The Commanders star quarterback was having fun and is allowed to do things off the field.
Transcript
00:02my text and Twitter was going nuts about this flag football game.
00:07Some of it was just a lot of excitement.
00:09Some of it was that game and flag football in general.
00:13I think there's a lot of different layers to this, right?
00:17One, I think there should be zero surprise
00:21that the U.S. national flag football team,
00:25the best people in our country of 350 million at this sport,
00:30beat the hell out of some dudes that don't play the same sport.
00:33They're different sports.
00:36Things that you try and do instinctively and naturally are illegal in flag football.
00:41And that's where you saw a lot of it go to their favor.
00:45And the little kid, Doucette, he was in everybody's face,
00:51welcome to flag football.
00:52Is that the speed guy?
00:53Yeah, he's fast, little dude.
00:54But listen, they're exceptional at that.
00:58And when you go into that sport,
01:00you have to understand the idiosyncrasies of it.
01:02You won't be able to do much at all.
01:04You know what I'm saying?
01:06Like they had one drive.
01:08They take the snap and he immediately hit the guy that's on the line.
01:12He gets 10, 15 yards.
01:15Take the snap.
01:16They did that and then boom, they scored.
01:18The U.S. was just trying to,
01:19I mean the pro guys were just trying to throw deep balls.
01:22If I know you're just throwing it deep, I'm going to stay deep.
01:26Right.
01:26Like.
01:44He's like, yeah.
01:45Like he wasn't going to get embarrassed.
01:46I think the flag football guys, I think really handled it well.
01:53Not the, the male Kardashian Logan Paul, but like the pro flag footballers,
01:58they knew not to talk too much S or try to embarrass anyone because the pro
02:03football players could just level them at any moment.
02:06But they, everybody I thought from the players on the field kind of
02:10approached it the right way.
02:11I watched some of the pro guys who understood the flag game.
02:15Jayden understand the flag game.
02:17You will watch him when he'll, he'll get a pass.
02:20He start running ball in the air.
02:21Yeah.
02:22And he just turned the hips.
02:23Cause I watched this young lady from the date, the team in Dallas.
02:27I watched this lady run, this girl run full speed in a straight line.
02:31And all she did was shake, like just change her hip and nobody could touch
02:35her damn flag.
02:36You know, the first thing you do as a former NFL player,
02:41somebody go to reach, you block their hand.
02:43Right.
02:43Flag.
02:44Okay.
02:45Uh, somebody's coming in to rush the quarterback.
02:48If you, you're going to try to get in his way flag.
02:51So everything that you naturally know, you go, it's going to go against you.
02:54So that's why.
02:56And then when you start playing any sport hesitant,
03:00you're not going to be very good at it.
03:02And, but Jayden team did be Thompson.
03:05Yeah.
03:06I mean, I look at that.
03:07Neither team had a chance at beating the flag football.
03:10Ain't no damn way.
03:10Also was that, that's not the regulation size field, right?
03:14No, flag flag is not regulation size.
03:16No.
03:16Was the field they were playing that game on the real flag size?
03:21Oh, I thought they said it was 25 yards wide by like, I don't know.
03:25The one they were playing in was, I'm curious what a real flag football field is.
03:30I think that's what it actually is.
03:32A regular flag football is 25 yards wide by something.
03:35It ain't that long.
03:37That big.
03:37Interesting.
03:37The field seemed way too small to me.
03:41I thought maybe with the speed and that's why you try to confine it a little bit.
03:46I remember watching, was it arena ball?
03:49Yeah, dude.
03:50That was fun.
03:51That was wild.
03:51A lot of people get knocked across the wall.
03:53Yeah.
03:53It says a standard flag football field typically measures 70 yards long and 25 to 30 yards wide.
03:58Yeah.
03:58Okay.
03:59All right.
04:02So, locally, the conversation became, oh my God, why is Jaden out there, right?
04:06And that was kind of the conversation before and then it went away and then it came back.
04:10I was just in the hallway here and for me, I put this, talking with folks here, right?
04:20Like, one of the people here, very upset.
04:22He said 10 out of 10, mad upset, Jaden shouldn't have been doing it.
04:26The other dude said 2 out of 10.
04:28Like, for me, knowing how football players work out and do stuff throughout the offseason,
04:36like, they're playing pick-up hoops all the time.
04:39Like, check Deron Payne's Instagram.
04:43Like, he goes snowboarding.
04:44Like, these are guys that are young and active.
