00:00I just can't believe you've phoned.
00:02400?
00:02Tampons in a gay man's house.
00:04Well, this will be an awkward conversation.
00:06We all hold on to stuff that we just don't need.
00:10It's one of our kids' belly button clamps.
00:13Stop it.
00:14So me and the gang are coming for your clutter.
00:17It's a room of doom.
00:19Oh, my word.
00:21We're emptying chock-a-block homes
00:25and laying out every single item.
00:28Oh, my God!
00:29Wow.
00:31I can't speak.
00:32Could you part with half?
00:34That doesn't seem fair.
00:35That's non-negotiable.
00:36This is such a great start.
00:38To transform your home...
00:40Goodbye, world!
00:42...and let the joy back in.
00:45I'm speechless.
00:47Wow!
00:48Oh, my!
00:49That is going to change our lives.
00:51It's the best thing in the world.
00:53Mission accomplished.
01:01Right, come on, you.
01:03Back to work.
01:04Oh, it's good to be back, eh?
01:05Yes, it is, man.
01:07I'm so excited for this.
01:08And starting in Scotland.
01:10I know, right?
01:10But I would walk 500 miles
01:14And I would walk 500 more...
01:21Team Silo are back,
01:24reuniting on Scotland's east coast
01:26and ready to help a family in Fife.
01:30Here we are.
01:31Is this it?
01:32Yeah, yeah.
01:32Oh, cool.
01:33Yeah!
01:34Yay!
01:35Yay!
01:36Bring it in, girlie.
01:37Bring it in.
01:38Oh, my gosh.
01:39Missed you lot.
01:40Missed you too.
01:42It's good to be back.
01:43Very happy.
01:44This is good.
01:45So, this is Gerry and Trish's house.
01:49They've got three adult children,
01:50two of which still live at home
01:51and one's just around the corner.
01:54Gerry had to retire for health reasons,
01:55but Trish and the kids all work shift work
01:57and keeping on top of the clutter is impossible.
02:01That's where we come in.
02:02Good to go.
02:03Ready.
02:03Ready.
02:04Shall we get in there?
02:04Yeah.
02:04Let's not waste any time.
02:06The King's family home has four bedrooms,
02:09an open-plan kitchen diner
02:11and a living room.
02:13Oh!
02:14I can see toilet roll.
02:15I can see cat food.
02:16There's a dryer down here.
02:18Utility slash hallway.
02:19Excuse the mess,
02:20the children are making memories.
02:21What?
02:22Yeah, yeah.
02:23Remember on the kids.
02:24Wow, okay.
02:27Okay.
02:28It's busy in here.
02:29Oh, look at the family photos.
02:32Oh.
02:33This is full.
02:34It feels like this counter here
02:35is just where they come in and chuck whatever.
02:38There is a lot of posts and letters.
02:40There's so many little trinkets.
02:43Emma's hen do.
02:44Lots of knick-knacks, my favourite.
02:46Oh, you'll love this, Dilly.
02:47It's a teacup with stones in it.
02:48Was there a plant in there?
02:49There used to be.
02:50It's dead now.
02:51Why?
02:52They're so sentimental.
02:53Look at this, the family tree.
02:55Oh.
02:55At least all the pens are in the pen box.
02:57I'm just putting them the right way round.
02:59There's a lot of arts and crafts around here.
03:01More than just arts and crafts.
03:02This is an artist.
03:04Wow.
03:04Look at this.
03:06Oh, Robert.
03:08I just organised those, Rob.
03:10We've only been back together for ten minutes.
03:11Bickering already, guys.
03:13Come on.
03:13Sorry, Dilly.
03:13Come on, let's keep going, gang.
03:15The kitchen diner is joined to a living area.
03:18Toys down here.
03:20I think there's some babysitting happening in this house.
03:22Oh, my God, look.
03:24Gerald King.
03:25Is that him?
03:26They're the kings, yeah.
03:27This is his.
03:28Oh, wow.
03:28It's got, like, poems in it and stuff.
03:29He's a poet.
03:30I do feel like you can tell already they're a really warm family.
03:34There's just, yeah, a lot going on.
03:37I'm feeling this.
03:38There's a DIYer in the building.
03:40Right.
03:40Day one, people.
03:41Yeah, one.
03:42Don't lose the energy now.
03:44Rob and Ewan check out the rest of the ground floor.
03:47Oh, bedroom.
03:47Hello.
03:48Bedroom down here.
03:49This is rather organised, this room.
03:51OK, we've got some emergency gravy under the bed.
03:54That's always handy.
03:55Emergency gravy.
03:56I'm here for this guy.
03:58I know, right?
03:59I'm liking this room.
04:01But upstairs, the master bedroom is less of a sanctuary.
04:05OK.
04:06OK.
04:07Oh, God.
04:08This feels a bit like a storage room with a bed in the middle.
04:11This is a memory box.
04:14This is the box you put it in.
04:16Look, memories.
04:17But the memories are in this box.
04:19These are mortuary and kits.
04:20Oh, I mean, what are you doing?
04:22You're getting out of bed and thinking, right, let's fix that wall, finally.
04:25Why is there a mallet in the bedroom?
04:29Downstairs, Ewan and Rob are finding more signs of home improvement in progress.
04:33Some DIY has definitely gone on here.
04:35You wouldn't normally have plumbing for a washing machine right here in a house.
04:38This looks like a project that was not quite finished.
04:41There's cupboards beyond this.
04:42But you're not going to get to them with the dryer being here.
04:44You have to do this.
04:45Oh, Ewan, Ewan, I don't want to lose you.
04:47Ah!
04:49Can you just lower me down a bit further?
04:51Look, go on, go on, go on.
04:52Not too far.
04:53I've got you.
04:53Look.
04:54Oh, these are some...
04:55Oh, photos.
04:56Hold my legs.
04:57Ewan, you're not light, you know.
04:59Oh.
05:00Well, this is definitely the daughter's room.
05:01Isn't it?
05:02Back upstairs, there's signs of some DIY success.
05:06I like the shelves.
05:08That looks organised to me.
05:09But then this is a bit of a situation.
05:12Under-ear dilly.
05:13Yeah.
05:13I mean, if this is not the sign of a 20-year-old rosé in your room...
05:18Half bottle.
05:19Jeepers creepers.
05:21Outside, there's a pleasant surprise.
05:23Everything that should be in a shed is in the shed.
05:25This is one of the first times we've seen a shed that is actually being used as a shed.
05:30Well, that was interesting.
05:32Wow.
05:32No matter how much stuff is in there, there is so much love in that house.
05:36Yeah.
05:36Their little trinkets, their memories, their photos.
05:39It's just a shame when they're put next to the paint rollers and the...
05:41And the two-hulls.
05:43There's a lot of different things.
05:43It kind of takes the lovey-dove-ness out of it.
05:45All next to each other.
05:46Yeah.
05:46There is literally not one system anywhere, is there?
