, fun and fantastic.
00:19Award-winning architect Amanda Bone.
00:21When I walk in here, what I see is overly traditional.
00:26It's too much, there's just too much.
00:28And award-winning design consultant Siobhan Lahm.
00:32I'm lost for words, Amanda. I have no idea what you're talking about.
00:36And this year, it's not just their scores that they'll have to decide.
00:40After the episode's winner has been revealed,
00:42we will get the chance to use our golden key for one of the runners-up.
00:46Oh, so exciting!
00:51The search continues for Ireland's Home of the Year.
01:00After living and building in Australia, Christine and Mark developed this contemporary home in Wicklow.
01:07The original thought process was inspired by Australian architecture.
01:11We really like the style of some of the more modern houses over there.
01:14The overhang is great because the temperature doesn't fluctuate in the house.
01:18It stays consistent whether it's really hot outside or it's lashing rain and wintry.
01:23You can use the outside space even when it's raining in Ireland, and that's a lot.
01:27I think the permanent elements of the house have a relatively consistent colour palette in terms of black, white, gold.
01:34And then it's layered down on top of that with pink cabinets or purple cabinets or whatever.
01:41I think a bathroom, you can totally put some personality in there.
01:44It's a small space, and, you know, people love it.
01:46They come out of there going, oh my God, your bathroom is amazing.
01:49And, you know, I love hearing that.
01:50And it makes me feel good every time I go in there.
01:53So really, it's just for me.
01:56This is my favourite spot in the house, sitting here at this kitchen stool.
02:00It's where we come together as a family every mealtime, and the kids come and share their stories during the
02:05day.
02:06And I can come, have my coffee, look down in the morning at the sea and see whether it's a
02:10swim day or not.
02:11Our home is a busy home, you know, and that's what we built the home for.
02:17To have people around us, to have family around us, and to share it with them.
02:21So, yeah, I'm really proud of it, because we do, and it has worked out that way.
02:25So, yeah, I'm happy.
02:27The judges must now assess the home armed with only the basic facts about the property and its owners.
02:34Well, this new-built home is definitely making a statement on the exterior.
02:38One of my favourite moves is an overhang.
02:40And on a day like today, you can really appreciate it.
02:43Just perfect.
02:46Wow, look at that staircase.
02:51Well, the overhang was a good start, and we walked into a great entrance hall.
02:56It's spacious, it's bright, and the materials and the colour tones, they work with what we saw on the outside.
03:03Entering this hall, that staircase is just fantastic.
03:08The detail, the way that you can't see how the glass is held on.
03:14Let's have a look in here.
03:16Oh, so it's a gorgeous little playroom.
03:21Now, the magnificent downstairs bathroom.
03:26It's just wonderful.
03:27To me, this is what a downstairs guest bathroom is all about.
03:30Fun, conversation piece.
03:33I don't understand it, and personally, I don't want to look at it.
03:37I actually just want to stand here and appreciate all the great design moves in this entrance hallway.
03:51Look at the height of those windows.
03:54Oh, what a fantastic scale and size of the island years, and we have the homeowner's favourite spot.
04:03You know, sitting here is just wonderful.
04:06I've got this view out through that elongated window, which is the same height as the counter.
04:13So, it's like looking out into the canopy of the trees.
04:16Okay, I want to see what you're seeing.
04:18Okay, that's brilliant.
04:20I mean, look at the layout of the kitchen.
04:21Everything's in the right place.
04:24It's so spacious that that beautiful floor has continued throughout.
04:27I think the colour tones are great.
04:29Siobhan, you have to come over here.
04:31I got to see what you have to do.
04:31You have to look at this.
04:32Oh, that is stunning.
04:34Isn't that great?
04:35That is stunning.
04:35I mean, of course, this is a favourite spot.
04:37You've got that view.
04:38And I think another reason this might be the favourite spot is this is a family home.
04:43This is the heart of the home, the kitchen.
