00:00We're about to show you how Captain America faced off against Captain America in Marvel Studios' Avengers Endgame.
00:07Hey, I'm the Stars and the Stripes. I'm Lorraine.
00:09If you throw me, I'll come right back. I'm Langston.
00:11This is Earth's Mightiest Show.
00:13Hey, later on musician Ingrid Michaelson's gonna pop in to talk about her fandom.
00:17But first, here's our own Agent M with a scoop on Cap vs. Cap.
00:21Ooh, that's really America's ask. I said ask.
00:33Hey, Marvel fans. I'm Ryan Penagos, aka Agent M.
00:36And I'm so excited to be sitting here with the VFX supervisor of Marvel Studios' Avengers Endgame, Dan DeLue.
00:42How you doing, Dan?
00:43Doing great.
00:43So, there's so much to talk about in this film. You worked three years on it.
00:50Let's just dive right into some stuff. You ready?
00:52Yep, let's go.
00:53First thing I want to dig into, Dan, is Cap vs. Cap.
00:56I don't believe you guys have the technology to clone Chris Evans yet.
01:01Not yet.
01:02But how do we bring this battle to life?
01:04How do you have two Captain Americas fighting so intensely?
01:08A lot of the ways we shoot the fights is that you'll get out there and shoot it with two
01:11stunt performers.
01:13And then kind of run the fight with them.
01:15And then you'll bring Chris Evans in and you'll shoot his side of the fight.
01:19But in this case, he shot both sides.
01:21And so the same thing, we shot it with two stunt doubles.
01:23And then Chris would come in and play his side and play the important side.
01:28And so from that, you could kind of get the different coverage with the stunties and the actors.
01:33And then you get that great acting with them as they fight.
01:36Originally, we shot it without the cowl, without the helmet of the old suit.
01:41But then when we started testing the movie, people were losing track of which Cap was which.
01:46So, because we had the cut on his face that he would have gotten in the Battle of New York.
01:50But people weren't following that.
01:52So we ended up actually having to put a CG helmet onto Avengers Cap.
01:57What we did is we worked with Lola.
01:59It's a visual effects company.
02:00And they have this thing we call the egg.
02:02You know, any of the actors come in, but Chris will come in.
02:04And you'll have three cameras kind of from the general angle in which you shot it.
02:08And then from that footage, you'll take the three cameras, take the best angle, build the best angle.
02:13And then, you know, basically take Chris Evans' head plus face and put it on the stunt double.
02:19And the trick is that, you know, a lot of times you can't just stretch the actor's face to match
02:25the stunt double's head.
02:26So you end up having to like warp the stunt person's head to match Chris Evans' head and then put
02:32his face on it.
02:33Oh my gosh.
02:34Yeah, so easy.
02:36Sure.
02:37Yeah, easy.
02:39So we're looking at this scene and all of it essentially is created in VFX, which blew me away because
02:50when I watched it, I was like, oh, that's a really cool set.
02:53It looks so, so much of it seemed practical and seemed so real to the point where there's like all
02:59this glass and all this action that's going on.
03:02How much do you have to do to bridge all those gaps and especially the glass and those little particles
03:09seem wildly intricate and difficult?
03:13We knew when we shot it was going to be glass.
03:15All the artwork that everyone was attracted to was kind of this kind of big open space glass skyscraper for
03:23portraying the insides of Stark Tower.
03:25And it's something that we just we couldn't find practically and we couldn't necessarily build.
03:29So basically everything you see we basically modeled inside of Stark Tower.
03:35You got one bridge that we built made of glass that was reflecting green screen.
03:39So pretty much that was great to have.
03:41But then that got replaced quite a lot, too, because you couldn't pull the mat off the green screen.
03:44But all the offices you see on the side are dressed, you know, like just like you would dress a
03:48set.
03:49You just, you know, you built all the office equipment you could possibly want and start dressing everything from the
03:53sides.
03:54And it was interesting because with a the set that we built digitally was was incredibly detailed.
