00:10A young couple become the victims of a terrifying assault.
00:17This crime scene was one of the bloodiest that I've ever seen.
00:22I could see a slash across his throat.
00:26She had several lacerations to her hands as well as to her abdomen.
00:32For law enforcement, one of their biggest priorities was to figure out who would want to do this to either
00:39of them.
00:40The evidence seems to point to a jealous stalker.
00:44She had mentioned that a guy named John with dreads had followed her.
00:49He would pop up like in crazy places.
00:55But as the investigation unfolds, detectives begin to question everything about the case.
01:02This troll of blood led to the kitchen.
01:06There was two knives missing.
01:08How did the suspect know exactly where to go to get the knife?
01:15Didn't it not make sense to me?
01:16The math just was not math.
01:20Detectives are starting to believe that John really didn't exist.
01:40January 17th, 2010.
01:43It's 3.30 a.m. in Shreveport, Louisiana,
01:46when police receive an emergency call from 24-year-old Kimethea Coleman.
02:04She's saying that her boyfriend, Ryan Spinks, they both have been attacked.
02:09This person ran out of the apartment, and she doesn't know where he is.
02:29Minutes later, officers arrive at the address,
02:32where they find 29-year-old Brian Spinks lying motionless by the door.
02:37I could see stab wounds about the head.
02:41I could see a slash across his throat.
02:45There was a great amount of blood to where when you step into the living room,
02:50you could hear the sound of liquid in the carpet.
02:55They were able to quickly establish that Brian was dead.
03:00Kim is screaming hysterically, and she's yelling,
03:04why would he do this?
03:09The officers secure the scene and escort Kimethea out of the apartment.
03:14They try to calm her down so she can explain what happened.
03:20Kimethea appeared to be in a state of shock.
03:23She was covered head to toe in blood, and she was very distraught.
03:29When they asked her who did this, she described a man with dreadlocks in a red shirt.
03:36She said he left. She didn't know which direction he went.
03:41It's normal for a victim or someone who sees a traumatic event
03:46not to be able to divulge what occurred right then.
03:51She was also injured, so we had to get her treatment and take her to the hospital.
03:56She had several lacerations to her hands, as well as to her abdomen and her leg.
04:07As Kimethea is transported to a hospital,
04:10homicide detectives arrive to take over the investigation.
04:15Before entering the apartment, they speak with two potential witnesses.
04:21The initial responding officers had located a vehicle at the apartment complex.
04:27The vehicle was stopped, and the individuals were contacted
04:31and found out to be friends of Ms. Kimethea Coleman.
04:36They were with her earlier in the day.
04:39They had arrived at the apartment to check on her when she didn't answer her phone.
04:46Whenever we interview witnesses, we want to find out anything we can, whatever they know.
04:52What type of relationship they have with the victim,
04:55what knowledge they have prior to the events that occurred.
05:00For law enforcement, one of their biggest priorities was to figure out
05:04who was Brian Spinks, who was Kimethea Coleman,
05:07and who would want to hurt them,
05:11who would want to do this to either of them.
05:19Brian Dennis Spinks was born December 15, 1980, in St. Louis, Missouri.
05:26He grew up in a family with a proud history of military service.
05:31Brian was the second child, but the first boy.
05:34And subsequently, he had two younger brothers.
05:37His father was in the military.
05:39Our mother, she was a DOD, Department of Defense employee, for security assistance.
05:45It goes all the way back to his great-grandfather being in the Korean War.
05:51My father and my grandfather were both in the World War II.
05:55And then, of course, me in the Marine Corps.
06:01After high school in 1999,
06:04Brian followed the family tradition and enlisted in the Air Force.
06:07But before he deployed, his life changed.
06:12I met Brian Spinks, I want to say, back in the summer of 2000.
06:17It was my senior year of high school.
06:19Brian had just joined the Air Force.
06:21And he had swung by the high school to help with all the recruiters.
06:26Brian was very attractive, and his smile was remarkable.
06:31We dated for about six months,
06:33and I thought that I was pregnant with Amani.
06:39In January 2001, Brian became a father.
06:43But the romance didn't last.
06:46He, of course, had military obligations,
06:49and I felt alone because the military had number one priority.
