00:00:10I can't believe Naked and Afraid was crazy enough to ask me to come back.
00:00:15I'm Ernie, and I'm the biggest true fan of Naked and Afraid.
00:00:20Every season, every episode.
00:00:23You know, people use the word super fan over and over again.
00:00:25I'm a true fan.
00:00:26I have bags. I have all kinds of memorabilia that I've collected.
00:00:31Like, I went on the Naked and Afraid cruise to meet a bunch of my heroes.
00:00:35So, yeah, I'm a big, huge fan.
00:00:38I did a 14-day fan challenge in the Yucatan of Mexico.
00:00:42I hate this place.
00:00:44I was baptized under fire.
00:00:46We did it.
00:00:46Oh, my God.
00:00:47We did it.
00:00:49I'm here to do a 21 in Botswana, Africa.
00:00:54Woo-hoo!
00:00:55Can you believe it?
00:00:59I'm just not sure anybody can survive here for 21 days.
00:01:04Oh, my God.
00:01:06Two strangers.
00:01:08Ha!
00:01:09Go, go, go, go, go!
00:01:11No food.
00:01:12Ah!
00:01:13Ah!
00:01:16No water.
00:01:18Ah!
00:01:1921 days.
00:01:21Don't tell.
00:01:21Ah!
00:01:23Die first.
00:01:24Naked and Afraid.
00:01:29Damn, this is pretty.
00:01:31You're gonna kick my ass, aren't you, Africa?
00:01:34I've always wanted to be here.
00:01:36You see the tall grass, the wreath.
00:01:39You see all the birds flying around.
00:01:41You hear the whippos out.
00:01:44This place is like a heartbeat.
00:01:47There's tons of danger out here.
00:01:50There's a jaguar, the lion, the croc.
00:01:53This is so overwhelming.
00:01:55And the water is forever.
00:01:58It's a sea of green.
00:02:00And instead of it being like an ash or a field, it's water.
00:02:07Located in southern Africa, Botswana's Okavango Delta is a vast inland wetland, where winter
00:02:14flooding from the Okavango River slowly fills the grassland, creating a seasonal habitat for
00:02:20Africa's large populations of migrating animals, including lions, elephants, and hippopotamuses,
00:02:29whose two-ton frame and four-foot gaping mouths kill 500 humans each year.
00:02:35As winter weather brings floodwaters to the region, it also offsets the searing sun with
00:02:41near freezing nights and sudden wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour.
00:02:48Africa is going to test me beyond anything I already know.
00:02:52It's going to push me beyond my limits, for sure.
00:02:56Super intimidating, but as much as I'm afraid in Africa, I'm terrified of what my partner might be here.
00:03:05I can definitely feel the nerves, man.
00:03:07Partnership dynamics can be volatile.
00:03:11Are you happy, Ernie?
00:03:12My partner from the fan challenge, Mandy, she was a surprising breath of fresh air.
00:03:18I am super appreciative of you making shoes.
00:03:20We complimented each other, we did things for each other.
00:03:23She is a rock star.
00:03:27Getting closer.
00:03:31The one thing you can't control is your partner, and I think once I meet my partner,
00:03:37that I'll feel so much more relaxed, and hopefully we get along.
00:03:43The moment of truth.
00:03:45I'm super apprehensive.
00:03:47I tell this to people all the time, because everyone always asks.
00:03:51You can practice fire, you can practice shelter, you can practice every weakness you have and every
00:03:55strength you can sharpen, but you can never be in control of your partner.
00:04:02Man, if I end up with some lazy, self-loathing, negative, egotistical beast, I'm just going to lose my .
00:04:22All right, all right, I feel better now.
00:04:25Are you kidding me?
00:04:26Oh, my God, you've got to be kidding me.
00:04:32Oh, this looks so much better.
00:04:36We're going to do this again.
00:04:37Oh, my gosh.
00:04:44I'm about to do 21 days in Botswana.
00:04:50This is the scaredest I've ever been, probably in my entire life, if I'm being honest.
00:04:57Absolutely more scared than I was last time.
00:05:01My name's Mandy, and I just finished a 14-day challenge.
00:05:05Ah, bats.
00:05:06Uh-oh.
00:05:07I knew it was going to be hard, but I couldn't possibly fathom how hard.
00:05:12A lizard.
00:05:14We tried to eat.
00:05:17But unfortunately, we were not successful.
00:05:21So during the whole 14 days, we only ate cactus.
00:05:24So I knew right away I needed to learn how to trap, set traps, snares, things like that.
00:05:32I had opportunity between the two challenges to really focus on the things I wasn't good at.
00:05:38And now it's my time to prove that I am good at these things.
00:05:50Oh, my God, you've got to be kidding me.
00:05:55The last person I expected.
00:05:57The last person.
00:05:58The best person.
00:05:59The best.
00:06:00This has never happened.
00:06:01Two fans coming in together for 21.
00:06:04This has never happened.
00:06:04I don't think they've ever had.
00:06:07Are you kidding me?
00:06:09We're so lucky to be first in Naked and Afraid history to go from a fan to a 21 together.
00:06:15Hey, we're not two fans trying to figure it out this time.
00:06:19I don't have an opportunity to tap.
00:06:22Wow.
00:06:23I've been a part of this community for years.
00:06:25I will catch all kinds of .
00:06:27Not only from my family, but from other fans.
00:06:30I even made the comment, someone asked me, who'd be your perfect partner?
00:06:33And I was like, okay, well, imagine Mandy, and then branch out from there.
00:06:36Maybe with some more skill set, but hey, Mandy 2.0 is here.
00:06:39All right, awesome.
00:06:40Mandy 2.0 is here.
00:06:41I can't see how we can fail.
00:06:43Oh, let's get to it.
00:06:44Okay.
00:06:45We figured out through some of the hardest times in our lives how to get through 14.
00:06:48We just got to get through one week.
00:06:49It's that last week that's going to make the difference.
00:06:51It's the one that's going to bite.
00:06:52We got a little bit more than our supplies.
00:06:55Makoro, I believe, is the African canoe name.
00:06:59But that means we're not staying here.
00:07:02You know, normally when they give you extra , it's-
00:07:04We got to use it.
00:07:05Traditionally dug out from the trunk of a large tree,
00:07:08a Makoro is a canoe used for navigating the channels and flooded plains of Botswana's Okavango Delta.
00:07:15Dude, this is pretty badass.
00:07:18What you got?
00:07:19What you got?
00:07:19Yeah.
00:07:20I have my machete.
00:07:22I like it.
00:07:24I've got a very cool fishing kit here.
00:07:27So we are eating this time.
00:07:28Yeah, see, we're-
00:07:29We're eating.
00:07:29We're eating.
00:07:30In addition to their survival items, Mandy and Ernie have been given a fire starter,
00:07:34a pot, and a map of the delta.
00:07:37Where are we going?
00:07:38Ah, voila.
00:07:39Okay, so we're here.
00:07:40Yeah.
00:07:40And we have-
00:07:42Ah, the tree of life.
00:07:43So we're going to have to canoe there today.
00:07:46It's going to be a tough push out.
00:07:48Yeah.
00:07:49We need to get started like yesterday.
00:07:50Yeah, let's get on the move.
00:07:51Let's do it.
00:07:52Let's do it.
00:07:53To reach their island, Mandy and Ernie must navigate their Makoro 2.1 miles north,
00:07:59through the flood basin, where Nile crocodiles hide amongst the papyrus reeds.
00:08:04All right, buddy.
00:08:06All right.
00:08:07Off we go.
00:08:08There we go.
00:08:09Go.
00:08:11We're going.
00:08:15I'm going to try standing, just because I feel like I've got more leverage that way.
00:08:20Yeah.
00:08:21You might want to be careful.
00:08:22Yeah.
00:08:22You land in this water.
00:08:24You got crocs, and you got- we got snakes, and we got all kinds of we don't know that's
00:08:28floating
00:08:28in here.
00:08:30Ah!
00:08:30There's a spider.
00:08:32Okay.
00:08:32Ah!
00:08:33It's so big.
00:08:34There are spiders everywhere.
00:08:37I did not take that into consideration.
00:08:40On the water?
00:08:41On the water.
00:08:42Orb weaver.
00:08:44These spiders are not great.
00:08:48I don't mind getting filthy.
00:08:50I don't mind trucking through thorns.
00:08:53Sorry, but when it comes to bugs and spiders-
00:08:56Oh, my God.
00:08:57Hang in there.
00:08:58Something's crawling on me.
00:08:59I scream.
00:09:02And I can't control it, so it's something that I'm going to try to work on, because they're
00:09:05everywhere.
00:09:08Oh, oh my God.
00:09:09It's okay, it's okay, it's okay.
00:09:11I thought you were going to tip.