05:49Oh, well, we've got our work cut out first, Kate.
05:51Mm-hmm.
05:51Oh, yes.
05:51Oh, oh, I'm hearing voices.
05:53Yay!
05:53Oh, my God!
05:55Yay!
05:55Oh, look, you're back too.
05:58Hi, family.
05:59Hi!
06:00Oh, hello!
06:01We've been sneaking around the house, having a little look.
06:04Who's the DIYer?
06:06Mum.
06:06Your tools are everywhere.
06:08Everywhere.
06:08You see these beautiful photo albums and then a mallet.
06:11Yay!
06:12I actually wondered where that was.
06:13Under your bed.
06:14Excellent.
06:15So, usually we would ask that you let go of at least 50% of everything that's in the house.
06:21Bye.
06:22Bye!
06:23Bye!
06:25Perfect!
06:26See you later.
06:27Bye!
06:28Hi!
06:29Hello!
06:31Trish and Gerry have been married for almost 30 years, despite an unlikely start.
06:37When I first met Trish, she didn't like me.
06:39I was a bony boulder and a bouncer and a kissy dram.
06:44He had nothing on apart from, like, a leopard print thong, I think you would describe it.
06:53He completely loved himself and I thought, yeah, you're not really for me.
07:00He kind of chased me back and forth for a wee while and he's a nice guy.
07:05He made me laugh.
07:06So, I wasn't?
07:06Uh-huh.
07:07Years ago.
07:08Yeah, yeah.
07:09Gerald is really fun and vibrant.
07:13Originally, my first dream was to be a pop star.
07:15I played in a number of bands when I was younger, but that just wasn't going to happen.
07:19So, I was always good at drawing and I wanted to be a cartoonist.
07:22He loves art.
07:24He loves to draw.
07:25Trish is very kind and generous.
07:28We're stronger together.
07:29There you go.
07:30Mm-hmm.
07:31The couple still live in their very first home, where they brought up their three now adult children.
07:37Growing up, we never had very much, but we never really noticed because my mum and my dad would give
07:44you the last pound out of their pocket if they could.
07:49When the kids were young, we couldn't really afford much.
07:52So, we used to apply for the son's £9.50 holidays and there was, like, caravan holidays all over the
07:57UK.
07:58The way we raised our kids, it wasn't about spending money.
08:03It was about spending time with them and making sure that they had the best life that we could give
08:07them.
08:08Two of their three kids still live at home, but it's more than four fully grown adults filling the house.
08:15Mum, why is there a screwdriver set in the bedroom's room?
08:19So many people come in and out of the house and they all leave things and the cupboards get fuller
08:24and fuller until eventually you've got no cupboard space to put it in.
08:28For God's sake.
08:30I always used to think that Trish was the messiest.
08:32Because even when we first met, you'd see a trail of clothes from the front door to the bedroom.
08:37But I think nowadays it's me that's the messiest one.
08:42Managing their full house has become harder since a life-changing diagnosis.
08:47At the beginning, I thought I was just getting older. You tend to forget things.
08:50Yeah, I had to check him really into going to the doctors because he wouldn't accept that there was anything
08:56wrong.
08:56At the age of 55, after 18 months of poking and prudence, I was diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer's disease.
09:05Within weeks of the diagnosis, I was retired through ill health.
09:09I also had to hand in my driving licence and that was a huge loss.
09:14That's all my independence gone.
09:16At the age that he was, you never expect that it's going to be dementia.
09:19Kieran, you seen the TV remote?
09:22He picks things up and he puts things and we're not allowed to move anything.
09:25Where would he have put it?
09:29I know where everything is.
09:31Well, I maybe don't remember a few hours later, but yeah.
09:34Or the bin.
09:35I'm not bin raking.
09:37We banter a lot about you forgetting stuff.
09:40I think that's what helps everybody cope.
09:43It's my choice this time.
09:44You play rubbish.
09:45You play rubbish.
09:46The house has always been full of laughter and full of life and full of love.
09:54I just need the house to be more organised and safer for Gerald.
09:59This is the time to do it because I think if we were doing it any later, he wouldn't be
10:04able to cope with any change.
10:08Right, we know that this process is a really important one.
10:13So you don't have to let go of half the kids, but definitely half the clutter.
10:17Do you feel ready for that?
10:18Yes, absolutely.
10:19Well, let's just get on with it.
10:21Ready?
10:22Yes, let's go.
10:23Come on.
10:25We've got 12 hours to completely empty the King's home.
10:29We've got packing to do.
10:30Yeah, boy.
10:31Let's do this.
10:32And I'm helping Trish pack up hers and Jerry's memory-filled bedroom.
10:36Oh, Trish, are you excited to do this?
10:38I am super excited, yeah.
10:40How do you relax in here, Trish?
10:42I don't relax much at all.
10:45So you're, are you a nurse?
10:46No, I am a care worker.
10:48What are your shifts usually like?
10:50I do day shifts and back shifts.
10:52Oh, blimey.
10:53Yeah.
10:53Trish, there is so much sentimental stuff that I keep packing away.
10:56You have kids and you sort of try and keep on top of everything.
11:00And then since his diagnosis, I don't know what to throw out
11:03because I don't know what he's going to need to prompt a memory.
11:07We won't let go of anything that you feel is going to bring happiness to Gerald
11:11as things progress.
11:13Although, to be fair, probably we do need to be forced to...
11:16Denise, that's her job.
11:18That's where she comes in.
11:19Let's go in here and pack up this room.
11:24We've taken as much advice as possible from experts
11:26because with Gerry's diagnosis,
11:29we know that he might struggle to make decisions really quickly.
11:32So we're just going to go at his pace.
11:34We're going to follow his lead and just be completely led by him.
11:38Oh, so you sit there.
11:39I'll start this up, yeah.
11:39I'm going to start putting in all the arts and crafts.
11:42He's got the most incredible support from Trish, the kids,
11:45so I feel like together we are going to get this done.
11:48When do you think you last sat at the table together?
11:50A good maybe year, a couple of years.
11:52How have you found living in the house as it is?
11:54It's been quite difficult, actually.
11:56Yeah.
11:56Because my dementia affects my visual awareness.
11:59I can't judge distances.
12:00Mm-hm.
12:01And there's so much junk.
12:02I've fallen over a few times.
12:04OK.
12:04I do attempt to try and make tea.
12:06Yeah.
12:06But the last attempt was a coffee chicken casserole.
12:10What? It's coffee chicken casserole?
12:11Instead of using gravy granules, I use coffee granules.
12:15And I didn't realise until I was actually serving it up.
12:17Oh, my gosh.
12:18And it was disgusting.
12:19Oh, bless you.
12:22I have now been living with dementia for seven years.
12:27Unfortunately, probably over the last year or so,
12:29things are starting to progress.
12:30It's not just my memory.
12:32It's all my abilities I've lost or I'm losing.
12:35If anything was even done in the house or the garden,
12:38it was me that would do it.