04:45But also, you have the dining room here, the back garden here.
04:48So, I'm sure the kids are running around.
04:50It's also a spot where you could just pause and rest.
04:58Now.
04:59Now, look at this.
05:03So, from where I'm standing, the kitchen and dining, it looks slick.
05:07It's monochromatic.
05:08We've got our beautiful marble.
05:09We've got our black, handleless cabinets.
05:11And then I turn.
05:13It just feels completely at odds with this kitchen dining.
05:19Oh, I don't agree.
05:20When you look at the little bathroom we were in, those fabulous wallpapers.
05:24And if you like, they've been translated in here, in terms of the cushions, the blush pink, the flowers.
05:32My only comment is, when I get here, is I have downlights in the kitchen dining area, and I have
05:40four downlights here and one lamp.
05:42And there's no dimmer switches.
05:45Standing here, I'm really enjoying this home.
05:48Because what I can see is, I can see right through the hall and out to the front of the
05:52garden.
05:52And also, when I'm looking at the kitchen, that very much is the same statement as we witnessed on the
05:58front of the home.
05:58But when I turn here, it's something completely different, it's jarring.
06:02And I think if the homeowners wanted to do that, they should have done it in a room which was
06:06separate to the open plan.
06:07I agree.
06:17Whoa, look at that view.
06:21This is a beautiful, restful room.
06:24It's quite serene.
06:25I think that's down to that moss green colour on the walls.
06:28But also this view, it's incredible.
06:30It's like we're in the trees.
06:32I think in terms of textures, these homeowners have done layering so, so well in this bedroom.
06:38It feels restful, but sumptuous.
06:40It's really nicely balanced.
06:42I'd say.
06:43I have to take my shoes off.
06:45The softness of this carpet.
06:47It is beautiful underfoot.
06:48And it's the contrast between this and the polished concrete floor downstairs.
06:55And it makes sense because this is a bedroom.
06:56This is about tranquility.
06:57It's about escapism.
06:59It's about relaxing.
07:00I think what the homeowner has done here is they have created that atmosphere.
07:04For me, I think this is an exceptional main bedroom.
07:08Sheer luxury.
07:12The home will now be marked out of ten.
07:14One score will be held back until the judges have seen all three homes, when their combined
07:18scores will be revealed.
07:20These homeowners have created a spacious contemporary home.
07:24The kitchen is a great example of the homeowners' modern design sensibility.
07:27Yet within the same space, we also have more traditional heavy pieces of furniture, multiple floral displays, and a switch
07:34to a summer cottage colour palette.
07:40The home owners show confidence in creating a modern home full of style.
07:46This is an inspirational, delightful, and fun-filled family home.
07:51And I'm giving it a nine.
07:54From the outside, this home makes a strong statement.
07:58Inside, it's generous, light-filled, and well laid out.
08:04When taking on this self-built modern home in Clare, Kelly and Fiacro wanted to create something truly unique, while
08:11maximizing the beautiful surrounding landscape.
08:14I see a lot of L-shaped bungalows, and I just wanted something a bit different.
08:19And this allowed us then to maybe kind of have the house separated into two wings, if you like.
08:24So we have the main bedroom in one wing, and then we have the everyday kitchen, living, and dining in
08:30the other wing.
08:31I think the interior of this home is minimalist.
08:35You have the kind of, say, wow outside.
08:37So we didn't really want to do anything major inside.
08:41It would be catching your eye too much, or, you know, it's just neutral, calm, and relaxing.
08:46This is my favourite spot in the home.
08:49I have a view here on the left, out the window, and also straight ahead in the big sliding doors,
08:55and just absolute relaxation to sit down here in the evenings watching telly in front of the fire.
09:00Very proud of the home, yes.
09:02It's our dream home, I think.
09:04We finally got there in the end, so we're making no more changes.
09:11Well, great piece of modern contemporary architecture in the shape of a U.
09:17But I particularly like the timber cladding on both gables.