00:09:12I got it.
00:09:12I got it.
00:09:13You're brave.
00:09:13That spiderweb was right in your face.
00:09:16Yeah.
00:09:20Ah.
00:09:21Whew.
00:09:23Man, I'm telling you what, my shoulders.
00:09:25Yeah.
00:09:26Are feeling it.
00:09:26It's a workout.
00:09:27No doubt about that.
00:09:28It is.
00:09:28It is.
00:09:29Make a hard.
00:09:31There we go.
00:09:32There we go.
00:09:33See the right?
00:09:35The tree.
00:09:36You think that's it?
00:09:37I think that's the right one.
00:09:38Yeah, that's gotta be it.
00:09:39I don't see any of the tree that kind of looks like that, you know?
00:09:41It said that way?
00:09:43Yeah.
00:09:43Yeah, let's do it.
00:09:47That final push for the day.
00:09:49Yeah.
00:09:51Oh, it's definitely getting more shallow.
00:09:53Oh yeah, I just hit the bottom.
00:09:54You want to go ahead and get out here?
00:09:56Yep.
00:09:57You want me to get out first?
00:09:58Yeah, yeah.
00:10:00Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:00It's very shallow.
00:10:01We're good.
00:10:02The endorphins are rolling.
00:10:04I'm super excited, but I can't neglect the fact that the hard stuff's coming.
00:10:09Hey, look, elephant .
00:10:10What, what?
00:10:11Oh, you know what that means.
00:10:13Yeah.
00:10:14It could be close by.
00:10:15Yeah.
00:10:17Did you find a spot to tie it off on?
00:10:19Yeah.
00:10:20We have the most dangerous predators around us, and they're nocturnal.
00:10:24That's a different type of skin.
00:10:26That's not elephant.
00:10:26Oh, no, no, that's a.
00:10:27What is that, you think?
00:10:28That's a, that could be a cat.
00:10:30We are definitely in their territory.
00:10:33It is imperative that we get that boma done as soon as possible.
00:10:40So we need coverage.
00:10:42Um, so we need to be in the trees.
00:10:44There's like that big shady looking tree over there.
00:10:46Yeah, exactly.
00:10:47Yeah, exactly.
00:10:47Yeah.
00:10:47Let's see what we're working with at least.
00:10:49Exactly.
00:10:53Let's take a look over here.
00:10:54Yeah.
00:10:55Look at this.
00:10:56This is some nice shelter.
00:10:57Do you think that this would be good?
00:10:59And like, so what we could do is build our, like, this could be our entryway.
00:11:04We could put the fire here.
00:11:05There's enough clearance overhead.
00:11:06I don't see any ants.
00:11:08I don't see any spiders coming above.
00:11:10All right.
00:11:11All right.
00:11:11Home.
00:11:1221 days.
00:11:12Got it.
00:11:13Here in Botswana this time of year, we only get about 11 hours of daylight.
00:11:16And we are well surpassed the halfway point.
00:11:19So I think we're going to use our strength.
00:11:21While you're building, I'm starting that fire.
00:11:23And then after that, I'll start clearing out.
00:11:24Okay.
00:11:26Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:11:28There is something on your cheek, buddy.
00:11:30Oh, it's a leash.
00:11:33Okay, I'm just going to pull it.
00:11:35Okay, if you rub the head of it.
00:11:38The head?
00:11:38Where's the head?
00:11:39Is that the head?
00:11:39Well, the part that's stuck.
00:11:40They're both stuck.
00:11:42Both?
00:11:42Yes.
00:11:43It's two?
00:11:43Yeah, rip it off.
00:11:45Oh, my God.
00:11:47Where'd it go?
00:11:50Oh, man, that was funny.
00:11:53You're welcome.
00:11:54You're welcome.
00:11:54Now I don't know where I threw the damn thing.
00:11:57So slimy.
00:12:04The boma is, it's absolutely necessary.
00:12:08It's for our protection.
00:12:10Africa comes alive at night.
00:12:12And that's why it's important we're on the clock.
00:12:15Ernie and Mandy are surrounding their camp with a six-foot-tall boma built with layers of
00:12:20stacked branches and filled in with thorny palm leaves for protection from nighttime predators.
00:12:26A lot of these have thorns in them.
00:12:30The palms have, like, these gargantuan thorns on them, too.
00:12:34So, yeah, I'm going to use that to try to cover it.
00:12:40Just getting a little bit more tender.
00:12:43So that way, when it's go time, we're good.
00:12:50I got it started within seconds.
00:12:53All right.
00:12:56Okay.
00:12:57All right.
00:12:57I'm going to take a break from this, and I'm going to help you because our daylight is going to
00:13:01go quickly.
00:13:05All right.
00:13:08I wish it was just a little thicker.
00:13:11I feel like there's still a lot to fill up.
00:13:13Not a lot of time.
00:13:17Want to use this for our door?
00:13:20Yeah.
00:13:21Yeah, that's a great idea.
00:13:22I mean, it's bushy enough.
00:13:24Yeah.
00:13:25All right.
00:13:26So we're done for the night?
00:13:28Yes.
00:13:28We'll see what works tonight, and then we'll fill in those gaps tomorrow.
00:13:33Day one.
00:13:35We're on lockdown for the night.
00:13:37We've got our fire.
00:13:38We've got our boma.
00:13:40Hanging out with my, used to be my jungle friend.
00:13:44Now he's my delta dude.
00:13:46I'm a little scared of what's going to come out later.
00:13:49Yeah.
00:13:50Tonight's going to be an experiment.
00:13:52Yeah, it is.
00:13:53We're going to see how that goes.
00:13:54Hmm.
00:13:55It's about to be a party.
00:13:57Could be.
00:13:58It could be.
00:14:07That was an elephant.
00:14:09That's big time .
00:14:10That was an elephant.
00:14:13It's so early.
00:14:14Yeah.
00:14:16And there's already so much activity.
00:14:21Elephant.
00:14:22That was an elephant.
00:14:25That was an elephant.
00:14:27Like it almost sounds like it's coming out.
00:14:32Those are steps.
00:14:40There's a lot of movement in that water, man.
00:14:42There is so much movement.
00:14:44There's a lot of movement in that water.
00:14:58That was different.
00:15:01That's not what?
00:15:03That one.
00:15:05That was different.
00:15:06Do you see anything?
00:15:08Okay.
00:15:23It was coming from that direction, right over here, and it sounds, yeah, that's rough.
00:15:38What is it?
00:15:40It would make me more comfortable if it was a carp and not a lion.
00:15:43It would make me more comfortable if it was a carp and not a lion.
00:16:12We heard elephants, hippos, then I heard this, like, guttural, like, getting closer and closer.
00:16:20It was pretty intense.
00:16:21All right.
00:16:23Okay.
00:16:23Team.
00:16:24Sorry to interrupt.
00:16:26You both know Uwundi, our head ranger.
00:16:29Yeah.
00:16:29Hi, Uwundi.
00:16:30Bye.
00:16:31Uwundi needs to give you some very important information.
00:16:35So I would like to show you something on the ground over there.
00:16:39After scouting the perimeter of Ernie and Mandy's boma, one of the local rangers is concerned about their nighttime safety.
00:16:46Oh, they're close.
00:16:49Is that a paw?
00:16:50Yeah.
00:16:51He was a lioness.
00:16:52Lioness?
00:16:53Yes.
00:16:53That's really scary.
00:16:59And then it went around.
00:17:01Boma's right there.
00:17:03Like, we are right there.
00:17:04Yeah, you see?
00:17:04There.
00:17:05It walked through here.
00:17:07Oh, my gosh.
00:17:09Look at how close it was.
00:17:11So this is the pole here.
00:17:13And this part here, this worked.
00:17:17She peed here.
00:17:18And you can tell that she was facing that direction.
00:17:21Oh, my God.
00:17:22This is insane.
00:17:24Find out that the lioness was about 15 feet from our boma, it's scary to me.
00:17:29She had used the bathroom right there.
00:17:31Is that her way of marking her territory?
00:17:34Trying to come back that way?
00:17:36It very well could be.
00:17:38I'm not sure.
00:17:39So just put it more into perspective, like, just how dangerous all of this really is.
00:17:44This is part of their hunting grounds and their territory.
00:17:47So make sure that you have to improve the structure of your boma for your safety.
00:17:51Yeah.
00:17:52Absolutely will.
00:17:53Yeah.
00:17:53We're in their territory.
00:17:55Like, this is their spot.
00:17:56This is their home.
00:17:57Yeah.
00:17:57That's a huge wake up call.
00:17:59Mm-hmm.
00:17:59The boma needs to be improved today.
00:18:01We'll get that knocked out.
00:18:02Yeah.