12:39Any heavy lifting, I would be right in there.
12:42No problems whatsoever.
12:43Now I'm lucky if I can lift a knife and fork, like, again.
12:47It's been very frustrating.
12:49And what is this big bit of wood?
12:51It's my piece of wood.
12:53It's your piece of wood?
12:54Yes.
12:55I always wanted a bit like a big chopping board.
12:57Just needs a good clean, doesn't it?
12:59I think so, yeah.
12:59Don't tell Trish that.
13:00Don't tell Trish that.
13:01She's hoping to get thrown out.
13:04So what have you done to the house since you got here?
13:06I built these.
13:07Shelves and things.
13:09Gerald used to do a lot of it.
13:10He can't now, so I kind of started taking over and found I really, really enjoyed it.
13:15What does life look like now for Gerry with his dementia?
13:20He's getting worse and he needs a peaceful house.
13:23You know, his brain can't shut off because there's so much stuff.
13:27It's like sensory overload.
13:29Yeah.
13:29It's just everywhere.
13:31The clutter in the house really upsets me.
13:33And I think the DIY is my way of trying to make it better.
13:39Clearly it does not make it better.
13:41It just gives us more places to hide things until it doesn't.
13:46Oh, my Lord.
13:47I hate that it's got like this.
13:49And I hate that I've let it get like this.
13:51This is all down to me.
13:53This is my fault.
13:54I should be able to have a nice house.
13:59It shouldn't be hard.
14:03I just need to do better.
14:05I just feel like a failure.
14:07You're not a failure.
14:08To be fair.
14:08No, I am.
14:09This is not failing.
14:11This is a really difficult situation to manage on an emotional level, let alone a physical level.
14:16You're still working as a carer, caring for your grandkids, your children, caring for your husband, then coming home and
14:23trying to do all your DIY.
14:24I'm feeling it there.
14:25No, I'm not failing.
14:26Look at your wardrobe.
14:27Look at the wardrobe.
14:28You're smashing it.
14:29We can't just go in all guns blazing and say, you don't need that, you don't need that, let it
14:34go, because there'll be sentimental items in this house that Trish and the kids think will trigger memories for Jerry
14:43in the future.
14:45And we're just going to try and lean into what Jerry thinks is going to help him moving forward.
14:50An anti-fatigue daily motion.
14:53Just in case.
14:55You never know.
14:56You might get fatigued.
14:57Such a hardworking person that I am.
14:59Halfway through and this family are flying.
15:01We're getting through it.
15:02That's what I like to see.
15:03Come on.
15:04I forgot how easy it is to pack up a house when you're dealing with five adults.
15:10I think this is pyjamas.
15:11I've seen pink, it's no mine.
15:14Hopefully no breakable within there.
15:17They know that this is essential, otherwise dad's not going to be able to manage in this situation, so they're
15:23just cracking on.
15:24Right, come on, Steph.
15:26Let's do it.
15:27Do you love living at home?
15:28Yeah, I absolutely love living at home.
15:31Like, it's just so joyful.
15:33I honestly regret moving out.
15:35I don't think I'll be moving out anytime soon anyway.
15:37Just with, like, helping with mum and helping with dad.
15:41Oh, yeah.
15:42And, like, it makes me happy knowing that I can be there to help them.
15:46The worst that my dad's obviously getting, the more challenging it is for my mum.
15:50I'd rather make things easier for her.
15:53I've got a responsibility of being here and helping out.
16:00Because at the end of the day, he's looked after me growing up for my life.
16:04Now it's my turn to do it for him.
16:06And I would never not do that.
16:09Do you have your friends in there, over?
16:11Not very often, obviously, with the more clutter.
16:14And because, obviously, I don't go out as much anymore to look after my dad,
16:18it would be nicer to have people here.
16:21Come over.
16:21Yeah.
16:22And you just feel like you can't.
16:23No, it just gets a bit too much sometimes, I think.
16:28Here, put that with the umbilical cords.
16:32No, it's not. It's a sandwich bag.
16:33It's a clamp. It's a belly button clamp.
16:34It's not.
16:35You're holding one of her kids' belly buttons.
16:37Stop it.
16:37Stop it.
16:38Catch!
16:39Oh, you're fucked up.
16:41Just an hour left to get every single item out of the house.
16:45I'm going, woo!
16:48Look at that stuff in the van.
16:50I don't know if I can reach.
16:51Oh, there they go.
16:58Oh, my God.
16:59What an echo.
17:00Oh, my God.
17:02It looks huge.
17:03I could actually cook.
17:05Where's my block of wood?
17:07Oh, no.
17:09My block of wood's gone.
17:14Well, we said, how are we feeling?
17:16I am nervous.
17:17You're nervous?
17:18Yeah.
17:19I've got nervous belly.
17:20I need a nervous poo.
17:23Stephanie!
17:24Hi!
17:25Hello!
17:26This is the Scottish summer I was expecting.
17:29Hello!
17:30Hi, darling.
17:31Do you know what?
17:31Let's save the hugs for inside.
17:33I am really excited.
17:35Are you?
17:36This is like the moment of truth now.
17:38Here we go.
17:40Oh, my God.
17:43How does that all fatten the house?
17:46Welcome home.
17:47Out of the 350 boxes unpacked from the King's home, we counted 1,296 greetings cards, 762 knick-knacks, and
18:01106 electronic instruction manuals.
18:07Why do you think you have held on to so many things?
18:10Memory stuff, I think, is hard for me.
18:13And more recently, I struggled to know what to get rid of because I don't want Gerald to lose that
18:19memory.
18:19We don't want you to feel like you're losing.
18:21Yeah.
18:21In fact, what we want to do is bring you back your life and bring you back space and time,
18:27which are more important than the stuff.
18:28I mean, you had something like 762 trinkets, like, and 33 of which were pigs.
18:36Oh, yeah.
18:37Yeah.
18:38That's you.
18:38Yeah.
18:39I collected some.
18:39More on earth.
18:41Because they were cute.
18:42Right.
18:43Do you all feel prepared?
18:44Do you all feel ready?
18:45Yeah.
18:45Absolutely, yes.
18:46To the kitchen!
18:47Let's go.
18:48Let's go.
18:49Let's go.
18:50We counted 112 random items on the King's Kitchen Island, so I'm kicking off the salt in the heart of
18:57this family's home.
19:01This is your kitchen island.
19:04None of this belongs on a kitchen island.
19:07No, absolutely.
19:08So anything you want to keep, you've got to try and find the sections it lives in and then let
19:12go of the rest.
19:13Yeah.
19:14Well, that's broken, so that can get put in the bin.
19:16I fixed that.
19:17What, with a bit of tape?
19:18It's a fixed.
19:19But, yeah, that can go in the bin.
19:21Oh.
19:21Is this, like, from...
19:23That was from the wedding.
19:24So you're keeping this?
19:25Yeah.
19:25Are this weird flower pot?