06:54He was going to do the full ride.
06:56Wouldn't have had a problem getting a job after the Air Force.
07:04Shortly after Amani was born, Brian was going to Iraq.
07:07He took long tours.
07:10He, you know, did with it the best he could
07:12and spoke to his son when he could,
07:15had the relationship with his son's mom.
07:17They co-parented.
07:20It was very difficult, especially as Amani started getting older.
07:25When we did spend time together in person,
07:29we had a good time.
07:30He made me feel loved.
07:32And, you know, I cried when he left.
07:34But I understand what he was doing.
07:36He had to serve his country.
07:43While stationed in Montgomery,
07:45he had a daughter with another woman in the Air Force.
07:48Once she became pregnant,
07:50she got discharged from the Air Force
07:52and went home to, I think, Buffalo, New York.
07:55So that was difficult in itself.
07:57And Brian only got to see her a few times.
08:00He did the best he could from a distance.
08:03But while on deployment,
08:05Brian's focus was on the men in his unit.
08:08Brian and I met when I was in the Air Force back in 2002.
08:13He and I were both stationed at
08:15Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana.
08:17He was kind of the organizer between all of us.
08:21We all just kind of meshed
08:23because it was the only family that we had.
08:24You know, our families were in different countries,
08:26different places.
08:27And he made sure that we had a place
08:31to come and congregate.
08:35By the time he returned home in 2008,
08:39Brian was ready to focus on his family.
08:42When he came home,
08:43it was always about Imani.
08:45It was good, you know.
08:47He talked, he checked on me.
08:50I ain't want for nothing.
08:54At a friend's get-together later that year,
08:57Brian met someone new.
08:58A young woman named Kamithia Coleman.
09:03Kamithia Coleman was from a small town,
09:06about 30 minutes outside of Shreveport.
09:09Just about everyone who knew her,
09:10loved her and liked her.
09:12She was very popular.
09:14Prom queen, homecoming queen, you name it.
09:18Kamithia was a very sweet girl.
09:20I talked to her almost every Sunday,
09:22and she would always be in church.
09:24Kamithia went on to go to Grambling State University.
09:27She chose a life of service as a social worker.
09:30She dedicated her life to serving and helping other people.
09:35She was just, seemed like almost the perfect girl
09:40to introduce to your family and to settle down with.
09:43Brian had never been this serious about someone
09:46until Kamithia came along.
09:53But little more than a year after they began dating,
09:57Brian has been killed by an unknown assailant.
10:00And investigators are now questioning two women
10:03outside the couple's apartment.
10:05One was a long-time friend, the Kamithia Coleman's,
10:09and then the second individual was her sister.
10:12The friend advises that she had been at the club
10:15with her sister and Miss Coleman downtown in Shreveport.
10:20The women say Kamithia seemed upset that evening,
10:24and it had something to do with another man.
10:27She had mentioned to the sisters
10:30that a guy named John with dreads had followed her.
10:34One of the sisters said that she did see
10:37someone at the club with dreads,
10:39but a lot of black males at that time wore dreads,
10:43and so nothing stood out to her.
10:45They say Brian was also at the club,
10:48but neither he nor Kamithia stayed for long.
10:52There's a brief conversation between the two,
10:55and Brian leaves.
10:57Then the friends notice.
11:00Minutes later, Kamithia leaves.
11:04And within a few minutes of Kamithia leaving,
11:07they left to see if Kamithia's car was still there,
11:11and they didn't see it.
11:12So they went to Brian's to make sure
11:15she got where she was going.
11:17When they got there, they heard the screaming,
11:19and they saw the police coming,
11:21and they knew something was terribly wrong.
11:24To detectives, the women appeared genuine
11:27in their account of the evening.
11:29So the investigation is just beginning.
11:33We didn't have enough to go on,
11:35so we needed to speak with Kamithia
11:38to find out who is John
11:40and get more information on why
11:42he followed her to Brian's apartment.
11:49coming up.
11:51Evidence reveals the brutality of the attack.
11:54The fact that the knife was broken
11:57is indicative of a very powerful or angry strike.
12:03and detectives speak with Kamithia.
12:07I don't know, of course.
12:09You've got to tell me
12:10to come back from the kitchen.
