00:29So when you're building your character
00:30in Wasteland 3, we provide you a ton of granular control over every aspect of your character.
00:36If you like deep, crunchy stats, you're going to love diving into the derived stats of each
00:40character in Wasteland 3.
00:42After the apocalypse, nobody came out unscathed.
00:46Everyone is a little crazy in their own way, and we represent that in character creation
00:49through the quirk system.
00:51When you're picking your character, you can pick a powerful bonus, and it's always tied
00:55to a super powerful penalty.
00:57So, for instance, you can be a pyromaniac and you do tons of bonus elemental damage,
01:01but every time you go to light a fuse on a grenade or you shoot off a rocket launcher, you
01:05risk
01:05bursting into flames, which you yourself are more than happy to do, but I think the rest
01:09of your team is going to wish you were a little more alive to see the rest of the fight
01:12out.
01:15One of the really important elements is grounding the player in your game, clearly explaining
01:19what each one of these stats are and how they're important to the player, and most importantly,
01:24how it's going to impact their play style.
01:27If the character wants to be weak, they need to know exactly what that entails.
01:30You're not going to be throwing grenades very far.
01:32You go down in combat very quickly.
01:34You're not able to lift heavy armor.
01:36And those are all things they need to know right from the get-go, because nothing is more
01:40frustrating than getting 30 hours into the game only to realize that you made a mistake
01:45in character creation, and now you regret your past choices and you want to start over.
01:48That feels terrible.
01:50So everything you can do to surface that information to the player early and often is really great
01:55during character creation.
01:56Since I have a really good understanding of how Wasteland works, I can build some really
02:00specific characters.
02:01So I'll give you a couple of cheats.
02:02You can build characters that are basically missiles built to die, and then your combat medic
02:07just picks them up and patches them up at the end of every combat.
02:10By building a character with death wish, stacking speed, and then giving them a bladed weapon,
02:15they can shoot out at the start of combat, cover tons of ground, and make a huge impact
02:20at the beginning of the game to inevitably be filled with holes on round two or three
02:24by the enemy.
02:25But by then they've kind of filled their purpose, and so they die with honor.
02:29Additionally, one of my favorite combos that we added was literally the combo meter.
02:33If you're specifically a brawler, meaning you're punching people in the Wasteland, you're
02:37bringing fists to a gunfight, that starts off really weak, and it's going to feel like
02:41a wrong choice right at the start of the game, but if you stick to it, you get to build
02:45up
02:45something called a combo meter.
02:47Every time you hit an enemy, your critical hit chance and your critical hit damage keep
02:50going up and up and up and up.
02:52If your character is also intelligent, the critical hit damage bonuses and critical hit
02:56chances you get will stack on top of each other, meaning your hyper-intelligent nerdy brawler
03:01is going to be exploding people in the endgame.
03:04When building a party in Wasteland 3, it's important to remember that you're not just building
03:09an individual character, but you're building a member of a team.
03:12Your ranger squad is a team of specialists, and each one is going to have their own job
03:16to do, so building any one character to be an all-arounder is not going to service you
03:19when you have five other party members that can fill very specific roles.
03:24It's really important that when you're building your party that you diversify the kind of ammo
03:28that they're consuming.
03:29This is really, in a lot of modern shooters, ammo's super plentiful, but in the world of Wasteland,
03:35there's not really a production line for bullets, so everyone's firing antiques.
03:39in effect.
03:40And so the bullets that were there before the bombs drop are the bullets everyone's
03:43using.
03:43And so they can be incredibly rare, and they act as a really important money sink for
03:47your party.
03:48And you can find yourself really up Schitt's Creek if you're in the middle of a boss fight,
03:52and everyone in your party is using energy ammo, and now all of a sudden everyone's out
03:56of ammo because someone fired the last shot.
03:59And now you're left unarmed and punching a giant Scorpitron.
04:02So it's critical that somebody's using small-caliber bullets, energy weapons, and most importantly,
04:08that you have a couple of people using melee weapons because those don't need to be reloaded.
04:11So for people who are new to Wasteland 3 and really just want to get into the thick of
04:15it as fast as humanly possible, and don't profoundly care about nitpicking over every
04:20single property of their characters, they can jump straight into the action with character
04:23duos.