00:18:10In order to protect themselves from the female lion in the area, Mandy and Ernie will reinforce
00:18:16their boma building taller and thicker walls to prevent animals from entering.
00:18:21If you can put the palms, it'll block the view.
00:18:25I'm cutting down the bigger branches.
00:18:27We're going anywhere from 7 to 10 feet.
00:18:29Mandy's going inside and weaving all the palms in between so they have their thorns.
00:18:33So it's like the secondary inner layer of protection so that, you know, you can't necessarily see.
00:18:39We want predators to walk right by us and not even know we're there.
00:18:43Stack it up.
00:18:44Can't lie.
00:18:45I felt like our shelter was ready yesterday and found out today that it's not.
00:18:49But the good thing about mistakes is that you learn from them and you become better.
00:18:52Ugh.
00:18:54I want to be able to show during this entire challenge that you can grow.
00:18:58You can do hard things.
00:19:00And if you want to learn it, you can do it.
00:19:04That palm looks like a wall.
00:19:05You did such a good job.
00:19:07So we still have some work to do, but compared to what we had last night, it's night and day.
00:19:13And hopefully we get some good sleep tonight.
00:19:15Yay.
00:19:16Yay.
00:19:16That would be great.
00:19:36There's something walking outside the right side of our bow rod.
00:19:39Where are you going?
00:19:41Where are you going?
00:19:42Where are we going?
00:19:44Are we still sleeping?
00:19:49It's something that would be great right over there.
00:20:17Good morning, Mandy.
00:20:19Good morning.
00:20:19There was a lion right outside our boma.
00:20:22Oh, my God.
00:20:24It's scary.
00:20:25But luckily, the boma blocked it out.
00:20:27Yeah.
00:20:28He slept right through it.
00:20:30Something that is not different from the Yucatan is Ernie will fall asleep within five minutes.
00:20:34That's nothing new.
00:20:35And it's like I don't want to wake him, even if I am scared, because I can function on little
00:20:42sleep.
00:20:43And I know he does not.
00:20:44But just like Ernie has his kryptonite of sleep, my kryptonite is weight loss.
00:20:49I'm going to start getting hungry soon.
00:20:51I'm excited about going fishing.
00:20:54I really am, too.
00:20:54The toughest part of the fan challenge for me was I never could acquire enough food.
00:21:02I failed at capturing some iguanas.
00:21:05I was right next to him.
00:21:07And it was a little defeating.
00:21:09I'm done.
00:21:10He wins.
00:21:11Get some bait.
00:21:13I am totally excited that Mandy brought fishing line because we got a fighting chance.
00:21:19I think there's two in here.
00:21:20OK.
00:21:21Let's get to fishing.
00:21:22Really hope we don't fall in because it is cold.
00:21:25Yeah.
00:21:26The water is really cold.
00:21:26There's scary things in there.
00:21:35You hear that?
00:21:36I did hear that.
00:21:43Do you see anything, any fish, any kind of activity?
00:21:47Not yet.
00:21:49There ain't here.
00:21:51I mean, this place used to be grass, you know, just a month ago.
00:21:55Right.
00:21:56The delta is not a river.
00:21:57It's not a lake.
00:21:58So for fish, it's not actual active habitat.
00:22:01The fish come in after the waters flood in.
00:22:06I've honestly never fished in an area like this.
00:22:10And I honestly don't know what to do.
00:22:12The fish, they're just not here yet.
00:22:14I'm frustrated.
00:22:15My last challenge, I made it 14 days with barely no food.
00:22:19And it was awful.
00:22:20I can't just say, oh, we're going to get food this time.
00:22:22Because what if we don't?
00:22:23I need to catch some food this time.
00:22:25I just need to figure it out.
00:22:26Look, there's a couple of lilies.
00:22:29Want to try to grab them since we're here?
00:22:30Yeah.
00:22:33Definitely be careful.
00:22:34Tell me if you see anything, any bubbles.
00:22:36Yeah.
00:22:37Or eyeballs.
00:22:51Good job, Ernie.
00:22:52Yeah.
00:22:52Good job.
00:22:54You know, some sort of win.
00:23:08Dairy gel.
00:23:09Just kind of looks like a really thick green bean.
00:23:13Just a bunch of mush.
00:23:14It is.
00:23:17So...
00:23:18Doesn't smell very good.
00:23:24What do you think?
00:23:26Mushy, not much of a spice.
00:23:28I'm just going to pretend it's overcooked celery.
00:23:31That's what we're doing.
00:23:32Yep.
00:23:34Yeah.
00:23:36Not bad.
00:23:38Not good.
00:23:42Lily's aren't off the menu.
00:23:44I don't know how much more I can eat.
00:23:45There's another one in there.
00:23:46I know.
00:23:48Hell no, we ain't eating none of that for breakfast.
00:23:51We are done with Lily's today.
00:23:54I can't enjoy it anymore.
00:23:55I'm over it.
00:23:56Yep, I'm over it.
00:23:58What is that?
00:23:59That was a warthog.
00:24:01Where did it come from?
00:24:03That.
00:24:04I want to kill it and I want to eat bacon.
00:24:07Yes.
00:24:07Yeah.
00:24:08it.
00:24:09Maybe I can get lucky.
00:24:10They live in huge holes.
00:24:13Okay.
00:24:13You don't think so?
00:24:14Boars are very aggressive.
00:24:15So if I just show up at the front and start tapping it,
00:24:18he'll try to attack me.
00:24:19Yep.
00:24:20If I'm lucky, he'd run towards me
00:24:22and I'd just be able to, like, stab him straight out.
00:24:27But ideally, I find him in his hole and I stab him in there.
00:24:32That's my plan.
00:24:35I'm not seeing any tracks.
00:24:40I mean, him finding a hole in there would be really smart.
00:24:44Like that.
00:24:47This might be a game trail.
00:24:51He might have run through here.
00:24:56There he is.
00:24:58Come here.
00:25:14It went that way to the left.
00:25:16He took off running.
00:25:17So I probably found his hidey hole.
00:25:21I would like to go out and look for Pumbaa again.
00:25:24There's nothing over here.
00:25:24But to be able to get something with my machete is super tough.
00:25:29I chased his ass down as far and as fast as I could.
00:25:33But I lost him on the edge of the island.
00:25:34We need to be smart hunters.
00:25:36And I did get exhausted chasing him.
00:25:39When looking at food strategy,
00:25:41it calls for a completely different game plan.
00:25:44I want to start scoping out tomorrow, like, little holes.
00:25:47Where do some birds hang out?
00:25:48And set some snares.
00:25:50Yeah.
00:25:51This is part of Mandy 2.0.
00:25:53Awesome.
00:25:53I want to hunt.
00:25:55I want to set traps.
00:25:56I want to get food for my partner and I.
00:25:58That's super important to me.
00:25:59Mandy 2.0 is learning from all the mistakes
00:26:03that Mandy made in her fan challenge.
00:26:15You gotta pay attention to these holes that I'm seeing.
00:26:19For a snare.
00:26:21If you're gonna sit there and say Mandy 2.0, you have to back it up.
00:26:24I want to say, hey, I went out and got us dinner.
00:26:28That's a big hole.
00:26:30Something could live in there.
00:26:31And with the sticks that are right over it, it's perfect for setting a trap.
00:26:38I'm going to make a snare trap out of cordage.
00:26:43In Yucatan, they had a pedoquin plant.
00:26:47This looks like it, but without the thorns.
00:26:50If you smash it, you can get the fibers out of there and make cordage.
00:26:55When you break them down, there's all these little fibers in there.
00:26:59And you can roll them a certain way and twist them to make cordage.
00:27:05See?
00:27:06Look at that.
00:27:07Boom, boom, boom.
00:27:08And now I just gotta keep going.
00:27:10Look at you.
00:27:13Man, Mandy has rocked from where she was at our 14 to what she's doing now.
00:27:19That's grit.
00:27:20I mean, the girl is mission-focused.
00:27:24It is.
00:27:26I'll be back.
00:27:33Technically, I am hunting right now, passively.
00:27:36And that's actually what you want to do, because we don't have calories coming in yet.
00:27:40It's all calories going out.
00:27:41It's just gonna come out, and it's just gonna get caught up in my snare.
00:27:45I'm gonna lay it down, and I'm gonna block it off, so that way it's not tempted to run in
00:27:52a different pass.
00:27:54Perfect.
00:27:55Now we wait.
00:28:04I'm gonna go check my snare.
00:28:06I think it's a great idea.
00:28:09Aw.
00:28:10It broke.
00:28:11It broke through it.
00:28:12Which means there's something in there.
00:28:17I'm onto something, but my snares aren't strong enough.
00:28:20Man.
00:28:21It's frustrating, like...
