00:45we were very excited that the story got accolades and awards,
00:49e we really took that seriously
00:51and evolved the story for The Force Unleashed 2.
00:53The fact that George allowed us to fill the gap between Episodes 3 and 4
00:56gave us not only a challenge, but also a responsibility to the fans.
01:00So the story that fits between Episodes 3 and 4 has to make sense.
01:04It is a time period that hasn't been very well defined in the past.
01:07Darth Vader is hunting down The Last of the Jedi,
01:10the Rebel Alliance is really fledgling,
01:12and the Empire is really locking down control of the whole galaxy.
01:16The Force Unleashed 1 ended where Secret Apprentice saved the Rebellion
01:20by sacrificing himself,
01:21and we thought that was a great place to take off.
01:24The big question now has become, how did that happen?
01:28The story for The Force Unleashed 2 really evolved.
01:30It became a lot darker, a lot grittier,
01:33and most importantly to me, a lot more personal.
01:37We decided to allow The Apprentice to grow up
01:40and to become much more self-aware,
01:42and he went from being Secret Apprentice
01:44to somebody that we actually call a name, Starkiller.
01:47He's actually a person,
01:48and he introspectively is trying to figure out
01:51why he keeps doing what he's told,
01:53and actually decides that maybe he shouldn't be doing what he's told.
01:56He should actually go out there and pursue his own identity
01:59and figure out who he is.
02:01Because we start Starkiller off as allegedly a clone,
02:05and a clone who's going insane,
02:07immediately we already have a little darker tone to the story as well,
02:10so you're not really sure where he's going to end up,
02:13whether or not he's a clone, whether or not he's going insane.
02:16We've really focused on making him a little bit less
02:18about the big galactic struggle and more about this character
02:21and what his motivations are and what he's going through.
02:23You will return to me and give yourself to the dark side.
02:27Every time we do a Star Wars game,
02:29we're always trying to expand the Star Wars universe,
02:31so Force Unleashed is a great franchise because for fans of Star Wars,
02:35you're able to play it and see things that are familiar to you.
02:38You're able to see Darth Vader and learn more about him.
02:41You're able to see Princess Leia and what she's doing during this time period
02:44and see the formation of the Rebel Alliance and how the galaxy is evolving,
02:48but because we're always expanding everything and adding new things,
02:51you also get to encounter new characters,
02:52so Starkiller has evolved and become a hero in his own right.
02:57We wanted to continue the story of Starkiller, Darth Vader,
03:00Juno Eclipse, and General Coda,
03:02but with Force Unleashed 2, Boba Fett and Yoda
03:04play really key pivotal roles that are instantly recognizable to fans
03:08and make the story stronger.
03:10What's really cool about that is that it resonates to some of the things
03:14that you might remember for The Empire Strikes Back,
03:17where, for example, Luke was trying to figure out his self-identity,
03:21and he goes to Dagobah and meets the incredible Yoda.
03:25I'm looking for someone.
03:27Looking? Found someone you have, I would say.
03:31and goes to the Cave of Evil and uses that experience to get to the other side,
03:36much more aware, at least much more aware of what his next direction needs to be.
03:41We did something very similar for The Force Unleashed 2,
03:44where Starkiller, in the hunt for his identity, ends up in Dagobah.
03:50He, of course, comes across Jedi Master Yoda.
03:52However, he doesn't know who Yoda is.
03:55Yoda is just this kind of creature that he discovers guarding what we call the Cave of Evil,
03:59this place of immense power on Dagobah,
04:03where Luke Skywalker had his vision of Darth Vader in Empire Strikes Back.
04:07Something lost. A part of yourself, perhaps.
04:10Yoda kind of helps Starkiller figure out the next steps in his journey,
04:14really encourages him to go into the Cave of Evil and have a vision of his own
04:17in order to continue on his journey and figure out where Juno Eclipse might be.
04:24Early in the story process, one of the designers suggested,
04:26well, what if Boba Fett tried to spear Juno Eclipse away?
04:30We know from a lot of the expanded universe that Boba Fett has been working for the Empire,
04:35and it made sense that Vader would hire somebody like Boba Fett to help him track down Starkiller.
04:40Boba Fett plays a key part in making sure that somehow Darth Vader gets to find Starkiller again.
04:49One of our mantras has been familiar but new.
04:52We really want to put elements into the game that feel familiar,
04:55but put a new spin on them or introduce things in a new way.
04:59I think that as a very young medium we really haven't scratched the surface
05:03in terms of the types of stories we can tell and how different those stories can be
05:07from things like film or novels, and that's really exciting too.
05:10So I'm really glad that we're constantly focused on telling new stories
05:13and finding new ways to tell those stories too.
