00:30...eyes on two riders.
00:32Stay around, police!
00:34You're under arrest against sufficient attempted murder.
00:37Evidence gathered.
00:39Get some tape, I need all the alleyways around the ceiling.
00:42Two very big blades down there.
00:44Wow.
00:45And suspects interrogated face to face.
00:49Tell me your own words, what happened?
00:50There'll be no comment whatsoever.
00:53The mail has kicked and stamped.
00:55Antin, do you remember this?
00:59Can detectives decipher the truth from the lies?
01:02We have to build up the most evidence we can
01:05that this person's committed that crime.
01:08Will the evidence stand or fall?
01:11That's the last time he's alive.
01:13We've blown his defence out of the water.
01:16Yeah.
01:18Fighting crime has never been more challenging.
01:25Can justice be done?
01:28There's always that question,
01:29what if we don't get the charges?
01:31There's always that question, James.
01:42It's emergency.
01:43Hi, um, there's somebody who's...
01:46There's somebody trying to get into my house.
01:47My kids here.
01:49Hear me one second.
01:50Stay with me.
01:51I'm just going to get them on their way.
01:54All right, they are travelling to you, okay?
01:58Have you seen him at all?
01:59Can you give me what he's wearing or anything
02:01just in case you make it off?
02:03He's still in all grey.
02:04How long is the police going to be?
02:05It's just travelling time.
02:06They're coming in as an emergency response.
02:09So he's all in grey.
02:11What's your bills?
02:14Is he big?
02:15Is he light?
02:16It's okay.
02:17Yeah, of course I don't.
02:18He's big bills, okay.
02:21I think he's going to break the door down.
02:25Yeah, he's getting them.
02:26He's broke the window, please.
02:28Stay with me, okay?
02:29Please.
02:30Okay, okay.
02:31Stay with me.
02:32Stay on the phone.
02:33They are coming.
02:35I promise you they are coming, okay?
02:38Oh, I'm not really going to be with you now.
02:40Just travelling time.
02:41Honestly, they'll be with you shortly.
02:45They're coming, I promise.
02:51After receiving reports of a violent attempted break-in,
02:55Gwent Police urgently dispatch officers to the scene.
03:02When they arrive, the attacker has fled
03:05before he could get in the property.
03:09She's confirmed that the mail hasn't actually entered the address.
03:12He's just used a rock to smash the front pane of the window,
03:14but it's double-blading, so it hasn't actually gone through the portal.
03:18Suspect has run off.
03:25The suspect has fled the scene of the break-in
03:27and is believed to be on foot.
03:32Police scour the area, looking for the attacker.
03:36What is the description to do?
03:38He's all in grey.
03:39He's quite a large fill round here.
03:42The suspect could be extremely dangerous,
03:44so police are desperate to catch him.
03:48I'm just behind that chair.
03:50One officer has spotted a man matching his description.
04:18I'm just behind the civics, I'm just an ass.
04:21Get your hands off me, fella.
04:22Get your hands off me now.
04:24Just by the church, I am.
04:26Get your hands off me.
04:26Right, show me your hands.
04:27Don't touch me.
04:28Show me your hands.
04:29You touched me again.
04:30I will keep touching you.
04:31Show me your hands.
04:33I'm touching my personal body.
04:34Right, either show me your hands or I will spray you.
04:36For what?
04:37One or another.
04:38Show me your hands.
04:39Really?
04:39Show me your hands.
04:41Show me your hands.
04:42One, two, three.
04:44You're giving me a lot.
04:46I'm going to get you.
04:47I'm going to get you.
04:53Oh, you're a...
04:55Oh, you're a...
04:57Oh, you're a...
04:58Oh, you're a...
05:01Oh, you're a...
05:02Oh, you're a...
05:03Oh, you're a...
05:03I will...
05:04Oh, you're a...
05:07Police emergency.
05:09Hello, I'm in Olcombran by the shop.
05:12This is one of your gentlemen of the police copper.
05:15He's been beaten by a member of the public.
05:18Where's the streetcar park?
05:19Not at the back.
05:21Okay.
05:22Is the offender still there?
05:23No, he's run off.
05:25He's beaten him up and run off.
05:27With the attacked officer's condition unknown, multiple units rushed to the scene.
05:49They begin the urgent hunt for the suspect.
05:52Do you have to actually be gone in?
