00:00:01What three words describe Meghan Markle?
00:00:06Hmm.
00:00:10Stylish.
00:00:13Sophisticated.
00:00:15Hmm.
00:00:17Smart.
00:00:19Intelligence.
00:00:21Calculating.
00:00:23Assertive.
00:00:24Determined.
00:00:27Innovative.
00:00:28Innovative.
00:00:30It's a tough one just to keep it to three.
00:00:34Strong-minded.
00:00:36Self-aware.
00:00:37Ruthless.
00:00:40She is someone who is ambitious.
00:00:42She wants more.
00:00:45Ambitious.
00:00:47Ambitious.
00:00:49Ambitious.
00:00:50Ambitious.
00:00:51Ambitious.
00:00:52Ambitious.
00:00:53Ambitious.
00:00:53Ambitious.
00:01:06Megan grows up in Los Angeles with dreams of being world famous.
00:01:12She was brought up with enormous confidence in herself.
00:01:15Megan had incredible drive, incredible ambition.
00:01:18She first finds fame playing an assertive paralegal in drama.
00:01:24Suits.
00:01:24Because you were too busy ogling me to listen to a word I've said.
00:01:27She had a pretty significant part.
00:01:30That's how her fame started to grow.
00:01:32As Megan's star rises, those close to her, including her first husband, pay a heavy price.
00:01:40I think that there is a pattern of ghosting people.
00:01:45I think his friends just felt she cast him aside.
00:01:48See you again.
00:01:49Bye.
00:01:50Then her relationship with Prince Harry makes her the most famous woman in the world.
00:01:55Congratulations.
00:01:56Megan had the world at her feet.
00:02:00He was all there waiting for her.
00:02:04But Megan's new popularity comes at a cost.
00:02:08From the moment Megan's name was made public, that's when everything changed.
00:02:16That was the first taste where she first realized that this was going to be, like, something she'd never experienced
00:02:22before.
00:02:23We called it the new normal.
00:02:25She could not go out with her friends anymore without paparazzi being there.
00:02:31And behind palace gates, she struggles to fit in with the royal family.
00:02:36She describes William Macape as being very cold.
00:02:42Maybe she thought she would have equal status.
00:02:47But she was never going to.
00:02:57Meghan Markle has been dating Prince Harry for nearly two years.
00:03:01And now she's about to fulfill her dream of being the most famous person in the world.
00:03:08Her royal wedding will have a global audience.
00:03:13But in the lead-up to the big day, there are reports that the stress of becoming a royal bride
00:03:18is getting to her.
00:03:23Stories of tensions and of the treatment of staff and of difficult arguments over arrangements for the wedding started.
00:03:33And from that moment on, they never really went away.
00:03:39Meghan finds her demands frustrated by the palace.
00:03:43But her biggest wedding headache comes from 5,000 miles away.
00:03:52Meghan's father, Thomas Markle, has been photographed by the paparazzi.
00:03:57Her dad, Thomas Markle, really suffered in the build-up to the wedding because, of course, there was a lot
00:04:02of attention on him.
00:04:03He was over in Mexico.
00:04:05He was a bit overweight.
00:04:06He was quite scruffy.
00:04:08It wasn't a great portrait.
00:04:10He was continuously packed, walking out of a gas station with a six-pack.
00:04:16But then, more flattering pictures begin to appear in the press.
00:04:22He was pictured having a suit fitted, doing exercise by a rubbish tip to get his muscles up, reading an
00:04:31atlas of Great Britain.
00:04:35And she said to her dad, look, dad, did you know these pictures were being taken?
00:04:40And he said no, and she said, I believe you.
00:04:43But Meghan is dealt a devastating blow when news reporters break a story from America.
00:04:50We began with those new questions about Meghan Markle's father.
00:04:54The Mail on Sunday alleging that Thomas Markle participated in staged photos for the paparazzi.
00:05:07The Mail on Sunday got CCTV of Thomas Markle setting up these pap shots.
00:05:16Seen through this new lens, these photographs look staged.
00:05:21He wanted the pictures to show him as a proactive person.
00:05:26The problem was he was paid for those photos.
00:05:29The newspapers reportedly pay $100,000 for these photographs.
00:05:35Harry and Meghan shagged at him down the phone.
00:05:38They'd had a furious argument.
00:05:43Meghan would have been embarrassed.
00:05:46Harry just wouldn't have understood why this was happening.
00:05:50Meghan and Harry were so hardline about the press that she couldn't forgive her dad for doing that.
00:05:58Following the argument, Thomas Markle makes a statement to the press.
00:06:12Thomas decided not to go to the wedding, leaving Meghan very much concerned about not only his mental state, but
00:06:22his physical state.
00:06:28The media goes into a frenzy as it's followed by another alarming announcement.
00:06:34Breaking news.
00:06:35Meghan Markle's father, Thomas Senior, has reportedly suffered a heart attack.
00:06:39She couldn't get hold of him when he apparently had a heart attack and was in hospital.
00:06:45It caused her a lot of stress in the days before her big wedding to Harry.
00:06:53She was clearly very hurt by what had happened to her relationship with her father.
00:07:01And I think that was very much the beginning of the serious disintegration of his relationship with Meghan.
00:07:08As Meghan strives to become royal, the scandal around her father is increasingly at odds with her elevated status.
00:07:15I think she's ashamed of her father.
00:07:18And I do think that that's why we don't see him.
00:07:21I do wonder whether Meghan really wants her dad there.
00:07:23It's almost like she wanted to sort of bury him until the last possible moment when it was too late
00:07:28in case he embarrassed her.
00:07:30Other members of Meghan's family are threatening to ruin the image of the modern royal she wants to project.
00:07:38At the very beginning, her half-siblings, Samantha and Thomas Junior, were being very complimentary about Meghan.
00:07:45Samantha and Thomas Markle Junior, seen here alongside their father, believed they had a good relationship with Meghan.
00:07:54Of course, they were all hoping for an invite to the wedding.
00:07:57But an invite isn't forthcoming.
00:08:00They hadn't seen her for a number of years.
00:08:02They didn't spend a lot of time together as siblings.
00:08:04And so the relationship was not a close one.
00:08:13When that invite didn't come, her own brother wrote a letter to Harry, which he released to the press.
00:08:21Saying, don't marry her, she's all wrong, she's manipulative, she's using you.
00:08:27And they felt humiliated, they felt ostracised, and they reacted.
00:08:32It must have been difficult for Meghan, the attention, the scrutiny, the difficulties.
00:08:38It must have been very hurtful to see, you know, her family, her Markle family, be so rude about her.
00:08:47As Meghan contends with these dramas, behind palace doors, another is unfolding.
00:08:54This time with her soon-to-be sister-in-law.
00:09:02There was a problem with Princess Charlotte's bridesmaid dress.
00:09:09Kate said to Meghan, look, the bridesmaid dress doesn't fit.
00:09:13Charlotte's really upset.
00:09:16Meghan said, yeah, have it tailored.
00:09:18Send the dress to Kensington Palace, my tailor's there.
00:09:28Catherine apparently said, no, it has to be started from scratch.
00:09:45Reportedly, one or other of the women, or both, cried.
00:09:49In the aftermath, Meghan reveals it's Kate who tries to smooth things over.
00:09:57She apologised, and I've forgiven her.