04:47Like, they're going to be active.
04:48So, I think the thought that, like, yo, he could have gotten injured.
04:52And I will say, I was surprised by the physicality of it.
04:56I didn't know enough about flag football that you run two quarterbacks and sometimes the quarterbacks run out in space.
05:02Like, I didn't know that, right?
05:03It shouldn't have been no physicality.
05:04If it wasn't for the NFL player, you wouldn't have seen no physicality.
05:08Right.
05:09The guys playing flag know what they're doing.
05:11That's why I stated what I stated.
05:13The way you watch Jaden, what he was doing, he was doing what those guys do.
05:18He wasn't doing what the NFL players were doing.
05:21Like, Joe Burrow, who's missed so much time over the last few years,
05:24tried to, like, dive for a first down or whatever.
05:26I can only imagine what Bengals fans must have felt like.
05:30But, like, or, so, I'll open the phone lines.
05:34800-636-1067.
05:36800-636-1067.
05:38How big of a deal was it for you that Jaden played flag football this weekend?
05:43To me, I got it at four out of ten.
05:45Like, this is.
05:46I got it at zero.
05:47You're at zero.
05:49Yeah.
05:50You think it's much to do about.
05:52Were you, did you get to watch any of it?
05:53I watched it.
05:54I watched a lot of it.
05:55I watched, I watched, I watched, I watched when they destroyed.
05:57Did you know he was going to run routes and stuff?
06:11I would love for the average person who was losing their mind to go watch a person train.
06:18For an NFL season.
06:21What they did, yes.
06:22What they did in that flag football game is minor compared to what they do.
06:26Getting themselves ready for football games.
06:28The type of stuff they're doing with all kind of different stuff and obstacles they got to avoid and things
06:34of that nature.
06:35What you put your body through.
06:37I, listen, I got to the point, I was just sick of people complaining about it.
06:41And I, you know me, I, every once in a while I'm going to, I'll fire off tweets and I
06:46just had to go.
06:47Did you get into it?
06:48No, I ain't getting into it.
06:49I just had to tell a friend of mine.
06:51I say, let it go.
06:53Please.
06:54I, I don't want to be in the business of telling anybody how they should feel or react, right?
06:59Everybody's going to have their own reactions.
07:01To me, it's pretty nothing burger-ish.
07:04We're in the business of telling people how they're supposed to think and how they're supposed to react.
07:07Because the people that always want to say something, they, they tell us how to think and react.
07:11So I have a right to come back and tell anybody I want.
07:13I don't give a damn view.
07:14Oh, for sure.
07:14If you work here, don't work here, whatever.
07:18You say stuff I don't agree with, relax, dog.
07:21Or sometimes, how about you ask the person who's been through this type of stuff and say, what do you
07:25think?
07:26Or, or, what did you go through when you were preparing for ball and stuff like that?
07:31But, I, and I promise you, like, but no one, I have never been asked a question.
07:36Think about this.
07:37I've been working in media for 20 plus years.
07:39No one has come to me and say, what do you think about guys doing stuff in the offseason?
07:45You know why?
07:46Because I was doing the same damn stuff.
07:48Right.
07:49And for me, it's, I never got ready for a season.
07:53If a team don't want you to do it, you know what they do?
07:54Put it in your contract.
07:55I, honestly, seeing how that went, I am a little surprised the league was okay with it.
08:02Like, Devontae Smith goes down pretty hard in the end zone one time.
08:06Like, Jeffrey Lurie watching that, like, wait a second.
08:09You know what I mean?
08:10Like, I think people want to, I don't know.
08:14I'll let people weigh in on the phones.
08:15Barry's an Indian head.
08:16Barry, scale of 1 to 10.
08:19Flag football, Jaden Daniels, how'd you feel?
08:22No problem.
08:24Let me tell you why.
08:27If he can run and cut, that's what really matters.
08:31Okay.
08:32I played some of pro football and I played flag football.
08:35Okay.
08:36And when we played flag football, we had actually blockers.
08:39We had big guys that would actually block.
08:42That made it more like flag football.
08:45What I watched this past weekend was totally different.
08:50You can run.
08:51I mean, you can rush the passer, which was kind of crazy for me without any blocking.
08:55So, I mean, if they had regular blockers that would make it more or less like football, then I could
09:03watch it.
09:04But it was kind of unwatchable.
09:06I appreciate the call, Barry.