09:20When we were walking up to this home, it was just wild, beautiful Irish landscape.
09:25So I'm just struck by, you know, the modernity of this home.
09:29And I hope the restraint shown on the exterior follows through to the interior.
09:33Shall we go in?
09:35Yes.
09:40Oh my.
09:42This is enormous.
09:44It's like a gallery.
09:46For me, there's a sense of freedom and a sense of spaciousness, which makes sense with what's outside the door.
09:52That expansive horizontality of the landscape.
09:55In terms of the colour tones, the white walls, the pale coloured timber floor, they align with that restraint that
10:01we saw on the outside.
10:12What I really like is a mirror in the kitchen because it just reflects the light and it also reflects,
10:19funny enough, the views to the outside.
10:20But when I look at the kitchen here, thank goodness you're in it, Siobhan, because this kitchen needs a little
10:30punch of colour.
11:00And I hope that our focus is out there.
11:03Let's go into the living room.
11:07Isn't this great to step down?
11:10I love it.
11:11And look, favourite spot.
11:14Oh.
11:15Sitting here is wonderful.
11:18I mean, look at the extensive views and the layering of the different colours and textures and plants and trees
11:24and mountains.
11:25It looks like it goes on forever.
11:28It makes so much sense that that's the favourite spot you've got.
11:31You've got your cosy fire here.
11:33Stepping down into this room is a great move because it creates a much higher floor to ceiling height and
11:39they've used that to put in that trough light all the way around.
11:43I love trough lights in living rooms.
11:45So, at night time, this must be a little cocoon of calm.
11:58What do we have here?
12:00Oh, it's a boot room.
12:01Oh, it's so spacious.
12:05What I love is the black.
12:07It's so good to have some contrast in this home and there's so much storage.
12:11So, I mean, who wouldn't want a boot room like this?
12:13It's practical, it's functional, and there's lots of lovely natural light.
12:17It's a great location because this is the back door.
12:20So, you can come in here, take your muddy clothes off, and off you go through the rest of the
12:25house.
12:25The joy of the continuous floor finish.
12:28These homeowners have shown you need not be afraid of continuing a timber floor into a wet area.
12:33Then in the kitchen and now into the boot room.
12:35It's actually a really brilliant vinyl tile.
12:38Is it?
12:38Yeah.
12:39And you just would not know that it's not timber.
12:42They are just terrific.
12:50Now, wow.
12:55A huge main bedroom.
12:59So, the little bit of colour has now been introduced, and I have that fantastic bed.
13:05Love the wall sconces on the wall.
13:07And look at the size of the headboards.
13:10Isn't that great?
13:11This is what I was expecting in the living room and dining room.
13:14A little bit more adventure in the colour, but, like, very subtle.
13:20Well, it's certainly a great big main bedroom, and the bed suits the scale of the room, and it's in
13:25the right location.
13:26I've had a problem with the style of the lighting throughout this home because of the overall sense of restraint
13:32we experienced outside and in, whereas I find the style of the lighting takes away from that.
13:38The homeowners have got a lot right, it's layered, it's more comfortable, but then there's certain things that are missing.
13:44The functionality of the room is lacking.
13:47Like, bedside cabinets are incredibly important.
13:50It doesn't seem like they're that important, but they really are, because otherwise there's hopping into bed.
13:59This home has designed features that you look for and that belong in a new-built home, such as contemporary
14:06detailed joinery and a continuous floor finish.
14:09I'm giving this home an eight.
14:12I was very impressed with the simplicity of the exterior.
14:16For me, a few more colours would have elevated this great family home even further.
14:22I'm giving this home a seven.
14:26This new build is spacious, minimal, and has a lovely connection to the surrounding landscape.
14:34Oh, goodness, goodness.
14:37Look at that wallpaper.
14:41In County Down, Tara has lovingly restored this former gate lodge with a blend of contemporary furnishings and unique patterns,
14:49while respecting the heritage of the building.