00:10:00What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn't do, but that happened
00:10:07to me.
00:10:09I think it's really important for people to understand the truth.
00:10:12What I heard was that Catherine went round to Nottingham Cottage, turned up with flowers, and apologised.
00:10:19And I think in the moment, Meghan was polite, but then afterwards very much disposed of these flowers.
00:10:30With her family in chaos and tensions behind the scenes at a high, Meghan awaits the big day with trepidation.
00:10:54Hello, a very good afternoon to you.
00:10:57We are live in Windsor for you this afternoon.
00:11:00The area is absolutely buzzing with excitement, as final preparations are made for that royal wedding.
00:11:09News crews excitedly broadcast around the world.
00:11:13As guests arrive, it appears Meghan, along with Harry, is using this day as a way of connecting with high
00:11:20-profile celebrities.
00:11:22David? David? Can we just get a picture?
00:11:24I think it's really interesting. The A-list were there, whether it was the Beckhams, whether it was Oprah Winfrey
00:11:29and George Clooney.
00:11:30It was a great way of associating themselves with some of the biggest stars in the world.
00:11:35It was a way of her bringing Hollywood into the royal family.
00:11:40Somebody throws a microphone in Clooney's face and says, how do you know the happy couple?
00:11:44Because I don't.
00:11:46Not one member of Meghan Markle's family was there except for her mother.
00:11:52And the entire world is watching? That's not normal.
00:12:00Traveling to the chapel, Meghan puts all of her problems behind her.
00:12:09The world sees stunning images of Meghan's beautiful Givenchy dress, designed by Claire Waite Keller.
00:12:17With a veil embroidered with the flowers of the Commonwealth, it's estimated to have cost £100,000.
00:12:27At this moment, Meghan Markle is the most famous woman on the planet.
00:12:34But with her father absent, the then Prince Charles steps in.
00:12:39What was so moving for me was to see Charles take her down the aisle.
00:12:47Given everything that happened, Charles having to stand in, she looked absolutely calm.
00:12:56As if nothing would interrupt her wedding day to Prince Harry.
00:13:02And then you could hear, on the mic, Harry said, when Charles took her to him.
00:13:12That to me brought tears in my eyes.
00:13:14It was beautiful.
00:13:17Meghan, will you...
00:13:19With over two billion people watching the lavish wedding,
00:13:23Meghan is finally a global icon.
00:13:27And forsaking all others, be faithful to him, as long as you both shall live.
00:13:35I will.
00:13:38The wedding was the one moment for her to have completely reinvent herself.
00:13:42And with you, the families and friends of Harry and Meghan...
00:13:47The whole world was in love with her.
00:13:58It feels purposeful, it feels right, it feels that this is a new day.
00:14:05How wrong we all were.
00:14:22Meghan Markle has gone from a broken home in L.A.
00:14:26To marrying a prince and becoming one of the most famous women in the world.
00:14:31Thank you, thank you.
00:14:32Thank you very much.
00:14:33Welcome to Trevor.
00:14:36Just a month after the wedding, Meghan relishes the opportunity to begin her new role as a working royal.
00:14:44Right after the wedding, Meghan Markle gets her first engagement with Queen Elizabeth,
00:14:49which was a lot sooner than the Princess of Wales Catherine got to be seen with the Queen.
00:14:56She thought Meghan Markle was going to be a very valuable asset to the British royal family.
00:15:02The outing is a chance for her to learn the ropes, alongside the most qualified teacher in the world.
00:15:10The Queen welcomed her in.
00:15:12She did everything she could to help Meghan get acquainted with the ways of the royal family.
00:15:18The crowds loved it.
00:15:22It went down really well.
00:15:36Meghan begins to use her royal status to charm the public.
00:15:51Meghan could touch anything and really make it into gold.
00:15:54And also what was great about her was she was really putting her fame to some really important issues.
00:16:01There's one really good example of that, which is with the community around Grenfell Tower.
00:16:07An awful, awful tragedy.
00:16:09Meghan got to know the community that lives around there, a very diverse community.
00:16:13It's great that you had the rest of these, but again, we just said at the beginning, that simple reminder
00:16:17of how we make it together.
00:16:19The Grenfell fire left so many families displaced, outside of how many deaths it caused.
00:16:25And I remember saying, well, can we, can we do something?
00:16:28We need to go down there and do something.
00:16:31She paid them many private visits.
00:16:34They needed to extend the opening hours of the kitchen so they could feed the community.
00:16:41Meghan didn't just give them some money to do it.
00:16:44She came up with the idea, well, let's make a cookbook.
00:16:46Your favorite recipes from your various different countries of origin.
00:16:50And then let's sell that cookbook and use those proceeds to extend the kitchen.
00:16:55That was a really, really clever idea.
00:16:59Meghan enthusiastically recounts why she became involved.
00:17:04Working on this project for the past nine months has been a tremendous labor of love.
00:17:10I had just recently moved to London and I felt so immediately embraced by the women in the kitchen.
00:17:16Your warmth and your kindness.
00:17:19It was highlighting the power of the royal family, highlighting the power of celebrity as Han as well.
00:17:24And she was doing it in a really good way.
00:17:35Five months after their wedding, Meghan joins Harry on their first international royal tour.
00:17:46Their arrival coincides with a piece of exciting news which makes headlines across the globe.
00:17:53Kensington Palace has confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are expecting their first child.
00:17:59Now, the news was announced just a short while ago.
00:18:01Meghan Markle expecting a baby in the spring of 2019.
00:18:05The couple have just started, actually, a royal tour.
00:18:09Their first.
00:18:10It was a fantastic moment.
00:18:11You know, I think everybody was really happy for her.
00:18:14You know, we knew that she wanted children.
00:18:16We knew that Harry did too.
00:18:17So this was going to be a little perfect family.
00:18:19On the face of it, that Australia tour was an absolute triumph.
00:18:30As they walked out of the Opera House steps, a lot of Sydney had come to cheer.
00:18:40She was the perfect person to really drive the royal family into a new sort of era of being young,
00:18:48vibrant, sexy, cool, relatable.
00:18:51And that felt like a really strong thing for the royal family as a brand and also her as a
00:18:56brand too.
00:18:57And afterwards, she turned to Harry and allegedly said,
00:19:05I can't believe you're not getting paid for this.
00:19:08I think it's fair to infer that comment was a warning sign of what was to come.
00:19:22Keep in mind, Meghan Markle did not get rid of her team once she marries Prince Harry.
00:19:28So she has L.A. agents, New York agents, publicists from both sides of the coasts whispering in her ear.
00:19:38And now she's having to turn down multibillion dollar deals because she's a working member of the royal family.
00:19:46I do think that money is a very important thing to Meghan because for a long time she didn't have
00:19:51it.
00:19:52And now all of a sudden, you know, she has the opportunity to make it rain.
00:19:56And the royal family is like, absolutely not.
00:20:01I think it must have been hard for her.
00:20:02She's ambitious and that ambition, if it's restricted, can be quite difficult to live with.
00:20:14The tour then heads to the South Pacific.
00:20:22Meghan uses her first solo royal engagement to show her ambition to be a humanitarian.
00:20:29We were told the reason we were there was because it was showcasing female artisans, female entrepreneurs.
00:20:41Brilliant. Exactly the sort of thing that Duchess of Sussex wants to support.
