00:05This time on Highway Through Hell, a pricey load, puts reliable, in a pinch, Merv tries
00:21to land, a riverside catch, and Otto is under pressure, on a chip truck recovery, on British
00:42Columbia's Coquihalla Mountain Pass. Freight on its way to the coast, must survive the shifting
00:53conditions. You can never underestimate Mother Nature on the Coquihalla. One day it could be
00:59sunny, the next day it could be a snowstorm. 50 kilometers north of Merritt. This route's
01:06about to get busy. 10-4-1 on the ditch sideways. Heading to the crash in a reliable 50-ton
01:21wrecker. We're on our way. Operator John Dobbs. Where are you now? It's all perfect. Andy's
01:35just behind me. Between me and Andy, we've got the truck power out here. I have no doubt
01:40that we'll be able to get this job done. It's go time. Lead operator Andy Cullum follows in
01:49the 50-ton tri-drive, heavy metal. Always get a rush when you pull up. He went in with quite
01:59a bit of speed, and he's pretty far down off the road.
02:08The semi is outfitted with a refrigerated sea can trailer full of meat. Good old sea cans.
02:16Downside to sea cans is they're more solid steel, solid walls. How much weight? I was told it's
02:2355,000. They usually pack a little bit more weight into them, so there's a lot that can
02:29go wrong when you're pulling them over. Heading south to the port of Vancouver, the driver lost
02:40control, swerving into the ditch, and landing his cargo 30 feet down the embankment.
02:52Three axles, heavy. After the impact... Broken tie rod, not going to steer very well.
03:00The truck and trailer are in rough shape. This is going to be fun. And the premium load
03:07has a price tag... Of a quarter million dollars. It's extremely expensive meat, and we cannot
03:18let this spoil. Oh, ouch.
03:50High on the Coquihalla. How much weight? I was told it's 55,000. John and Andy face a heavy weight
03:58recovery. We'll get one of us on each side of it and get it over it. But the initial call...
04:04Is that what Jazz's plan was?
04:06Went to Coquihalla Towing's Jazz Saran. What's up, buddy? What's the plan there, Big Shoots? How's it going?
04:15John and Andy are pretty experienced operators, but at the end of the day, it's my reputation. My name on
04:21the door.
04:24It's on top now. Launching his company just two years ago... We're done. You did it.
04:31Jazz purchased Mighty Moe from Jamie Davis... Let's get her going.
04:36...and has been learning the ropes of the tow biz...
04:40Get it to your truck and then hold it. I'll get the front end over.
04:43...with help from outfits like Reliable.
04:48Back in business, baby.
04:52Jazz is younger, but he's secured this wreck. We're just here in support. If he's got questions, I'm gonna be
04:59there to answer for him.
05:00Stand it up. Pull it back.
05:01Okay.
05:03Between the weight of the load and the distance away from the roadway...
05:08It's pretty steep, Moe. You got 250 tons for a reason.
05:10I don't think Jazz has handled something like this before.
05:15Double.
05:16Singled.
05:17Also here is an extra pair of hands...
05:20Singled right through.
05:22...reliable's Dale and Golish.
05:25With containers, rigging points are an issue. We only have corner pockets.
05:31Yeah.
05:31The weight is an issue. It's very heavy.
05:35It's gonna be a challenge. Definitely glad we have 250 tons.
05:38We're gonna use a low line to help keep the truck level as we pull on it.
05:46Unless you got a better idea?
05:49No.
05:51Jazz is a good guy. He's learning.
05:55They're all learning good.
05:57Low lines to the axles and high lines to the corner.
06:01They'll just stand right up like nothing.
06:04John and Andy start the rollover.
06:15Hey, John.
06:18But moments in...
06:21You might want to have more pressure on the top line.
06:23I can't get any.
06:25John's wrecker is struggling.
06:27He's off the ground, Andy.
06:29We have to keep our booms pretty low because we're pulling as far as we are and they're leaning the
06:34tracks pretty good.
06:35I'm pulling my trap over.
06:39Heavy load here.
06:42Heavy load here.
06:44Heavy load here.
07:07Aggressive towing's 50-ton rotator follows the Fraser River.
07:12An old boat sank.
07:14With lead operator, Chris Mervin.
07:17They called and said they needed a hand getting back to shore.