05:57While other teams rush to help the assaulted officer.
06:00Showing right on the junction of Commercial Street and Wesley Street on my Raffin.
06:05Mate, it might be down there.
06:08Tube warning is just on the corner by the pub.
06:10We're just in the car front now.
06:13Okay.
06:16The assaulted officer has not responded to radio contact.
06:27Where's...
06:28We're going to be in C-2.
06:30Whoa.
06:31Ah.
06:33Ah.
06:36Oh no.
06:38What's going on?
06:39Hello, Nathan.
06:40Echo and Lens are running.
06:41You're in order.
06:45Oh.
06:47Oh.
06:58After an attempted break-in at a house in south-east Wales,
07:05whilst being arrested, the suspect brutally assaulted a police officer in a sustained attack.
07:16The attacker fled the scene, and an urgent manhunt is under way.
07:23Any available in the cottage channel, they can lead to a local area to coordinate efforts to locate this mail.
07:30Yes, no worries, they're just up to a command right now.
07:342-1 is just on the corner by the pub, we're just in the car park now.
07:38While police desperately try to locate the suspect,
07:42other officers rush to help their injured colleague.
07:55Keep it tight, keep it tight, keep it tight.
07:58There was only one with 3-1, yeah?
08:00Yeah, we're with 3-1 now.
08:02Come with me. Come with me.
08:05Are you all right?
08:09Yeah, of course you are.
08:10Yeah, definitely.
08:12He's seen Nathan that well, has sustained numerous blows to the head and body.
08:16Where about the car?
08:17Where did he go, Nathan?
08:18Where did he go?
08:19Up now, we.
08:19No.
08:24While colleagues assist the injured officer, units from across the force are now hunting for the dangerous suspect.
08:40He's all in green, quite a large fill, round here.
08:45Okay.
08:45No.
08:45I'm going to go down, right?
08:46Yeah.
08:48Alright.
08:52What's happening here?
08:57I'm good at the other side.
09:00You still have to fight, that person is very strong.
09:10I need to have to fight for them.
09:12I need to fight for them.
09:12Is everybody?
09:13No, I need to fight for them.
09:13Well, yeah, no, no, no, no!
09:14At the scene, colleagues continue to help P.C. Atwell.
09:19It's all right, Nath.
09:20Nath, take some time. Take some time.
09:23It's all right. Just breathe. It's all right.
09:25My head is pounding.
09:27It's all right. Did he hit you with anything, Nath?
09:30No, no, no. I went, I went, I went.
09:35I'm looking for an update on the injuries.
09:38I have Alzheimer with the officer now.
09:40Now, he's got quite a nasty laceration to his left eyebrow.
09:44It's bleeding all down his face and his nose.
09:47I'm not sure if his nose is broken at the moment.
09:49And he's got a black right eye.
09:51We're just heading to the hospital now.
09:54At the back of St. Gabriel's church, he's hiding.
09:56He's running at the back of St. Gabriel's church.
09:58Apparently, he's hiding there.
10:00Would you say you missed to St. Gabriel's church?
10:03Apparently, he's hiding there.
10:07Is he in church?
10:10Multiple officers, some armed with tasers,
10:13close in on the location where the suspect is believed to be hiding.
10:21Show me your hands.
10:22Turn around, show me your hands.
10:24Turn around.
10:25Turn around.
10:25Show me your hands.
10:26Do it now.
10:27Show me your hands.
10:28Please do it, Taser.
10:29Turn around.
10:30Turn around.
10:31Turn around for what?
10:31Turn around, show me your hands.
10:33Turn around.
10:34Now.
10:35Obviously, you won't be tasered.
10:36Turn around.
10:37Give me a structure.
10:37Turn around.
10:38Against the wall.
10:39Move against the wall.
10:41He has money back.
10:42All right.
10:43We have him.
10:46You're under arrest for assault emergency work, all right?
10:49Do you have to say anything behind your face?
10:51You don't mention one question.
10:53Anything you do, say make it evidence.
10:56He's fucking on his hand.
10:57You fucking bullshit, mate.
10:59I don't give a fuck.
11:00And?
11:01Come on.
11:02And?
11:02Give me this.
11:04Give me this.
11:04Give me this.
11:05Tell me about that.
11:06Two seconds.
11:07Come on.
11:07What are you doing?