00:28:23Well, as they're out here, out in the heat, they're gonna dry out some, too.
00:28:27I'm frustrated with my snares, and I'm very disappointed in myself, but it wasn't due to lack of trying.
00:28:36So, I just gotta learn from it and move on.
00:28:43Let's get to fishing before it gets, because the sun's really starting, I'm starting to feel it now on my
00:28:46shoulders.
00:28:47Okay, we wanna set lines.
00:28:49You know, last time, we did not catch fish, so we are going to be setting lines today.
00:28:56Okay.
00:28:57So, we're gonna have two poles, and we're going to set two lines on each pole.
00:29:04Hopeful that this is gonna be a very awesome, passive way of fishing.
00:29:10Mandy and Ernie's deadline system will consist of two baited hooks and lines attached to a pole that is then
00:29:17secured into the basin floor and left for passive fishing.
00:29:22Ernie, work that pole, buddy.
00:29:24I'm working that pole.
00:29:25It's time to get fishy with it.
00:29:27That's right.
00:29:28That's right.
00:29:32Yeah, it feels like the water has definitely risen in the last few days.
00:29:36I don't remember it going up to almost our knees.
00:29:39So, fish should be coming in.
00:29:41Okay.
00:29:42Today, we're gonna try to push it to a little bit deeper water.
00:29:46That's where the productivity's gonna be.
00:29:48I think that's where we're gonna see more probabilities and chances.
00:29:53Right here?
00:29:53Right here is good.
00:29:54See how there's kind of like this open clear spot a little bit?
00:29:57We're gonna try setting some lines.
00:30:00It's such a passive way to hunt.
00:30:02Okay, good.
00:30:03Okay, so when you lean that way, I'm gonna lean this way a little bit.
00:30:06Going 14 days in the Yucatan with only cactus, it was really awful.
00:30:11Oh, it's not enough.
00:30:13So, one of my biggest fears was like, what if we don't get anything?
00:30:17I don't know if we can make it 21 days without anything.
00:30:20Two, three.
00:30:21Two, three.
00:30:23There we go.
00:30:27Great job, Ernie.
00:30:39My energy sucks today.
00:30:42It's pretty obvious that we are expending way more calories than we're getting in.
00:30:46But as much as I realize that, I can't keep dwelling on that.
00:30:50A positive attitude, a positive mindset, it's everything.
00:30:56Wow.
00:30:57There's this much water over here.
00:31:00This pot gets heavy, but it's full of water.
00:31:04I'm losing my strength.
00:31:17Thanks.
00:31:19Almost there.
00:31:20We are using the Makoro exclusively for fishing.
00:31:24Oh, I see it.
00:31:25Okay.
00:31:25It's right ahead of us.
00:31:26Checking our lines, all about food.
00:31:28How do we want to approach this so we don't knock it down?
00:31:31We are definitely getting hungry.
00:31:34Every day has to be a strategic calculation of where we burn calories, where we don't.
00:31:38And that's part of our routine now.
00:31:41Go out and check it.
00:31:42Nothing.
00:31:43There's nothing on that one.
00:31:44No, nothing on that one.
00:31:45All right.
00:31:46Okay.
00:31:46But I still got the bait.
00:31:47Yep.
00:31:48Still got the hook.
00:31:49Still got the bait.
00:31:50It's pretty important that we get something soon.
00:31:52Not gonna lie.
00:31:54This kicked my ass.
00:31:56I can already feel it.
00:31:57My stomach's growling all day.
00:32:00Scatterbrained.
00:32:03Strength isn't 100%.
00:32:04And it really does start wearing on me.
00:32:07I'm freaking wiped out.
00:32:10I'm pretty tired myself.
00:32:11My heart is freezing.
00:32:15You want to have some water real quick?
00:32:16Yeah.
00:32:16That sounds great.
00:32:18I think it's pretty heavy.
00:32:19So you got to be careful how you pick it up.
00:32:23Can't just grab the handles.
00:32:27Oh, gosh.
00:32:28It's heavy.
00:32:31Did it get you?
00:32:45It did, but not bad.
00:32:52It's on my legs, but...
00:32:53Okay.
00:32:54It's not on my feet.
00:32:57I'm just gonna go sit in the water for a second.
00:32:59Cold water.
00:33:00Okay.
00:33:03Whew.
00:33:04It burns pretty bad right now.
00:33:07Okay.
00:33:07I might have a couple blisters already forming.
00:33:10But here's the deal.
00:33:12That could have been my feet.
00:33:14That could have been it.
00:33:15You know, I made a mistake that could have possibly gotten me med tapped,
00:33:20and that was just a very, very eye-opening experience,
00:33:22because this challenge means everything to me,
00:33:25and can't afford to be making stupid mistakes like that.
00:33:30It burns.
00:33:31I just wanted to just check on you in your head space right now.
00:33:35I'm good.
00:33:36Okay.
00:33:36Just a little scare.
00:33:37It just shows you how fast your strength can just go.
00:33:42Yep.
00:33:43When you come out to a place like this, it slices away at you.
00:33:46Thin slices, but it does get to you.
00:33:48Yeah, yeah.
00:33:49And there's something we're gonna have to look after.
00:33:51I'm glad you're okay.
00:33:54Me too.
00:33:55I think that's why I'm not upset right now,
00:33:57because I'm so grateful,
00:33:58because I know that could have been really bad.
00:34:00Yeah.
00:34:12All right.
00:34:13So let's check our lines.
00:34:15Yep.
00:34:15Look out for any crocs, any snakes in here.
00:34:18Oh, she's getting deeper every day.
00:34:23Even though we're only day seven here,
00:34:25we did 14 in Yucatan.
00:34:27Just heard my stomach growl.
00:34:29And to go 21 days without anything to eat,
00:34:33that can be quite discouraging,
00:34:34and it really starts to mess with your mind if you let it,
00:34:38you know?
00:34:39Getting started is like the hardest part.
00:34:41Yeah.
00:34:41There's times where I'm thinking, what am I even doing?
00:34:44Like, I suck at this.
00:34:46There is our first line.
00:34:51So, no activity yet.
00:34:53Okay.
00:34:58One line looks tight.
00:35:00It does.
00:35:01It's tilted a little bit.
00:35:03Yeah, but.
00:35:04It could just be caught, but.
00:35:06Mm-hmm.
00:35:13Okay.
00:35:14Okay.
00:35:15Oh, my God.
00:35:16It's a catfish.
00:35:17We did it.
00:35:19Here we go.
00:35:20It's our first catch.
00:35:22It's a really, really big deal.
00:35:25It's a very big deal.
00:35:26Look.
00:35:26This is huge.
00:35:28Yeah.
00:35:29It is.
00:35:31This is what it's about.
00:35:32This is what it looks like to win in Botswana, Africa.
00:35:37There you go, sweetie.
00:35:39Oh, my God.
00:35:40Remember, always grab it by the mouth and the gills.
00:35:42Never by the body.
00:35:43Like, I'm so grateful.
00:35:45Like, this is such a big deal.
00:35:47Such a big deal.
00:35:49My last challenge, we just didn't catch anything.
00:35:52There is an iguana.
00:35:53Yeah.
00:35:54And I felt defeated.
00:35:58You're so fast.
00:36:00We're trying so hard.
00:36:02It's just not good enough.
00:36:04And today was just that validation to prove that.
00:36:08So grateful.
00:36:10I really am a survivalist.
00:36:12Like, it's a game changer, you know?
00:36:14How long has it been since you've eaten catfish?
00:36:17I've never had catfish.
00:36:18Holy .
00:36:19Are you me?
00:36:21No.
00:36:21Girl, you just don't know.
00:36:22Trust me.
00:36:23This is like the best first time to ever have it.
00:36:25Let's go have some breakfast.
00:36:27Okay.
00:36:30I'd rather clean it here in the shallow.
00:36:33Yep.
00:36:34You just tell me what you need me to do to help you with this,
00:36:36because I have never done this before.
00:36:38I am pretty open to whatever my partner can teach me.
00:36:42I'm hitting the breastplate.
00:36:43Right.
00:36:44So here we go.
00:36:47All the entrails are all there.
00:36:49Yep.
00:36:49And I'm learning.
00:36:50And I want to learn more.
00:36:52I'm slowly starting to feel like I am delivering Mandy 2.0.
00:36:57Okay.
00:36:58So now you clean it out.
00:36:59Yep.
00:36:59I'm going to grab this.
00:37:03There we go.
00:37:05Being from Arkansas, this is definitely not my first time with catfish.
00:37:08I love catfish.
00:37:10However, it is my first time having to cook it over a campfire.
00:37:14I'm just like over the moon.
00:37:17I've never done anything like this.
00:37:19I'm glad I get to do it with you.
00:37:21It's just freaking awesome.
