00:14When the player first arrives in this
00:16fictitious African country that we've created
00:18he hasn't really been briefed about
00:19this conflict. He's not here because of that
00:22conflict. He's not here to get involved
00:23with what the factions are up to
00:25and why they're fighting each other. He's really here
00:27because this arms dealer
00:29the Jackal has managed to
00:31embarrass or anger or
00:33create some kind of anxiety for
00:35some external force and we never specify
00:37who that external force is.
00:39But whatever it is, the Jackal's done enough
00:41bad stuff that he's become a
00:43liability and the player's
00:45client, whoever that may be, has decided that
00:47they need to get rid of this guy permanently
00:49and that's where the player comes in. Obviously there's
00:51a lot of different characters because the storyline
00:53involves a lot of different opportunities
00:55for the player to get to know the different factions
00:57in the game, the different warlords
00:59that control those factions. And these are
01:01some really, really bad guys by kind of
01:03any measure you care to apply.
01:05We're talking about, you know, warlords
01:07who are sort of self-serving. They're basically
01:09glorified criminals. You know, they're not really
01:11interested in trying to make this country a better
01:13place by taking it over. They're really just looking at
01:15plundering it for whatever they can get out of it.
01:17But as bad as those guys are, they're really
01:19just a drop in the bucket compared to
01:21to the player's main target, and that's the Jackal.
01:24The Jackal is a notorious
01:26arms dealer and basically showed up
01:27with boatloads full of guns,
01:29full of old Soviet, you know, AK-47s
01:31and RPGs, and essentially
01:33armed both sides of the conflict.
01:35The other tool that we have in the story
01:37for trying to convey the stakes
01:39to the player is Ruben
01:41Alua Gembi. He's a journalist character.
01:43He's sort of an exiled Nigerian
01:45journalist who's covered a lot of different
01:47wars across Africa. He's been
01:49in the game's fictitious setting
01:51for literally months,
01:53and he has a better idea than anybody
01:55about kind of what the cost has been in this conflict,
01:58who the different sides are,
01:59what all the different games are that are getting played,
02:01who the Jackal is. In fact,
02:03we started out months ago with a blog
02:05that was available for people to read
02:07and is up right now,
02:09that kind of recounts Ruben's whole experience
02:11visiting this country for the first time,
02:14kind of coming to terms
02:15with the nature of the conflict and learning
02:17what he can about who's involved,
02:19how he first encounters the Jackal,
02:21how he first encounters all the different mercenaries.
02:22There are characters mentioned in the blog
02:24that are unique to the blog,
02:25and there are characters mentioned in the blog
02:27that are definitely part of the game.
02:28So we definitely encourage people to go check that out,
02:31because it has little hints of information there
02:33that players might find useful for sure.
02:35Part of the challenge for the player is that he really starts out
02:38at a serious disadvantage.
02:40Not just in terms of his power and the weapons
02:42that he has access to,
02:43that's something that probably players are used to,
02:45but in the fact that he has no reputation,
02:48nobody knows who he is,
02:49he's just another hired gun in a country full of hired guns.
02:52He's also sick with malaria.
02:54Everyone around him can look at him and say,
02:57this guy's on his last legs,
02:58he might not be here in another two days.
03:00So everyone's kind of underestimating him,
03:02and we feel like that's kind of an interesting place
03:04to the player to be in,
03:05where at some point he's going to be like,
03:06all right, these people are underestimating me,
03:08and I'm going to show them, you know,
03:10I'm going to show them that I am every bit as much
03:12of a badass as everyone else is around here,
03:14and that I'm certainly more than up to the task
03:16of taking on a guy like the Jackal.
03:18I'm the guy who's going to be the one to take him down.
03:19And in order to do that, yeah,
03:21he's going to have to make a deal with the devil for sure.