11:08Give me this fucking bunch.
11:09Stop it!
11:10Get on the floor.
11:10Get on the floor.
11:12Get on the floor.
11:13Watch yourself.
11:14Calm this.
11:15Fuck this.
11:16Right.
11:17Just start on me.
11:18I respect my dog.
11:20Anyone got a spec on?
11:21Mrs. Love.
11:22Come here.
11:23Put your hands by the back.
11:24Fucking pussy.
11:26Put it on my face.
11:27I've got asthma.
11:29I don't know what you're doing.
11:31Get off my fucking face.
11:32I can't breathe.
11:34Calm down.
11:35You'll be able to breathe.
11:36Listen, brother.
11:37Take it off my face now.
11:39Fucking putting it on my face.
11:40Fuck.
11:40Take it off my face.
11:42I swear to God, but when I get it, I'm going to put your head in you.
11:45Take it off my face.
11:45Make stomach threats.
11:46I don't give a fuck.
11:48And then when I bash you all up, you know it.
11:51Motherfucker.
11:52Get it off my face now.
11:54Got it.
11:54Someone's on me, man.
11:56Got it.
11:58Got it.
11:59Got it.
11:59Got it.
12:00Two.
12:01One.
12:08Keep going.
12:09Keep going.
12:10It takes seven officers to subdue the violent individual.
12:16Five, two, one.
12:19Take it off my face.
12:23Come on.
12:26Right.
12:28Take off my face, please.
12:29We'll take that some of my face, please.
12:31Right, I'm going to help you in first.
12:32Ready?
12:33Three, two, one.
12:35Take off my face.
12:36Take off my face.
12:37Take off my face.
12:48The suspect was taken into custody, and police had just 24 hours to charge or release him.
13:11The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Richard Nodwell.
13:20He's got 22 offenses for which he's convicted of 12.
13:25And some of them are for assault and emergency worker.
13:29And one of them was in 2023.
13:33Yeah, we got offenses starting back in 2003.
13:35So, when you would have been a juvenile then.
13:38Yeah.
13:38So, obviously, with his bad character, he's a dangerous individual, isn't he?
13:42Yeah.
13:44Richard Nodwell is a significant threat to the public.
13:47He is a violent individual, so we have to safeguard the public from further violence from him.
13:57With Nodwell's history of violence, it was vital that detectives kept him off the streets.
14:04To do this, they needed to secure a charge and remand, which would keep him in custody.
14:10But the clock was ticking.
14:13This is Nathan Atwell's body-worn.
14:16I'm walking.
14:17Show me your hand.
14:18Show me your hand.
14:20Reviewing the body-worn footage was key to understanding the series of events leading up to and during the attack.
14:27So, this is where Nathan's opt-in now because he's matching the description.
14:31Don't touch me.
14:32Show me.
14:33Just stay there.
14:33Show me.
14:33Touch me.
14:34Show me your hand.
14:35Don't touch me, mate.
14:36You know what I'm saying?
14:36Still being, still being, yeah, still being quite aggressive, yeah.
14:39Don't touch me at all.
14:40It is important to make sure that as much evidence is gathered in the early stages to ensure there's no
14:48further avenues for that individual to say that he wasn't or she wasn't responsible for that crime.
14:53Don't touch me at all.
14:55Get your hands off me, please.
14:56I'm just behind the civics.
14:57You can see from the start that he...
14:58He's really agitated, isn't he?
15:00Get your hands off me now.
15:02He looks really angry and aggressive.
15:05Right, show me your hands.
15:05Don't touch me.
15:07Show me your hands.
15:08He's not showing his hands, so Nathan doesn't know what he's got to put on his back.
15:12He's not listening to Nathan's instructions.
15:14He's back and forth and he's getting more and more.
15:17More agitated, isn't he?
15:18Show me your hands.
15:19Cut off, get off me.
15:21Shut up.
15:23You've just got a flurry of punches there until he gets to the ground very quickly and then just carries
15:30on with his punches.
15:31And then they took two kicks there then.
15:34And so anyway, that's towards the road then, isn't it?
15:37Yeah.
15:40Looking at the body-worn footage, it is shocking.
15:42It's upsetting as well.
15:44Just the sound of it, the nature of the attack, the extreme brutality of it.
15:50I've been in the police for 26 years and I've never seen such an assault on a police officer before.