12:11I don't know.
12:13I don't know, of course.
12:15I don't know.
12:33I don't know him.
12:39I don't know.
12:41attention to the crime scene police are not able to talk to kim her wounds are being tended to
12:49and they're hoping that the scene could give them the answers to this puzzle
12:56this crime scene was one of the bloodiest that i've ever seen
13:00they observed what they thought to be at least 30 wounds to brian the cut from his neck which
13:09almost had decapitated brian was what the lethal blow was the amount of blood in the apartments
13:18and the amount of injuries that brian sustained is indicative of a person with a lot of rage or anger
13:27they have some reason to be mad enough to do that kind of damage and that much damage to another
13:39individual the murder weapons a pair of knives found near brian's body seemed to confirm their
13:46assessment there was a knife that was intact there was also another knife that was close by that was
13:54a handle and the blade was located in another part of the living room the fact that the knife was
14:00broken
14:01is indicative of a very powerful or angry strike this trail of blood led to the kitchen and they
14:11notice that on the kitchen counter is this knife block there was two knives missing from the knife block
14:20that also match the knives that were laying next to bronze sphinx's body
14:27and now they are able to kind of put the pieces together that these two knives came off the kitchen
14:36counter
14:42we did search the the front door to see any type of jarring or kick marks or pry marks or
14:50anything and
14:50none were located they start wondering how did he get in did someone leave a door unlocked
15:01police canvass the apartment complex but none of the neighbors they speak to saw what happened
15:07that leaves one person who might be able to identify the killer and she's in the hospital
15:15police now find that comethia's wounds are not life-threatening so they are able to talk with her
15:23comethia was brought to the violent crimes office there at the shreveport police department roughly
15:29around 7 a.m obviously we all know why we're here um we're investigating the uh stabbing of
15:41ron is he okay we'll discuss all that and then will you talk to us it's right okay
15:50it's always my mom he's dead
15:54this ass follow me
16:02comethia tells police that she was out on the town it was a girl's night out
16:09they went to a couple of different establishments had a few drinks and then they ended up at gg's
16:16gg's is one of the larger clubs in downtown shreveport not long after they got to gg's they
16:23saw brian tell me about that we talked then we were he he got upset and he left
16:32comethia advised us that whenever her and brian went out separately that they weren't supposed to
16:38meet up at the same club or go to the same places they had an agreement that if one comes
16:44to the club
16:45the other one has to leave so brian leaves she said that she decided to go back to brian's apartment
16:54to make sure that everything was cool comethia advised us that her and brian were back at his
17:01apartments and they were kind of talking all of a sudden
17:08and
17:09him he stabbed brian
17:13yes like two or three times and all i do i know i hit him a couple of times
17:20she said she tried to jump on him and he pushed her back
17:25after he finished stabbing brian he just gets up and runs off you keep saying ass
17:37comethia explains that john was a man she dated casually in the past and he seemed to have gotten
17:43the wrong idea i mean i told him there would never be anything because i was with him i was
17:50crying and
17:52i mean i mean after a couple of months he he got the picture but then he showed back up
17:57he would pop
17:58up like in crazy places
18:04comethia stated she saw him at the library she also saw him near her apartment and later saw him at
18:10the
18:10club with her friends
18:15despite the alarming run-ins with this man over the past month comethia seems strangely unable to
18:21provide investigators with any details she could never tell us a phone number or she couldn't even
18:29tell us his last name she stated that he drives different cars and he will call her from different
18:36pay phones and the fact that she can't give us specific information about this john had us starting
18:43to question exactly what she was telling us
18:51police realized that she could still be in shock
18:56so they decide to go to the cell phones they asked comethia for permission to go through her cell phone
19:06there are three voicemails on her phone two of them are from friends talking about going out that
19:10night and making plans for the night and then that third voicemail is from brian he left the voicemail in
19:17between the time he left the club and the time that she arrived at his apartments
19:23he advised that he was done he was breaking up with her
