DBKL identifies 28 high-risk trees to be felled in the city

00:00Kuala Lumpur City Hall said some 28 high-risk trees in the city will be felled soon.

00:08The local authority said arborists certified by them had identified the trees in their

00:13latest periodic inspection in February.

00:16They said since 2019, they have been conducting inspections on trees aged over 30 years or

00:23with a circumference exceeding 1.5 metres.

00:27They said a total of 175 trees were high-risk with most of them exceeding 50 years old.

00:34They said city hall workers and contractors had felled 147 of them.

00:40City Hall said the high-risk trees are identified through the use of resistographs, PCOS tomographs

00:46or visual assessments to detect damaged or decayed branches or roots, leaning tree structures

00:52and cracks in branches and tree bases.

00:55They said they were taking remedial actions including pruning, crown reduction and felling

01:00on such trees.

01:02The city hall statement comes after a massive tree fell on Jalan Sultan Ismail, killing

01:07one motorist and injuring two others during a downpour on May 7.

01:12The incident damaged a total of 17 vehicles and disrupted monorail services.

01:19City Hall said the fallen tree was located on private land and maintenance came under

01:24the landowner's responsibility.

01:26They said they will help in facilitating any claims to the appropriate parties.

01:32City Hall's tree management policies have been under scrutiny in recent years after

01:37several incidents happened in the city.

01:40Another giant tree fell on motorcycles and cars along Jalan Ampang, causing a casualty

01:45in May 2018.