00:37:24You can hear the oil dripping into the fire and its spark up.
00:37:27That's a good sound.
00:37:31This is absolutely delicious, wouldn't you say, partner?
00:37:38It's wonderful.
00:37:39Oh, it's so like melt in your mouth.
00:37:41Mm-hmm.
00:37:42Gratitude had a flavor right now.
00:37:44This would be it.
00:37:45This would be it.
00:37:47Just so grateful to share this moment.
00:37:49It's something we've been waiting for for so long.
00:37:52Our bodies needed this so badly.
00:37:54We have starved.
00:37:56And now it's our first meal.
00:37:59Like I have goosebumps.
00:38:00Like it's just, it's such an amazing day.
00:38:05Like I will remember day seven forever.
00:38:35I can't wait for five years.
00:38:37Do you see any of those people here?
00:38:38That's so quick.
00:38:38That's so quick.
00:38:38A little bit.
00:38:38And now it's not much better.
00:38:40The one of the big Polymer is not too heavy.
00:38:41I'm hungry, but I'm hungry and my mind is too big.
00:38:41All right, man.
00:38:41You're hungry.
00:38:42Those things hurt.
00:38:43That hurt.
00:38:44I need to sit down right now.
00:38:46We're struggling.
00:38:47Whatever these things are that are biting, it stings.
00:38:51It's a sharp sting, like a little needle prick.
00:38:56And, um...
00:38:58It is a prick.
00:38:59And it's a prick.
00:39:00It is a prick.
00:39:01Pun intended.
00:39:02Yeah.
00:39:09You heard the buzzing?
00:39:10Oh, it landed on me.
00:39:13I've got a bit like 10 times the ceiling down.
00:39:16It's a real bag.
00:39:18Now, it's like I can't get them off.
00:39:25They are here.
00:39:27F***.
00:39:30It's so f***ing.
00:39:32I have not been able to sleep.
00:39:35Because I just keep getting attacked by these bugs.
00:39:41I want to go to my house.
00:39:43I want to go to my house.
00:39:45I'm going to go to my house.
00:39:46I want to go to my house.
00:39:47Oh.
00:39:58Are you awake?
00:40:00I don't know.
00:40:02Last night was awful.
00:40:04The bugs tired the hardest part of this challenge so far.
00:40:07It's crazy.
00:40:08I have double the bites today than I did the whole time.
00:40:14Absolutely.
00:40:15The bugs feast on me all night long.
00:40:20You have a ton of bites.
00:40:21I know.
00:40:21It feels like it.
00:40:22I'm probably up to 1,000 bug bites at this point.
00:40:25It takes a lot for me to lose my crap.
00:40:28I almost lost my crap last night.
00:40:30In the history of Naked and Afraid,
00:40:33it's not food that knocks most people out.
00:40:35It's the bugs.
00:40:37Those bugs are destroying me.
00:40:40I can hardly walk.
00:40:41It's got to be a time where you draw the line.
00:40:43And this is it.
00:40:45I have more than one tick in my butt.
00:40:47Oh, no, no.
00:40:49I cannot sleep at night.
00:40:51Oh, my God.
00:40:52It's f***ing torture.
00:40:54Get me out!
00:40:56So the bugs, that's something we have to solve,
00:41:00or everything else gets harder.
00:41:02We need to start working on the shelter.
00:41:05I know that lean-to's super important to both of us, so we can build walls and try to protect
00:41:12us from the bugs.
00:41:14And just in case it rains, we do need something.
00:41:16I love it.
00:41:17Yep.
00:41:17Let's do that.
00:41:18Okay.
00:41:19Mandy and Ernie will combat bugs by building an enclosed lean-to structure with thatched
00:41:25walls for protection, and move the fire closer for extra heat and smoke.
00:41:31A shelter will provide us a solid surface cover and a reflecting wall, and we'll be able
00:41:40to bring the fire in closer to keep bugs away.
00:41:44This lean-to is pretty important to both of us, but it's also not something we can whip
00:41:50up in a day.
00:41:51So we're starting it tonight.
00:41:53It's not going to finish, but there's a chance it could be finished by tomorrow.
00:41:56But it's pretty important, so I'd like it to be done as soon as possible.
00:42:07Let's get this thing started.
00:42:09So we're going to be constructing the lean-to right here.
00:42:12So this is a possible Y brace, so we're going to keep that here.
00:42:17This is our cross beam.
00:42:19Shelter is the inner perimeter.
00:42:22This is our interior design.
00:42:25Yeah.
00:42:26We've done the exterior, now we've got to do the interior.
00:42:28Right.
00:42:29So this is going to be our Y.
00:42:31Absolutely.
00:42:32Prior to even going on the challenge, I've heard from a lot of survivalists before on
00:42:35Naked and Afraid how they don't like to worry about shelter because it's a waste of time,
00:42:39and they burn too much energy, blah, blah, blah.
00:42:42All right.
00:42:42Let me secure these.
00:42:43I definitely have the polar opposite thought.
00:42:46Hey.
00:42:47After the Yucatan and after these bugs, I will say shelter is imperative.
00:42:54All right.
00:42:55The basic structure is up.
00:42:57We made some adjustments.
00:42:58We made some adjustments.
00:42:58It's no longer a lean-to.
00:43:00It's just a shelter.
00:43:01However, I feel like there's still a lot to do.
00:43:04We're going to add walls, and then we're just going to tie some leaves on there.
00:43:08So tomorrow, hopefully we can finish the shelter entirely.
00:43:14Are you excited about tonight?
00:43:16No.
00:43:16No.
00:43:17Yeah.
00:43:17I know.
00:43:18I dread it.
00:43:19Stuck in one spot.
00:43:20Getting me eaten for breakfast, lunch, and dinner from these bugs.
00:43:25Tonight's going to suck so bad.
00:43:28It's going to suck so bad.
00:43:41Ouch.
00:43:45I just want to go sleep.
00:43:46Uh-huh.
00:43:47Yeah.
00:43:50Night time.
00:43:52Man, this is by far the worst the bugs have been for Ernina.
00:43:58It's very scary.
00:43:59They don't stop.
00:44:00They're going everywhere.
00:44:02Straight up just scratching and itching.
00:44:05Yeah.
00:44:05Your stomach, your legs, your head, your ears.
00:44:07Yeah.
00:44:08They're everywhere.
00:44:12Huh?
00:44:16Right by your right elbow.
00:44:18Don't throw my vagina.
00:44:22He's heard that everything in his motherhood wanted it on me tonight.
00:44:28I don't really want to burn the bummer down.
00:44:31And every bug that's in it.
00:44:34Yeah.
00:44:37They just don't stop.
00:44:45Mandy and I are still up.
00:44:48Bug bites all over our skin.
00:44:51All we are doing is being in pain.
00:44:55Get away from the .
00:45:00No sleep.
00:45:02Can't sit down.
00:45:03Can't lay down.
00:45:05But we get attacked again.
00:45:07That's also hard to see.
00:45:10I've been standing almost for 10 hours straight.
00:45:13Hard to death.
00:45:14This is torture.
00:45:18Tonight, 10 can eat .
00:45:46It's the first morning that I'm not my loud, obnoxious, happy self.
00:45:51Last night was very taxing on both of us.
00:45:57I have never experienced 10 hours of being bit by mosquitoes nonstop.
00:46:04You don't know how physically, emotionally, and mentally taxing that can be.
00:46:10Look at all those bites.
00:46:15Like, all those bites.
00:46:20They're just everywhere.
00:46:23They're everywhere.
00:46:25It broke me.
00:46:29For me, I get it out, and I cry, and I can move on.
00:46:34Ernie bottles it up and shuts down.
00:46:37And right now, he's kind of in shutdown mode.
00:46:43You know, as windy and as cold as it is right now, I'd rather it be like this than last
00:46:50night.
00:46:52Because if it's like this, there won't be any bugs.
00:47:08I'm going to check the lines by myself.
00:47:11I came into this challenge stating Mandy 2.0, wanting to be able to bring more to the table.
00:47:18So, I'm going to go do that.
00:47:21Pretty confident that if there's a fish, I can get it off and gut it and bait it and all
00:47:28the things.
00:47:29I know Ernie loves food, so if there's something to eat, that might lift his spirits a little bit.
00:47:41Oh!
00:47:42Oh!
00:47:43Hold on!
00:47:44The fish is alive.
00:47:46I've never done this without Ernie.
00:47:49That's a total game changer.
00:47:53All right.
00:47:56Oh!
00:47:58There's another one!
00:48:01Holy .
00:48:02Okay, okay, okay.
00:48:04What did Ernie teach me?
00:48:06What did Ernie teach me?
00:48:07Because they're slippery.
00:48:09No, no, don't go nowhere.