15:55This instance was very, very serious given that in Grand Police it's so rare for this to happen,
15:59if a police officer had been severely assaulted in the line of their duty.
16:03It was quite shocking, not only for Nathan's colleagues, but obviously for members of the public as well.
16:08Show me your hands.
16:09Show me your hands.
16:10Turn around.
16:11Show me your hands.
16:12So the officer's going up now.
16:14This is where they've got him on stop now.
16:15Come on, come on.
16:16Come on, stop it.
16:19He's still aggressive as well, isn't he?
16:21Really aggressive.
16:22Really aggressive.
16:23So this is being restrained now.
16:25Really, really difficult for the officer.
16:26It's really difficult because at least two of them he further assaulted.
16:29One's been spat on and one's been bitten.
16:31Yeah.
16:32Where's my face?
16:33Because then gets a spit-hood head.
16:36I'm asking my dad for my face now.
16:38But he can breathe through it.
16:39That's what he's designed for.
16:41Get off my fucking face!
16:43Richard Nodwell is a big man.
16:45He's created quite a strong individual as well,
16:47given when we've looked at how many officers it took to restrain him
16:50when he was, you know, resisting arrest and shouting abuse at officers.
16:54So you see that, and you see sometimes the risks that officers have got to take
16:58when they obviously go out and try and arrest individuals.
17:03Something throughout the day or the evening has riled him.
17:07Something that's triggered him.
17:11In order to build a watertight case for the CPS,
17:15detectives decided to trace the suspect's movements.
17:19We set out a CCTV strategy around the area to try and trace Richard Nodwell's routes
17:24prior to the assault on Nathan Atwell.
17:31Response officers were sent on a CCTV draw in and around the local area.
17:38CCTV can be really important to us because it can show us suspect's movements,
17:45what their demeanor is like,
17:47and what they're actually doing before this incident took place.
17:53Officers visited the scene of the attack.
17:57So, the pub up there, CCTV on it.
18:00We've got the flats around here.
18:03That would have been a good place to check as well.
18:07The suspect's made his way up this alleyway by here onto the main roads.
18:11Yeah.
18:15And then ultimately he's gone up here behind the church.
18:19There's not a lot of CCTV or anything here, is there?
18:23There's no sign saying anything.
18:26There's nothing else covering this area.
18:29There were no CCTV cameras covering the location of the attack.
18:35There's another pub there.
18:37It does have CCTV.
18:38Yeah, I can see a camera up there.
18:40Officers checked a pub near the scene.
18:45Well, they've got a sign saying there's CCTV, isn't it?
18:48Yeah, there's a camera up there, there's one up there, there's one up there.
18:52So, it's good coverage of it.
18:54There's plenty of cameras there, isn't it?
19:01The CCTV was retrieved from the pub.
19:06And detectives reviewed it.
19:09Yeah, there he is walking in.
19:12It provided them with a positive sighting of Nodwell.
19:19And on the second clip, then, we can see him sitting down.
19:24He's with this guy, because this guy is obviously sitting there.
19:27And we're assuming he's with this girl, because this girl is actually talking to them and they're all chatting.
19:32She seems very unsteady on her feet as well, and intoxicated.
19:37And then he walks out, she walks out.
19:40Both of them, you can see, are quite, they look intoxicated.
19:44And then outside, something has gone on.
19:48She's shouting.
19:55She's shouting across towards him, then, by here.
20:00She'll go out into the middle of the road now and stop the traffic.
20:09She's screaming and shouting, look.
20:11She's really, really annoyed.
20:14Yeah.
20:15And then he follows her across.
20:17He's stumbling, look.
20:20They're obviously connected in some way.
20:22Yeah.
20:23And there's something going on here that is out of sight of the camera.
20:27Yeah.
20:27But you can just see their legs for their look.
20:32According to this CCTV, the clock on here is 14.18, when he comes out of the pub.
20:38Yeah.
20:39The call comes in to us then at 15.35.
20:42Yeah.
20:42And that's the damage to the window.
20:46And then, yes, it's 15.49 that Nathan comes across him.
20:51Yeah.
20:52So, something's happened here, even though he's staggering.
20:56This doesn't show anything aggressive about him or anything, does it?
21:00No.
21:01It just paints a picture of where he's been beforehand.
21:03And I felt he has been drinking.
21:05Yeah.