00:20:44And I was in the market and I watched her come in and immediately her body language was off and
00:20:50she was unhappy.
00:20:51And I saw her with my own eyes test strips of her deputy private secretary.
00:20:56I couldn't hear what was being said.
00:20:57I could just see from the body language between the two women.
00:21:00Guys, out. Stay to the side.
00:21:03Everyone turn around.
00:21:06After about two or three minutes, he just walked all the way through, rushed past us.
00:21:11No room, he turned. Oh, sorry.
00:21:15Of course, we were all like, what happened? Why did she rush out?
00:21:19Can we get out of the way?
00:21:20They felt security concerned.
00:21:25Kensington Palace says Meghan's visit is cut short because of fears over crowd control.
00:21:32And this local news footage captures the volume of people with her.
00:21:37I was told the reason she had become so annoyed was that there was all the branding for UN women
00:21:45in the market because they had supported this initiative with the local Fijian women.
00:21:51As I understand it, she hoped to get an ambassadorship for UN women.
00:21:57As I understand it, there was no position for her.
00:22:04The women had travelled for two or three days to get to this market to meet the Duchess of Sussex.
00:22:08And now she wasn't prepared to stay and speak to these women and congratulate them just because she had some
00:22:17beef with some branding at the market.
00:22:21Meghan's lawyers deny she left because of the organisation, saying she met with representatives from the UN women later on
00:22:29the tour.
00:22:40Meghan is now six months pregnant.
00:22:43She takes a break from royal engagements and meets up with friends to celebrate.
00:22:48My girlfriend surprised me with a really beautiful baby shower in New York.
00:22:53They're like, we're going to shower her with love and shower her baby and she's going to survive this.
00:22:59We're going to get through it with her.
00:23:01Meghan Markle hops on a private jet for this high profile Hollywood style baby shower.
00:23:07Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of swag if you attend.
00:23:12Cameras capture friends of Meghan's grave in the New York winter, including Amal Clooney and talk show host Gayle King,
00:23:19as they head to the hotel's exclusive $75,000 a night penthouse.
00:23:26Everything the royal family is not really, it's very ostentatious.
00:23:29This kind of show of wealth and cash and jet set lifestyle is just not something the royal family like
00:23:36to do.
00:23:37This photograph captures Meghan smiling with some of her happy guests, who enjoy an exclusive menu and gift bags worth
00:23:46eye-watering sums.
00:23:49Paid for by wealthy friends, some estimates have the final bill totalling half a million dollars.
00:23:57It showed that she really believed she was a celebrity and she could be flashy.
00:24:01It showed that she just didn't understand how the royal family worked.
00:24:05The great nuance of the British royal family is that you have to somehow pretend that you're just one of
00:24:10us and that you're on our level.
00:24:12Meghan just didn't really get this.
00:24:13You know, people don't want to see a flashy royal.
00:24:19The media really turned on her.
00:24:21This backlash is just the beginning.
00:24:26Meghan is devastated by these constant attacks.
00:24:29And it would lead her to contemplate the unthinkable.
00:24:33This toxic atmosphere that had been created to the point where she felt suicidal.
00:24:57Meghan Markle has achieved her ambition of becoming one of the biggest stars in the world.
00:25:03But just as she begins her royal career, the Duchess of Sussex is under increasing attack from social media and
00:25:11the press.
00:25:20We knew that Meghan and Harry were really struggling under the spotlight.
00:25:23They had a lot of negative attention.
00:25:27Meghan's team finds a way to fight back.
00:25:30In February 2019, People magazine publishes an article quoting anonymous friends of Meghan.
00:25:38There was this kind of defence of Meghan, how great she is, what a great friend she is, what a
00:25:42great employer she is.
00:25:45It was perfectly clear to me that her fingerprints were all over it.
00:25:49Five of Meghan's friends had given this interview to People magazine anonymously.
00:25:55But it was very much assumed that they wouldn't have done so without her say-so.
00:26:02Also, there was an element of survival as well, that she felt that the palace press office weren't doing the
00:26:08job correctly.
00:26:09They were saying it's best if we never complain, never explain.
00:26:14Meghan didn't see that.
00:26:16She's from a world in Hollywood where you try and manipulate the mass media.
00:26:23It doesn't work, as tabloid criticism only ramps up.
00:26:33For Meghan, it all becomes too much.
00:26:40I realised that it was all happening just because I was breathing.
00:26:47I just didn't want to be alive anymore.
00:26:56Meghan viewed herself as being under a microscope, being under tremendous pressure.
00:27:04The strain and the toxic atmosphere that had been created to the point where she felt suicidal.
00:27:12Meghan recognises she needs to address her suicidal feelings,
00:27:16but reveals she's frustrated by attitudes inside the royal household.
00:27:24I wanted to go somewhere to get help, but I wasn't allowed to.
00:27:29They were concerned about how that would look for the institution.
00:27:34They were no longer in tune with what the royal family expected from them.
00:27:53A year after getting married, Meghan makes exciting headlines around the world.
00:28:00Harry and Meghan's pride.
00:28:02The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcome a baby boy.
00:28:06Archie Mountbatten-Winsor is born at 5.26am.
00:28:11Before the press are informed, Archie and his parents are back home,
00:28:15away from the glare of the public.
00:28:19A convention had grown that a new mum was expected to stand on the steps of the hospital and show
00:28:26the world the new royal baby.
00:28:29It was clear that Meghan wanted to have no part in that kind of facade.
00:28:42The very thought of putting a woman on the steps of a hospital when only hours before they perhaps experienced
00:28:52one of the most traumatic experiences of their life in giving birth was, to Harry and Meghan, completely wrong.
00:28:59Whether that pressure was coming from the media, whether it was coming from the palace, Harry and Meghan didn't want
00:29:05to do that.
00:29:06MUSIC PLAYS
00:29:18Two days after giving birth, Harry and Meghan agreed to a photocall with baby Archie.
00:29:24Congratulations.
00:29:25I mean, you might just look into the camera here.
00:29:28I heard the photographs were taken of Archie, but Harry and Meghan didn't like that.
00:29:35Well, I'll tell you if you're serious, thanks.
00:29:39And that was their first experiences that were so bad that relationships were beginning to fall apart with other members
00:29:49of the royal family.
00:29:50The media had a very short honeymoon period with Meghan and Harry, and they were very irritated by their behaviour,
00:30:00by their focus on secrecy.
00:30:03You went down like a lead balloon.
00:30:07While feeling under relentless pressure and criticism, Meghan and her family embark on a royal tour.

00:30:26Throughout the tour in Africa, I was reporting on the news.
00:30:31We could tell that things weren't right.
00:30:34They weren't right within their team.
00:30:36Harry was very tense on a lot of that tour.
00:30:40Simultaneously, there was a team making a documentary that would air a few weeks later.
00:30:45One of the difficulties the documentary team had was securing access to an interview with Harry and Meghan.
00:30:53Now, this is because they were doing the Oprah interview, and they promised Oprah they wouldn't be filmed together.
00:30:59But the general public didn't know that at the time.
00:31:01Harry had given an interview to the documentary team when he was on the tour of Africa.
00:31:07Meghan left hers until the very last day.
00:31:12She decided to give an interview to Tom Bradby about her time in the royal family.
00:31:20I don't know what the impact on your physical and mental health, or all the pressure that you clearly feel
00:31:25under.
