00:00Off and on for 20 years, Jerry McGee has been an integral part of The Ventures' music.
00:05Some people call him the Fifth Venture.
00:081967, 68, I was really doing a lot of studio work in Hollywood for like Elvis and the Monkees,
00:15Everly Brothers, John Mayall, Lenny and Bonnie, and I got a call one day from Mel Taylor asking
00:22me if I'd be interested in auditioning for The Ventures, and I said, oh God, The Ventures,
00:26are you kidding me?
00:27So I went down to the audition, tell my guitar, played a couple of songs, accepted me, said
00:33you got the job, and I just couldn't believe it.
00:36You can name any number of instrumentalists or musicians that have got good taste, and
00:42they've got good, they play well, and they've got good choice of material, but they don't
00:47necessarily last or capture the public's imagination the way The Ventures have done, so it's got
00:51to be some unknown quantity, like the magic charisma that's kept them on top for so long.