21:05Yeah.
21:06But clearly, there's something happening there that we can't see.
21:09Yeah.
21:11The CCTV was a dead end for us.
21:14It does show the suspect in a pub.
21:17It does show him intoxicated.
21:19It does show that there is something going on between him and a female.
21:24But the aggression is from the female and it's not from him.
21:27But it still didn't give us any idea as to why he would have assaulted Nathan in the way he
21:33has.
21:36Police cannot interview suspects when they are under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
21:42With the custody clock ticking, detectives faced an anxious wait for Nodwell to sober up.
22:01After an attempted break-in at a property in South East Wales, a Gwent police officer was brutally assaulted whilst
22:09trying to arrest the suspect.
22:18It took a team of officers to subdue the violent individual and bring him into custody.
22:27He's got 22 offences and he's got markers for violence as well.
22:33Right.
22:33Yeah, we got offences starting back in 2003, so he would have been a juvenile then.
22:39He's a dangerous individual. He's a violent individual.
22:42Police were desperate to prevent Richard Nodwell from getting back on the streets.
22:46But time was running out on the custody clock.
22:49And they couldn't interview him until he sobered up.
23:04In order to secure the maximum possible charge for the assault, detectives examined the extent of P.C. Atwell's injuries.
23:14So you can see there he's got a cut to his head, which he had eight stitches to that.
23:20Yeah.
23:21And then we go on to his face. So that's the left side of his face.
23:25So there we've got the break to the left eye socket.
23:31And we've got the break to the left cheekbone.
23:33Yeah.
23:35And his left eye was stitched, which I think is by there.
23:38And that's the front view.
23:41Yeah.
23:42So his right eye, that's just black, isn't it?
23:45It's quite significant, isn't it?
23:46Yeah.
23:49It's a great deal, but grievous bodily harm.
23:51Yeah.
23:53Nasty injuries to be looking at, aren't they?
23:57Due to the severity of the attack, detectives aimed for a charge of grievous bodily harm, which can result in
24:03a sentence of up to life imprisonment.
24:07The level of injuries that was caused to Nathan was significant.
24:10And physically and mentally, that is obviously going to affect him.
24:17The assault is something that he's always going to have to cope with.
24:20I don't think it's such an assault you would ever really get over.
24:25PC Atwell's attack sent shockwaves across the force.
24:36Every serious assault of a police officer is immediately referred to the chief constable.
24:42Nathan was subjected to an absolutely unprovoked attack.
24:48I was taken aback by the significant physical injuries that he had.
24:54Policing is a job that comes with some risk.
24:57And I think, you know, what we've seen here is true evidence of that.
25:01You know, our officers go to calls every single day of the year and deal with individuals who are dangerous
25:08to the public.
25:10They run towards that danger as opposed to away from it.
25:16Now, unfortunately, attacks have been incredibly on the increase over recent times.
25:21There's been a 21% increase of assaults on emergency service workers over the last 12 months.
25:28In fact, that's now up to 52 assaults a month.
25:31My concern is that incidents like this, unfortunately, you know, with assaults being on the rise against emergency workers,
25:38might actually affect people's thought processes about applying the police force.
25:44Now, if that happens, that's a real problem.
25:47Because if we haven't got those people volunteering from their communities to protect their communities,
25:53then individuals like Nodwell might not well be restrained and might be out at liberty to conduct violent acts like
26:01this.
26:02It's absolutely essential for us to get violent offenders like Nodwell off the streets.
26:07They are a real risk to the wider community, but also a real risk to emergency service workers,
26:14because they have no regard for the law.
26:17And the way that he dealt with Nathar just shows the type of individual he is.
26:32To keep Nodwell off the streets, detectives not only had to secure a charge,
26:37but also convinced the CPS that he was too dangerous to be released on bail whilst awaiting trial.
26:45It's really important that we get as much as we can out of the investigation and the interview,
26:51and we want to make sure that those type of people who will assault our officers are taken off the
26:58streets.
27:06Nodwell finally sobered up and was fit for interview.
27:10But how did he react when confronted with the evidence against him?
27:15The mission when officers, detectives go into the interviews is to find out the truth.
27:19They're going to establish the truth, to find out what has happened, why it has happened,
27:24and if there's anything to mitigate what has happened.
27:32We're an interviewer at a strip-medic police station.
27:35The time is 14.30.