09:08When I did some of the flag football games and stuff, what they do here in the area, you can
09:15have the blockers who stand with their hands behind and they can move.
09:22They just can't use their arms to do it.
09:25What I saw the other day with Paul just line up and run, I've never seen that.
09:33Yeah, I agree with that.
09:34Like, I played flag football for a year or so in, like, the frat league in college and there were
09:39linemen.
09:40Like, there were, like, I think there were three offensive linemen or something.
09:43I didn't understand that aspect of it.
09:45Is the flag football we watched this weekend, is that going to be the Olympics?
09:50I don't know.
09:51Listen, Jay.
09:52White Broad, see if you can feel that.
09:53It was an exhibition.
09:54I don't know what the hell they're going to be doing.
09:56I don't either.
09:56Yeah.
09:59We might see D. Green.
10:01That'd be incredible.
10:03Toothpick is on the line.
10:04He can still outrun a lot of people, I'll tell you that.
10:06Mick, what did you think of the flag football game, scale of 1 to 10?
10:10Scale of 1 to 10, my concern level was negative 4 for Jaden.
10:15The fact that he's out there, he gets to throw balls, the live wide receiver, he gets to work on
10:19some of those, you know, passes and things like that.
10:21I know it's not a regulation field, but that's just like him getting his workout in.
10:26And you asked a question earlier, too.
10:28I'm not sure who it was, but I have more concern for a video of...
10:47...or pushing or something like that.
10:48He's using like a hurdle to jab at Bill's leg.
10:52I'm more concerned about that than Jaden playing flag football.
10:56Come on, man.
10:58It's just a negative 4 for me.
11:01All right, man.
11:02Thank you, Ben.
11:02I got to find that thing with Bill now.
11:05I thought I saw Bill's Instagram.
11:09I'm not going to lie, but some of the training techniques today, like, we have watched guys drop back for
11:16a pass, plant, and blow out a knee.
11:20Am I right?
11:20Yeah.
11:21We watch a guy run, plant, and blow out a knee.
11:25Roll ankle, do all kind of stuff.
11:27I have seen all this stuff.
11:29So, the rigorous guys put their bodies through to get ready, that game yesterday was minor.
11:36Or two days ago, whatever it was.
11:38That was minor.
11:40I think watching it, I was surprised.
11:46Like, what takes this?
11:48Like, I know you had to get ready for seasons, and you understood it.
11:54Like, covering enough players over the years and knowing what they do in the offseason, and, like, sometimes guys sending
11:59me videos and stuff.
12:00Like, these are young men.
12:02They're going to do stuff.
12:04Like, they're going to go jumping off boats into the lake.
12:08You know what I mean?
12:09Like, my concern was not that they were playing this flag football game.
12:15I didn't know enough about flag football that the quarterback runs routes.
12:19Like, I can understand if that bothers you.
12:23You know what I mean?
12:24Mm-hmm.
12:24But, listen, watching that U.S. team, the plays they had, like, the quarterback takes a snap, throws it back
12:34to this guy, and immediately run a route.
12:36You're not expecting all this.
12:37They were dicing us up like we had never seen the sport, bro.
12:43Tay Wilson texted this.
12:44He said, being held out at the end of the year but cleared for this was a little strange.
12:49That's fair.
12:50Like, they did hold him out of the end of the season.
12:52Maybe the next time he's on a field, if you don't want to see him in a flag football game.
12:58Being held out at the end of the year because, you know what?
13:00It was real bullets flying at the end of the year.
13:02And they knew that the team had gotten to a point where they couldn't protect him anymore like they wanted
13:06to.
13:07So, that's why they held him out because they were protecting their money.
13:10In that game, I'm sure they told him, look, you can go play.
13:13Don't do nothing stupid.
13:15And as I watched him, I don't think he did anything stupid.
13:18I mean, he played flag football.
13:20Yes.
13:21Which I don't think he could sign up and go and then not do the quarterback stuff.
13:26I want people to understand one thing.
13:28Professional athletes do other stuff.
13:31Okay.
13:32And all of them play football.
13:35I mean, they play basketball.
13:36They play tennis.
13:37They play golf.
13:38They play pickleball.
13:39They play racquetball.
13:41They do all types of things.
13:43They go, like you said, diving out of airplanes.
13:45They mountain climb.
13:46They don't just sit at the house and do nothing.
13:50If that's what you think, then you're wrong.
13:52They don't.
13:53They do everything you do and probably more intense than you do it.
