Ravyn Lenae talks about learning from SZA and her upcoming new album with Sean Mack at Sips & Sounds Music Festival.
Transcript
00:00Cool.
00:01Mix 94.7 is Sean Mack broadcasting from Sips and Sounds Music Festival, South by Southwest.
00:06Raven Lene in the house.
00:07Hi.
00:07How are you?
00:08I'm doing great, honestly.
00:09Good.
00:10Just got off stage.
00:11Yep.
00:11How was it out there?
00:12It looked a little warm.
00:13It was warm.
00:14But honestly, it was everything.
00:16The crowd was so fun and energetic and welcoming, and that's all I could ask for, really.
00:21Yeah.
00:22This is where I remind you that it's snowing in Chicago this week.
00:24Girl!
00:25Thank you for that reminder.
00:27Right.
00:27Cool you off just a little bit.
00:29Welcome back to Austin.
00:30You've been here before, of course.
00:31I have, yeah.
00:32Actually, I didn't realize this at the time, but I've seen you live before because you opened
00:36for SZA.
00:37I did.
00:38The control tour.
00:39A while back.
00:39This was 2017.
00:41Yeah.
00:41I was at that show.
00:42Wow.
00:42Yeah.
00:43So here we are again.
00:44I love that.
00:45Do you have any memories, particular memories of that tour, favorite memories of working
00:48with SZA?
00:49Yeah.
00:49That was probably one of the most important tours I've done, only because being able to
00:54see SZA have her rise in that moment and kind of have a front seat at it was really special.
01:00And I think, you know, when you see what it really takes to, I don't know, have that
01:05type of impactful moment in your career.
01:06It really inspires you.
01:08So I'm glad you made that show.
01:10Yeah.
01:10It was amazing.
01:11It was sold out.
01:11Of course.
01:12Yeah.
01:12That was 2017.
01:13Now we're in 2026.
01:14Yeah.
01:15Looking back, I'm going to ask you to give some advice to 2017 Raven Lene.
01:19If you could go back and give any advice today to your younger self, what would it be?
01:23I would tell her to keep leaning into exactly who she is.
01:27And I know there's something so cliche about that, but I think in hindsight, it's so important
01:31to just lean into who you are and not get distracted by what else is going on or what's
01:36popular or what's trendy because what you're doing eventually becomes popular and trendy,
01:41you know?
01:42So just stick to who you are.
01:44Speaking of popular and trendy, love me not.
01:45What an incredible year this year has been.
01:47And do you have any particular favorite memories over the past year with the success of this
01:51particular song?
01:52I have to say being able to sing it in my hometown at Lollapalooza, which is a festival
01:58I grew up going to and always dreamed of playing that stage.
02:03So to be able to do it and have my family in the crowd, it just felt like a dream.
02:08Amazing.
02:09This song was everywhere, still is.
02:11I remember hearing it, of course, on the radio.
02:12I heard it in the grocery store.
02:14Wow.
02:14Is there anywhere that you heard it where you're like, wow, this really is everywhere
02:18right now?
02:18Probably the airport.
02:20Yeah.
02:21That's when it hits me when I'm like, my eyes are crusty and my nose is running.
02:25And I'm like, wait, is that me?
02:27You could point to TSA and be like, this is me.
02:29Can I get the clear path?
02:30Exactly.
02:31Try to get through a little bit quicker.
02:34You're a fashion icon.
02:36Oh, thank you.
02:36Amazing looks.
02:37You always serve them on the red carpet.
02:38Do you have a particular inspiration for your look?
02:41What would you describe your general fashion look as?
02:43Or does it change?
02:44It does change.
02:45But I do think like something that I like to incorporate into my music and fashion is really
02:50playing with the tension of hard and soft.
02:54That's so fun to me.
02:55Like I think having something like as dainty as this, but then having like, you know,
02:59chopped ends or just like black heels just kind of makes it a little like punkier.
03:04Props for doing heels on stage, by the way, dancing around heels.
03:08I can run to knees.
03:08No easy feet.
03:09Oh, really?
03:11Also impressive.
03:12What is the rest of the year looking like for you?
03:14You're always working on music, of course.
03:16Yeah.
03:16Anything in particular you want to share or just kind of working in stuff in general?
03:19I'm really excited to be dropping my album soon.
03:22Okay.
03:22It's almost done.
03:23Do we have a name?
03:24I can't say that yet.
03:25All right.
03:26To Be Determined.
03:27That's not the name of the album.
03:28To Be Determined.
03:29That would be a good name of an album.
03:30It would be.
03:31Keep them on their toes.
03:32Keep them waiting.
03:33That's right.
03:35But super excited to get that out into the world.
03:37Can't wait.
03:38One final thing before I let you go.
03:39Oscars are this Sunday.
03:40I know you're like a movie girl.
03:42You like going to the movies.
03:43Anything you saw in the past year where you're like, this was my favorite movie or movies
03:46of the past year?
03:46Oh, you know what?
03:47There is a movie called Lurker that I thought was amazing.
03:50I've heard of this.
03:50I've not seen it.
03:51Yeah.
03:52I'm not sure if it's nominated this year.
03:54If it's not, it should have been.
03:55Uh huh.
03:56But incredible storyline.
03:58Actors.
03:59Okay.
04:00Watch it.
04:00Stream it today.
04:02Raven Lenay recommend.
04:03It's like Letterboxd.
04:04You're giving your Letterboxd recommendations.