19:30prior to us hearing that it appeared that her and brian's relationship was was fine
19:40as the detectives confront her with this voicemail she changes
19:49her demeanor changes
19:51thank you why did he break up with you
19:55he didn't break up with you tonight
19:59we always go through this it's not a big deal
20:02officer just left him at the board
20:06so yeah it's a big deal it's a very big deal
20:27four hours after brian spinks was found stabbed to death in his apartment investigators have just
20:35heard a voicemail from that same night in which he broke up with his girlfriend kimithia coleman
20:43the new information has them questioning if her story of a violent home invasion by a jealous stalker
20:50is true
20:53at that point she asks to speak to detective farquhar alone they had developed a bit of a rapport and
21:00she trusted him in a way that she hadn't developed trust with the other detectives
21:07we step outside into a little room to where we could still watch
21:12kimithia and detective farquhar in their interview but kimithia can't see us
21:18i was hoping that she would finally confide to me exactly what happened
21:25what did you sleep tonight girl
21:30don't be embarrassed okay
21:33it's just me they're out of here
21:38at that point she started telling me that brian had in the past as well as that night has hit
21:45her
21:45her and abused her but she felt that she deserved it and so she didn't say anything to anyone
21:53kimithia stated that they argued in brian's apartment that he'd been drinking he was drunk and
22:01she stated that he grabbed her by the hand causing a minor bruise and then brian grabbed her throat
22:08strangling her she said she pushed him off and that's when he went into the kitchen and got a knife
22:17i don't know if it's hard you gotta tell me that he comes back from the kitchen
22:25according to kimithia he begins to stab her about the legs and stomach area
22:36she said she had to do something in order to defend herself in that moment so she at that point
22:43got up went into the kitchen got her own knife and i just i was like i thought i could
22:50tell
22:50him
23:00so he just kept standing when did the stroke be cut because it was kind of bad um
23:10Um, the guy, did you follow me here?
23:13Sean did?
23:14Mm-hmm.
23:15Was he in the apartment where all this happened?
23:18He didn't see me coming, and I was like,
23:21I'll be, I'll be, what the are you doing here?
23:25She's changing the story now.
23:30It has now gone from John breaking into the apartment
23:34and attacking Brian to John walking into the apartment
23:40as she and Brian were fighting.
23:43It kind of confused her story.
23:45The fact that she brought John back in
23:48did not make sense to me.
23:50So he showed up in the middle of y'all fighting?
23:52Mm-hmm.
23:53And what all did he do?
23:55He got the not-and-just the way Jim,
23:58whatever, I guess he was trying to think of what I did.
24:01It made no sense to anyone in that room.
24:04Like, the math just was not mathing.
24:07At this point, detectives are starting to believe
24:10that John really didn't exist.
24:18The question that the detectives asked was,
24:20why didn't you just leave?
24:21You're being attacked.
24:22You get, you're able to get away.
24:25But instead of leaving, you grab a weapon
24:27and you come back to the fight.
24:30I was trying to talk to him, tell him to calm down.
24:34I'm like, okay, are you really going to do this right now?
24:38At that point, I advised Detective Holmes
24:41and Agent Dunkel to come back in.
24:44I asked Komethea to repeat what she had told me to them.
24:49At that point, she advised for an attorney.
24:51So the interview was concluded.
24:57Since it appears the stabbing was a crime of passion,
25:01police charge Komethea Coleman with manslaughter.
25:05Under Louisiana state law,
25:07they have 72 hours to gather any additional evidence.
25:12Within the 72-hour period,
25:14a detective would gather all the pertinent information
25:18to corroborate the charge
25:21or upgrade it to second-degree murder.
25:25And with that being said,
25:26they would gather more evidence,
25:28talk to more witnesses,
25:30talking to anybody that knew her or Brian Spinks
25:35and their relationship.
25:40Coming up,
25:41witnesses provide troubling new details
25:44about events leading up to the murder.
25:47She threatened to beat his ass there at the club.
25:51And medical analysis casts doubt on Komethea's story.
25:56The coroner identified 64 stab wounds.
26:01It's hard for me to fathom
26:03this incident being self-defense.
26:20It's been nearly 12 hours since Brian Spinks' murder,
26:24and loved ones have started to learn the tragic news.
26:30I just had, uh, randomly come in to my mom's house,
26:36and she hung up the phone,
26:37and she screamed my name,
26:39and it was just something about the way she screamed it.
26:44And she told me the news that Brian was killed
26:49just in the shot.
