00:56Black Watch is a special forces branch of the US military
01:00They're top secret, they're beyond top secret
01:02They're set up specifically to deal with biological outbreaks
01:07These are the guys that will go in, wipe out entire families, neighborhoods, buildings
01:13And not bat an eye on it
01:14They are completely convinced that what they are doing is right
01:17And that they're the last line of defense against what they're fighting
01:20A viral outbreak starts in New York
01:23And various neighborhoods of the city become no-go zones
01:26And basically they're brought in to clean up the mess
01:30And the poor marines have no idea what's going on
01:32But the Black Watch are sinister, effective, they know exactly what the virus does
01:37And they're on the lookout for both the player character and other things infected with the virus
01:43The Black Watch are constantly developing weapons through the story of the game
01:47To counter the player's abilities and prototype
01:49So they're not just a static force, they're not just a snapshot at the start of the game
01:52In which they roll more and more guys in through the game
01:56Once they start realizing and analyzing what the player can do
01:59They deploy new technologies to the field
02:01They'll hunker down, they'll get heavier weapons on you
02:04They won't run, they're used to things like this
02:06They've seen it before
02:08The Specialist is Black Watch's best
02:11We wanted a human foe that Alex could face directly and have a chance of losing
02:16We call him the right man for the wrong job
02:19The ultimate bad guy that comes out in the field when Alex has revealed himself too much
02:24He's dealt with things like Alex before
02:27What makes someone want to become a Black Watch soldier?
02:30Are they just brutal killers?
02:32Are they humanitarians?
02:34Do I shoot the innocent because I'm crazy?
02:38Or do I shoot the innocent to protect them because the virus is going to be worse?
02:43So we start there of what is the mindset behind these soldiers who are Black Watch?
02:50What does it take to become a Black Watch soldier?
02:53They're a pretty terrifying bunch of people
02:54Not just to the player, but also to the inhabitants of New York
02:58Germany in 1932, you know, when they set up their uniforms
03:03None of it was an accident
03:04They set it up to look intimidating
03:07And a force to be reckoned with
03:09And we did that with Black Watch
03:11That we started with their helmets, their clothes
03:14These guys don't run
03:15These guys stand their ground
03:17And they're not afraid of a fight
03:19That helps with what are they wearing?
03:21What do they look like?
03:23And Kev here could probably show you a couple examples of what I'm talking about
03:27The idea behind these guys is they have to look scary
03:29So what I did was just to make them a little bit more scary
03:32I removed the eyes, removed the face
03:34So you don't have that sort of connection to the more sort of human aspects
03:40So you can't ever see their face
03:42So you get right away the feeling that you cannot reason with these people
03:46That they're almost subhuman
03:48Cold, ruthless
03:51They don't have any qualms about taking extreme action
03:57To deal with the problem at hand
03:59And I think they represent in our game themes of government overreaching its power
04:05In a state of crisis
04:06And clearly that's a theme in our game
04:08And the player is going to be reacting to that
04:10And seeing kind of the extreme representation if it happened on U.S. soil
04:14There's the old saying, you know, fight not with monsters lest you become a monster
04:19You have to become your enemy to win
04:21Biological weapons are unforgiving
04:23They don't care about families
04:25They don't care about loved ones
04:27Men, women, children, interrelationships
04:29It just spreads
04:30That's all it does