19:26My mum and dad brought me that back from their holiday.
19:29Children's stories?
19:30Yeah, that was mum's.
19:31And dad's?
19:32And we used that to read to the kids at night.
19:34These?
19:35Oh, my God, you found it!
19:37That was a Christmas present from my dad and I couldn't find it.
19:40It was right in front of you.
19:41Mum keeps hold of everything.
19:44I mean, she's got stuff from her birth.
19:47Old photos, old bears just stored in boxes in the attic and under the stairs.
19:52She's got teeth, hair.
19:54Yeah, some of the stuff that she's kept is wild.
19:57She's one of those people that take their placenta on.
20:02What was the dream for your kitchen island?
20:04It would be completely empty and we could chat and have cups of tea.
20:08Did that ever happen?
20:10Never once.
20:11Because he put that big old solid disgusting block of wood at it.
20:15What about wood?
20:17It's ginormous.
20:19Repulsive.
20:20I'm pretty sure that can go.
20:21Every now and again I sand it down because it's mouldy.
20:24I just thought it looked fantastic on the end of the kitchen bunker.
20:28But that's been the bane of my life since it went up there.
20:30It's all mouldy.
20:31Yeah, yeah.
20:32It's all you can pour.
20:34OK, it can go.
20:35Yeah!
20:38Well done.
20:39We need to get a move on, so while the kids sort through the perishables...
20:43I suppose I can let go of my wine.
20:45..I need Gerry and Trish to get cracking with the crockery.
20:48There's over 50 mugs here.
20:50I think we can definitely reduce it down to 16.
20:53Right, let's go.
20:54So if we keep the ones...
20:56I think we should keep the set.
20:58I'm going to keep them for soup, I think.
21:00So how many is that?
21:01Three, six.
21:02Mum.
21:03What?
21:04Are you keeping these?
21:05So we use them a lot, eh?
21:07They're nice ones.
21:08I think they're all finding it more difficult than they thought,
21:11especially Trish.
21:12Keep that one.
21:13I think Gerry's nervous about letting something go
21:17and then forgetting he's letting it go.
21:19But if Gerry wants to bring something home, it comes home.
21:22They can definitely go.
21:23But I think he's actually quite ruthless.
21:26That one can go.
21:27This one.
21:28Trish, she is very sentimental and nervous to let go of absolutely everything,
21:33even if Gerry's like, I don't even know what that is.
21:36Stay safe.
21:37Yeah?
21:37If something's like a soup bowl rather than a mug.
21:42All right, so get rid of some of the regular mugs and keep your soup mugs.
21:45That doesn't seem fair.
21:47Are you finding this difficult?
21:49I am.
21:49That's ridiculous.
21:50It's not ridiculous.
21:51Just tell me why.
21:53So my friend gave me that.
21:54But you never drink out of it?
21:55No.
21:56You need to have space in your house so that you can have a cup of tea.
21:59Exactly.
22:00One day that'll happen.
22:01If you can let go of enough, you will have your space.
22:05This is from Edinburgh Christmas Market.
22:07Are you keeping that one?
22:08No.
22:09Oh, well done.
22:11Right, that could go out because nobody uses that.
22:13Right, that can go out.
22:15Edinburgh Science Festival.
22:16That can go.
22:18That could go out.
22:20Yeah.
22:21This has been a long time coming, actually.
22:23Yeah.
22:24That's all chipped.
22:26Will you get the other one then, Dan?
22:28Well done.
22:28Aye.
22:28Well, go on, muscles.
22:29Right, let's go down to the piles, guys.
22:32Gerry, don't forget your wood slab.
22:34Oh, my wood?
22:35Yeah.
22:36Do you reckon we sell this or donate it?
22:39Do you think someone else will?
22:39Donate it.
22:40Some of mine.
22:41I don't think anybody's going to be grateful for that.
22:43You never know.
22:47Hello.
22:48In the King's Kitchen, the team have plans to keep the space permanently clear.
22:54Gerry said everything is a trip hazard for me.
22:56It needs some really clever storage so that all of those arts and crafts, things can go away.
23:01Did you just say craft?
23:03Are you feeling all right this morning?
23:05I know.
23:05Maybe it's the sun.
23:06No, yeah, I think she is.
23:06Have you got sunstroke?
23:08I just love Gerry and he loves crafts, so I'm all about just giving him storage.
23:13What I'm thinking is to build a massive storage unit, but incorporating Gerry's artwork.
23:20How?
23:20You know sliding screen?
23:21Yeah.
23:22Well, how about this whole sliding piece be the area for his artwork?
23:26Oh, nice.
23:27Oh, nice.
23:27Okay.
23:28And that there will keep this entire space neat and tidy.
23:31Lovely.
23:32That's what we want.
23:33With four days to pull off his big build, Rob is straight on the tools.
23:38So, I'm making the first part to the living room unit, the base.
23:44Just like when you're building a house, if your foundation isn't right, then everything
23:49else in the house is going to be off.
23:51Once all my screws are in, I'll be able to take it inside and fit it.
23:58Oh, boy.
24:04I'd like to see you as doing some work, thank you very much.
24:07It's mid-morning at the warehouse and amateur artist Gerry has a job to do in the stationary
24:12section.
24:13How many pins do we need?
24:15Just a couple, really.
24:16Three brand new packs of pencils, which one do you prefer?
24:19We'll keep that one.
24:20When did you get into art?
24:22Primary school.
24:23Yeah.
24:24I wanted to be a cartoonist, actually, when I left.
24:26So, is that how you ended up in architecture?
24:27Yeah, because it was still something to do with drawing again, which is what I loved.
24:30Oh, I love that.
24:31So, you've got to turn your passion into your job.
24:33Yeah.
24:34So, have you drawn everything clear?
24:36I have, yes.
24:36Wow.
24:37This itself is with a group, and we write all our own original soundtracks.
24:43Oh, cool.
24:43Yeah, yeah.
24:44And we've got two albums out just now, and that's a cover.
24:46You're incredible, Gerry.
24:48Not at all.
24:49Yeah, you are.
24:50Do you want to keep any of these?
24:51I don't even know where that's come from, to be honest.
24:53And that's the sad thing, is you don't remember half the stuff.
24:56What was it like when you first found out about having Alzheimer's?
24:59Like most people, you think that Alzheimer's is an all-person's disease.
25:05You don't think that people that young can be affected by it.
25:09But I've met people in their 40s.
25:11When you first got told it was Alzheimer's, what did that feel like?
25:14I was all right, I think.
25:16But the world totally changed.
25:18Yeah.
25:18I had to retire from work.
25:21I had to surrender my driving licence.
25:23Your whole life just changed overnight.
25:25Yeah, like that.
25:25But I got into poetry through the dementia.
25:28It's my thoughts and my hopes, some dreams.
25:30It's also my medication.
25:32It lets me put down on paper how I feel about my dementia
25:35and what it feels like to live with dementia.
25:37And now that's another form of therapy.