26:54With Komethea Coleman in custody,
26:57detectives turn their attention
26:59to locating the alleged stalker
27:01she continues to claim murdered her boyfriend.
27:05Now that Komethea's story is not making much sense,
27:09it's very important for police to rule out the John theory.
27:19Police did locate a person that fit John's description.
27:26He said he didn't know Komethea,
27:28and he didn't know Brian.
27:31They weren't able to find any type of, um, evidence on him.
27:37No blood, no knife wounds.
27:41With the suspect having to be so close to the victim,
27:44it would have been nearly impossible
27:46for the person to not have some kind of evidence transfer
27:50from the victim to their person.
27:53Blood is very slippery,
27:55and when someone is stabbing someone,
27:58generally the knife, uh, will slip,
28:02and they will cut themselves during the events.
28:04This gentleman that was stopped
28:06had no injuries whatsoever on him.
28:08It was very clear, this is not John.
28:14Not only are investigators unable to find John,
28:18there is no evidence he exists at all.
28:23Surveillance cameras were captured from Gigi's.
28:27There was no black male with dreadlocks with a red shirt
28:30that was walking around Gigi's,
28:33stalking her.
28:35We were unable to locate any witnesses
28:38that saw this guy, John,
28:40uh, or any video to corroborate Komethea's statement
28:44that she saw him at the club
28:46or that she saw him at the library.
28:49It became apparent to police
28:51that Komethea had literally sent them
28:54on a goose chase to find another suspect
28:58that was nonexistent.
29:04The discovery means there were only two people
29:07in the apartment when the stabbing occurred,
29:10Brian and Komethea.
29:12She stabbed him in a rage.
29:17There was no John in the picture whatsoever.
29:21But it is better for detectives to still go a little bit further
29:27to get more evidence, talk to her family, talk to friends.
29:32I did receive a phone call from Brian's father,
29:36and he advised that Brian, within the past couple of weeks,
29:40was getting ready to part ways with Komethea.
29:45His description to me was,
29:47Dad, I'm being smothered.
29:49He told me he wasn't seeing any other girls,
29:52just her.
29:53But she was smothering him.
29:55And, uh, he needed some time to wait.
30:03She had been pressuring him about marriage,
30:06and he didn't feel like he was ready for that.
30:09She was getting up at night, going in his phone,
30:12going in his emails, searching the house,
30:15going through the drawers,
30:16looking for some type of incriminating evidence
30:18that he's dating another girl.
30:21It progressively got worse,
30:23the jealousness and the insecurities.
30:29Brian's loved ones say
30:31the tension between him and Komethea
30:33finally reached a breaking point
30:36on the night of January 17th.
30:39Air Force OSI detectives
30:41interviewed the Brian Spinks friends
30:44who went out with him that night.
30:46They state that Brian was at Gigi's
30:50dancing with a friend,
30:51but not intimately or anything of that nature,
30:54just a friendly dance with another female.
30:59Komethea sees Brian dancing with this female.
31:02She gets enraged
31:06and figures this must be a side piece.
31:10And they argue.
31:15She threatened to beat his ass
31:17there at the club
31:19for dancing with someone else.
31:21That night,
31:23I saw a different side of Kim
31:25that I had never seen before.
31:27I had never seen her react this way.
31:31Eventually, cooler heads prevailed
31:33and we sat down with Kim.
31:36She said to me,
31:37she was like,
31:37you know, Shane,
31:38you know,
31:38I'm sorry.
31:40You know,
31:40I love him
31:41and, you know,
31:42I overreacted.
31:43So, in my mind,
31:45the night was over
31:46and everything was fine.
31:48I had no idea
31:50what happened after that
31:51until the next morning.
31:54Through all the interviews
31:56that we did,
31:57we feel that
31:58Komethea was jealous
31:59and that when Brian
32:01tried to break it off with her,
32:04that it just made her
32:05lose her mind.
32:07And that if
32:08she couldn't have him,
32:10no one could.
32:26Police in Shreveport, Louisiana
32:28have arrested
32:30Komethea Coleman
32:31for stabbing her boyfriend,
32:33Brian Spinks,
32:34to death.
32:35But Komethea insists
32:37she was acting
32:38in self-defense.
