00:00Hello, my name is Dan Tudge, and I am the Executive Producer and Project Director on the Dragon Age franchise.
00:05Today, I'm going to introduce you to Bioware's dark heroic fantasy, Dragon Age Origins.
00:11In this video, we're going to introduce you to origin stories.
00:14We're going to explore the King's Camp and show you how origins affect your story.
00:18The choices you make in your origin story will change the way you perceive the world, and the way the
00:22world perceives you.
00:24Now, we have taken the path of the human noble origin story.
00:27Let's see how the dialogue plays out with this quartermaster.
00:30Have you seen an elf running about? Young woman, red hair, carrying a suit of chain.
00:38Blast it. Where did she go? That suit better be patched up when she gets back or by the Maker
00:43or...
00:44Oh, pardon my manners. My troubles are no concern of yours, I'm sure.
00:48I'm the quartermaster. Did you come for supplies?
00:52Maker be with you in the coming battle, friend.
00:55So that's a fairly simple exchange, and we're not really interested in helping him find the missing elf, but it
01:00seems like he's not very happy with her.
01:02Now, in the world of Dragon Age, elves are often treated as second-class citizens, almost as slaves.
01:08Now, let's head over here for another conversation. We've got someone that's got himself into a bit of trouble.
01:13Someone finally comes and talks to the lone prisoner.
01:16I don't suppose you've come to sentence me.
01:20No. They put someone like me in a cage until someone important has time to decide what to do with
01:24me.
01:25I don't suppose you have a bit of kindness in you.
01:27All I want is food and water.
01:29They haven't fed me since I was locked up, and I'm starving.
01:34Because you might want something I don't need.
01:36Them Circle Wizards got a chest they keep things in.
01:39Magical things.
01:40And I stole the key.
01:41That's why I'm here.
01:43I got one of them drunk, took his key, and tried to sneak to the chest.
01:46They assumed I was deserting.
01:48I can't use it from here.
01:49But I'd trade you for some food and water.
01:53I swallowed it.
01:54But it's come back into my possession since then, so to speak.
02:01Now, Dragon Age Origins gives the player the opportunity to make moral choices that can have ramifications down the road.
02:08For my human noble character, I'm not going to play nice.
02:13Making a choice like this may catch up with us later on.
02:17Now that we've shown you a bit of the human noble experience,
02:19we're going to switch to a new character with a different origin story.
02:23This time we've chosen Catriona, a female elven mage, from the mage origin.
02:28Now let's see how this plays out based on the player's origin.
02:31You there, elf.
02:32Where's my armor?
02:33And why you dress so preposterously?
02:37What?
02:38Oh, uh, you're the one who arrived with the Grey Warden.
02:42I, uh, please forgive my rudeness.
02:44There are so many elves running about, and I've been waiting for...
02:48That has simply been so hectic.
02:50I never thought...
02:51But please, pardon my terrible manners.
02:54I, uh, I am just the Quartermaster.
02:56A simple man.
02:57No one special.
02:59Now, as I mentioned before, city elves are considered to be second-class citizens.
03:04And the Quartermaster clearly fumbled on his words when he realized
03:08that we were actually a Grey Warden, and not some common elf.
03:12Dragon Age Origins really tells your story,
03:15and you will control how you play and experience it.
03:17We've just come up to the prisoner,
03:19who we chose to kill when we were a human noble.
03:22Now let's play it a little differently.
03:23Someone finally comes and talks to the lone prisoner.
03:26I don't suppose you've come to sentence me.
03:29No.
03:30They put someone like me in a cage until someone important has time to decide what to do with me.
03:34I don't suppose you have a bit of kindness in you.
03:37All I want is food and water.
03:39They haven't fed me since I was locked up and I'm starving.
03:42I expect nobody thought of it with all the battles and such.
03:46I'm a deserter.
03:47Or so they think.
03:48I bet there's no arguing them out of it, though.
03:51Armies are funny that way.
03:53I wasn't deserting.
03:55But when you catch someone sneaking around camp in the middle of the night,
03:58what else are you going to think?
03:59Does it matter?
04:01All I want is a bit of food and water.
04:04Just ask my guard for his.
04:06He's still got some dinner.
04:07I saw him put it in his coat.
04:09So this time, we've decided to help the prisoner.
04:13Lucky dog.
04:15You Grey Wardens get to ride with the King
04:17while I'm left with the drudgery of guarding this deserter.
04:20They should have just hanged him.