00:31:29Um, I would say, look, any woman when they're, especially when they're pregnant, you're really vulnerable.
00:31:37And so that was made really challenging.
00:31:41And then when you have a newborn, you know, you...
00:31:45Mm-hmm. It's a long time ago, but I remember, yeah.
00:31:47You know, and especially as a woman, it's really, it's a lot.
00:31:50So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed,
00:31:56it's, um...
00:32:00Yeah, well, I guess, and also thank you for asking, because not many people have asked if I'm okay.
00:32:05But it's, um...
00:32:07It's a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.
00:32:11And the answer is, would it be fair to say not really?
00:32:15Okay, since it's really been a struggle?
00:32:18Yes.
00:32:25It was the beginning of their victim narrative, and it was very much, obviously, public.
00:32:31And it was completely unprecedented.
00:32:33We'd never seen a member of the royal family whinge about being a member of the royal family before.
00:32:37This was so against protocol, you can imagine the firm were furious.
00:32:51After a difficult year, Meghan and her new family have had enough.
00:32:58What happens next changes the course of British history, exposing a rift between Meghan and Harry and the rest of
00:33:07the royal family.
00:33:08Yeah, that was incredible that the palace was putting out a line at all.
00:33:12It was an indication of how much anger there was behind the scenes.
00:33:35Meghan has risen from a Hollywood actress to one of the most famous women in the world.
00:33:41But it has come at a heavy cost.
00:33:45Unable to deal with the pressure of being a royal, Meghan and Harry release a statement.
00:33:55We intend to step back as senior members of the royal family,
00:34:00and work to become financially independent,
00:34:05while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen.
00:34:11Suddenly, it emerged that they were going to leave the UK.
00:34:15They wanted to do their own thing, in their own way, with their own ideas.
00:34:20They want half in, half out.
00:34:22They want to still represent the Queen and the Commonwealth,
00:34:25but they also want to make their own money.
00:34:29The world's media reacts to their astonishing exit announcement.
00:34:33Sources now say Queen Elizabeth is leading four-way talks with Prince Charles,
00:34:37William and Harry, pushing for a workable solution.
00:34:43Meghan just wants to go back to Hollywood.
00:34:45Meghan was probably thinking to herself, well, we should be doing this.
00:34:48Why not?
00:34:48We've got our children's future to think of.
00:34:50We've got our own livelihoods.
00:34:52Why not?
00:34:54As the royal family wheels from the statement,
00:34:58Meghan returns to Canada to be with Archie.
00:35:03With his wife out of the country,
00:35:05Harry is hauled into crisis talks with his family.
00:35:17The meeting, dubbed the Sandringham Summit,
00:35:20sees Meghan's future play out in the news headlines.
00:35:23Queen Elizabeth has ordered a high-level summit for today
00:35:27to hash out the next move for the royal family.
00:35:30It comes after Harry and Meghan's bombshell announcement
00:35:32that they were stepping back from their royal duties.
00:35:36Meghan was meant to be really involved in the Sandringham Summit.
00:35:39She wants to be there.
00:35:40She found it really frustrating she wasn't included
00:35:42because, to be fair, they were deciding her future.
00:35:46Imagine a conversation, a roundtable discussion
00:35:49about the future of your life
00:35:52when the stakes are this high
00:35:55and you as the mom and the wife
00:36:00and the target in many regards
00:36:03aren't invited to have a seat at the table.
00:36:06I think the royal family didn't want her there
00:36:08because they didn't trust her.
00:36:09They just didn't know how she'd manipulate the situation
00:36:12and they really wanted to get through to Harry one-on-one
00:36:14so they could talk some sense into him.
00:36:17After intense negotiations,
00:36:19dramatic news reports reveal
00:36:21the Queen refuses to let the couple be part-time royals.
00:36:25There's developing news coming from Buckingham Palace.
00:36:27The Duke and Duchess of Sussex will stop using their Royal Highness titles
00:36:31and won't receive public funds for royal duties.
00:36:34That's part of a deal Meghan and Harry just struck with the Queen.
00:36:39For Meghan and Harry, the only way is fully out.
00:36:50Megxit results in public outcry
00:36:53and Meghan's once soaring popularity plummets.
00:36:57I think that Megxit was when the British public really turned on them.
00:37:02I think the British public were insulted
00:37:04that he wanted to leave, basically,
00:37:06and took offence.
00:37:16Meghan's public royal role comes to an end
00:37:18two months after their Megxit announcement.
00:37:23Her final engagement
00:37:24brings her face-to-face with the royal family
00:37:27one last time.
00:37:29Commonwealth Day service,
00:37:30an annual engagement in the royal calendar
00:37:33that all senior royals always go to.
00:37:34Meghan was wearing this very striking green outfit
00:37:37with a cape.
00:37:38She looked utterly serene.
00:37:40She just wore this mask of serenity.
00:37:43I think it must have been really hard for Meghan, you know.
00:37:46Well, I would see the new conductors of Sussex
00:37:48being led to their seats.
00:37:50The final days of being part of the royal family,
00:37:52going to that Commonwealth event,
00:37:54knowing that you're going to leave very soon,
00:37:56but still managing to look elegant and smile in whatever way,
00:38:02that was really the actress coming out.
00:38:03That was one of her best roles.
00:38:07There were some little bits that were picked up by the cameras,
00:38:09weren't there?
00:38:10I mean, it was just little snippets,
00:38:11but it looked like there was no interaction
00:38:13between Harry and Meghan and William and Kate.
00:38:16I think we know that relations had completely disintegrated
00:38:19by that point,
00:38:20and it seemed quite frosty.
00:38:37Meghan and Meghan and her family settle in her home state of California,
00:38:43and buy a $15 million mansion in a town loved by celebrities.
00:38:57Montecito gives them the privacy that they want.
00:39:02It's where the elite of the elite go.
00:39:06Oprah Winfrey is currently there.
00:39:08Rob Lowe is there.
00:39:09It's the perfect place to network.
00:39:11If you want to keep up with the Joneses,
00:39:13then you live in Montecito.
00:39:16Having walked away from her role in the royal family,
00:39:20Meghan is in danger of falling out of the spotlight.
00:39:23But something is in the works
00:39:25that will see her take center stage once again.
00:39:34Were you silent or were you silenced?
00:39:38I just want to make it clear to everybody
00:39:40there is no subject that's off limits.
00:39:43CBS releases a trailer for a worldwide exclusive,
00:39:47a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey.
00:39:50I mean, most people go to Oprah
00:39:52if they really want to let something out.
00:39:55If you're a big star
00:39:56and you're with another big name,
00:39:58like a royal,
00:40:00you better talk to Oprah.
00:40:03A day after the trailer airs,
00:40:05damaging information relating to Meghan's time as a royal
00:40:09comes to light.
00:40:20We found out that the Sussex's
00:40:23communication secretary, Jason Knauf,
00:40:25had actually raised a complaint with HR
00:40:26about Meghan's bullying as he described it.
00:40:31A leaked email suggests that Meghan's treatment
00:40:34of her staff was so bad
00:40:36that the palace had to intervene.
00:40:39The palace reacted by launching a review
00:40:42into their own practices.
00:40:44It was quite serious.
00:40:46Meghan has denied bullying
00:40:48and, you know,
00:40:49I absolutely believe those women.