27:37Can you please state your full name and date of birth?
27:39Richard Thomas, I'm not setting it out until I get examined.
27:41Thank you very much.
27:42Just regarding welfare, is there any reason why you should not be interviewed at this time?
27:46No.
27:46Is there any effect of any drug drug?
27:47No.
27:48Any medication you need?
27:49No.
27:49No.
27:50The reason for the interview is because you've been arrested for causing grievous bodily harm
27:53with intent to PC 2517 at well, but also two further counts of assaulting emergency workers.
27:59Are you responsible for causing serious injury to the level of grievous bodily harm?
28:03I'm just going to say I'm going to be making no comment whatsoever.
28:07That's it.
28:07I'm not going to sue anything at all.
28:09Absolutely.
28:09Bye.
28:10So, are you responsible for causing injuries to the level of GBH grievous bodily harm with intent to PC 2517
28:16at well on the 20th of December 2024?
28:22So, tell me what happened, your vision of events, from the moment you woke up to the point of your
28:27arrest.
28:27Tell me in your own words what happened.
28:32Did you go to the halfway pub?
28:37How long were you there for?
28:41Is there anything else that happened in the pub while you were there?
28:47What time did you leave the brother?
28:52Where did you go after you left?
28:56It can be very frustrating when a suspect doesn't speak.
29:00It's the suspect's right to not say anything in an interview.
29:03It could be that he'd sobered up a bit and he realised the consequences of his actions.
29:12Nodwell refused to answer the initial questions, but does he break his silence when challenged with the evidence?
29:19This is the body of all exhibit NA01 of PC 2517.
29:27Show me your hand.
29:29Show me your hand.
29:30Show me your hand.
29:31You don't touch me.
29:36Show me.
29:37Just stay there.
29:37Show me.
29:38Show me your hand.
29:39Don't touch me, mate.
29:39You know what I'm saying?
29:41You don't touch me, mate.
29:42You don't touch me, mate.
29:43You don't touch me, mate.
29:43You don't touch me, mate.
29:43You don't touch me, mate.
29:45In response to the body-worn footage, Nodwell closes his eyes, refusing to watch.
29:52What exactly was the officer doing towards him?
29:54Show me your hands.
29:55You don't touch me, mate.
29:56Either show me your hands or I will spray you.
29:59Did you comply with his commands?
30:01Maybe.
30:01Show me your hands.
30:03Show me your hands.
30:04Come on, man.
30:08How many times did you punch him?
30:11What was your intention when you punched him to the face?
30:17When the officer was on the floor, did you continue punching him?
30:25So can you tell me why you continued to punch him?
30:30Fuck you, motherfucker.
30:39For over five minutes, Nodwell's eyes remained closed.
30:52Are there any comments you'd like to become a body-worn footage of Ritchie?
30:57Ritchie.
31:00When the body-worn footage was played to Nodwell, he didn't want to look at it.
31:04There was a shift in his body language, in the way he was, and he did close his eyes and
31:09not look at it.
31:10That could be because he felt guilty for what he'd done.
31:13It could be because he was shocked at what he'd done.
31:15Or it could be that he just didn't care.
31:18He's been taken to the hospital, and he outlines the injuries he's sustained.
31:25Several broken bones in his nose, a fractured eye socket, and a fractured cheekbone.
31:29He's also received a cut to the back of his head, and a cut to his cheek, which requires eight
31:34stitches altogether.
31:38Now that those were injured, the photograph's taken at the scene.
31:44Did you cause those injuries to the officer?
31:51Oh, just quickly.
31:52How does it make you feel to see all these injuries now?
31:58Is there anything you'd like to clarify at all?
32:00We can go back through any part of it, any questions you'd like to clarify, and this is your opportunity
32:04now.
32:04Is there anything you'd like to touch on again?
32:07In that case, then, the time is 14.59, and I will stop the recording.
32:14With Nodwell refusing to speak throughout the interview, and with just hours left on the custody clock,
32:21police needed to decide on the next steps.
32:25He was shown body-worn, he was shown the pictures, didn't look at him.
32:30Absolutely zero from him, nothing.
32:32No lines of inquiries whatsoever.
32:35Didn't give us anyone or anything to go and look at,
32:38so there was nothing further for us to investigate, other than what we already have.