07:20Mad props marine go around and recover sunk boats.
07:23Every now and then he runs into one where he just needs a little extra pulling power.
07:27So they need you on standby down here.
07:29And backing up Merv tonight, Rob Lewis.
07:32This boat has been in the spot for about a month.
07:36So now we're going to get in there and get this thing hauled up.
07:41On the northern tip of Anasis Island.
07:48I think something is starting to show right there.
07:52The dropping tide starts to reveal tonight's salvage.
08:00There's the boat. There's the boat.
08:03I think it says low tides right around midnight.
08:06This boat, they had it tied to a piling.
08:09It eventually got a leak.
08:10The water took over and that was it for that boat.
08:14They're here.
08:16The Mad Props marine crew arrives, led by owner Jeremy Birch.
08:24We can start to see the roof.
08:27We got a problem on the south coast with, you know, direlect and abandoned vessels.
08:32This is one of them.
08:33We've removed dozens and dozens of direlect vessels and materials from the river netting and sunk docks and vehicles.
08:43And the list goes on.
08:45Let's go.
08:47Let's move it.
08:48Working BC's rugged coast and the Fraser River, Mad Props specializes in difficult cleanup operations.
08:58The boat is stranded.
09:01Tonight, they're governed by the tides.
09:05Float it before it gets grounded out so that we don't have to stay here all night.
09:09Game A is to try to refloat the boat.
09:11We hold it upright while the tide's receding and then find out why it's sunk, plug the holes.
09:18They'll need to finish before the tide dips too low to remove the boat.
09:23Get the containment all ripped apart, get them out of the way.
09:28And then we'll do the salvage.
09:32Stay on the left lane.
09:35North of Merritt on Highway 5.
09:38I'm pulling my truck over.
09:41The reliable team up is struggling.
09:45Come on John, boom up, lift that thing.
09:47With a meaty sea can.
09:49Boom up!
09:51This boat is probably worth around $250,000 to $300,000.
09:55So the customer has requested us not to unload it.
09:59Just pick it up and put it on the road.
10:02Hey bud, go ask for the real manifest.
10:05This is definitely heavier than you're being told it is.
10:08We got two 50 ton winches on it.
10:11150,000 pounds of pulling power and it's not even budget.
10:16She is heavy.
10:17Hold on.
10:19Let it down.
10:23Working on the live highway, we have limited space.
10:27Angles are a little different than what you need.
10:29Why are you so high off the ground?
10:31That's what I'm asking you.
10:32You're not getting any lift.
10:34No.
10:36Straps would do all the work if we can get one over the top, you know what I mean?
10:40Dalen...
10:40I bet you it will just roll right up.
10:42...suggests a different approach.
10:45Yeah.
10:46It's my opinion anyway.
10:48Cross-strap to the top of it.
10:52Wrapping straps across the far side of the container
10:56will give each wrecker a straighter angle on the pole,
11:01maximizing their winch power and cradling the semi upright.
11:09Are we ready?
11:12With the straps in place...
11:16Yeah, look at that. It's already coming.
11:19Round two begins.
11:31Is he going through the roof?
11:34He's going through the roof.
11:38If we rip open the wall, then just a load of meat is no garbage.
11:44Is that just snow or is he going through the roof?
11:47I can't tell.
11:51Hang on, hang on.
11:55What's going on with the highway 5?
11:58North of Merritt.
12:00Looks like somebody had a boo-boo in the district.
12:04Is that just snow or is he going through the roof?
12:07Andy and John's sealed sea can is buckling under pole pressure.
12:12He's going to break.
12:14Keep going, hang on.
12:17I'm scared to go look.
12:20It would be a pretty bad thing if we ripped open a wall
12:22because they're not allowed to expose that load.
12:31It's not true, it's kinking though.
12:34That definitely speaks to the weight of this.
12:36Pulling crossways on a steel box.
12:38To be able to kink it like that, you're pulling on some serious weight.
12:44They'll need more might to finish the job.
12:48I think if we add Moe to it.
12:50Okay.
12:51Because you can get Moe square here.
12:54Square?
12:54Yeah.
12:55Okay.
12:56John and Andy's trucks, they're strong trucks, but this is 50 or 60 feet away from the curb
13:01and that would mean that we would need more pulling power.