32:40Being that there was
32:41accusation of abuse,
32:43we pulled up
32:44any type of police records.
32:45But there were no records
32:47between Brian Spinks
32:48or Komethea.
32:53Investigators look
32:53to Brian's autopsy
32:55to provide
32:56definitive answers.
32:58Once the coroner
32:59got him
33:00down to the morgue
33:01and they conducted
33:01the autopsy,
33:02they identified
33:0464 stab wounds.
33:07When somebody's
33:08trying to defend
33:09themselves from
33:10an attacker,
33:11they are trying
33:12to de-escalate
33:13the situation,
33:15trying to put
33:15a little distance
33:16between them
33:17and their attacker
33:17just to stop
33:18the incident
33:20from occurring.
33:22It's hard for me
33:23to fathom
33:24this incident's
33:25being self-defense.
33:28Detectives are left
33:30with how is it
33:32that this 100-pound
33:33female was able
33:35to overtake
33:36this 5'11
33:38muscle-bound male
33:40who's in the military.
33:45When we got
33:46the autopsy report back,
33:48it showed that
33:49his blood alcohol level
33:50was over twice
33:52the legal limit
33:54and that he probably
33:56would not have been
33:57able to fight back.
34:01Her entire defense
34:02on the self-defense
34:04side was,
34:06he attacked me.
34:07There was no way
34:08that Brian,
34:09with the .174
34:11blood alcohol content,
34:14attacked her,
34:15walked to the kitchen,
34:16came back,
34:17and stabbed her.
34:24Chimidia's own injuries
34:26also seemed
34:27to contradict her story.
34:29She first claimed
34:30that John had stabbed her
34:32and then she claimed
34:34that Brian had stabbed her
34:36during their fight
34:38in which she was
34:39defending herself.
34:41But the Caddo Parish
34:43coroner said
34:44that they were not
34:45penetrating,
34:45that they were
34:47superficial wounds,
34:48which would leave him
34:50to believe
34:51that they were
34:51self-inflicted.
34:54Maybe the murder
34:55was not premeditated,
34:56but she went
34:57to extreme lengths
34:58to create evidence,
35:01to create the optics
35:02that would support
35:03her story.
35:05She was desperate
35:06to stay out of trouble,
35:07so much so
35:08that she harmed herself.
35:14on January 19th, 2010,
35:18less than 72 hours
35:19after Brian's murder,
35:22prosecutors upgrade
35:23Chimidia's charges
35:24from manslaughter
35:25to second-degree murder.
35:28Second-degree murder
35:29is the intentional
35:31killing of another person,
35:33whereas manslaughter
35:35is killing someone
35:37in the heat of the moment.
35:39the fact that
35:41she did
35:4164 stab wounds
35:44to him
35:44as well as
35:45a severe laceration
35:47to his throat
35:48was more indicative
35:49that she meant
35:50to kill him.
35:52The behavior
35:53they said
35:53she displayed
35:55wasn't the Kim
35:56I know,
35:57wasn't the Kim
35:58I've talked to.
36:00I couldn't believe
36:01the viciousness.
36:05A trial date
36:07is set,
36:07but as her day
36:08in court approaches,
36:10Kimidia's attorneys
36:11introduce a new strategy
36:13for her defense.
36:15She pleaded not guilty
36:16by reason of insanity.
36:18There were motions filed,
36:21there was a mental evaluation
36:22conducted,
36:23and she was deemed
36:24incompetent
36:25to stand trial.
36:27She was transferred
36:29to a mental health
36:31facility
36:31for 90 days.
36:32At the end
36:33of that 90 days,
36:34she had a second evaluation.
36:37November 2011,
36:38it was determined
36:39that Kimidia Coleman
36:40was able to stand trial
36:43and testify.
36:48On April 23rd, 2012,
36:51Kimidia Coleman's
36:52murder trial begins.
36:54Despite the results
36:56of her psychiatric evaluation,
36:58her defense
36:59remains the same.
37:01Battered wife syndrome
37:03was one of the elements
37:06of her insanity defense,
37:08that she was beaten enough
37:11and that she was abused
37:12and endured so much
37:13abuse that one day
37:15she just couldn't
37:15take anymore
37:16and she fought back.