00:48:10Don't go nowhere.
00:48:11Okay, there's the hook.
00:48:13A rabbit.
00:48:14Oh, I got this bitch.
00:48:17Okay.
00:48:19So, this is really going to test my strength here.
00:48:23Oh!
00:48:26Where'd it go?
00:48:27Dang it.
00:48:27Oh, Ernie.
00:48:28I'm so sorry.
00:48:29Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
00:48:31Don't go nowhere.
00:48:32Come here.
00:48:34Oh, God.
00:48:35Yeah.
00:48:36Yeah.
00:48:37Yeah.
00:48:38Oh.
00:48:39Redemption, baby.
00:48:41That's redemption.
00:48:43So sorry.
00:48:44I got you.
00:48:46Okay, one down.
00:48:49One to go.
00:48:52Oh, this one's fat too.
00:48:53It's like harder to grab.
00:48:55I can hook my thumb in there.
00:48:58Like he taught me.
00:48:59My thumb is hooked.
00:49:01I should have done that with the last one.
00:49:03I was just too excited.
00:49:05Okay.
00:49:06Reset.
00:49:08Squeeze with the thighs.
00:49:12I did it.
00:49:14I did it.
00:49:16Look at the size of this thing.
00:49:21Mama's bringing home lunch.
00:49:34Lucy, I'm home.
00:49:37Time to get up.
00:49:39Look at that.
00:49:41Look at this.
00:49:43Not one, but two.
00:49:47Woo!
00:49:48Did you get them?
00:49:49Good job.
00:49:52Great.
00:49:54That's so cool.
00:49:55I'm super proud of her.
00:49:57It'll keep our spirits up.
00:49:59Keep us motivated.
00:50:00The last time we paved was the fish on day seven.
00:50:03That's what you're looking for.
00:50:04That's awesome.
00:50:07Food fixes everything.
00:50:09Try a piece of my barbecue.
00:50:13Mmm.
00:50:15It makes the reward that much sweeter.
00:50:19Really good.
00:50:22Yeah.
00:50:24There's not a lot of times where I will tell myself that I'm proud of myself.
00:50:29But I'm actually proud of myself today.
00:50:32I'm becoming more confident.
00:50:34And when I bring to the table, I don't want to ride the coattails of my partner.
00:50:38And I feel like I have steered away from that.
00:50:41I feel, I feel very empowered.
00:50:50It was good that we had this meal.
00:50:52The only apprehension is hopefully we get a good night's sleep tonight.
00:50:56Or everything else gets harder.
00:51:08It's gonna be cold tonight.
00:51:10I know.
00:51:12It'll be okay.
00:51:14Mm-hmm.
00:51:15ILL dynamics
00:51:29I love you too!
00:51:29I love you too!
00:51:29I love you too!
00:51:30Matthew Pfire.
00:51:30I love you too!
00:51:31I love you too!
00:51:33I love you too!
00:51:35I love you too!
00:51:38Now, I do it!
00:51:38Woo-hoo!
00:51:39Awesome!
00:51:42Allison Piril!
00:51:45I'm sorry, I'm going to go.
00:52:36There you go, there you go.
00:52:51It's really good for a minute.
00:53:05All I can do is shoot me out.
00:53:08That hurts.
00:53:37That was the worst cold night of my life.
00:53:42It's absolutely worse.
00:53:45It nearly broke me into tears.
00:53:47It was so, so hard.
00:53:52The pain of the cold and then the pain of the wind.
00:53:56And then you add on the other night with the bugs.
00:54:00Sleeping an hour or two out of 36 hours.
00:54:03Mentally and emotionally, I just feel broken.
00:54:06I didn't want to see you like that.
00:54:10I just kept thinking, please don't let him.
00:54:13I don't want to stay.
00:54:14Oh, I don't want to stay.
00:54:16I don't want to stay.
00:54:17I don't.
00:54:18I have zero desire to be here.
00:54:22I'm done.
00:54:25The only reason I'm here is for you.
00:54:28If you were anybody else, I'd have been on that boat yesterday.
00:54:32But I just, I don't want you to suffer from me.
00:54:36That's how friends do that.
00:54:39Long suffering.
00:54:41You can't want to be here for another person.
00:54:43That's only going to carry you so far.
00:54:46You still have nine days.
00:54:48That's a long time when you're miserable.
00:54:51I want him here.
00:54:53We really do need to create that wind barrier.
00:54:56That's all that matters today.
00:54:58Get the walls up on the shelter.
00:55:00Absolutely.
00:55:02If we don't get these walls.
00:55:05We're going to get them.
00:55:06We're going to get them.
00:55:09I want to be a 21-day survivalist, but I'm starting to hurt.
00:55:15Everything is awful.
00:55:17Like, I'm ready to walk right now.
00:55:25Fortifying the shelter more.
00:55:27We got crossbeam here, crossbeam here, and then we're just going to cut down a bunch of these
00:55:33and then shingle them.
00:55:34And then we're also going to add walls for blocking the wind and containing the heat.
00:55:41I'm filling in the roof right now.
00:55:44Yeah.
00:55:45Now we're going to work on the sides.
00:55:47So then it'll...
00:55:49Then we can just fill it in more every day.
00:55:50Absolutely.
00:55:51You have a couple of cords?
00:55:54You're awesome.
00:55:56Food focus is kind of taking priority above our shelter.
00:56:00If we had reinforced our shelter 12 days ago, last night wouldn't have been as bad of a night as
00:56:07it was.
00:56:09Holy s***.
00:56:11Woo!
00:56:12So I feel like if we finish our shelter, it'll help my motivation to stay much more.
00:56:20Looking good, Ernie.
00:56:23Well, we're making great strides forward.
00:56:25Yeah.
00:56:38The wind has really picked up and so far, so good.
00:56:44The shelter is holding up.
00:56:48If we didn't have this, I don't even know.
00:56:51Oh, God.
00:56:52I don't even want to contemplate the type of pain we would be in.
00:56:54If you've lost it all over again.
00:56:56I think we've got a good solution.
00:57:04Yesterday, you were just on a whole different level yesterday.
00:57:07Well, I got some sleep and I didn't please today.
00:57:09I feel like I've got Ernie back, like, you know.
00:57:14It's funny what a little bit of sleep can do for a soul.
00:57:21My high knee's cold.
00:57:22Your high knee?
00:57:23Bend over and grab your toes.
00:57:25No, I don't need to be that warm.
00:57:30What's that?
00:57:32Oh, we have not seen anything like this since we've been out here.
00:57:35What's up?
00:57:36I don't know what it is.
00:57:37It's like a grubby thing.
00:57:41Oh, it's squishy.
00:57:42Grubby things?
00:57:43Oh.
00:57:45We could use this as bait.
00:57:47Yeah.
00:57:48Like, it's...
00:57:49Is it still alive?
00:57:50Oh, yeah.
00:57:51It's alive.
00:57:51It's still alive?
00:57:52I think so.
00:57:52It's moving.
00:57:53Yeah, cold as too.
00:57:55That's awesome.
00:57:56I've been looking for grub since, like, day three and I could never find it.
00:58:01You know, it's pretty large.
00:58:02It's squishy.
00:58:03It almost reminds me of, like, one of my kids' fidgets.
00:58:05Um, I'm about to go take a walk down to our lines, and I'm going to bait this fella.
00:58:21I'm noticing that these walks are...
00:58:24They seem longer, even though they're not.
00:58:27My body's letting me know.
00:58:29So I'm really hoping that there's maybe even just one fish on there.
00:58:44I feel like this thing's going to juice everywhere.
00:58:50Oh, it did!
00:58:53Oh, that was super gross.
00:58:55Okay, so nothing here.
00:58:59Get this on there.
00:59:02Boom.
00:59:03All right.
00:59:05Moving on.
00:59:26So, Mandy, what day is it?
00:59:28Today is day 14, the end of week two.
00:59:31I thought it was going to be bittersweet.
00:59:32Like, I'm trying to be a little sad.
00:59:33Yeah, like a downer.
00:59:34Mm-hmm.
00:59:35Mm-mm.
00:59:35I'm not.
00:59:36I'm actually excited.
00:59:37Last challenge, we were heading out, which was super nice.
00:59:41Now we know we got another week.
00:59:43We need some sort of food source.
00:59:46I have to finish this challenge so I could humbly place myself at the footsteps of other survivalists
00:59:52and feel like I belong with them.
00:59:56My body is hungry.
00:59:57I barely made that 14-day challenge, and this is an additional week.
01:00:01We are so much more active here.
01:00:03We are walking around all the time, way more than I did in my last challenge.
01:00:07It's cold here at night.
01:00:08That sun gets real hot, so that's also exhausting.
01:00:16No fish.