13:07So we're going to put Mighty Moe in there and do it right.
13:11Let's get the lines on, let's go.
13:18With Mighty Moe's lines on the top corners, they'll spread the force of all three wreckers across six points
13:27to lift the sea can without breaking it.
13:35That's good.
13:39You ready?
13:41Yeah.
13:42Okay, it's because it's done.
13:45It's definitely old school, but Mighty Moe is a pretty powerful truck.
13:50Good to have it here.
13:59Whoa!
14:03It's not the fastest truck, but it pulls hard.
14:12Got to get that back end up.
14:18Can't keep up to.
14:23John, get tight!
14:43You see that? You just need some old iron here.
14:46Saved the day, Jazz.
14:47Looks like it.
14:54Oh!
14:56But with the trailer upright...
14:59Look at the axles.
15:01Andy spots trouble.
15:03I don't think this thing can go down the road.
15:06No. Those are broken.
15:08The trailer's in pretty rough shape.
15:09I don't know if it's going to hold together.
15:11If we have to try to pull it up the bank.
15:14Where's the adjuster guy?
15:16Andy brings in Wayne Dubow.
15:20Yep.
15:21Look at the axles.
15:23To assess the valuable load.
15:26Wayne is the insurance adjuster for this.
15:30He is in charge of how we do things.
15:35We can't get it out because the trailer is compromised.
15:38The wheels will not turn to get it back up onto the road.
15:42What if we just transfer it?
15:44If we open the doors, we're $250,000 gone.
15:48It's better to pay for the rotator for anything.
15:51Or a crane.
15:54A 200-ton crane, you're only going to need one.
15:57Okay. I can find someone right now.
16:00Jazz makes the call to delay the recovery and save the load.
16:06I'm going to call my buddy up down the coast.
16:08He has a bunch of cranes.
16:10Our plan is to lift the container out with the 250-ton crane
16:15that's going to be here in the morning.
16:17Once it's on the land, we'll come back and pull the chassis out.
16:20Sounds like a plan.
16:22Jazz made the decision to let the crane finish it tomorrow,
16:25and that's a lot easier on us, so he did pretty good.
16:30We'll see how it goes.
16:3310-4, we'll see you in the morning.
16:39Three hours southwest on the Fraser River.
16:43All right, I'll move my truck, buddy.
16:44Okay.
16:46Aggressive is in a race against the falling tide.
16:51We're going to connect to this boat.
16:52We're going to try to hold it upright so that it's sitting level under the water.
16:56We've got it rigged.
16:58Once we get them hooked up, if everything goes as planned,
17:01we'll pull it and ride it.
17:08Okay.
17:09Rotten and old derelict boat.
17:11They don't like being pulled on real hard, that's for sure.
17:15Hopefully what we can hook up to on it is willing to hold up to the forces we're going to
17:19apply.
17:24With a strap already rigged to a cleat on the stern, and a new strap shackled to the bow,
17:32Merv will upright the boat for Jeremy to pump out the water and float it off-site.
17:45Okay.
17:46Okay.
17:47Murph?
17:49I'll feed you some cable here, Jeremy.
17:51Uh, so let's just put some tension on and see what it does.
17:54Okay.
17:56Okay.
18:00Got her?
18:01Yep.
18:06It's moving.
18:07Keep going?
18:08Yep.
18:09Yep.
18:10You know, I'm a land tow truck and he's a marine tow truck, so it works.
18:13Yep, we're coming.
18:17Let's go it.
18:21We got the bow of the boat almost out of the water here, and the stern's coming up now, so...
18:28The tide's working with us, everything's working out.
18:31Boats are kind of finicky.
18:33It's very hard to know exactly what you're playing with, or if you're gonna break a piece off the boat.
18:49Why is it really hard here?
18:51On the Fraser River's Anasis Island.
18:57Oh, too much.
19:01Murph loses his grip on a riverbank recovery.
19:05The whole cleat let go.
19:07Something's gonna let go.
19:08Something always lets go and solve it.
19:11We were only hooked up to a cleat, and it's into a rotten boat, so...
19:16The cleats are attached through fiberglass, generally into a little piece of wood.
19:20Much different than us grabbing a diff or a frame rail trying to pull a semi-oak.
19:25With the cleats ruled out...
19:27We gotta re-rig the skirt.