37:18The defense tried
37:19to paint Brian
37:20as an abusive person
37:22and tried to claim
37:23that he had PTSD
37:25because he had served
37:26in the Middle East
37:27and that he came back
37:29and took all of that
37:30out on Kimidia.
37:33For prosecutors,
37:34the question is
37:36whether the jury
37:37will believe it.
37:39Only two people know
37:40what really occurred
37:41during the relationship
37:42and one of them
37:42is no longer here
37:43they could tell their story.
38:05At her murder trial,
38:07Kimidia Coleman claims
38:09the abuse she suffered
38:10at the hands
38:11of her boyfriend,
38:12Brian Spinks,
38:13drove her to commit
38:14a desperate act
38:15of self-preservation.
38:17Police and prosecutors
38:19say otherwise.
38:21Throughout the investigation
38:23and throughout the preparation
38:24for the trial,
38:25there was just no evidence
38:27that pointed to
38:29Brian being an abusive person.
38:33She was saying that
38:34he beat on women
38:36and he beat on me.
38:38Brian wouldn't hit the fly.
38:41Kimidia Coleman
38:44is a disturbed female
38:48who could not take no
38:49from her boyfriend
38:50who did not want
38:52to be with her anymore.
38:53That's what made her snap.
39:00Prosecutors present
39:02Kimidia's 911 call
39:04as definitive proof
39:06her actions
39:07were premeditated.
39:09I went back and listened
39:11to that phone call.
39:12You can hear Brian
39:13in the background.
39:19She gets real loud
39:20and kind of screams.
39:21And if you listen closely,
39:23you can hear Brian
39:24start to gurgle.
39:35I think that is when
39:37she delivered
39:38the final blow
39:40while she was on the phone
39:41with another woman.
39:50Hearing his voice
39:51one last time
39:52crying for help.
39:55was
39:59truly
40:00a
40:00gun rich man.
40:04I can't imagine
40:06a human being
40:06doing what she did
40:07to somebody.
40:10What she did was
40:16Amanda
40:16deserved to leave
40:17like that.
40:27who would have thought
40:29a sweet
40:30young lady
40:31with a future
40:32a loving family
40:33who would believe
40:34she would do
40:35such a horrendous crime.
40:37I just couldn't believe it.
40:39And she turned
40:40into another person
40:41that night
40:43as if she was possessed.
40:49The jury
40:50in this trial
40:51deliberated
40:51two hours
40:52and they came back
40:54with a unanimous
40:55guilty as charged
40:57verdict
40:57of second degree murder.
41:02Komethea Coleman
41:03is sentenced
41:04to life
41:05in prison
41:06without the possibility
41:07of parole.
41:09She will not
41:10spend another day
41:11in freedom.
41:12She'll be locked up
41:14but that still
41:15doesn't help
41:16his friends
41:17and family.
41:24We was trying
41:25to plan Imani
41:25a big surprise
41:26birthday party
41:27because it was
41:28going to be
41:28the first time
41:29Brian was
41:29in the U.S.
41:31when his birthday hit.
41:33She took that
41:33from me.
41:35Man,
41:35that was supposed
41:36to be my guide
41:37through life.
41:37You know,
41:38like,
41:39she took that
41:40but I can't
41:42get that back.
41:44I believe
41:45Brian would be
41:45extremely proud
41:46of his son.
41:47of the man
41:48that he has become.
41:50I wasn't
41:51completely stripped
41:52because I got
41:53a grandson
41:53that reminds me
41:55of every time
41:55I look at him
41:56and talk to him.
41:57His same voice
41:59Brian still is.
42:03I respect
42:04what he did
42:04in the service,
42:05the sacrifice
42:05that he made.
42:06Great father
42:07willing to do
42:08anything for the kids
42:09even though
42:10it was from afar.
42:12I still feel
42:14his spirit around me.
42:15He was a good person,
42:17you know.
42:18No matter
42:18what happened,
42:19you know,
42:20even how he died,
42:22that ain't
42:22who he was.
42:24My father
42:25was an abuser,
42:26he took care
42:26of his kids.
42:28I just want people
42:29to know
42:29that my father
42:30was a good man.
42:31to know