00:40:52I saw some of it with my own eyes.
00:40:56There were some very, very strong women
00:40:57who worked for Meghan
00:40:59who were broken by the end of it.
00:41:02There's a small number of staff
00:41:03who were working with Meghan and Harry for years
00:41:05right up until they left the UK.
00:41:09And I think they did have a tough time.
00:41:10Sussex Survivor Squad, yes,
00:41:12that's what they call themselves, these staff.
00:41:15Well, Meghan firmly believed
00:41:17that when those bullying emails came out
00:41:18just before the Oprah interview,
00:41:20they were released specifically to discredit her
00:41:23and Harry and, you know,
00:41:26counteract the narrative that was about to come.
00:41:28And I have to say,
00:41:29it seems pretty likely that was the case.
00:41:31I can't really blame her for thinking that.
00:41:32And I also can't really blame the royal family
00:41:35or former aides of the royal family
00:41:36wanting to do that
00:41:38because, you know,
00:41:39they were betraying themselves as victims.
00:41:41Of course, she said it was a massive conspiracy against her.
00:41:44Her very ferocious lawyer publicly went on the record
00:41:46and said this is all a load of rubbish.
00:41:48These claims do nothing to stop the transmission
00:41:50of what would become an infamous TV event.
00:42:07The Oprah interview airs during primetime.
00:42:11An estimated 17 million people in the U.S. alone
00:42:14watched Meghan emotionally recount her royal life.
00:42:19There has not been an agreement.
00:42:20You don't know what I'm going to ask.
00:42:23And there is no subject that's off-limits.
00:42:27The Oprah interview was, you know,
00:42:30pretty incendiary when it came to various different claims.
00:42:33These were very detrimental accusations.
00:42:38I remember writing down,
00:42:40whoa, that's a big accusation.
00:42:41And then another,
00:42:43oh, that one's really big as well.
00:42:44And then another.
00:42:46And we went on and on.
00:42:47And by the end of the show,
00:42:49it was jaw-hitting-floor moment.
00:42:53But one astonishing claim by Meghan
00:42:55towers above all others.
00:42:58In those months when I was pregnant,
00:43:00so we have in tandem the conversation of
00:43:03he won't be given security,
00:43:05he's not going to be given a title.
00:43:10And also concerns and conversations
00:43:13about how dark his skin might be when he's born.
00:43:19What about how dark your baby is going to be?
00:43:24Potentially, and what that would mean or look like.
00:43:26Ooh.
00:43:27Harry and Meghan claimed to vote for Winfrey
00:43:29that questions were asked by an unnamed member
00:43:32of the royal family about what colour Archie's skin would be.
00:43:36That was interpreted as potentially racist.
00:43:42So in the aftermath,
00:43:43the royal family released a statement saying,
00:43:45among other things,
00:43:46the famous, famous phrase,
00:43:47some recollections may vary.
00:43:51That was incredible at the time
00:43:53that the palace was putting out a line at all.
00:43:55They never react to these kind of things,
00:43:57but it was an indication of how strongly they felt about it
00:44:00and how much anger there was behind the scenes.
00:44:05For Meghan,
00:44:06the interview is a catalyst for much welcome change.
00:44:10It really improved in the short term,
00:44:12her status in America,
00:44:14because she became much more famous.
00:44:15People were so quick to say,
00:44:18yeah, well, the royal family probably are racist.
00:44:20Yeah, poor Meghan.
00:44:21And I think it was the beginning of her new chapter.
00:44:24I think it was casting her
00:44:26as a very, very famous person
00:44:28and as a victim.
00:44:30And those were the two things
00:44:31she needed to get future deals.
00:44:33So I think it was the turning point for her.
00:44:39In the wake of the Oprah interview,
00:44:41Meghan's popularity in the U.S. is booming.
00:44:44She is finally the A-lister
00:44:47that she has been craving all of her life.
00:44:49She has every opportunity
00:44:51that she could ever want at her fingertips.
00:44:54They got a huge Netflix deal.
00:44:56They got a huge Spotify deal.
00:44:57They got public speaking gigs.
00:44:59You know, they got everything that they wanted.
00:45:03Imagine being Meghan Markle.
00:45:05You have stepped away from the British royal family.
00:45:08You're saying, I don't need you.
00:45:10I've got Netflix money.
00:45:11I've got Spotify money.
00:45:12These were such huge wins for them.
00:45:23You've got to give it to Harry and Meghan
00:45:25that they did manage to raise a lot of money,
00:45:28capitalising on their worldwide fame,
00:45:31knowing there was a huge amount of interest in them
00:45:33and about them,
00:45:35and they were financially independent.
00:45:51Britain is celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee,
00:45:55her 70 years on the throne.
00:46:00Having spent the last year criticising the royal institution,
00:46:05Meghan returns to the UK to face the British public,
00:46:08attending a service at St Paul's Cathedral.
00:46:25The fact that she was booed on the steps of St Paul's Cathedral
00:46:29was probably everything that they were dreading.
00:46:32It's completely the opposite of how Meghan sees herself,
00:46:35which is this sort of adored icon.
00:46:37And I think it probably would have really upset her
00:46:39because they just don't understand why it is that they're not liked.
00:46:43And the thing about the British public is,
00:46:44once they turn against you,
00:46:46boy, do they let you know about it.
00:46:51Compare St Paul's Cathedral in 2022
00:46:54with Harry and Meghan's wedding in 2018.
00:47:00Just a few short years,
00:47:01and they've gone from being the most popular royals
00:47:04to many people in Britain, but not everybody,
00:47:06who were looked upon unfavourably
00:47:10for how they had spoken about the royal family
00:47:13since they had left.
00:47:28The ongoing fallout between Harry and Meghan
00:47:31and other members of the royal family
00:47:33is visible later in the year,
00:47:36after the nation receives devastating news.
00:47:40Buckingham Palace has just announced
00:47:43that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has died.
00:47:53When Meghan and Harry join William and Kate
00:47:56to meet a public in mourning...
00:48:00..the tension is palpable.
00:48:03It was clear as day
00:48:06that they absolutely couldn't stand
00:48:09the sight of each other, really.
00:48:12They could barely walk together.
00:48:14Try to face those hairpaces.
00:48:17The whole thing was absolutely fraud.
00:48:29After facing criticism in the UK,
00:48:32Meghan is about to find herself
00:48:34under fierce attack in America,
00:48:36including shocking revelations
00:48:38about a potential royal divorce.
00:48:42The fact that this remained in that piece
00:48:45and was printed
00:48:47is exceptionally, like, mind-blowing.
00:49:06Three months after the death of the Queen,
00:49:09Meghan and Harry released their debut
00:49:11Netflix documentary series
00:49:12to the world.
00:49:31This searingly honest and intimate series
00:49:35charts Meghan and Harry's controversial exit
00:49:38from the royal family.
00:49:40The documentary was very much their truth.
00:49:43It was not the truth.
00:49:45And that was the significance
00:49:46that people in Britain saw,
00:49:48but people around the world didn't.
00:49:51Like, I tried so hard.
00:49:57And that's the piece that's so triggering,
00:49:59because you go,
00:50:00and it still wasn't good enough.
00:50:03And you still don't fit in.
00:50:06It was a huge hit on Netflix.
00:50:09It was their biggest rated show.