19:30Jeremy looks for something stronger.
19:40Okay, come up alongside here. Don't lose that strap.
19:43That's a pretty beat-up boat, pretty rotten.
19:45They're never nice to work on, particularly when they're half sunk.
19:50Okay, now send me, send me it.
19:53Beauty.
19:53We're just trying to add an extra point wrapping around the cabin there and see if we can share enough
19:59of the load and the force to try to finish getting this boat upright.
20:03Okay.
20:04With Bertha, rigged to the cabin...
20:08Okay, just take the weight, Merv.
20:10Merv can pull harder and make up for lost time.
20:23Okay.
20:35And right on schedule.
20:37It's sitting perfect.
20:39The boat uprights.
20:42We've got a huge dropping tide tonight, so...
20:44Right now, Mother Nature's assisting us.
20:47We'll get pumping, get it floating.
20:51Oh, it's moving out quicker than it's going in for sure.
20:55It's floating.
20:58We'll have a look, have a listen where the water's coming in.
21:01We'll patch it, float it, and tow it out of here.
21:04That's a nice boat, Rob.
21:06Yep.
21:09This boat wasn't in very good shape when it sank and it was in worse shape when it came up.
21:15With the water pumped out of the interior...
21:19There she is right there.
21:22Jeremy locates the source of the leak.
21:24That is why the boat sunk.
21:26That hose blew out.
21:28So we're going to patch it with trusty spray foam and then we'll cover that foam with plywood and screw
21:33it in.
21:34We're out of here.
21:36Thank you, man.
21:38Team Aggressive did awesome.
21:40The Merv always pulls through.
21:42He's going to tie it up to his other boat and take it up river and get it hauled out.
21:46Marine salvage is fun.
21:47It's like keeping a highway open.
21:49You want to keep the rivers open and free flowing.
21:51Alright, Robby, river's open.
21:53Let's get out of here, buddy.
21:57Friends, we're on our way home.
21:59Yeet yeet!
22:15Oh, still in there, eh?
22:18On the north side of the Coquihalla Pass...
22:22It's always better in the daylight.
22:31It's always better in the daylight.
22:36It's all for the quarter million dollar lift under Wayne's watchful eye.
22:42Should be an easy lift now.
22:44Hopefully.
22:49Last night, the driver went off the highway, sending his lucrative load of meat into the ditch.
23:00Now, Jazz is on a deadline.
23:03We're ready to go.
23:04To keep the cargo en route to its overseas destination.
23:09This load has got to be inspected and shipped out, so we are on a tight timeline.
23:16We're all rigged up, looks like.
23:17Yeah.
23:18Home ground food, eh?
23:25The pressure's on.
23:27The crane crew has rigged straps to all four corners.
23:31Up, up, and away!
23:35Yeah, she's starting to come now.
23:38But with the sea can over 30 feet away...
23:43It's kind of leaning over.
23:45Oh, yeah.
23:46Oh!
23:49At a weight of 70,000 pounds.
23:53He's got a boom in with it?
23:55Yeah.
23:57It's just within the load limits of the crane's 200 foot boom.
24:05It's swinging out.
24:06You can't have that swing.
24:09It gets the heart pumping.
24:22You can't have that swing, right?
24:28There he goes.
24:29He's getting her up now.
24:30To get the 70,000 pound sea can...
24:33Stay clear.
24:34...back on its way to port.
24:37It's nice being back in the daylight, but there's much more traffic as well.
24:43I'll watch out for that.
24:44Briefly holding traffic...
24:46Good!
24:49The quarter million dollar container...
24:53...is swung safely on deck.
24:56Yee-haw!
24:58Finally, man.
24:59Let's get that delivered.
25:01The load's safe, the seal's still intact, and it's gonna make it on time to the shipyard.
25:09Let's get her rigged up.
25:11But Jazz still needs to recover the tractor and trailer.
25:15We have this big crane here.
25:17We're just like, why not just lift it up?
25:19Put it onto the road, right?
25:22Crane's way better than a wrecker here, just because we don't have to move any barriers.
25:26And we can just pick it up, put it on the side.
25:30With traffic still flowing...
25:33...the crane swings the trailer...
25:38...up onto the road.
25:41There you go.
25:42But the empty trailer chassis...
25:45Yeah, that's good right there.
