01:19The locations you can see on this exclusive video are going to be River, Security and Gridlock.
01:24And so the thing that's really interesting about them is that two of them are brand new

02:37So, capture the flag, imagine you had a flag,
02:39but the flag is a living person,
02:41armed with a shotgun and defending itself.
02:43So, you're actually playing capture the flag
02:45with a flag that could kill you.
02:46And so you have to go and you have to basically capture the flag
02:49by downing him and picking him up as a meat shield,
02:52and then you have to drag him back to this location to score a point.
02:55So, it's capture the flag, but done Gears style.
02:57So, another mode that we're showing is, again,
02:59sort of a reimagining of a known style,
03:02which is the wingman,
03:03where it's you and a partner playing against everybody else.
03:05We used to call it 2v2v2v2v2v2.
03:08to the fact that Gears is really all about co-op,
03:10that it didn't feel right to have this sort of
03:11just last man standing kind of gameplay.
03:13It didn't resonate in our world.
03:16So, when we looked at how we'd want to have that kind of gameplay,
03:19it really felt more like it had to be sort of a co-op experience.
03:21The third mode that you'll get to see in this exclusive video
03:24is something we call Guardian.
03:26And really what it is, it's Assassination 2.0,
03:29where Assassination was a mode we had in Gears 1,
03:32and that we actually fixed it or tweaked it a little bit
03:34in a title update to try to make it more fun.
03:36and we added the restriction that you had to execute the leader
03:39to kind of add to the Assassination feel.
03:41But even then we felt like we could do more and said,
03:44what if the leader was the reason you're able to respawn?
03:46So, as long as the leader is alive, your teammates can respawn,
03:49but as soon as the leader dies,
03:50then it's basically like Warzone, as soon as you die, you're out.
03:52By just making that simple little change,
03:54we were able to kind of create this whole new sort of feel to Guardian.
04:07So, some of the new weapons that we have in Gears of War 2 include
04:10the Scorcher, which is one of my personal favorites.
04:13It's essentially the flamethrower from Hell.
04:15It is basically the most beautiful but deadly flamethrower
04:20ever conceived in a video game.
04:22Then we also have the Gorgon, which is a locust burst pistol,
04:25which is tremendously powerful and also very heavy.
04:27And then we also have a shield that players can wield
04:30and they can carry that around and deploy that.
04:32You can actually carry the shield with the burst pistol
04:35and kind of use that as like a one-two punch.
04:37And then we have a poison grenade that players can use for area of denial
04:40in order to kind of throw this nasty, noxious cloud out.
04:43So, in Gears of War 1, we have the ability of using a grenade for grenade tagging.
04:47So, we found that it would be more interesting to actually take that idea
04:50of grenade tagging an opponent and actually apply it to the environment.
04:53So, now you can actually take any of our three grenades,
04:56with the poison grenade, the smoke grenade, the frag grenade,
04:58and you can actually attach it to a wall.
05:00And you can use that sort of as a proximity mine
05:02so that if any time an opponent goes by, the grenade will go off.
05:05One of the cool things in Gears 2 now as well is
05:07we added this concussive force to a smoke grenade.
05:10So, you can actually knock somebody down
05:12and disorient them briefly with a smoke grenade.
05:14It's a great new addition to the gameplay.
05:16One of the features of Gears of War 2 is this idea of portable cover.
05:20We have it both in the shield that you get to carry,
05:22the idea of the meat shield,
05:23the feature that sort of led to meat flags,
05:25this idea of being able to hold somebody as a captive
05:27and defend yourself while they block the shots for you.
05:30One of the big things about Gears 2 is just
05:32not just relying on a static cover that's already placed in the world,
05:35but being able to carry cover with you
05:37and move with cover as it moves through the level.
05:39So, in the first Gears,
05:41the chainsaw, the lancer, was a wonderful weapon
05:43and players would cut each other up and had a great time doing it.
05:46But we never really got into the whole idea
05:48of if two players came at each other with a chainsaw,
05:50what would happen?
05:51It was essentially random who won.
05:52And now we're answering that question in the sequel
05:54where players will lock on to each other
05:57and engage in this life or death struggle
05:59with sparks flying and the light flickering
06:01and they're grunting and they're pushing it
06:02and players are mashing the button
06:03and within three seconds,
06:04one player will wind up winning
06:06and cutting the other guy in half.
06:07And it's this tremendously memorable moment
06:09to see these two soldiers,
06:11these two huge warriors,
06:12dueling on the battlefield with these weapons.
06:21In Gears 2, when you knock somebody down but not out,
06:24first of all, they can try and crawl away from you.
06:26But if you do happen to get a hold of your enemy,
06:29you can first take them hostage,
06:31which is called meatbagging them,
06:32so you're kind of holding them as a human hostage,
06:33human shield.
06:34You can also finish them off
06:36by then breaking the character's neck
06:37and dropping them on the ground.
06:38Or if you want to,
06:39while the foe is crawling away,
06:40you can hit the Y button to do an execution.
06:43and there's all sorts of crazy ones
06:45from using the long-shot sniper rifle,
06:48like a sledgehammer,
06:50to using the torque bow to popping the enemy's head off,
06:52to climbing on top of them
06:53and just beating the crap out of them.
06:55So there's just tons of them there this time around,
06:57and they're a great way to finish off the round
06:59and get your buddies cheering on Xbox Live.
07:01So in Gears 1, we found that a lot of players
07:03felt that evading towards their foes,
07:06rolling, essentially,
07:07and shotgunning at the end of that evade
07:08was an effective technique.
07:10And that really wasn't the game that we envisioned,
07:11and so we hooked in this idea of stopping power
07:14where as players get shot
07:15and they actually will slow down progressively
07:17with more bullets
07:18so that players can no longer just run blindly
07:20at each other, gladiator style.
07:22They actually have to be a little bit more tricky
07:23and use the cover system and flank
07:25and deal with suppressing fire from their buddies
07:28in order to really earn their kills this time around.
07:33Gears 2 is bigger, better, and more badass,
07:35and the multiplayer most certainly shows that.
07:37We have amazing new game modes.
07:39that we're shipping with at least seven.
07:41We have great new multiplayer arenas.
07:43We have nasty new weapons,
07:44grisly new executions,
07:46a larger scale of the multiplayer,
07:48and I think players are going to be pleasantly surprised
07:50with the complete package that we're delivering for them.