00:50:11You know, everybody loved it,
00:50:12and everyone was talking about it.
00:50:14Meghan and Harry.
00:50:15Oh, watch on her.
00:50:18Riding high from the success
00:50:20of the Netflix series,
00:50:22Meghan's next project
00:50:23is a much-anticipated Spotify podcast series
00:50:27focusing on powerful women.
00:50:29This is a fantastic podcast
00:50:31called Archetypes,
00:50:32where she had Sweeney Williams on it,
00:50:34Mariah Carey was on it.
00:50:35And I think that's really important
00:50:38for people to remember
00:50:39that there might be this persona.
00:50:41And yes, the diva thing
00:50:43we can play into.
00:50:44I mean, it's not something
00:50:45that I connect to,
00:50:47but for you,
00:50:48it's been a huge part of your...
00:50:49You give us diva moments
00:50:50sometimes, Meghan.
00:50:51What kind of diva moments
00:50:52do I give you?
00:50:53Don't act like that.
00:50:59It was just boring.
00:51:02They weren't willing
00:51:03to give Spotify
00:51:04the juicy stuff
00:51:05that they really wanted.
00:51:07Spotify wanted
00:51:09dirty little secrets.
00:51:10They didn't want archetypes.
00:51:14It only lasted one season,
00:51:16and it felt like,
00:51:17actually, these deals
00:51:18were not going
00:51:19the way they wanted them to.
00:51:29Meghan continues
00:51:30to forge a new path.
00:51:32But three years
00:51:33after signing
00:51:34a £20 million deal
00:51:35with Spotify,
00:51:37damaging news
00:51:38breaks for Meghan.
00:51:40Spotify have ended
00:51:42its lucrative deal
00:51:43with the Duke
00:51:44and Duchess of Sussex
00:51:45for the couple
00:51:46to produce podcasts.
00:51:48A joint statement
00:51:49from Harry and Meghan
00:51:51and the streaming giants
00:51:52said they had mutually agreed
00:51:54to part their ways.
00:51:58In three years,
00:52:00Meghan has only produced
00:52:0112 episodes of Archetypes.
00:52:05A former Spotify executive
00:52:07uses his own podcast
00:52:09to tell the world
00:52:10what he really thought
00:52:11of Meghan and Harry.
00:52:12I wish I had been involved
00:52:14in the Meghan and Harry
00:52:15leave Spotify negotiation.
00:52:17The Grifters.
00:52:18That's the podcast
00:52:19we should have launched
00:52:20with them.
00:52:21I gotta get drunk
00:52:22one night
00:52:23and tell the story
00:52:23of the Zoom
00:52:24I had with Harry
00:52:25to try to help him
00:52:25with a podcast idea.
00:52:30The collapse
00:52:31of her Spotify deal
00:52:32is a dent
00:52:33in Meghan's ambition
00:52:35of building
00:52:35a media empire.
00:52:37Obviously,
00:52:37she's being paid
00:52:38very, very well.
00:52:39But if whatever
00:52:40she's doing
00:52:40doesn't make the numbers,
00:52:42then the businessmen
00:52:43are going,
00:52:44well, this doesn't add up.
00:52:45Criticism continues
00:52:46is to build
00:52:47around Meghan's
00:52:48new career path.
00:52:52She finds herself
00:52:53under attack.
00:52:54We want privacy!
00:52:56We just want to be
00:52:57normal people.
00:52:58All this attention
00:52:58is so hard.
00:52:59Isn't it true, sir,
00:53:00that your questionable wife
00:53:01has her own TV show
00:53:02and hangs out with celebrities
00:53:03and does fashion magazines?
00:53:05What are you suggesting?
00:53:05Babe, time to do
00:53:07our daily
00:53:08$250,000
00:53:10sponsored Instagram post
00:53:12for Del Taco.
00:53:13They want it both ways.
00:53:15You know, you can't be
00:53:16these people
00:53:17were so mean to us,
00:53:18poor us,
00:53:18and we don't want
00:53:19all this attention
00:53:20and then let me write a book
00:53:22about how much
00:53:22we don't want attention.
00:53:38Then, a magazine
00:53:40is published
00:53:40threatening to undo
00:53:42Meghan's public standing.
00:53:46Vanity Fair's
00:53:47American Hustle piece
00:53:48earthquake in Montecito.
00:53:51It is so damaging
00:53:52to Harry and Meghan's
00:53:54reputation.
00:53:55More bully allegations.
00:54:00Pages and pages
00:54:02of critical insight.
00:54:07The article,
00:54:08in what is known
00:54:09as America's Hollywood Bible,
00:54:11gives an insight
00:54:12into the failings
00:54:13of Meghan
00:54:13as a company boss.
00:54:15You don't want
00:54:16that kind of cover story
00:54:17on Vanity Fair
00:54:18about you being,
00:54:20like, not up
00:54:21to the mark
00:54:22because that's
00:54:22the industry saying,
00:54:25what's up here?
00:54:27It also unearths
00:54:28a rumor
00:54:29that makes
00:54:30some extraordinary
00:54:31allegations.
00:54:32The biggest takeaway
00:54:34from the Vanity Fair
00:54:35piece
00:54:36was this rumor
00:54:38that somebody
00:54:39from Meghan's team
00:54:40had been talking
00:54:42about a post-divorce
00:54:43Prince Harry book.
00:54:46Vanity Fair
00:54:46has lawyers
00:54:47that have to comb
00:54:48through every single word.
00:54:50The fact that this
00:54:51remained in that piece
00:54:53and was printed
00:54:54is exceptionally,
00:54:56like, mind-blowing.
00:55:01And things get worse
00:55:04as heartbreaking news
00:55:06from the other side
00:55:07of the world
00:55:08lays bare the shocking
00:55:09divide between Meghan
00:55:11and her father.
00:55:14Meghan's reaction
00:55:15to her father's
00:55:16hospitalization
00:55:17was shocking,
00:55:18mostly because it was
00:55:19just so cold
00:55:19and calculating.
00:55:36Meghan
00:55:37is one of the most
00:55:38famous women
00:55:39in the world.
00:55:40And after appearing
00:55:42side-by-side
00:55:43with Harry
00:55:43for seven years,
00:55:45she now
00:55:46branches out
00:55:47alone,
00:55:49reinventing herself
00:55:50as a lifestyle mogul.
00:55:53Kat's out of the bag.
00:55:54I'm shocked
00:55:55we've kept this
00:55:55a secret for so long.
00:55:56And this is the moment.
00:55:57And it's called
00:55:58As Ever.
00:55:59She launches
00:56:00luxury goods brand
00:56:01As Ever.
00:56:03She's creating
00:56:04her own jams,
00:56:05her own wines,
00:56:07her own teas.
00:56:08It also feels
00:56:09like they've tried
00:56:10to blend
00:56:10the royal family
00:56:11into who she is.
00:56:13It feels like
00:56:14it's quite royal.
00:56:15It feels like
00:56:16it's emulating
00:56:17from the past.
00:56:18People are still
00:56:18buying into
00:56:19sort of the royal
00:56:20Meghan Markle.
00:56:21As Ever,
00:56:22the brand
00:56:23has done well
00:56:24and I think
00:56:26that she could
00:56:26possibly do
00:56:27something with that.
00:56:28You know,
00:56:29if you do it right,
00:56:30you can make
00:56:30a lot of money.