25:47...is the easy part.
25:49Give it a whirl and see if we can lift that truck up here.
25:52It'll save a lot of time and effort.
25:55The mangled truck is much riskier.
25:58It would be better if we could get something in, like a frame rail or something.
26:02Your call on this one, would you want to try lifting it out, or you want to just pull your
26:06cables and suck it out?
26:08If we rip the tractor open right now, while pulling it up, all the liability would be on us.
26:15Yeah, I can rig it up for you guys.
26:17It'll be fine.
26:20Placing his trust in the crane crew.
26:23Ready to run the leaf spring?
26:25Yeah.
26:26Everything rides on Jazz's rigging.
26:29So we've got to be really careful what we do and what our next steps are.
26:33You want it?
26:34I'll dump right here.
26:39Jazz sets up a web of chains hooked to the axles and front toe pin.
26:44Okay.
26:48But even if his chains hold.
26:52Coming up.
26:54There you go.
26:55The busted up tractor may not.
27:00Structural integrity is not really there.
27:04Moment of truth.
27:06I'm just visualizing the tractor ready to break loose at any moment here.
27:11To Jazz's relief.
27:17Very good.
27:19The tractor touches down in one piece.
27:24I wouldn't have done it any other way.
27:27Working together.
27:29It's a win for everyone.
27:32Hey, buddy.
27:32Missed all the fun.
27:35These guys know what they're doing.
27:37Yeah.
27:38I would have done the same thing.
27:40Good plan.
27:42Me making the call to get the crane out here was great.
27:45And it built up our confidence as well.
27:48We're just ready for the next wreck so we can tackle it down.
27:51Makes our life easier.
27:53Hook it up and tow it back when these guys are done.
27:55Jazz did really good.
27:56He was able to get it over and he did pretty good at leading the charge.
28:01He's figuring it out pretty good.
28:04That's pretty much it.
28:05It's a wrap.
28:06Okay, buddy.
28:07We'll see you at the yard.
28:09Alright.
28:10One of my goals is to bring the industry together.
28:13That's the theme that I preach with my team.
28:15But the only way it works is that they work together.
28:21And wide open.
28:39There's a little bit of flush there.
28:41500 kilometers north.
28:44Treacherous conditions on Quennell's Highway 97.
28:48Be extremely careful.
28:50Have drivers on edge.
28:55It's pretty wet and dirty.
28:57A 50-ton auto wrecker takes a priority call.
29:01It's a pellet plant just outside of town.
29:05With owner Rob Barber.
29:07I'm heading out to a tip truck that's fallen over in the ditch and lost its load.
29:13Following in a 25-ton heavy.
29:15Let's see what we can do.
29:17Rob's nephew and second in command, Kyle Langlois.
29:22Being a connector highway up to Alaska, this highway can get busy.
29:27Highway 97 is the most important route.
29:31It's the essential route to get anywhere up north.
29:34And you've got to keep that traffic flowing.
29:37That's not good.
29:40Trailer slid over and toppled the truck onto its side.
29:47Well, let's go see what they get to do.
29:53There's a mirror.
29:54The semi was carrying wood chips into the pellet plant when it misjudged the turn.
30:01I mean, it's super light, eh? It's sawdust.
30:05These walking floor chip trailers are super expensive and there's probably a waiting list to get one.
30:09So we'll try to make sure we don't hurt it so it can go back into use.
30:15You want me up front or...?
30:17Yeah, I'll go on the trailer because I can put my boom up high.
30:19Okay.
30:21Let's do a quick closure.
30:23With just one lane in each direction,
30:28they'll have to close down the critical highway.
30:33We don't want to close it, so we try to keep it as short as we can.
30:38Pre-rigging high lines from the 50-ton to the top of the trailer.
30:47The 25-ton will hook to the tractor.
30:51Just trying to get set up before we go on the road
30:55so there's less time suckering up traffic.
31:00See what happens?
31:05We're going to close it for a couple of minutes, if that's okay.
31:08Okie dokie.
31:09Keeping the closure to a minimum.
31:14Kyle and Rob
31:17waste no time getting started.
31:20Other people have places to go.
31:22A lot of the times it's essential for them.
31:24If it's essential for them, it makes it essential for us.
31:29That's it.
31:30But rushing the flip
31:33could damage the specialized trailer.