04:01We found that we were cutting it the there was so much complexity to it that on the shortcuts of
04:08how we usually share fights, you couldn't follow the action anymore because you needed to kind of get the clean
04:12silhouette of cap, you know, fighting cap that that with all that busy background.
04:17So we ended up having to go in and just adding a little more atmosphere, kind of cheating the depth
04:21of field a little bit just to kind of pull some of the detail out that we put into it.
04:24So you're wasn't as much visual information going into your eyes. So it was it was a roundabout way to
04:29get there. But, you know, it ended up working.
04:33In Stark Tower, you know, so much of it is is VFX, but there's also a practical set of stairs
04:40that was actually built.
04:41How do you and the VFX team, you know, work with the the practical side of things to make sure
04:48that all comes together?
04:49Well, I like shooting as much practically as we can. And so we have this relationship with with the stunt
04:55team and cap falling and smacking things seems to be one of their favorite things.
04:59You kind of you let the stunties do their craft and keep them safe, paint out whatever pads they need.
05:05And then, you know, but let them be able to do their wire work.
05:08And you get that, you know, you kind of get just to that edge of something that's it feels like
05:12it's really going to hurt, but cap can survive it.
05:14And so when you look at the scene, you've got, you know, the bridge, stunties fall off the bridge, then
05:19you cut wide, you go to CG Digi Doubles of cap.
05:22And then the shots looking down when they're bashing between the two stairs and you're back to stunties again, and
05:27then you're painting out the wires.
05:28And so you let them do it, you know, and then that's what makes it look real, makes it makes
05:32it feel like it hurts.
05:33It definitely looks like it hurts.
05:36You know, it's kind of a love letter to the fans, but it's kind of a love letter for us,
05:39too, just because we had worked on so many films and especially with cap so that, you know, kind of,
05:44you know, when you go into it, it's like, hey, what has to happen?
05:46And it's like, well, you have to have the shield throw, you know, you got to get a shield throw
05:49and there's somehow, you know, it's a lot of the love of the characters.
05:52I felt there was also love for that American tuchus that we saw.
05:56There is, the tuchus, yes.
05:58Dan, thanks so much for sharing so much about Marvel Studios Avengers Endgame.
06:02You guys, make sure you pick up the film now.
06:11It is mind blowing the work that goes into this from all the fight choreo to just building the world.
06:18Yeah. It's nuts.
06:19You mentioned the fight choreo, learning two sides of the same fight so you can fight yourself.
06:22I mean, it sounds like a blast. It sounds like my dream, but it sounds like a lot.
06:25Would you fight yourself?
06:26Oh, absolutely.
06:26Yeah, same. I would fight myself in a minute.
06:28Barbie, yeah. Well, listen, you don't have to fight yourself when you get Marvel Studios Avengers Endgame on digital and
06:35Blu-ray now.
06:36Oh, my gosh. I can't wait to watch all the deleted scenes of bloopers because that's my favorite part.
06:40Well, hey, in the comics, Captain America has fought himself before.
06:43Hey, that's true. It was actually a reality splintered evil version of himself in the Secret Empire comic book event.
06:52Yeah, yeah.
06:52He was not nice.
06:53Evil is putting it mildly.
06:55Yeah, he was bad.
06:56He was quite, quite an evil person.
06:58Yeah.
06:58Well, hey, everyone's a fan of Captain America, so the more the merrier, just not the bad ones.
07:02Yeah, just the good ones, like in Marvel Studios Avengers Endgame.
07:06All right, our next guest, Ingrid Michaelson, is actually taking her fandom to the next level with her new album,
07:12Stranger Songs.
07:13Check it out.
07:15I am here with the incredible musician Ingrid Michaelson. Hello.
07:19Hi.
07:20I'm so excited to talk to you, and especially because I've heard that you have some Marvel fandom going on.
07:27I do. My boyfriend's daughter and her boyfriend are obsessed with Marvel, so I had a Spider-Gwen cake made
07:32for her birthday, and I specifically designed it myself based on her colors, the pink, turquoise, blue, and white, and
07:39had a little Spider-Gwen cake topper.