00:56:31And I think
00:56:31something like
00:56:32the As Ever wine
00:56:33could actually be
00:56:34her sort of
00:56:34golden chariot.
00:56:36It could be
00:56:36the one thing
00:56:37that actually
00:56:37does really well
00:56:38for her.
00:56:40Meghan then shows
00:56:41off her culinary
00:56:41skills on a new
00:56:43Netflix show.
00:56:47I think with love,
00:56:48Meghan,
00:56:49she's showing you
00:56:49her lifestyle
00:56:50and she's hoping
00:56:51that you will
00:56:52want to emulate that.
00:56:55This,
00:56:55we're just going
00:56:56to put into
00:56:56a different bag.
00:57:01I watched
00:57:02and engaged
00:57:03and there is
00:57:05something appealing
00:57:06about her,
00:57:06but is it just
00:57:07her beauty?
00:57:08Is it just
00:57:09how chic she is?
00:57:10Is it how
00:57:10perfect she is?
00:57:12And that can only
00:57:13entice people
00:57:14so much.
00:57:15Her whole brand
00:57:17is staked
00:57:18and sold
00:57:19on authenticity
00:57:21and being the
00:57:22true Meghan,
00:57:22this is her
00:57:23true self.
00:57:24Rubbish!
00:57:25It's all
00:57:26a carefully
00:57:26curated
00:57:27artifice.
00:57:30Megan finds
00:57:31her reinvention
00:57:32is divisive.
00:57:33She has loyal
00:57:35supporters,
00:57:35but also many
00:57:37enjoy mocking
00:57:38her.
00:57:38I like to put
00:57:40a beautiful
00:57:40little label
00:57:40on it.
00:57:41It's so darling.
00:57:43So a few things
00:57:44I like to do
00:57:44to really elevate
00:57:46the flavor.
00:57:47Ow!
00:57:49The hard-fought
00:57:51freedom she gained
00:57:52from the royal family
00:57:53has given her
00:57:54the ability
00:57:54to say,
00:57:55do,
00:57:56and post
00:57:57what she wants.
00:57:58She's back
00:57:58on social media
00:57:59and she doesn't
00:58:00realize that
00:58:00everything she says
00:58:01and does now
00:58:02thanks to her
00:58:03proximity to the
00:58:04British royal family
00:58:04is newsworthy
00:58:06and has consequences.
00:58:08The twerking video
00:58:09was so weird.
00:58:10When the song
00:58:11come on,
00:58:12let me see you
00:58:13get gone.
00:58:14Baby mama,
00:58:15this song, baby...
00:58:16This video
00:58:16was highly
00:58:17choreographed.
00:58:26If she
00:58:27it just doesn't
00:58:27fit with her
00:58:28curated image.
00:58:29I said,
00:58:29I'm pregnant,
00:58:30pregnant,
00:58:31get the child
00:58:31support and
00:58:32pay my rent,
00:58:33pay my rent,
00:58:33your opinion
00:58:34is irrelevant,
00:58:35irrelevant.
00:58:35It was
00:58:37such
00:58:37a bizarre
00:58:39misjudgment.
00:58:40The more she does,
00:58:41the worse it seems
00:58:42to get.
00:58:54The Paris
00:58:55Instagram reel,
00:58:57she is filming
00:58:58kind of through
00:58:59the window
00:59:00a night scene,
00:59:01puts her feet up
00:59:02on the chauffeur-driven
00:59:03car.
00:59:05It's near
00:59:06the Pond d'Almao
00:59:08where her
00:59:09mother-in-law
00:59:10died.
00:59:12It's a classic
00:59:13case of her
00:59:13just not thinking.
00:59:14A night scene,
00:59:15Paris.
00:59:16Hang on a sec,
00:59:18this is not a good
00:59:18idea.
00:59:24For someone
00:59:25who prided herself
00:59:27on being so
00:59:28of the moment
00:59:29and always getting
00:59:30things right,
00:59:30she could never
00:59:31quite read the room,
00:59:32not until it was
00:59:33too late.
00:59:45in the lead-up
00:59:46to Christmas,
00:59:49With Love,
00:59:50Meghan returns
00:59:51to Netflix
00:59:52with a glossy
00:59:53and stylish
00:59:54holiday special.
00:59:55It's a sort of
00:59:56sequence of vignettes
00:59:58of Meghan
00:59:59preparing for her
01:00:00Christmas holidays.
01:00:02During a sweet
01:00:03kitchen scene,
01:00:04Prince Harry
01:00:05makes a fun
01:00:05guest appearance.
01:00:11Meghan and Harry
01:00:12have faced a
01:00:13year of
01:00:14speculation
01:00:14about their
01:00:15marriage,
01:00:16and then,
01:00:16in the holiday
01:00:17special,
01:00:18they're kissing
01:00:18on the lips,
01:00:19they're bantering,
01:00:21she's saying
01:00:22what a good
01:00:23son-in-law he is.
01:00:24Thank you for
01:00:25coming.
01:00:26So you see
01:00:26a rebuttal
01:00:27of those rumours.
01:00:29Throughout
01:00:29this special,
01:00:30there is one
01:00:31recurring theme.
01:00:32It is delicious.
01:00:33Family.
01:00:34I'm not so sure
01:00:35it's as good
01:00:35as your mum's,
01:00:36but it's certainly
01:00:36close.
01:00:37Wow.
01:00:39What?
01:00:40There's a lot
01:00:41of talk
01:00:41of her own
01:00:41mother,
01:00:42her mother's
01:00:43famous gumbo
01:00:44recipe.
01:00:45She, of course,
01:00:46is portraying
01:00:47herself as the
01:00:47perfect mother,
01:00:48but there's just
01:00:49no reference
01:00:50at all to her
01:00:51father.
01:00:51He's been
01:00:51completely erased.
01:00:53Even if she's
01:00:53fallen out with
01:00:54him, which of
01:00:54course she has,
01:00:55she might have
01:00:56just referenced
01:00:57my dad used
01:00:58to dress up
01:00:59as Santa,
01:01:00anything like
01:01:01that.
01:01:01I think it
01:01:02just tells us
01:01:02that Meghan
01:01:03is really
01:01:05savage when
01:01:06she cuts
01:01:07people out.
01:01:07If she cuts
01:01:08you out of
01:01:08her life,
01:01:09Meghan really
01:01:09means it.
01:01:17The same
01:01:18day as the
01:01:18release of
01:01:19Meghan's
01:01:20holiday special,
01:01:21some shocking
01:01:22news breaks.
01:01:24Meghan Markle's
01:01:25dad, Thomas,
01:01:26has gone into
01:01:26intensive care
01:01:28after being
01:01:29rushed to
01:01:30hospital for
01:01:30emergency surgery
01:01:32near his home
01:01:34in the Philippines.
01:01:35He's had many
01:01:36years of health
01:01:37issues.
01:01:37He had to have
01:01:38a stent fitted
01:01:39due to a blood
01:01:40clot in his
01:01:41heart.
01:01:42And now what's
01:01:43happened is that
01:01:44he's had another
01:01:44blood clot,
01:01:45this time in his
01:01:45leg, and he
01:01:47had to have the
01:01:48leg amputated.