01:00:17That's what it is.
01:00:43That's what it is now.
01:00:44Yeah.
01:00:55That's what it is.
01:01:23Last night, that hole, that growl.
01:01:27Yeah, it was definitely right behind our boma sounds like close.
01:01:34The f***?
01:01:37What are you looking at?
01:01:39Is that lion?
01:01:40Big kitty print.
01:01:41Is that a lion?
01:01:43I think it's a f***ing lion print.
01:01:45Look at the, look at how deep those claws, they're bigger than my thumb.
01:01:50And that's fresh.
01:01:52Our boma's 100 feet away.
01:01:54Mm-hmm.
01:01:55It's the second time a lion has been very close to our boma.
01:01:59And we still have a whole another week.
01:02:01This is not a petting zoo.
01:02:04There is danger all around us.
01:02:06I wouldn't have seen it happen.
01:02:08Just that very eye-opening.
01:02:09It just teaches us that we always have to be on alert.
01:02:14Seeing those lion tracks, it's not something I take lightly.
01:02:18It takes about two weeks for predators to get used to who's here and their surroundings, and then that's when
01:02:25they start closing in.
01:02:27Lots of places to hide.
01:02:30It's more important now than ever for both of us to be vigilant.
01:02:35Because if we can't face to face with a lion, I don't even know.
01:02:55This place, it's not ours at all.
01:02:58It's theirs.
01:03:00And they can do whatever they want, whenever they want.
01:03:02That's my concern.
01:03:04So let's think.
01:03:05Number one rule if we do see a lion looking at us.
01:03:09Don't run.
01:03:10Don't run.
01:03:12Now I'm not saying not to worry.
01:03:14I'm just saying if we protect one another, watch each other's back, close up at night, keep the fires going.
01:03:21Yeah.
01:03:28Night, if there's lions out there.
01:03:37I just made my fire.
01:03:41There.
01:03:42I just scared them away.
01:03:44We have a family to get our fire quite blind.
01:03:48I guess we're just kind of going to be here.
01:04:01Okay, you ready?
01:04:02Yeah.
01:04:03Do you mind if I set the pace?
01:04:05No, no, go ahead.
01:04:07I'm struggling today.
01:04:08Yeah, I can see it.
01:04:11It was hard for me to sleep at for a while because every little noise that I heard, I kept
01:04:16thinking it was like a lion walking and stuff.
01:04:19I am worried about Mandy because she gets anxiety and she's feeling pretty tired.
01:04:25So hopefully we have fish there and it'll work her up.
01:04:27I really want a fish, Ernie, but I'm trying not to even give up my hopes right now.
01:04:39There's no fish.
01:04:42Middle end, no fish, but it still has both its bait.
01:04:46No fish on any line.
01:04:48It's what it is.
01:04:56Oh, yeah, it's hard.
01:04:59You feeling all right?
01:05:02Why don't you have a seat?
01:05:03Drink some water.
01:05:05Yeah, it's not quite ready, but I am going to have a seat.
01:05:07Yeah.
01:05:09My body is angry at me right now.
01:05:13It's letting me know all the things.
01:05:16Oh, man.
01:05:18Moving a little slower.
01:05:21Whoa.
01:05:23I noticed the little things get my heart rate going.
01:05:27I'm going to catch my breath.
01:05:31I have to take more breaks.
01:05:34I only made it like 30 feet.
01:05:37I know I need to rest, but it's hard for me because I'm always busy.
01:05:45Mandy never stops.
01:05:47It's very noticeable how much weight she's lost and how depleted she is.
01:05:52If we don't catch a fish or two before extraction, I am very concerned for her well-being.
01:06:09I want to do better.
01:06:11I want something for my kids to be proud of.
01:06:25I'm not going to lie.
01:06:26I don't think I've ever wanted the fish so badly as I do today.
01:06:29I know Mandy desperately needs calories.
01:06:35Finding fish is imperative.
01:06:40Our sticks don't even look the slightest bit bent.
01:06:50Fortunately, nothing on that line.
01:06:52Yeah, there is.
01:06:53There is.
01:06:54Yep, there is.
01:06:55Look at that.
01:06:57Oh, hallelujah.
01:06:58All right.
01:06:58This is amazing.
01:07:01This is so wonderful.
01:07:02Look at this.
01:07:04Look at that.
01:07:06Look at that.
01:07:07Woo!
01:07:08Grubby, grubby, grubby, grubby.
01:07:09I was praying for a fish today.
01:07:12There's heavy, too.
01:07:13I'm going to check over here and I'll check the other one while you're working on that.
01:07:18You got it?
01:07:20Okay.
01:07:21I got one, too.
01:07:22Oh, my gosh.
01:07:25How exciting!
01:07:27Oh, s***.
01:07:28This is a completely different kind of fish right here.
01:07:31Okay.
01:07:32This is not from Arkansas.
01:07:33The fact that we just got this huge, huge score means everything to us.
01:07:39Two days and a wake up!
01:07:41This is going to do so much for our bodies and our mindset.
01:07:4614-day challenge.
01:07:47We had one cactus.
01:07:48One cactus between the two of us.
01:07:52We're just going to eat.
01:07:54And then we'll just flip them over after a while.
01:07:56Yep.
01:07:57We have two catfish, one bottlenose, and we couldn't be happier.
01:08:01I couldn't be happier.
01:08:02Had we not been successful, I'm not 100% confident Mandy would have made it through the challenge.
01:08:08So, this is really good to be able to physically repair, recover, push forward.
01:08:14This is all mine.
01:08:17Look at Ernie's.
01:08:18All in one piece.
01:08:23Mmm.
01:08:25Yeah.
01:08:26Now, I'm going to say it.
01:08:28Oh, my God.
01:08:29That crunchy.
01:08:31I can feel it warm.
01:08:34For 16 days.
01:08:35I can feel when they say, I can feel it nourishing my body.
01:08:40I can.
01:08:43Oh, my gosh.
01:08:45I'm very happy for you.
01:08:47Mmm.
01:08:48The flavor kind of reminds you of home, so it's a good place to be in your head.
01:08:53I am actually very, very excited to try this new fish of ours.
01:08:58Mmm.
01:08:59It's good.
01:09:00Now I have to get some tartar sauce, man.
01:09:02Dude, I was just thinking about that.
01:09:05If this is the last time we eat, we're going to be okay.
01:09:10Absolutely.
01:09:11You know?
01:09:11Yeah.
01:09:12Best day.
01:09:14Like, the best way to end my day.
01:09:28Oh, God.
01:09:33I'm totally out of breath.
01:09:35I came down to use the bathroom.
01:09:38There's elephants.
01:09:40Oh, my God.
01:09:41I'm out of breath.
01:09:42Right out there.
01:09:44Wow.
01:09:59They're crossing our end of the island, where we usually hear them, and they're following
01:10:02all the way along the back of this island, all the way to the back of our boma, which
01:10:08is where our watering hole is.
01:10:11It's right there.
01:10:20It's right at me.
01:10:24Listen, 20 yards away from me.
01:10:28Don't do anything.
01:10:29That elephant's looking to see if we're following.
01:10:33I find the bushes.
01:10:38Not only are elephants super territorial and dangerous, there's a mama with their baby.
01:10:44And that's a huge no-no.
01:10:48This is their home, and we have invaded it.
01:10:51We are out of here tomorrow, so we have to respect their space and be safe.
01:10:57That way we can leave.
01:10:59If they came running through here, they would just move us down.
01:11:24If they came running through here, they would just move us down.
01:11:27We're both going to hold a bark.
01:11:28You want me to go first?
01:11:29Yeah.
01:11:30Okay, go ahead.
01:11:31Who's first to cry?
01:11:34Who farts the most?
01:11:37Who pooped first?
01:11:41Who has the loudest farts?
01:11:43Oh.
01:11:47Hands down.
01:11:49Who sleeps the most?
01:11:52Who sleeps the most?
01:11:53Who's the first to complain?
01:11:56Hands down.
01:11:57Who's the most sensitive?
01:12:01Who loves Taco Bell?
01:12:03Oh!
01:12:05That was a good one.
01:12:06We do love Taco Bell.
01:12:10See, this is why we work so well.
01:12:12We're like right on the same page here.
01:12:20Oh.
01:12:25Oh.
01:12:27Oh.
01:12:28Oh, oh.
01:12:29Oh, oh.
01:12:31Oh, oh.
01:12:33Oh, oh.
01:12:36Oh, oh, oh.
01:12:39Yeah!
01:12:41Oh!
01:12:43Oh, oh.
01:12:48I'm gonna pick up Ma and Lee.
01:13:01It's Extraction Day, and we're so excited.
01:13:07But it's gonna suck so bad.
01:13:14Extraction, baby.