31:36Pull more in the front.
31:46Good chip trailers are not meant to be pulled on on the side.
31:52Not having a roof.
31:53They're kind of flimsy.
31:55Ha!
31:57You can pull through a wall pretty easily if you don't pull on it just quite right.
32:06Oh! Oh!
32:10Oh!
32:11Oh!
32:13Oh!
32:26Oh!
32:28Oh!
32:32Oh!
32:32The chip trailer is upright.
32:34It'll wear a weight in the corner than we hoped.
32:37But wrenching it onto the road is risky.
32:42These walking floor chip trailers, it's all aluminum so you can't pull on them with any weight.
32:47Get off the road for a bit?
32:49Yeah.
32:50With traffic building, they pause to recalibrate the plan.
32:55When we have to shut the highway down, that's a lot on an operator's mind.
32:59We don't want to be there too long.
33:01If you got full, let it single again if you want.
33:08Yay!
33:10Yeah, let things go for a few minutes and then we'll put the trailer up on the road and separate
33:16it.
33:17The damaged tractor is likely a write-off.
33:21Once that north goes by, I'll do another quick closure.
33:25But Rob wants to keep the trailer as close to working condition as possible.
33:33Okay.
33:37Re-hooking to the rear.
33:39Let's hope it moves.
33:41Rob avoids tugging on the fragile wall.
33:46It's coming.
33:48You just want the trailer to come straight up the banks so you're not pulling unnecessarily hard on something.
33:57That's good.
34:01With the trailer back on level ground.
34:06It's good for a single lane now.
34:10Traffic is moving again on the critical route.
34:15So now that we got it up on the road, we're separating the tractor from the trailer.
34:20Keep going, keep going.
34:22You've succeeded.
34:24The public can keep rolling and they can keep going to where they need to go.
34:27And the specialized chip trailer can soon get back to work.
34:33It's been a good day.
34:34We didn't do any damage.
34:36And we were able to kind of clean things up as quick as we could and keep things moving along.
34:41It's open now, so we're rolling.
34:47It's a little better than Hope.
34:51500 kilometers south in Hope, BC.
34:54It doesn't last very long.
35:00A Jamie Davis, 30-ton heavy, rolls out on Highway 1.
35:06I take pride in my ride.
35:09With operator, Quen Wiley.
35:12I've been towing for about 13 years now.
35:16This year, Jamie put me in a 2020 Peterbilt HR 130.
35:21So this is your first track using a big truck?
35:24Yeah, it is.
35:26Jamie's newest recruit, Maxim Chamberlain Norman, will be assisting on his first heavy recovery.
35:33I'm going to show you, teach you how to hook up, how to recover, how to do all these things,
35:39the same way I was taught.
35:41Perfect.
35:43Quen, he's kind of the go-to guy in Hope for anything heavy.
35:47For Max on his first job here, he couldn't ask for a better place to land, to actually get some
35:53training.
35:5580 kilometers up the Fraser Canyon, they pull over just past Boston Bar.
36:02Oh, that's a long ways down.
36:06This wreck is steeper than what I was told, and from the looks of it, there's a lot of parts
36:13not attached anymore.
36:15Wow-wee.
36:16Looks like you rode the rail for a bit, eh?
36:19I think so.
36:21On scene to help fish out the battered SUV is long-haul driver, Mark Richards.
36:27There's no such thing as a little job. A small job, a big job, can cause you pain if you
36:34don't pay attention.
36:36And you're gonna pull it out from the back?
36:39No, we're gonna, I think our best bet's gonna be grab it by the front and pull it up.
36:42We got that rock to worry about.
36:44Between them and the wreck, there's a minefield of boulders.
36:49There's some rocks and there's no wheels, so you have to know before to pull where it's gonna go.
36:57Have you pulled the drive shaft?
36:58Yeah, yeah.
37:00It is my first big wreck.
37:02It's been maybe at least 10 years that I'm waiting for what I'm doing right now, so like, I like
37:08that and, you know, I'll get better and better.
37:10Sometimes you can tie it up.
37:12We just try it.
37:13But, in this case...
37:17Years ago, I was Max. I was going down the hill, up and down.
37:23Learning different ways to hook onto things.
37:29Max! Make the chain tighter!
37:35There you go!