32:45For Richard Nodwell not to answer any questions and remain silent during the interview,
32:50shows just the type of individual he is, that there's no remorse, no explanation for his behaviour.
32:58As time was running out for the detectives, they had to submit the case file to the CPS.
33:05So as far as charges now for Nodwell, the initial disturbance didn't go anywhere.
33:12We've got no complaint.
33:15We've got the grievous bodily harm for Nathan, and then we've got assault emergency worker times two.
33:21So that's one for the spitting, and one for the biting of the officer.
33:25And all three of those were captured on body-worn.
33:30It's what we call a red case, so we're looking for an immediate decision on the charges for Richard Nodwell.
33:38The evidence that was sent to the CPS was the body-worn footage of the assault on Nathan.
33:46The arrest of the suspect.
33:48Stop it!
33:51And the body-worn footage of the assaults on the two other officers.
33:55Come on, come on.
33:58Get off my face now!
34:00There's always that element of the question, what if we don't get the charges?
34:04Are we going to have to bail that person then to get further evidence and put conditions on?
34:09Police had to await a decision.
34:12Will the CPS agree with the charges and remand the dangerous suspect in custody?
34:17Or will Nodwell be let back out on the streets?
34:33A Gwent police officer was brutally attacked in broad daylight.
34:37Show me your hand, Mr. Taser!
34:40Turn around!
34:41And a violent suspect arrested and taken into custody.
34:45Motherfucker!
34:46Get off my face now!
34:50Detectives try to piece together the circumstances surrounding the attack.
34:55Even I'm staggering.
34:57This doesn't show anything aggressive about him or anything, does it?
35:01No.
35:01Clearly there's something happening there that we can't see.
35:04Yeah.
35:06Good job.
35:06The suspect, Richard Nodwell, did not cooperate.
35:11So, tell me, your mother, what happened?
35:13I'm just going to say I'm going to be making no comment whatsoever.
35:17OK.
35:17That's it.
35:17I'm not sure anything at all.
35:19Yeah.
35:20With no more leads, the police took the case to the Crown Prosecution Service.
35:25The initial disturbance, we've got no complaint.
35:28We've got a grievous bodily harm for Nathan.
35:30Yeah.
35:30And then we've got assault emergency worker times two.
35:33They had to wait for a charging decision and to find out if they had met the threshold
35:38for Richard Nodwell to be remanded in custody.
35:46PC Nathan Nodwell was assaulted whilst working alone, a practice that is now commonplace in
35:53forces across England and Wales.
35:57When attacks like this occur, it's critical that police review procedures.
36:02Matthew, OK?
36:03Oh, hey, boss.
36:04You OK?
36:05Yeah, good, good.
36:05Nice to meet you.
36:06DCI Dave Morris met with Matthew Candy, chair of the Police Federation, to discuss the incident.
36:17It's just terrible, isn't it?
36:19This is really traumatic.
36:23With Nathan and with the officers who attended the scene and the incident, they've all had
36:28trauma referrals put in.
36:30I know that their well-being team visited them on the night in both separate stations
36:34and the following day to see if they needed any other support.
36:39The Police Federation is the body, the only staff association that can represent rank-and-file
36:45police officers.
36:46Our role is to do most of the negotiating with the senior officer team in the force.
36:52How do we go about, how do the force go about reassuring these officers and their team and
36:57stuff after watching that, that coming to work is a safe place to be?
37:02You just want as much mitigation in place as possible, whether it's more tasers, more firearms
37:08officers, and more double crewing if need be.
37:13Yeah.
37:14But we appreciate as a federation, it isn't simple against a backdrop of money and forced finances
37:22and things, shifts of struggling with staffing, that just the viability of having double crewed
37:29at all times is just not there.
37:34There's always going to be some frustration that this could happen again.
37:38We know this is a dangerous job, we sign up knowing full well the risks, but this still
37:45has to be suitable mitigation and if things like double crewing, extra taser officers, more
37:50firearms officers, more officers in general are the options, then they are the things that
37:55are the force that the government in the UK need to really, really stress upon.
37:59But hopefully, you know, assaults of this nature are so rare that they just don't continue
38:05to happen on a level that means we have to change everything.
38:11The detective's priority was to keep Nodwell off the streets.
38:21But what did the Crown Prosecution Service decide?
38:26CPS came back, charged with a grievous part of the harm, charged with the two assaults times
38:31emergency worker.
