Europeans anxious over wars and push for more EU independence, study finds

As conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East intensify, Europeans are increasingly uneasy about global instability. How worried are they, and do they want the EU to step up its role on defence and international influence?

00:00Amid wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, what are EU citizens' biggest worries?
00:09In these uncertain times, two-thirds of Europeans would like the EU to play a greater role in
00:14protecting them against global crisis and security risks, according to a new Eurobarometer
00:20survey.
00:21More than 7 in 10 EU respondents say they are highly worried about the active conflicts
00:26near the European Union as the wars in Ukraine and now the Middle East rage on.
00:31Among the 16 EU countries where this was the most common concern, Spanish, Italian and Cypriot
00:37respondents were the most likely to express significant worry about the wars.
00:42In addition, Spaniards, Italians and Cypriots also tend to be the most anxious about the
00:48EU's dependence on known EU countries for defence.
00:50In contrast, the lowest levels of worry came from Slovenia, Latvia, Estonia and Czechia.
00:57With the surging energy prices caused by the war in the Middle East, EU citizens are also
01:02concerned about the EU's reliance on known EU countries for its energy supply.
01:06The largest shares of those highly worried about this were seen in Italy, Spain and Poland,
01:12while the lowest levels of worry were recorded in Denmark, Lithuania and Sweden.
01:1789% of respondents say that EU member states should be more united to face current global
01:23challenges and 86% want the EU to have a stronger voice at the international level.