14:53I love sort of old, historic buildings, and my sort of style, very colourful and bright.
14:59And I love that sort of cottage style when people sort of renovate something and make it fun again and
15:03give it another life.
15:04I think this home, it sort of plays into that inner child feeling.
15:08It's a lot of features.
15:09For example, in my bedroom, I've got like draped princess-style bedding, and that's what I had as a child.
15:14And that's like a lovely memory that sticks out to me, and it's nice to do that as an adult,
15:20make those sort of dreams a reality.
15:22This is my favourite spot.
15:24I think it's just so relaxing, because as the crittal windows are so large, you just look out to the
15:29garden,
15:29and it's just such a, like, soothing, calm sort of atmosphere.
15:33A little bit nervous with the judges coming in, because it's very bold and very out there.
15:37But I'm hoping they'll like it.
15:42This is a picture-perfect postcard.
15:46To me, it looks like gingerbread, and you just want to go up and start eating it.
15:51It's magical.
15:52So charming, and we're only on the outside, so I cannot wait to get inside and see what's going on.
15:57Well, let's go see.
16:03Oh, my goodness.
16:05Yes, it is a storybook.
16:08This is gorgeous.
16:11There's so much going on, but it's completely cohesive.
16:15It's creating this wonderful story.
16:18I am absolutely enamoured.
16:21They've thought about the design of the kitchen in terms of it being sort of a reflection of the past,
16:28particularly the unit on the wall, which is a bit like a dresser.
16:32You can see the plates here.
16:33When I walk in here, what I see is overly traditional, which is very heavy-handed.
16:40The stripes are too much, the detail on the edge, the gallery walls.
16:45It's too much.
16:46There's just too much.
16:48I'm lost for words, Amanda.
16:50I have no idea what you're talking about.
16:52It is full of personality.
16:54The palette is divine without being too heavy.
16:57And how very dare you with these stripes.
17:00These are utterly delicious.
17:01And they, I just, I can't believe that you have an issue with these stripes.
17:05They are stunning.
17:06This kitchen is the three Fs. Functional, fun, and fantastic.
17:12Absolutely, Hugh.
17:18Wow, the main bedroom.
17:21Look at this.
17:21Oh.
17:22And there's a bath.
17:23Look at the bath in the bedroom.
17:25How wild.
17:26Look at that arched door.
17:28With the colours in here, great.
17:30There's a consistency.
17:31But really refined.
17:33Isn't it wonderful to have a freestanding bath in your bedroom?
17:37The materials, the patterns, the colours that they are bringing together are not your usual pairings.
17:44And I don't know, they're elevating.
17:46They're making this room utterly divine.
17:48This is the reason I do Home of the Year for homes like this.
17:51It is so exhilarating.
17:53I am so excited.
17:54I love it.
17:55Love it.
17:56Why is this room so successful, whereas I didn't feel the kitchen was as much?
18:00But I think it's because of the position of the bed, which has been centred on that window.
18:05And you get a beautiful view of the garden.
18:08It's a beautiful room.
18:10Yeah, it's like a lesson in how you can use different fabrics and materials, which shouldn't work, but do.
18:19Isn't this just magic?
18:21It's like walking in to a candy bar.
18:24I just think the connection of colours between the bathroom and the main bedroom is terrific.
18:32I'm just utterly enchanted.
18:34But they're using combinations, again, that are unusual.
18:38They shouldn't work, but they absolutely do.
18:41In a room of this scale, there's just too many things going on.
18:46Every time the homeowner just goes too far.
18:48I mean, look at the tassels on the Roman blind in the window.
18:51I get it.
18:52I see what you're interested in, but just pull it back a little bit.
18:55If you pulled it back, it would be boring and it would be the same as every other en suite.
19:02You don't need colours and patterns and bits to make something interesting.
19:05You actually do.
19:05You don't.
19:06Can you understand something that's not overly patterned, overly dense?
19:09Absolutely, and there's beauty in that as well.
