01:06It was since they had to perform a lot of functions, it was important to get them to transform accurately.
01:13When they were in vehicle mode, I wanted them to look like a tank that walked.
01:17And then when they turned into their structure mode, it was important for me to make it look like a
01:23building and not a parked vehicle.
01:24I have to make two models and put in one texture.
01:28I received a concept which is just the 3D model shape of it.
01:35So the challenge for me is to come up with the texture on, it's like the skin on that model.
01:41My task on the crawler was to make it come alive.
01:46So it was a little bit challenging.
01:48My task was to take the crawler after modeling and make sure it could actually transform from unit to structure
01:59and vice versa.
02:00And also that the procedural destruction that you see featured in the game was working correctly.
02:06In C&C 4 we wanted to introduce a deeper degree of destruction, try to give to the player a
02:12good satisfaction feeling when they managed to destroy one of the larger units.
02:17And we wanted to portray the unit being literally destroyed little by little and see the inside of the unit
02:26as you destroy it.
02:28So we took the larger unit like the crawler.
02:30As the player hits the unit, the unit gets literally eviscerated or destroyed.
02:37And you can actually see the part coming off and see the inside of the unit and all the guts.
02:42Hi, my name is Aram Granger and I blow stuff up on C&C 4.
02:46Really, our direction with the crawler, our art director, Chris Tamburino, said, make it look different.
02:53And so I said, okay.
02:55And we needed to have some more kind of interior detail to the explosions on this.
03:00And we needed to have sort of an inside roiling of the smoke.
03:04Whereas kind of before in other C&C games, you would see particle sprites just kind of disappear when the
03:11particle ended.
03:11And I wanted to get some sort of movement in between the particle's birth and its death.
03:17The crawler itself is, since it's such a big unit, because every time it hits on the crawler system, you
03:23get a different explosion coming out.
03:26Different debris.
03:28And it will go through its death state.
03:31It has a whole nother death animation that Umberto did.
03:34And then its final explosion, final death.
03:36And so that's kind of the big deal about the crawler.
03:38So the crawler functions as not only your base of operations, a large vehicle, but also your war factory and
03:44your personality on the field.
03:45It's a rallying point for everything you do.
03:58It's a rallying point for everything you do.