07:42So you've also been pulled into the—
07:44I didn't make the cake. I designed the cake.
07:47That counts.
07:48And then—
07:48You were a cake architect.
07:49I picked it up and bought it. Yes, yes. Cake architect.
07:52But let's talk about your new album, Stranger Songs, which is incredible. I've been listening to it weirdly on repeat
08:01at my desk.
08:01Where did the album come from? I know you're a big Stranger Things fan, and clearly it's also in your
08:06family.
08:06Yes. So I love the show. I love nostalgia. I love sci-fi.
08:11And I wanted to do something that was different and inspiring, and this show specifically was just one of those
08:18things that I allowed myself to just get lost in.
08:20The way it makes me feel reminds me of my youth.
08:23So I started writing poems about the show, and then I was like, if I'm writing poems about the show,
08:28maybe I should write a song about this.
08:30And then it just started forming these songs from the point of view of all the characters.
08:35But if you haven't seen the show, you still can appreciate it. It's not like so specific that you won't
08:40get what the song's about.
08:42But if you know the show, you're like, oh, I know what that is. Oh, I know what that is.
08:45There's like little Easter eggs everywhere.
08:46I especially love the song Pretty, and I loved the sentiment that you shared with it about what that song
08:54was about. Would you talk a little bit about it?
08:56Yeah. So there's that scene where they dress Eleven up in a blonde wig and a pink dress, and Mike's
09:01like, oh, you look pretty. Good. You look pretty good.
09:04because he's embarrassed that he thinks she looks pretty. But the idea of what makes a girl or a woman
09:08pretty, what makes a woman beautiful,
09:11it's this sort of like blonde hair, pink dress trope that I think the Duffer brothers were playing up on,
09:17which then, of course, she throws off, basically casts aside. And it was just the concept of what makes a
09:22woman beautiful,
09:23I thought would be a really interesting take on that scene and how to make something very anthemic and powerful
09:29for people to listen to.
09:30I found it so stirring because there is something, I think you even say fight like a girl in the
09:36lyrics.
09:36She's the strongest character in the whole show. We don't see that often. A small girl is the strongest character.
09:44I mean, like from the beginning, like it's just really rad.
09:48Well, because you seem to have this affinity for girl superheroes, I thought, what if we did a girl superhero
09:56quiz? What do you think?
09:57Yeah, yeah. Great. I'm going to give you some questions. You're going to give me your answers.
10:00We're all going to be better for it. All right. You desperately need a snack. What do you grab?
10:06A. Nuts, of course. B. Dinosaur shaped nuggets. C. A slice of pizza. Or D. A plant-based superfood smoothie.
10:16A piece of pizza. Oh, yes. Well, you're from New York, so.
10:19Yes, Staten Island. Yeah, you know a good piece of za.
10:23Za. It's your day off. Where do you go?
10:26A. Out with my big group of friends. Nope.
10:30B. I hide out tinkering with a project. C. I take a ride and feel the wind in my hair.
10:37Or D. I take time to meditate.
10:39Uh, two. Tinkering around with a project. Excellent.
10:44Or B. Whatever it was.
10:45B2 it is. Time to get dressed. What is your style?
10:49A. Yoga pants are comfy and fashionable. B. Overalls and glasses, please.
10:55C. I love a jumpsuit and aviators. Or D. Something befitting royalty. Glasses and overalls.
11:03Because literally that's what I wear most of the time. Amazing.
11:07B. It is. Who is your best friend?
11:10A. I have tons of best friends. B. My pet and I are basically the same person.
11:16C. They're a mouthy dynamo and my partner in crime fighting.
11:21Or D. I'm more of a lone wolf or panther.
11:25C. C. A mouthy dynamo. I like it.
11:28If you were a song, you'd be A. My own hummable theme song. B. Mathematically perfect. C. Anything you can
11:38bump on the radio.