25:39Yeah, that's what I find, yeah.
25:40I think it's very important to be involved in things like art, poetry, writing, things like that.
25:47It keeps my brain stimulated.
25:49I'm convinced it slows down the progress of the Alzheimer's.
25:53I enjoy my heart.
25:54I would love to leave it as a kind of a legacy for my wife and my children
26:01so they can remember me for who I was, not who I'm going to be.
26:09What's this one?
26:09This is a poem that I wrote for Trish.
26:12Has Trish ever heard it?
26:13No.
26:13You should tell her it.
26:14Babes?
26:15Yes?
26:15Want to come over a minute?
26:16Oh, okay.
26:18This is a wee poem.
26:19I've had a wee time to have a look at it.
26:21So I've...
26:23Oh, Lord.
26:24It's so romantic.
26:25I cup your heart as if my own
26:28to carry you wherever I go.
26:31There's no place I'd rather be
26:33than here with you, just with me.
26:35Aw.
26:36Unfold your wings, my angel on earth.
26:39Embrace me with the warmth of your love.
26:41My own sweet angel sent from the high
26:43to comfort me when I stumble and cry.
26:46There you go.
26:47Aw.
26:48How was that?
26:48Was that right?
26:49Aw, that's lovely.
26:52It was beautiful.
26:54Yeah, it can be a little romantic sometimes, I think.
26:56And it's special because
26:59he writes these things down
27:02but he doesn't say them.
27:04So we find out more about how he's feeling about things
27:08when we read his poems
27:09than we ever do
27:11with him telling us
27:13how he's feeling about things.
27:15So it is, it's really, it's really special.
27:17Pad looks like it's seen better days.
27:20Okay, so they can go.
27:21And then I think...
27:22Gerry?
27:23Yes, we're there.
27:24We're done.
27:25You're so happy.
27:27The team are mid-bedroom swap at the King's
27:30and the biggest room is now up for grabs.
27:33Steph's long-term plans are to look after Dad.
27:35Okay.
27:35So I feel like we need to give her the biggest space.
27:38She's in her 20s, you know.
27:39Yeah.
27:39She wants to have pre-drinks here.
27:41She wants to have parties.
27:41We could almost give her two spaces in here.
27:43Exactly.
27:43It could be sort of bedroom
27:44and then something a bit more entertainment vibes.
27:46I'm excited for this room.
27:48I can't wait to have a little toast with her
27:49at the end of it with a bottle of rosette.
27:51Oh, I'm sure you're ready for that.
27:53This is going to be a fab pad.
27:56Cheers, cheers.
27:56Come on, Mum.
27:57Cheers, cheers, cheers, cheers.
28:01Yes, it's done.
28:03In the memorabilia section...
28:05Do you want any of your birthday cards?
28:07No.
28:08No.
28:08That was amazing.
28:09While it's proving easy to let go of some family heirlooms...
28:13Steph, do you want your umbilical cord clear?
28:15Absolutely not. Get rid of that.
28:16There's somebody's tooth in there.
28:17You want it?
28:18No, it's fine.
28:19Others are prompting more treasured memories.
28:22Anniversary cards?
28:23Maybe we'd keep one or two.
28:24What do you do for your anniversary?
28:26I sing to her every year.
28:27What do you sing?
28:29Darling, happy anniversary.
28:33Another year of love has gone by.
28:36I think I'll know when he doesn't sing that, that I've lost him.
28:40That'll be when I know he's gone.
28:43Gerald is the most amazing husband.
28:46He's not perfect, neither am I.
28:48And I think that's why we work.
28:50But our relationship's definitely changed.
28:54Definitely, definitely changed.
28:55As things progress, I'm sure he'll forget who I am.
29:01I mean, you just never know.
29:02With dementia, I mean, he could wake up tomorrow and not know who we are.
29:09You just don't know.
29:11And I feel sad, I think.
29:15Sad for him.
29:17And sad for me, but sad for him.
29:20Do these help you, Gerry?
29:22Like, if you look at these, do they trigger a memory?
29:25Not really, actually.
29:26I don't feel like I used to feel.
29:28Yeah.
29:29It's just the outside was taking bits and pieces away like I can, so, you know.
29:33But is it helpful to have these things around?
29:35I like the photo albums.
29:36Yeah.
29:36I'll keep them.
29:38I married Trish for Trish.
29:39I didn't marry Trish so she could become my carer.
29:42We're still really close.
29:44But romance-wise, it's probably, there isn't much there,
29:47because the dementia has taken my feelings away.
29:52I try to be as supportive as I can with Trisha
29:57and with my children.
29:59So that part of me hasn't gone yet, like, which is great.
30:03Hi, baby.
30:04Hey.
30:04I was always quite an extrovert,
30:06got on really well with people,
30:09and that's going to be changing sometime in the future.
30:12And I'll be unrecognisable as a person.
30:15The guy that she married was hot to trot, like, yeah, we were young.
30:21And I'm not the same man Trish married, that's for sure.
30:28Who's that?
30:29That's Kieran.
30:29Is it?
30:30Yeah.
30:30You're a wee cutie.
30:32You need to have these accessible.
30:33Yeah.
30:34Oh, God.
30:34Oh, Lord.
30:37I was not ready for that.
30:40I can't even look at it.
30:41I can't even look at it.
30:43I'm never going to get you out with suspenders on my head now.
30:45Oh, God.
30:48Speeding through the third and final section of the day.
30:52You don't need all these drill bits and sets.
30:54No.
30:55You only need one pair of pliers.
30:57Yeah.
30:57We're knocking Trish's DIY section on the head.
31:00Maybe all the manuals can go, yeah?
31:02And racing towards the finish line.
31:05We have got 15 minutes till they shut the doors on this warehouse.
31:09I feel like we really need to get as much in those piles as possible.
31:13Let's do it.
31:13Let's go, go, go, go, go.
31:15Oh, God, here we go.
31:18Come on.
31:18Come on.
31:19Can I just hear?
31:21Some of the teddy bears.
31:22Yeah.
31:23Stephanie, that was from when, um...
31:27Get ready.
31:28All right, two minutes, family.
31:32Jerry?
31:33I think that can go as well, yes?
31:34Go, go, go, go.
31:38Come on, girls.
31:40Last job.
31:42Everyone, to the pile, to the pile.
31:44Well done.
31:45Yay!
31:48Well done, buddy.
31:50Day one in the warehouse is done.
31:52I really enjoyed today.
31:54I think they all know the importance of doing this process right now,
31:57and it has to be done.
31:59We have to get back to that house with 50% less, if we can,
32:03and change their lives.
32:09Day two in the warehouse.
32:12And while the King family are in full clear-out mode...
32:16You spending my test shoes for it?
32:17Because you've got loads.
32:19...Dilly's entered the building.
32:21Good morning, everybody.
32:24Oh, no!
32:25Run!
32:25And she is not mucking about.
32:28First of all, we are going to start with clothes.