04:22and put his head on a pike as an example.
04:25Don't expect it was an enlightening conversation.
04:28Now this character has a high persuade skill,
04:30and we're going to actually use that skill
04:32to persuade the guard to give us his food.
04:34that is why he'd be mine.
04:36All right, all right.
04:38Well, I guess the poor fella could stand to have one meal in his belly
04:40before he hangs.
04:42I don't know why you care.
04:43I had nothing to do with it, though.
04:45If anyone asks why he's burping,
04:47I'm going to say it was you,
04:48just so you know.
04:52So?
04:53Brought me some food of you?
04:55I'm so hungry I could faint dead away.
04:59Much obliged.
05:00So we've helped the prisoner,
05:02but we were completely unaware that he even had a key.
05:04What's interesting here
05:05is that the moral choices you make affect
05:07not only your story,
05:09but the items that you can receive.
05:11We helped him out,
05:12felt good about it,
05:13but never actually acquired a valuable item.
05:16Sometimes, being nice doesn't always get you what you want.
05:18Now, let's continue to explore the camp.
05:20What do we have here?
05:22I heard the new Grey Warden recruit was from the Circle.
05:25I don't believe we've met,
05:26but I've certainly heard a lot about your talent.
05:29My name is Wyn,
05:30and I congratulate you on your harrowing.
05:32Marvelous work.
05:34The fate is a dangerous place.
05:36Even though we're playing as an elf,
05:38not all faces are unfriendly.
05:40So, a Grey Warden,
05:42fighting alongside the King.
05:44Not too shabby for someone just out of apprenticeship?
05:48Wyn has recognized you as a mage
05:50that has undergone the harrowing.
05:51This is a sacred rite of passage
05:53that is required by all mages.
05:55The harrowing is one of the things
05:57that you would have experienced
05:58in your mage origin story.
06:00Well, don't let this old mage
06:01distract you from your duties.
06:03You can see that by selecting
06:05to play the mage origin story,
06:07my experience throughout the world
06:08will be very different.
06:10As a human noble warrior,
06:11we would have never had this conversation with Wyn.
06:14Now, let's meet the Ash Warriors as an elf.
06:17Do that. Elf.
06:18What's your name?
06:20Uh, it's Pick, sir.
06:23Go tell Turnlow Game
06:25that the war party's ready to begin scouting.
06:27We'll send word if we find anything amiss.
06:29Yes, sir. Right away, sir.
06:35Maker's Breath, another elf.
06:37What do you want?
06:38Not in particular,
06:40except for them being so thin-boned.
06:42You make good messengers sometimes.
06:44Is there something you wanted?
06:46You can see by the way the Ash Warrior
06:48treated both ourselves and Pick,
06:50but he really has no patience or respect for elves.
06:53Clearly, he couldn't see past the years.
06:56Now we're heading into an area
06:57that hasn't been shown publicly before.
07:00Welcome to the Kokari Wilds,
07:02a dense forest whose beauty and serenity
07:04are contrasted by imminent danger and darkness.
07:07Twisting it, creatures.
07:10With the evolution of Pause and Play,
07:12you can pause the action at any time.
07:13You can zoom out,
07:15you can pan around,
07:16you can actually play in this view,
07:17just like Baldur's Gate.
07:18You can zoom right back into the action.
07:24So now we're playing the Human Noble Warrior again.
07:27The tactics for this battle is going to change.
07:29It's going to be very up-close and personal,
07:31and involve a lot of hand-to-hand combat.
07:35Yeah, Jets!
07:52And that!
07:54Excellent!
07:58Next, we're going to introduce you
07:59to a character named Morrigan.
08:01There's already been a lot of speculation about her,
08:03and as you may have seen,
08:05she's the face and the blood of our logo.
08:07She's a mysterious character
08:09that you are meeting for the first time.
08:11Let's meet Morrigan.
08:14Well, well.
08:15What have we here?
08:20Are you a vulture, I wonder?
08:24A scavenger poking amidst a corpse
08:26whose bones were long since cleaned?
08:29Or merely an intruder
08:32come into these dark-spawn-filled wilds of mine
08:35in search of easy prey?
08:38We don't want to give away too much about Morrigan at this point,
08:41except to say that she's a very interesting character
08:43who will definitely have an impact on your story.
08:46You'll learn more about Morrigan
08:47the closer we get to launch.
08:50We hope you enjoy this introduction
08:51to the origin stories.
