00:02The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court has ordered the Kuala Lumpur Mayor to pay 824,180 ringgit in damages to a
00:12couple who lost their son due to a fallen tree in the city three years ago.
00:18The then 30-year-old Poonman Larp was struck by the tree from a road divider along Jalan Kuching near
00:25the Serlayang Market on March 22, 2023.
00:30He sustained severe injuries and was treated at Serlayang Hospital before being pronounced dead two days later.
00:38The court ruled in his grounds of judgement, dated March 9, two weeks ago, that the tree was under City
00:46Hall's care and that the incident would not have occurred in the absence of negligence in the monitoring and maintenance
00:53of the tree.
00:53It said the City Hall's responsibility was clear and established as they also admitted that the tree was excessively large
01:03and had not been properly maintained.
01:05The court awarded 26,180 ringgit for funeral expenses, 768,000 ringgit for loss of dependency and the remaining in
01:18bereavement damages to the couple.
01:20The trial was held over two days in September, 2025, during which four witnesses for both the plaintiffs and the
01:29defendant were called to testify.
01:32The City Hall has appealed against the decision in the High Court.
