The Examiner's Joe Colbrook explains about Seaport .

00:00Despite what this sign might have you believe, there's no part of Launceston that's actually
00:05called the seaport. But that could all change. For the past 25 years, this part of the town,
00:13known for its waterfront dining and accommodation, has been appearing on maps as just another
00:19part of Launceston. However, the council has applied to place names Tasmania to have it
00:24gazetted as an unbounded locality. It's almost but not quite the same as creating a new suburb.
00:33For instance, all these businesses and homes along the waterfront will still have their
00:38addresses listed as being part of Launceston. However, creating the unbounded locality means
00:44that the seaport can start appearing on maps and on signage.
00:50While this might seem a trivial change to anyone who's lived in Launceston for more
00:55than a minute, after all, we all know this place as the seaport, visitors to the city generally
01:00don't and can often miss it because it's tucked behind this levee wall, meaning that tourism
01:05operators and other businesses miss out. If you've got an idea for a place in Launceston
01:11that also deserves an official name, sing out in the comments or send us a letter to mail
01:16at examiner.com.au.