32:31Everyone has too many clothes.
32:33Now, you only had about a metre each of hanging.
32:37So, this is what you've got...
32:39Right.
32:40...to hang your clothes on.
32:41OK.
32:41At least try and get it.
32:43God loves a try-er.
32:44God loves a try-er.
32:46God loves a try-er.
32:48Keep.
32:49Keep that.
32:50That's just new.
32:51So, yeah.
32:52I'll keep that, because I wear it as a jammie top.
32:55Yeah?
32:55I've got my Benidorm top.
32:57Are we keeping the Benidorm top?
32:59I do love it.
33:00If you love it, then it stays.
33:02We're going again this year, so...
33:03Are you?
33:04Oh, my gosh.
33:04It was that good.
33:05Yeah, it's amazing.
33:07I've never actually wore them, ever.
33:09Oh, why?
33:10I didn't really like them on.
33:12So, why didn't you return them?
33:13I'm a bargain hunter when it comes to all this stuff,
33:15so I'll buy all in the sales,
33:16and then I put them on my vintage.
33:18But you need to get in the habit of trying to sell it
33:19while it's still got, you know, newer tags.
33:22Was this sequin number staying or going?
33:24Well, that was my 21st birthday dress.
33:26OK.
33:27But I would get rid of it.
33:28You're not going to wear it again?
33:29I won't wear it again.
33:30OK.
33:30Right, donate.
33:31That can donate.
33:33Donate.
33:33Don't like them.
33:34Is this your rail, Jerry?
33:36This is my rail, yes.
33:36I mean, look at this number.
33:38That's cool, isn't it?
33:39That is a jacket, isn't it?
33:41And a half.
33:42I bought that for Stephanie's 21st birthday.
33:45Do you not think it fits me?
33:47Yeah.
33:47I'll tell you what will go with this.
33:48My winkle pickers.
33:49We know I love a bit of leopard print.
33:52They're brilliant, aren't they?
33:53I feel like the penguins.
33:56Oh, my God.
33:59I can't even walk properly in them.
34:04Dilly might be larking about,
34:05but at the Kings,
34:06it's all work and no play
34:08with the living room build.
34:10Here's the first section of the big mega unit.
34:14In order to make sure I get these all lined up,
34:16top nice and flush,
34:18I'm clamping them up.
34:19And once I have this base
34:21all screwed into position,
34:23level all off beautifully,
34:25that's when I can then build up.
34:30If you haven't got any household lubricant,
34:33which is the best thing to use for your hinges,
34:35the alternative is to use some cooking oil.
34:39So I've got some olive oil here
34:40and I'm using this little pipette
34:42and what we want to do
34:43is give the hinge
34:44a quick wipe
34:45just to remove any dust
34:48and then we want to get this oil
34:49into the hinge
34:51so we can slowly move it
34:53as we drop
34:55some of the oil
34:57into the moving parts
34:59and give it a little wiggle
35:01and there we go.
35:02The squeaking has gone.
35:08At the warehouse,
35:09the penguins vanished
35:10and Delia's back.
35:12There is a lot of fun
35:13happening in this warehouse.
35:15Too much fun.
35:15And not enough sorting.
35:17Ready to rattle through Gerry's records.
35:19How often do you listen to those?
35:20Never.
35:21We don't have a record player.
35:22I would be quite happy to donate them.
35:24If you sold them all as a collection,
35:26the money you get from that,
35:27you might be able to put to charity.
35:28Yeah, that'd be good.
35:29That'd be good.
35:30And turn our attention
35:31to Trish's knick-knacks.
35:33One of the things
35:34that sometimes make me
35:35a little bit itchy
35:36are the amount of trinkets
35:37that people have in their house.
35:39And I think you had
35:43762 trinkets.
35:44I mean, what is this?
35:46That's Elvis.
35:47Elvis the pig.
35:48I got that one when I was pregnant.
35:49So these pigs are staying.
35:51Yep.
35:51Do we need a Benidorm boat?
35:53That could go for sure.
35:55What about these?
35:56For me,
35:56they all have a memory behind them.
35:58OK, what's the memories?
35:59Gerald's bought me them
36:00on anniversaries.
36:01That was when Stephanie was born.
36:03That was when we had
36:04both of the boys.
36:05Mm-hm.
36:06I think my mum bought me that one.
36:07So I would like to keep some.
36:09That one can go...
36:11That one I'd like to keep
36:12because I quite like that one.
36:13This one's staying?
36:14Yeah.
36:15I don't know if I'm keeping it
36:16because I'm just being sentimental or...
36:17What do you feel
36:18when you look at that?
36:20Peaceful.
36:20It reminds me of us two hugging.
36:23Oh.
36:23And he doesn't really hug me
36:24very much, so no.
36:26Really?
36:26Do you miss that?
36:27Yeah.
36:28He does sometimes,
36:29but it's, you know,
36:30he doesn't.
36:31And do you think that's
36:32because of his illness?
36:33Yeah, before that,
36:34he was really tactile
36:35and, you know,
36:36we would sit together
36:37and he'd cuddle me in,
36:38but now it's kind of a forced thing.
36:41Can I give you a hug?
36:43I know it's not,
36:43Gerard hug.
36:45They say that dementia
36:46is like Christmas lights.
36:48You know, when you bring
36:48your Christmas lights
36:49out of the box.
36:50So you never know
36:51which lights are going to be on.
36:53I miss Gerald's affection most.
36:56He used to be, like, cuddly
36:59and he doesn't really reach
37:00for my hand anymore.
37:02He's lost that.
37:04Are you OK?
37:05Yeah, OK, yeah.
37:06Good.
37:07Doing all right.
37:09A thousand losses
37:11when you're a partner
37:11of somebody with dementia.
37:13We lose him
37:15in a different way
37:18every day.
37:19It's a lot to get used to,
37:20isn't it?
37:21Mm-hmm.
37:21I know, but I've had years
37:22to get used to it, so.
37:23I know, but still,
37:24it's also that reminder,
37:25isn't it, that things have changed?
37:27Yeah.
37:27They change every day, so.
37:29Mm.
37:29And how are you coping with it?
37:31You just do.
37:32Yeah.
37:33You just have to.
37:34You don't really have a choice.
37:35Mm.
37:36So long as he's happy,
37:37then that's fine,
37:38because he's the one
37:39that's living with it.
37:40Yeah.
37:41You've got a good support network
37:42around you?
37:43I have a group of my people.
37:45Good.
37:46Well, it's important.
37:48So with that.
37:49Yeah.
37:50I feel like we should keep that.
37:52I think we should keep that.
37:52That's a good one.
37:53Yeah.
37:53We'll keep those.
37:54We'll reduce the other little bits.
37:56OK.
37:57Life's changed for Trish.
37:58The guy that she married
37:59is now changing.
38:00And so I think that must be
38:01impossibly hard.
38:02And those conversations
38:03stem from what you may deem
38:05as a silly little ornament.