01:13:16Christmas, graduation, your birthday,
01:13:18all up in one little gift.
01:13:20I don't care that I didn't sleep last night.
01:13:22I don't care that the bugs bit my ass all night long.
01:13:24Don't care, because why?
01:13:25I'm leaving.
01:13:26And I will be in a bed tonight.
01:13:29Let's go through the map.
01:13:30That's north.
01:13:32Yeah.
01:13:32So that's where we are.
01:13:33Yeah.
01:13:35It was very busy last night.
01:13:37I know, I heard a lion.
01:13:38Yeah.
01:13:39Going around here, we hear a lot of elephants all the time.
01:13:42All the time.
01:13:42So we gotta be on lookout for that.
01:13:45As long as we're not seeing anything dangerous, then we can skirt the island in straight-line
01:13:48distance right through there.
01:13:51Yeah, so we'll be on the west side of the island.
01:13:53It's a lot of rowing, my friend.
01:13:54Yeah.
01:13:55We're just gonna have to push through.
01:13:58Got it.
01:13:59To get to their extraction point seven miles away, Ernie and Mandy will have to trek a
01:14:04half mile back to their fishing hole, avoiding the lions prowling near their camp.
01:14:10From the water's edge, they will need to navigate their Makoro through the Oak of Ango Delta's
01:14:15flooded waterways, fighting the unpredictable currents, steering clear of herds of elephants,
01:14:20and watching for crocs and hippos, lurking in the deeper channels.
01:14:25At the end of a deep and narrow waterway, they will be rescued.
01:14:32Finally.
01:14:33This is it.
01:14:34One step at a time.
01:14:36Cross that finish line.
01:14:38Whew.
01:14:41Yeah.
01:14:42Such a beast.
01:14:44Ooh, ooh, ooh.
01:14:45Good morning.
01:14:48Holy , that is cold.
01:14:52Oh, how could my shoulders be burning and my feet are frozen?
01:14:58This is rude.
01:15:03I'm tired.
01:15:05Yep, let's get on.
01:15:07My endurance is crap at this point.
01:15:09So just walking with two sticks takes a lot out of me.
01:15:13Then I got to get in this Makoro that I hate, and then I got to row for God knows
01:15:16how many
01:15:17miles.
01:15:17So just telling myself one step at a time.
01:15:20Not thinking of the overall picture.
01:15:22Just breaking it down into segments.
01:15:24It's not, not.
01:15:25If you just push across, if you try not to or push off the ground.
01:15:29Can you just push?
01:15:30Yeah, just push off the ground.
01:15:31OK.
01:15:33Ernie and I are going to switch positions.
01:15:34I need to save my strength.
01:15:35I need to be in the front this time.
01:15:37I can't do all of those things that I did last time.
01:15:40It's just not going to work.
01:15:41Are you OK?
01:15:42I'm all right.
01:15:43I'm tired.
01:15:44I know you are.
01:15:45We're so tired.
01:15:47Gotten so little sleep.
01:15:49And now we're about to do the ultimate fitness test across water and land.
01:15:55Power through.
01:15:56I don't want to get lost.
01:15:58I'll fall out of the boat.
01:16:00Risk not seeing a croc or a hippo underwater.
01:16:04I know this one's going to be much harder than it was in the Yucatan.
01:16:13Nice and easy.
01:16:16Yep, Mindy, can you turn?
01:16:17I'm trying to go left.
01:16:19Where are you going?
01:16:20I'm not doing anything.
01:16:21Oh.
01:16:22Current.
01:16:24You know, to help me, can you try to stay on one side?
01:16:27Let's try it like that for a little bit.
01:16:28All right, I'll stay on the left.
01:16:29OK.
01:16:31Yeah, I'm trying to turn.
01:16:37That macoro is so hard to operate.
01:16:40It takes a lot of core strength, especially at this stage of the game.
01:16:45Oh my gosh.
01:16:49Oh my god.
01:16:51Are you OK?
01:16:52OK.
01:16:53OK.
01:16:59My anxiety, 10 out of 10 today.
01:17:02You can't tip into that water.
01:17:03There's crocodiles and hippos all over the place.
01:17:12How many miles do you think we've gone?
01:17:14I don't know, man.
01:17:15We're on water.
01:17:15It takes forever.
01:17:17Sure does.
01:17:20I'm just letting you know my heart rate's really going.
01:17:24Woof, woof.
01:17:25Take a breather, seriously.
01:17:27No.
01:17:30Oh gosh, OK.
01:17:31Tall weeds, I'm looking for spiders.
01:17:34OK.
01:17:36OK.
01:17:38OK.
01:17:39My knees are starting to hurt a little bit, but OK, just.
01:17:43Oh, big spider.
01:17:45It's so big.
01:17:46Oh my god, I've got to get it out.
01:17:47Got to get it out.
01:17:48Got to get it out.
01:17:49Oh my god.
01:17:49Oh!
01:17:50Oh!
01:17:51Oh.
01:17:51Oh.
01:17:52Oh my god.
01:17:53OK.
01:17:54Ah!
01:17:55It did.
01:17:55Good job.
01:17:56There it is.
01:17:57OK.
01:17:58Good job.
01:17:58My heart rate's about to burst out of my chest.
01:18:03These reeds are so hard to pour through.
01:18:06It's shallow enough.
01:18:07I think I can get out and walk some of it.
01:18:10This is for the spiders.
01:18:13Ah, Lee, the water's cold.
01:18:15Yeah.
01:18:18Agh.
01:18:20In the Yucatan, it was just ugly, ugly, ugly trying
01:18:24to make it through trees.
01:18:25Here it's so much more open and it just doesn't stop.
01:18:29It just doesn't stop.
01:18:30It just doesn't stop.
01:18:43Oh my god.
01:18:45Oh, it's pretty cold.
01:18:47Yeah.
01:18:48And then the sun is just cranking it up.
01:18:52Is it getting harder?
01:18:53Oh yeah.
01:18:54Do you need me to get out?
01:18:56Yeah.
01:18:57Oh, that's cold.
01:19:00We've got to be around the four mile mark by now.
01:19:03And not only is there no determination in distance,
01:19:05but I don't know how heavy that Makoro actually is,
01:19:08but that son of a bitch feels like it's 1,000 pounds.
01:19:11You're in and out of the Makoro.
01:19:14Rowing, steering, walking.
01:19:17My body, I can feel it.
01:19:19It's just draining every step.
01:19:21Oh my god.
01:19:22It's so cold.
01:19:24We're going to finish this, hopefully.
01:19:29Oh, this is really tiring.
01:19:34It's really sad for sale, just for a second.
01:19:39Sorry, Ernie.
01:19:40It's fine.
01:19:41It's fine.
01:19:41My heart's just going really fast.
01:19:43OK.
01:19:44Oh, , we're not going to make it across this with that.
01:19:55OK, right after here, it starts getting deeper.
01:19:58OK.
01:19:59But.
01:20:00It's got to pull a little more.
01:20:01Yeah, pull that thing over the shallow water, back in the deeper
01:20:04water.
01:20:07OK, ready?
01:20:08Yeah.
01:20:09Ugh.
01:20:09Ugh.
01:20:13Ugh.
01:20:13Ugh.
01:20:14Ugh.
01:20:14This thing is so heavy.
01:20:16Sorry.
01:20:21Poor Mandy just bent.
01:20:23She's trying to pull, but I'm really pulling her and the Makoro at the same time.
01:20:28And that rope, it's cutting through me like string cheese.
01:20:33Ugh.
01:20:33Ugh.
01:20:34OK.
01:20:35Yeah.
01:20:36Holy .
01:20:37Ugh.
01:20:38OK.
01:20:40Man.
01:20:41Just, yeah, breathe.
01:20:42Breathe.
01:20:44Breathe.
01:20:44Smoked.
01:20:45Smoked.
01:20:45Breathe.
01:20:50You're in the middle of nowhere.
01:20:53Ugh, damn, it's f***ing cold.
01:20:57Oh, no.
01:20:59Oh, that wind.
01:21:02Oh, my God.
01:21:04It'd be so much easier if we were going with the current.
01:21:07How far do you think we've gone?
01:21:09Ernie, I honestly don't know.
01:21:11Ugh.
01:21:12It just keeps going on and on.
01:21:18Is that for us?
01:21:20Oh, that can't be for us, can it?
01:21:22Holy s***.
01:21:23Woo-hoo!
01:21:24Holy s***.
01:21:26Are you f***ing kidding me?
01:21:28Oh.
01:21:28Rescued by the USS.
01:21:30Let's go.
01:21:34Oh.
01:21:36So cold.
01:21:39I came into this challenge stating Mandy 2.0.
01:21:46I have surpassed what I thought I could do.
01:21:51I love you.