19:12But what I'm saying is, this room is utterly beautiful.
19:16It's these details that add a playfulness, that add personality to this home.
19:21I disagree with you.
19:21For me, it's way too much.
19:23I disagree with you.
19:28Oh, this is absolutely exquisite.
19:34Yeah, the candy theme continues.
19:36I just love it.
19:38Beautiful detailing.
19:39And the most gorgeous combination of patterns that I've seen so far.
19:44It's like stepping into Alice in Wonderland or a sweet shop.
19:48But similar to the shower room off the bedroom.
19:52It's too much for a space of this scale.
19:55I don't agree, Amanda.
19:56Funnily enough, I think this homeowner, it's about a fantasy or a dream world.
20:01This home has all of those elements.
20:09Oh, goodness, goodness.
20:12Look at that wallpaper.
20:14Oh, the favourite spot.
20:18Oh, my God.
20:19Look at those cradle doors in that green.
20:22Oh, my God.
20:23This house is my dream.
20:24Could you imagine this room in winter with the fire on?
20:28And the combination of materials is gorgeous.
20:32I'm in interiors heaven.
20:34You know, for me, this is one of the bravest homes that's really pushed the creativity and design expression out
20:44that I've ever seen in Home of the Year.
20:46You know, this homeowner, they have a great eye for detail.
20:50Like, that's an amazing wallpaper.
20:52That wallpaper should be my next shirt.
20:54This is lovely.
20:56When we came into the living room, I'm lost for words.
21:01You know, as I walked through the home, I understand the homeowner and their interests and their passions and their
21:07creativity, and I respect that.
21:09But sometimes you can go too far.
21:12But all of this, it's like the grand finale.
21:14If this is the finale, I want an encore.
21:22As a judge on Home of the Year, this is exactly what I've been looking for.
21:26It's bold, it's brave, it's sophisticated, it's utterly original.
21:31I am obsessed with this home.
21:33It's a 10 for me.
21:36The homeowner's bold, maximus style is immediately apparent and intensifies as you move through the home.
21:42There's no doubt, though, that this is a highly imaginable personal space, filled with the homeowner's creativity.
21:49But it's all too much for me.
21:51I'm giving this home a 7.
21:56The outside of this home was magical, but walking inside, the magic continued and just got better and better.
22:05Now that the judges have visited all three homes, it's time to see how they measure up against each other.
22:10First, Amanda reveals her score for the home in Wicklow.
22:14Outside, there's no doubting this home is making a strong statement.
22:19Do you remember standing in that kitchen?
22:21Instead of a splash back, there was a window and you could see right out to the seat.
22:24The style and finishes of the living area, to me, felt like a different home.
22:28I gave this home an 8.
22:29Two 8s and a 9.
22:3125.
22:33Next, Siobhan gives her score for the new-built home in Clare.
22:37So this is a new-build, modern home.
22:39Incredibly spacious.
22:41Very minimal.
22:42Too minimal, I would argue.
22:44There was a lack of tactility, texture, and there was a serious lack of colour.
22:49I gave this home a 7.
22:51Oh, well, I expected that because, golly gosh, there was no colour.
22:55A 7, a 7, and an 8, 22.
22:59Finally, Hugh gives his score for the Gate Lodge in County Down.
23:03This Hansel and Gretel home I just loved.
23:07Walking through the green door was just wonderful into that kitchen.
23:11And then there was just more.
23:14I was smitten by it and I gave it a 10.
23:18Oh, thank God.
23:19Smitten.
23:20Thank you, Hugh.
23:21Two 10s and a 7.
23:2427.
23:25A very worthy winner of this beautiful home in County Down.
23:30With Amanda already having used her golden key, Hugh and Siobhan must now decide if they
23:35use theirs to put through one of the runners-up.
23:39Well, I'd like to, but I'm going to wait.
23:43I'm not going to use mine either.
23:45No golden key used, but a brilliant finalist has gone through.