38:06We have to make sure
38:07that we're keeping the things
38:08that do mean something.
38:09But yes, we're letting go
38:10of the Elvis the pig,
38:12for example.
38:12Do we definitely need
38:14all these candles?
38:15They can go.
38:15Right.
38:16Ma'am, what's a tornado scrub?
38:18It could go out.
38:19It's rubbish.
38:20That can go.
38:21That can go.
38:22That can go.
38:23I've never used them for years.
38:25A ceramic and induction hob
38:29hygienizer.
38:29I don't even know what that is.
38:31There they are.
38:35Final five minutes.
38:36This is your last chance
38:38to go through this whole warehouse.
38:40That's an old one.
38:41Well, do you need it?
38:42No, not really.
38:43That can go.
38:44That can go, yeah.
38:46Let's go.
38:53I need to get back to the jam.
38:59That's it.
39:00Well done.
39:00Oh, I'm good.
39:01Go, go, go, go.
39:02Last 30 seconds.
39:05Let's go.
39:06Let's get it on the piles.
39:08Quickly.
39:08Great.
39:09Are you?
39:11Well done.
39:11Put it out.
39:12Come on.
39:13Oh, well done.
39:14Good job.
39:15Well done, team.
39:16Well done.
39:17After two long days
39:19at the warehouse,
39:20the family have managed
39:21to reduce a massive
39:22two-thirds of their belongings.
39:25Well done, you.
39:27Well done.
39:29You all right?
39:30Yeah.
39:37Ah.
39:38It is 9am
39:39and we need to get
39:40the king's possessions
39:41back in the house.
39:42This is looking good.
39:44Isn't it?
39:44How does it feel in here?
39:46I had such a good warehouse day.
39:49You really do appreciate
39:50adult children.
39:52Extra muscle.
39:53We are at such a crucial time
39:55in this family's life
39:56that we have got
39:57to get this right.
39:58Right.
39:58All right, let's do this, guys.
39:59Let's get cracking.
40:00Come on.
40:01Rob, your tools are everywhere.
40:02What, because I'm still working, aren't I?
40:04First up, Rob's in the entranceway
40:06reconfiguring the family's utility.
40:09Yes, this is an unconventional place
40:12for a utility room,
40:14but Gerry needed an accessible toilet,
40:16so they had to move the utility room
40:18from that side out here,
40:20but you really couldn't store much.
40:21Yeah, I think the one thing
40:23I need to do is strengthen this up.
40:25Because of its age,
40:26all of this has come a bit loose,
40:27so just reinforcing it
40:29before I go and put everything back.
40:34Just like that,
40:35it's back in place.
40:37Simple.
40:38Upstairs, I'm bringing some bling
40:40to Steph's new long-term lodgings.
40:42This little alcove,
40:43to me, screams bar.
40:46Steph and have fun with her friends
40:48up here and get ready to go out.
40:50One last finishing touch.
40:52These are just really simple,
40:54cheap LED strips.
40:56It's as bright as a Benadon strip,
40:57I reckon.
40:58Move the bit of sticky back,
41:00and then I'm just going to go
41:01and follow the alcove.
41:04Ready?
41:08Benadon time, baby!
41:10Woo!
41:11Downstairs, Ewan's got a bright idea.
41:14Gerry's told me that with his Alzheimer's,
41:17he can struggle with his spatial awareness,
41:19and now that we've moved the bedroom
41:21down to the ground floor here,
41:23there's the bathroom
41:24that he'll have access to
41:26just across the corridor.
41:27So, I've picked up some of these
41:29motion-activated lights.
41:31They have a little magnet
41:32that's peel and stick.
41:34So I'm going to pop the magnet
41:35on like this,
41:36and then this will come on
41:38automatically to help Gerry
41:39find his way to the toilet
41:41in the evening time.
41:43Outside, Rob's got an artistic take
41:45for his living room unit.
41:47This panel is the bit
41:49of the pièce de résistance.
41:51Not only is it the sliding panel
41:53that hides everything,
41:55but it also doubles as a display
41:57for one of Gerry's amazing bits of artwork.
42:00I'm having to stick two pieces together
42:01because they just don't make sheets that wide.
42:05To keep Steph's clothes shopping passion in check,
42:09Dilly's creating a clever sorting system.
42:12What I thought is,
42:13I'll grab one of these drawstring bags,
42:14and I'll leave that by the front door
42:16so Steph reminds herself
42:18every time she walks out the door,
42:19she's got to return those things.
42:21You know, when you buy something,
42:23if it doesn't fit, return it.
42:24If you don't like it, return it.
42:26But as well as having that drop bag,
42:28what you need is a clear plastic file
42:30to keep our receipts in.
42:31It's always worth taking a quick snap of it
42:34just in case you lose that.
42:35Snap it before we stash it.
42:39The family let go of so much in the warehouse
42:41that I got soft
42:42and I fished out a beloved item
42:44from the donate pile.
42:46I rescued Gerry's wood from the pile
42:48because he loved it so much.
42:51Instead of being a useless training board,
42:54I'm going to turn this into a letter ledge
42:56and Gerry can forever keep
42:57his random piece of wood.
42:59It's a little bit too rustic
43:01for my liking at the moment,
43:02so I'm going to sand it down
43:05because then I can get all the, like,
43:07tea stains and really deep marks off.
43:10Now I've got these little file holders
43:13that I'm going to attach them
43:14to the underside of this shelf
43:16and the letters will go inside.
43:18You either file it
43:19because it's an important document,
43:20shred it because it's a piece of junk
43:22or action it.
43:27OK, you ready for this?
43:30Ta-da!
43:30Ta-da!
43:32File it, shred it,
43:34action it.
43:36In this family,
43:37they've got as many pets
43:38as they have humans,
43:40so I want to differentiate
43:43their sponges
43:44and a really simple way
43:45you can do this
43:46is to cut your sponges
43:48into different shapes.
43:50There we go.
43:51You need to trim a bit off.
43:52We have bone for the dog's bowl,
43:55fish for the cat's bowl,
43:57regular rectangles
43:58for human bowls.
44:00It's good, isn't it?
44:01What are you doing?
44:02I'm cutting these sponges
44:04into shapes.
44:05Don't look at me like that.
44:07Mate, you have got
44:08way too much time on your hands.
44:10This is essential.
44:11I'm sure I...
44:11We need to prioritise
44:12the fur babies.
44:13I can't entertain this.
44:15This guy!
44:16Do you like it?
44:17Meow.
44:20I am creating
44:21these lovely
44:22little labels
44:24that I'm going to put
44:25on every single cupboard,
44:26every single container.
44:27I've put a bit of a
44:29striped board around this
44:30because I just think
44:30it highlights it
44:31a little bit more
44:32and hopefully that will
44:33help Jerry.
44:34Oh God,
44:35I haven't put an S on the end.
44:36Come to this box
44:37for some spice.