11:40Or D. The songs of my ancestors.
11:44Um, A. Your own hummable theme song. I love it.
11:48All right, Ingrid. It looks like you got mostly Bs, which means that you are most like Lunella Lafayette.
11:55That's so cute.
11:55Not only are you the smartest person on earth, you're a kid at heart and maybe in real life.
12:02Luckily, you probably have a giant dinosaur also to carry you around since you're not old enough to drive.
12:08How young am I?
12:09Eight.
12:09I love it.
12:10So young.
12:11My skin is so young.
12:13Well, well done. You're well on your way to also being a superhero.
12:17And congratulations on all of your amazing endeavors.
12:20Ingrid, thank you so much for talking with us.
12:22Thank you. Thanks for having me.
12:23Of course, you guys. Be sure to listen to Stranger songs wherever you listen to music.
12:27And check out ingridmichelson.com for tour dates and more.
12:31Bye.
12:31Thank you.
12:33Hey, Lunella Lafayette. Great choice. Great person to identify with.
12:37I appreciate solitude sometimes as well. So it works out perfectly.
12:40Yeah, it's great.
12:41We actually shot that interview with Ingrid before the news that David Harbour, who plays Detective Hopper on Stranger Things,
12:47will be in Marvel Studios' Black Widow.
12:49And I'm sure she would have been so pumped to know. So now you know, Ingrid, enjoy.
12:52Yeah. So actually, Lorraine, you got to talk to Mr. David Harbour at San Diego Comic Con.
12:58So hey, you know what, just for fun, let's take a quick look at David Harbour on the press tour
13:01for Marvel Studios' Black Widow at SDCC.
13:05What does it mean for you to join the Marvel Universe? You're no stranger to fandom.
13:11What?
13:11As it were.
13:12Look at what you did there.
13:13Right? Stranger things.
13:15What does it mean to you to be part of the MCU?
13:17I mean, look, these guys are like, these guys are like the best at what they do. So it's like,
13:24you know, it's like delicious.
13:29I mean, I don't know, it's wonderful. Like it's, the scripts are so good. The characters are so good. The
13:34directors, Kate Shortland is so good.
13:36The movies are all so unique in and of themselves. Black Widow is, in a way, a departure. I mean,
13:42it feels almost like an espionage movie.
13:44It's got these, all these elements to it. So it's like, wonderful. I mean, I wish I could say things
13:49that were interesting in these interviews, but all I could say is like, it's great. And it is, it's great.
13:54For us, that is great because we know nothing.
13:57Okay, okay.
13:58Thank you so much.
13:59Thank you.
14:01Awesome, awesome to see David Harbour's passion already coming out of his pores. I can't wait a minute.
14:06I can't, it's so good. I can't, I love when I see someone excited to join the MCU. So we
14:11can't wait.
14:11Yeah, I can't wait either to see Marvel Studios Black Widow in May of 2020, May 1st.
14:17Yeah, so we're going to attempt to be patient, deep breaths, and...
14:20Oh, it's going to be hard.
14:21A lot of, a lot of, a lot of meditation.
14:23Yep, that's it.
14:24All right, tell us what your favorite fight scene is in Marvel Studios Avengers Endgame, and use that hashtag, Earth's
14:30Mightiest Show.
14:31Tell us in the comments, and we might just use your comment in a future episode. But until then, we'll
14:35see you next time.
14:36Yeah, I'm Lorraine.
14:37And I'm Langston.
14:37And this is Marvel.
14:38Your universe.
14:45Thanks for watching Earth's Mightiest Show. If you like this, like this. Leave us a comment and subscribe to the
14:49Marvel Channel.
14:50Or click the box over there to watch our last episode. Lorraine, if you fought yourself, which one do you
14:54think would win?
14:55Me.
14:56But which one?
14:57Me, me.
14:58Which one is that?
15:00Either way, I win.
15:01True.
15:02medalist.
15:02Oh, yeah.
15:03There's a few guys.
15:03Don't.