37:37Perfect.
37:38He's done one or two smaller recoveries that aren't this major.
37:43So it's a good learning experience for him.
37:47Mark!
37:48Max!
37:50Make sure you guys are out of the way.
37:52Scrambling to a safe spot.
37:55I don't want to be here so I can see the truck.
38:08Max's lesson gets off.
38:12To a rocky start.
38:15Nope.
38:16That was definitely not the moment I wanted.
38:19Yeah, I got an accident here just on the other side of this corner, guys.
38:23North of Hope, on Highway 1 in the Fraser Canyon.
38:28That rock is gonna be a giant pain.
38:31When walks Maxim through his first heavy recovery.
38:35A wrecked SUV down 60 feet of rough terrain.
38:42There's rock and it's everywhere and you can't blow the oil pan or you can't blow the fuel thing.
38:53Nope.
38:54That was definitely not the moment I wanted.
38:58But, confident in his rigging.
39:01Hope for the best, expect the worst.
39:04Quinn keeps pulling.
39:09Holy...
39:10That should get us over the rock.
39:14Come on, girl.
39:16Keep going.
39:18She is.
39:20The SUV clears the rocks.
39:23Keep going.
39:24But other obstacles will be less forgiving.
39:27Actually, Mark!
39:29Grab your truck and run the winch line because it's getting too close to those trees.
39:33It's not wanting to go where I want it to go, so I need to come up with a better
39:38plan.
39:39So now we're just gonna run a winch line out.
39:41Fuck it on.
39:44Okay, you got the cable?
39:46Yep!
39:47Adding a line to the front.
39:49Quinn can steer the wreck.
39:52Should help reduce that risk of it going into the tree stump.
39:59He's going!
40:08That'll do it.
40:11And at the top of the hill, a concrete no-post remains a barrier.
40:17To get this SUV over the no-post, it's gonna take a bit of finessing.
40:28Quinn must carefully coordinate the two wreckers to clear the two-foot wall.
40:34Now that we're right up close, now we're gonna start pulling away from each other.
40:38So what I'm gonna do is I'm getting him to move up, and then I'm gonna slowly pull as he's
40:43turning.
40:44On that here.
40:46Yeah, that way it should come right over gently, because we don't want to be rough with the vehicle.
40:51Perfect.
40:52I'm not a teacher in a training school by no means, but for Max to be on his first time
40:58swamping and going down the bank and coming back up again.
41:02A little looser.
41:04A little more.
41:05There you go.
41:06There's lots of opportunity for him to learn here.
41:09Quinn uses a re-rigged line to swing the rear over.
41:16There, okay.
41:18But as the back wheels come over the edge...
41:21It's a bit risky, but as long as you're paying attention, you should be fine.
41:26The wreck...
41:28...nearly collides...
41:30...with the boss's property.
41:32Heart attack moment.
41:35That was close from the truck.
41:37We're a couple inches away.
41:39That's a phone call I really don't want to make to Jamie.
41:43Okay, pull.
41:48At last...
41:50...the SUV is out.
41:53Get the car ready for transport and then we're out of here.
41:58Everything went really well.
42:00We got the truck out of the ditch.
42:01I didn't hit my truck.
42:03It's a successful end to Maxim's first big wreck.
42:10Max did really well.
42:11He'll be one of the guys I call when I get a wreck and need a second guy.
42:16Working with a big wrecker today, it's a dream and it came true.
42:21So now it's not a dream no more.
42:23You're good to go.
42:27Old guys rule, but we still need some young talent.
42:29Okay, let's get out of here.
42:31Let's get out of here.
42:32That's kind of a new evolving thing at our place.
42:35You know, re-energize ourselves.
42:39And...
42:40...hate to say it, but you know, we need that.
42:50Next time on Highway Through Hell...
42:53...a split semi...
42:55Hold on, hold on, hold on.
42:57...has Reliable in a trailer slam-down.
43:00Whoa! Hang on.
43:02...Team Aggressive stands back...
43:04Don't go under that pipe.
43:06...under a touchy load...
43:08...and a perilous storm...
43:11...has Al...
43:12How are you doing tonight?
43:13Sending off an old friend...
43:16...is off into the sunset.
43:46...is off to the next scene,
43:47in the first half of the day...
43:48...and has been a great rest of the day.