04:24That's a new feature we've brought to Wasteland, where you can pick an initial group of characters
04:28that come as a package set.
04:30These characters come ready to rock, armed with weapons, skills, abilities, quirks, perks,
04:35trinkets, everything that you want.
04:37But in addition to that, they add an extra level of flavor to the game, which is really
04:41fun.
04:41As you're playing through the game, they're going to banter back and forth, they have
04:44little extra things they get to say as they're playing.
04:47And as a new dad, my favorite of all of them is Lee Sing and William.
04:50William is a battle-hardened, traumatized soldier, and Lee Sing's his daughter, and Lee
04:55Sing does all the talking for him.
04:57So he just kind of grunts stoically and has short one-word answer, and then Lee Sing
05:00acts as her translator.
05:02And it adds these really charming elements throughout the game, so as you're playing,
05:05these duos give their perspective on what's going on in the world and kind of help give
05:09you context.
05:10When we looked to evolve the combat system in Wasteland 2, we wanted to keep the crunchy,
05:14really satisfying elements of its turn-based strategy, and we wanted that to carry over into
05:18Wasteland 3, but we also wanted to remove a lot of the elements that just weren't fun.
05:23One of the number one elements that we looked to improve upon was how enemies resolved their
05:27turn.
05:28In Wasteland 3, the players' turns are bunched together, and so are the enemies.
05:33So when the enemy goes, you see all of them move all at once, take their shots, bop, bop,
05:37bop, activate their abilities, and then you're back in the driver's seat again.
05:40And as a player, having your turn bunched together, rather than having to use our old initiative
05:45system, allows you a ton more tactical flexibility.
05:50Now just about every combat skill provides one or more different abilities that really
05:55opens up the number of things you can do.
05:56If you're using a heavy machine gun, you can expend a ton of ammo and blaze suppressing
06:00fire over the battlefield.
06:02If you're using a pistol, you can perform a strict shot to automatically charge your strike
06:07meter.
06:08If you are using an assault rifle, you can use a piercing shot to rip armor off of enemies
06:12and puncture through covers.
06:14There's tons of options now, and every single person on the battlefield is going to feel
06:17like they have a very distinct role, and there's going to be a moment where they save the day,
06:21and that's really what abilities allow us to do.
06:24When we moved the game to Colorado, the super blizzard that you were dealing with would
06:29have killed you from exposure in minutes.
06:31So we brought you the Kodiak.
06:32This is your companion in the Wasteland.
06:34As you're driving around and random encounters pop up, that Kodiak and its souped-up energy
06:39cannon that you mounted on its hood are going to be helping you blow away, you know, rad
06:43hoppers and shock dogs as you're navigating your way from Colorado Springs to Denver.
06:50As you explore the world map, you're going to bump into things like radiation.
06:53You're going to want to go back to your garage to customize your car, soup up your radiation
06:57protection, add a little extra armor, or maybe add a, like, lecucaracha horn so that you
07:03have something to, you know, entertain yourself while you're driving around.
07:06There's tons of really cool customization options with the Kodiak that let you not only
07:10customize its appearance and style and, like, really, like, express yourself, but it also
07:15lets you take it into combat and just blow enemies away.
07:18There's massive saw cannons.
07:20There's magnetron, like, emitters.
07:23There are goat cannons that you can use to launch living fodder into the air and bombard
07:28your enemy with goats, literally.
07:31So as you play, you're going to unlock all sorts of fun and funny and wild upgrades for
07:35your car that you're going to see and you're going to enjoy as you drive around the world
07:38map.
07:39In Wasteland 3, more than any other game I've made or played, you are in the driver's seat.
07:44You're able to negotiate peace treaties between different groups.
07:48You're able to annihilate entire populations if you want.
07:51We let you do whatever you want.
07:53We let you, you can screw yourself up dramatically, like in my playthrough I kind of killed every
07:59merchant that I came across, and now it's really hard to buy ammo, but that's totally
08:03on me because I had good reasons at the time.
08:06Most of them had to do with them not giving me discounts.
08:23Are you washed in the blood of the world?
08:27Grazie per la visione!