38:35The officers are really happy with that outcome, Nathan was happy with it, as well as the two
38:41officers who were also assaulted.
38:44The CPS also agreed that Richard Nodwell was a dangerous individual and should be remanded
38:50in custody whilst awaiting trial.
38:53It's really important that we get somebody who is capable of this level of assault, whether
38:59it be on a police officer or a member of the public.
39:02to get them off the streets.
39:06The team secured the charges, but their work wasn't finished.
39:10They then prepared the case for trial.
39:14In this case, there was overwhelming evidence for the pretrial hearing, and we're hoping that
39:21at that stage, he will plead guilty.
39:24An early guilty plea is the outcome detectives hoped for.
39:28That will stop us having to get a jury involved, it will stop Nathan having to go to court, because
39:34it wouldn't be very nice for Nathan to have to go to court and sit through watching everything
39:39that has happened to him.
39:52On the day of the incident, this is the route I took.
39:57The pursuit of the court is a trial, and the law i have to take care of the crime.
40:03Can i take care of the police car?
40:14Ardwell?
40:16coming down that path here, so I have parked my police car here.
40:26Yeah, it's a bit weird. I haven't been back here since,
40:29and, yeah, it's a bit...
40:35..like, overwhelming, to be honest.
40:37Just that, you know, like, knowing that's where it happened.
40:41Yeah.
40:43When it first happened, I did think about Nodwell
40:47and what he had done to me,
40:48and I hated the fact that he made me feel like that
40:53and done that to me.
41:04So this is the way I came.
41:05As I was just coming by here, I could obviously still see Nodwell here,
41:09and he started saying to me,
41:11what you effing stopping me for?
41:13What you effing stopping me for?
41:15I've made my way in here.
41:16Nodwell have started making his way down.
41:19And we've come to this spot here.
41:23And that's when the interaction started taking place.
41:29I was trying to ask him to show me his hands,
41:32because he wouldn't show me his hands at all.
41:35And then he started moving towards me,
41:37so I've just popped my arm out and just said,
41:39just stay back from me.
41:41He's then gone to say, like, don't touch me.
41:43And with that, that's where the assault started taking place.
41:49I can remember just getting up on the wall,
41:53and I can remember having my head on the wall like this,
41:56and there was just blood just dripping down.
42:01It just brings it back.
42:03He didn't have to react the way he did,
42:05but he did,
42:08and that's why, obviously, he is where he is today.
42:13We only come to work to do a job and protect the public,
42:17and sometimes it feels like that's against us.
42:22I'll stay in the police now till I retire
42:23is something which I love,
42:26so I can't imagine me going anywhere else now.
42:30I would never let this incident stop me
42:33from doing the job that I love.
42:34As I said, at first,
42:36it was always playing on my mind,
42:38and would I go back?
42:40In the end, I didn't want to give him
42:43that satisfaction of me not doing something
42:46which I loved any more.
43:05The suspect has gone to court, and he has pleaded guilty,
43:09which is a good result,
43:10because that stops Nathan having to go through a trial,
43:13and it stops us having to have a jury there as well.
43:17Richard Nodwell is now in custody.
43:19He doesn't pretend any further harm to members of the public
43:21or to other police officers.
43:23I'm really proud of all the officers
43:25and how hard they actually worked
43:27to get this case through to the CPS
43:30and in the custody time limit
43:32to get a charge in remand on Nodwell
43:36and to have that result for Nathan so quickly.
43:43It's really good to see Nathan back in the station.
43:45It's really good for his colleagues
43:46to see him back in work.
43:48He's been the victim of a really, really significant assault,
43:50and he's thriving.
43:52But also what it shows to his colleagues
43:53that he's not going to allow such a violent assault
43:56to beat him, and he's going to crack on it
43:58and do what he enjoys.
44:01Ah, hello.
44:03You all right?
44:03Are you okay?
44:04Yeah.
44:04What's your thoughts on sentencing then, Nick?
44:07Yeah, I was really happy with the sentencing, to be honest,
44:09because I was always worried, oh, when we got there,
44:12would he not have a prison sentence?
44:14And I just think, as we say,
44:17if you do something like that,
44:19you've got to kind of suffer the consequences.
44:21We've come through it.
44:22He got a good sentence.
44:24And justice was done.
44:55You've got the rumors.