01:01:50This image shows
01:01:51it weak-looking
01:01:52Thomas and a
01:01:54Daily Mail
01:01:54journalist, an
01:01:55alleged close
01:01:56friend, who he
01:01:57reportedly invited
01:01:58to the hospital.
01:01:59She films a
01:02:00video of a
01:02:02frail-looking
01:02:03Thomas.
01:02:03Can I say
01:02:04anything to
01:02:04all the people
01:02:05that's sending
01:02:05you love and
01:02:06well-wishers from
01:02:06around the
01:02:07world?
01:02:10Thank you
01:02:10for all your
01:02:11support, and
01:02:13love you during
01:02:14an absolute
01:02:14time.
01:02:15This photo
01:02:16shows Thomas
01:02:17bravely
01:02:17recovering from
01:02:18life-changing
01:02:19surgery, and
01:02:20he reportedly
01:02:21enacts a plea
01:02:22from his
01:02:23bedside.
01:02:26Thomas
01:02:27Markle said
01:02:27that what he
01:02:28really hoped
01:02:28was that he
01:02:29could see
01:02:30Megan before
01:02:31he dies, so
01:02:32he said quite
01:02:33openly, just
01:02:33come and see
01:02:34me, Megan,
01:02:35please come
01:02:35and see me.
01:02:38Megan's team
01:02:38claims she
01:02:39tries to
01:02:39contact her
01:02:40father, but
01:02:41after a week,
01:02:42he reportedly
01:02:43still hasn't
01:02:43heard from
01:02:44her.
01:02:46Megan tried
01:02:47calling and
01:02:48emailing her
01:02:48father, but
01:02:49she doesn't
01:02:50have his
01:02:50number, and
01:02:50Thomas
01:02:51doesn't use
01:02:52email.
01:02:53with fears
01:02:54over the
01:02:54Daily Mail
01:02:54journalist by
01:02:55his bedside,
01:02:57Megan reportedly
01:02:57takes action.
01:03:05Allegedly, Thomas
01:03:07was lying in
01:03:07bed and was
01:03:08told by the
01:03:08manager of the
01:03:09hospital that
01:03:10a representative
01:03:11from the U.S.
01:03:12embassy wanted
01:03:13to speak to
01:03:14him, and
01:03:16then he had
01:03:16to sign a few
01:03:17waivers, waiving
01:03:18his right to
01:03:19privacy, and
01:03:20then I think a
01:03:21couple of days
01:03:21later, in
01:03:23walks in a
01:03:24member of the
01:03:24U.S.
01:03:25embassy, and
01:03:26reportedly, he
01:03:27films an
01:03:28exchange between
01:03:29him and Tom, in
01:03:30which he gives
01:03:30Tom a letter, and
01:03:31it's all recorded.
01:03:34It was
01:03:35obviously for
01:03:35Megan.
01:03:36I think the
01:03:37filming of the
01:03:37handover shows
01:03:38such a level of
01:03:39distrust from
01:03:40Megan, and
01:03:41really, to be
01:03:41served a letter
01:03:42in that way
01:03:44feels wrong to
01:03:46me.
01:03:47It's hugely
01:03:48ironic, really,
01:03:49that Megan's got
01:03:50this obsession
01:03:50about privacy
01:03:51privacy, but
01:03:51then at the
01:03:52same time, the
01:03:53Sussex PR
01:03:54operation also
01:03:55want to get
01:03:55messages out
01:03:56there, and
01:03:56they want to
01:03:57put Megan in
01:03:58the best
01:03:58light.
01:03:59I think the
01:04:00whole fallout
01:04:00with her dad,
01:04:01Thomas Markle,
01:04:02is very sad.
01:04:05Wouldn't we be
01:04:06all looking at
01:04:07Megan Markle in
01:04:08a completely
01:04:09different way if
01:04:09she would have
01:04:09jumped on a
01:04:10plane to be
01:04:10with her
01:04:11father?
01:04:13Like, we
01:04:13would have been
01:04:14like, what an
01:04:15incredible human.
01:04:17Just take care of
01:04:17your dad.
01:04:18I mean, especially
01:04:19knowing how much
01:04:20this band has
01:04:21sacrificed to put
01:04:22you in the
01:04:22position you're
01:04:23in.
01:04:25Ready?
01:04:27Six, five.
01:04:30The world now
01:04:32waits for Megan's
01:04:32next move, and
01:04:34wonders what the
01:04:35future looks like
01:04:36for her, and if
01:04:37it includes those
01:04:38she once called
01:04:39family.
01:04:41I don't think the
01:04:42royal family will
01:04:43ever reconcile
01:04:44with her.
01:04:46Harry's getting
01:04:46there, but the
01:04:48progress is
01:04:48incredibly slow.
01:04:50He speaks to his
01:04:51father once every
01:04:51month on a video
01:04:53link, but with
01:04:54Megan, there's
01:04:55just no chance.
01:04:57Harry does
01:04:58definitely want to
01:04:58bring his children
01:04:59back to the UK.
01:05:00He wants to show
01:05:00them where he grew
01:05:01up.
01:05:01He wants them to
01:05:02meet his family,
01:05:02his father in
01:05:03particular.
01:05:05Megan doesn't
01:05:05have that same
01:05:07link.
01:05:07I wouldn't be
01:05:08surprised if she
01:05:09never returns to
01:05:10the UK.
01:05:15Megan's journey
01:05:16has been one of
01:05:17perseverance,
01:05:19ambition, and
01:05:20reinvention.
01:05:21Megan has come
01:05:22from being the
01:05:23daughter of a
01:05:24Hollywood lighting
01:05:25man who was a
01:05:26jobbing actress, who
01:05:28went on to then
01:05:28become a superstar
01:05:30by marrying a
01:05:31royal.
01:05:33You know, it's a
01:05:34fantastic trajectory,
01:05:35and actually, she's
01:05:37thriving.
01:05:38She has never
01:05:39given up.
01:05:40Some things have
01:05:42gone really well,
01:05:43some things have
01:05:44gone really badly.
01:05:46But she's really
01:05:48managing to capitalize
01:05:50on her profile.
01:05:51Megan, Harry!
01:05:53Is she this
01:05:54ambitious, fierce
01:05:56actress in the
01:05:58tight body-con
01:06:00dresses, making
01:06:01eye contact with
01:06:02every photographer on
01:06:03the red carpet, who
01:06:05wants to take over
01:06:06the world?
01:06:07Megan, Harry!
01:06:08Megan, Harry!
01:06:08Is it the shy woman
01:06:10touching every baby
01:06:12and dog down, you
01:06:14know, a royal
01:06:15engagement line, who
01:06:16wants to change the
01:06:17world and make it a
01:06:18better place?
01:06:19No, this is just the
01:06:20beginning of that
01:06:21discovery.
01:06:21The thing that's
01:06:22compelling is that we
01:06:24can't predict what
01:06:26Megan's going to do
01:06:27next.
01:06:35It was a shocking
01:06:36fall from grace for
01:06:37someone, no stranger to
01:06:39controversy.
01:06:40Fergie and the fake
01:06:41shake scandal is brand
01:06:42new next Saturday at
01:06:439.20.
01:06:44And after losing his
01:06:45titles, what next for the
01:06:46former Duke of York in
01:06:48five days that brought
01:06:49down Prince Andrew
01:06:50stream now on five
01:06:51next tonight, Michael
01:06:53Jackson cause of death.