44:39Outside,
44:39I'm organising
44:40a unique retreat
44:41for Trish.
44:42When most people
44:44think sanctuary,
44:45they think spa.
44:46But when I was
44:47talking to Trish,
44:48she told me
44:49when she does DIY,
44:50she finds it
44:51really relaxing,
44:53really therapeutic.
44:54So I thought,
44:55that's it.
44:55We need to make
44:56a DIY den.
44:58Pig balls come
44:59with little attachments
45:00that you can add
45:01to the holes
45:02inside the board.
45:04And then,
45:04you have got
45:06a tub for all your spanners,
45:09somewhere to hang
45:09your hammer.
45:10Gonna cover
45:11the walls in these
45:12so I can hang
45:13all of Trish's tools up
45:14and she can get to them
45:15any time she needs.
45:19Oh,
45:19there you are.
45:21And where's Stacey?
45:22Stacey!
45:23Come on, girl.
45:24Come, come, quick.
45:25I feel like
45:25I haven't seen
45:26any of you all day
45:27because I've just
45:27had my head down
45:28trying to get stuff done.
45:29So I have just
45:30been to pick up
45:31some photos
45:32which I had printed.
45:34Oh,
45:34these are our photos
45:35with Jerry.
45:36Oh, cute.
45:37And I thought
45:38we could do
45:38a little scrapbook.
45:40Nice.
45:40Oh, my God,
45:40I did not
45:41picture you
45:42as a scrapbook girl,
45:43Dilly.
45:43That's because I'm not.
45:44So there you go.
45:45You're not going to be
45:46a scrapbook.
45:46You said that,
45:47don't.
45:48Why can't you
45:48make the scrapbook?
45:49You've done so well.
45:50You're ahead.
45:51We're ahead
45:51for now
45:52but this is the time
45:53of day
45:54when we relax into it
45:55and we start
45:56slowing down.
45:56We cannot
45:57lose the pace.
45:58Yes, I'll do
45:58your scrapbook.
45:59Am I happy about it?
46:00No.
46:01Right, hurry up.
46:01Keep up the pace.
46:02Let's go.
46:06She tasked me with it
46:07like it's
46:08a piece of cake
46:09and it's not.
46:10I want it to be
46:11in order.
46:11I want to label them.
46:12A scrapbook is something
46:13you spend years making.
46:16Jerry told Dilly
46:17that photos really
46:18help him with his memory
46:20so hopefully
46:21he'll always remember
46:22this process.
46:23Oh, look at that.
46:24I mean, it's not
46:25my best work
46:25but I'm giving it
46:27a good go.
46:27They're going to love
46:28this, all these
46:28memories.
46:29I love this family.
46:31I love this family too.
46:34With the living room
46:35unit fully constructed.
46:37I'm just fitting
46:38the track system
46:40for the sliding artwork
46:42that's going to run
46:42across the face
46:43of this unit.
46:44And a super-sized
46:45replica of Jerry's
46:46poem painted and dried.
46:48A piece of artwork
46:49that's on this sliding
46:50panel is inspired
46:51by Jerry's artwork.
46:53Rob's vision is
46:54sliding into place.
46:56This is the part
46:57of the build
46:57I was most worried
46:58about.
46:59Yes, you've got
47:00tons of storage
47:01out here but this
47:02here is what makes
47:03this unit unique.
47:06I'm proud of this.
47:07Woo!
47:09Next door,
47:10I'm sorting the lighting
47:11in the brand new
47:11master bedroom.
47:13Trish and Jerry
47:14really wanted to move
47:15to the downstairs room
47:16where Daniel was
47:17but they'd never
47:18gotten around to it
47:19so we flipped the rooms
47:22and now I am
47:25putting some
47:26floating lampshades
47:27here.
47:28These little screws
47:29are always a bit
47:29fiddly but
47:31okay.
47:33Make sure I'm
47:34all lined up.
47:35Oh no.
47:38Why do they have to be
47:39the smallest screws
47:40in the world?
47:42So now it's the easy
47:44bit.
47:44Put the lampshade on,
47:46screw the light bulb
47:47in,
47:48it bobs your uncle.
47:48Now let them be
47:50light.
47:54In the newly
47:55completed utility,
47:57Ewan strikes
47:57while the iron's
47:58hot.
47:59When irons build up
48:01a scorch mark like
48:02this,
48:02I've got a really
48:03good little trick.
48:05This packet of
48:06paracetamol cost me
48:07only 39p.
48:09You want the iron
48:10hot enough that it
48:11melts the paracetamol
48:12tablet and then using
48:13a pair of tweezers,
48:15I'm going to gently
48:16rub it over the
48:17scorch mark.
48:18The active
48:19ingredients in the
48:20paracetamol are
48:21combining with the
48:23scorch mark to lift it
48:25off and remove it
48:26without doing any
48:27damage.
48:28Look at that.
48:29It's kind of acting
48:30like a little baby
48:31rubber and then using a
48:32damp cloth, I'm just
48:33going to quickly wipe
48:35off anything that's
48:36loosened as I go.
48:38I'm delighted with
48:39that.
48:39Look at it.
48:40Certainly cheaper than
48:40buying a brand new
48:41iron.
48:42As Rob puts the
48:43final touches to the
48:44living room unit.
48:45My drawer fronts are
48:46on, I'll put the
48:47handles on, three more
48:50to go.
48:50And Ewan perfects the

50:27with sleek storage
50:28and hidden functions.

50:32Behind this lovely curtain
50:33is your washing machine
50:36and tumble dryer
50:36so you can hide it
50:38when you don't want to see it.
50:39That's amazing.
50:40Steph, I know you love
50:41online shopping.
50:42Yeah.
50:43This is for returns.

50:46your returns in there,
50:47shove your receipt in there,
50:48and then every time you walk out
50:49the door, you're like,
50:50oh, yeah, I've got to take that
50:51to return.
50:52You probably need
50:52a bigger bag, though.
50:55Right, shall we keep going?
50:56Yes, please.
50:57Let's keep going.

55:52Just seven days
55:52to make the change.
55:54To our family home
55:55so full of stress
55:56by removing a lifetime
55:58of clutter and mess.
55:59Gerry,

56:01such a joy to be around.

56:06So now we can't wait
56:07to reap the reward.
56:08With Stacey and Dilly,
56:09we've struck our right chord.
56:11And Ewan and Rob
56:12were free to roam
56:13to help turn our house
56:14into a home.
56:16Obviously,
56:16we can't fix everything,
56:19but I really hope
56:20what we've done

57:21It's just so calming.
57:21I love the shed.
57:23We know that our future
57:25is going to be difficult,
57:26but we can live again.
57:29So?
57:29I started to do
57:31a bit of cooking again.
57:32He does all his stews
57:33and mince and tatties
57:35and he's able
57:36to find everything.
57:38Help yourselves.
57:39Oh, they look good.
57:40But I avoid
57:41chicken casseroles.
58:11And it totally
