00:06Hello, I'm Jordan Thomas, Narrative Director of XCOM, and with me here is Harvey Whitney, Producer of XCOM.
00:12Hey, thanks for watching today.
00:14He's going to be driving the demo we showed to you today.
00:17This is our E3 2011 XCOM Demo Walkthrough.
00:40Thank you.
01:07Thank you.
01:39Now, as Agent Carter, that's what you're fighting for.
01:43That child's family and thousands of others like it are the stakes in this conflict with the alien enemy.
01:49But here in 1962, Kennedy is president.
01:52The Cuban Missile Crisis is threatening to turn the Cold War hot.
01:57And your job is to assemble a team of the finest minds in asymmetrical warfare to repel this threat for
02:03which there is no field experience.
02:06These guys are the analysts who are assembling mission profiles from emergency calls all around the country and feeding it
02:12to you and your squad.
02:14Our job is a little more direct.
02:16What we're going to do is assemble our team and head out into the field, capture the enemy technology, and
02:22turn their own weapons against them.
02:46Agent Carter, a real pleasure to meet you.
02:49I'm Agent Leon Barnes.
02:51So this guy's Agent Barnes.
02:53He can speak to the strengths and weaknesses of all the agents available to you with authority.
02:57Come with me and we'll get you set up to the field.
03:00So true confession time.
03:022K Marin is full of big fat RPG nerds like me.
03:06And this underground base is a true social space where you can meet with your fellow field officers and discuss
03:13strategies to repel the aliens.
03:15And sort of look at what it's like to experience the emotional cost of this kind of invasion from within.
03:23Now we're going to assemble our squad of agents from the array that Harvey's managed to accrue over the course
03:29of the game.
03:36Meet our master at arms.
03:38He's an ammo dump on legs.
03:40Makes his own rounds.
03:42First guy you want nearby when you hear the click of an empty chamber.
03:46If you're looking for a bruiser, you've found your guy.
03:49Don't let the dress code fool you.
03:50There's other suits made of dead ruskies.
03:53The agents are the primary channels of player growth in XCOM.
03:57We like to say that they're like your left and right hand and it's up to you to turn each
04:01one into a fist.
04:03Similar to the original games, you've got this big stable of them that you're able to work on and specialize
04:09as you play through the campaign.
04:12Harvey's already taken a couple of these guys out into the field.
04:15The commando at the top there is ready to purchase a new ability with field experience.
04:19So why don't we take a look at what's available?
04:27Harvey went with defensive shield that creates a kind of impervious energy bubble anywhere on the battlefield
04:34which can both function as dynamic cover for your team or crowd control for your enemies where you can separate
04:40them from one another.
04:42But now that we've got our squad, and you can take two agents into the field at once,
04:46we'll go ahead and head over to the operations floor and pick our next mission.
04:50You're all set, Agent Carter.
04:52Hey, watch your back out there.
04:57As of now, Will, you're in command of XCOM's muscle.
05:01Here on the ops floor, we'll supply the brains.
05:03But there's one mind in particular I need on the team.
05:06A man of singular expertise.
05:09That's your next mission.
05:11That's Angela.
05:13She's XCOM's division chief.
05:14She's former CIA, and her job is to take all of the data that the analysts assemble
05:19and turn it into these mission profiles for you to choose between.
05:23When we played the original XCOM games, we felt sort of almost overwhelmed with choices in between missions.
05:29And so here on the big board, you're able to select between missions that drive the story forward
05:35and sort of secondary strategic opportunities in pursuit of a resource.
05:39For example, Illyrium-115 is the heavy element that powers all of the alien technology.
05:45If we capture that, Harvey can invest it in research and gain long-term growth rewards like new weapons, agent
05:51powers, and so on.
05:52Or let's say he wants to deploy one of his agents to go on a mission without him,
05:57and that agent will come back with new field experience, which he can spend on perks and gear and so
06:01on.
06:03So let's take a look at what Harvey does next.
06:07Until recently, Dr. Alan Weir was working with Dad,
06:11analyzing the alien technology and subverting it to help humanity fight back.
06:15A short time ago, we lost contact with him.
06:18You and your team will head to his last known location, track him down, and bring him home.
06:23So Harvey's chosen a Backbone story mission.
06:27Assembling a team of the best of the best also affects the story of the game.
06:31If we get Dr. Alan Weir, he will join the base and be able to comment on future missions,
06:35and he will also grant XCOM a significant boon in terms of its research potential.
06:40So why don't we go ahead and accept that mission and deploy to the field?
06:55So if that combat intelligence, that fierce hunger to understand the enemy from the inside out,
07:02is key to what we feel makes an XCOM experience mechanically.
07:07The human relationship to the unknown is critical to the themes of this origin story.
07:141962 in the United States is a political hotbed.
07:17You had civil rights taking racial tensions and bringing them to the head.
07:20You had issues of gender and sexuality.
07:23All of these marginalized voices finally coming to a fever pitch
07:28where the ruling elite, who had for so long kind of managed the image of the country,
07:34didn't really believe that they belonged.
07:35And so it's into that theater that we step now.
07:46So here we are in the Sky Ranger.
07:48These guys are the agents, and that gear that they're wearing represents the unique powers
07:52that each one that Harvey selected will bring to the battlefield.
08:02Here's a good view of our setting.
08:041962's American Dream at the verge of a tectonic cultural ship.
08:08People like Dr. Weir had found themselves persecuted throughout the 50s
08:12for their politics or their sexuality.
08:14In his case, both.
08:16But now he finds himself the scientific bell of the ball.
08:19Some of those old lines are beginning to blur, and new ones are being drawn.
08:24Now we're supposed to make contact with the National Guard.
08:27They've set up a perimeter around this community the second that they heard
08:29that there might be an alien incursion there.
08:31Let's look for someone in charge.
08:50An empty checkpoint does not bode well.
08:52Let's look for signs of life.
09:21What in hell happened here?
09:33Federal agents, let's see some ID, pal.
09:55That's the face of the alien enemy in XCOM.
09:58Collectively known as the Outsiders, they're made of a kind of living technology.
10:02That one was an infiltrator class, able to look like any human it wants
10:05for purposes of reconnaissance.
10:07But what was it looking for?
10:12It looks like it had opened the dossier on Dr. Alan Weir.
10:15They probably consider him a person of interest
10:16because he's been subverting their technology and making it work for humanity.
10:20But that alarm means we're not going to catch the rest by surprise.
10:22We'd better move quickly.
10:35Alone in XCOM, Harvey will get slaughtered.
10:38He has to command his agents very precisely in order to survive.
11:06This looks like a good opportunity to talk about
11:07some of those design revisions that I mentioned.
11:10This is the tactical view.
11:12It represents Carter's long experience as a field commander.
11:16Now, Harvey can sweep around the entire battlefield
11:18and look for tactical opportunities.
11:20Time is slow into a crawl.
11:23And he can command his agent's powers on a much more granular scale here.
11:26On the left is the commando's powers.
11:29And on the right, you see the master at arms.
11:31Harvey has to choose between the more expensive powers
11:34and the cheaper ones in order to solve a problem like this.
11:36That shield that we're looking at
11:38is soaking up too much of his agent's damage.
11:40He'll lose if he tries to just trade bullets with these guys all day.
11:43So he needs to find a way to solve this problem.
11:46It's kind of our real-time take on the classic battlescape of the original games.
11:53It looks like Harvey's going for disrupt.
11:55That'll create a kind of feedback loop in the body of that outsider
11:57and cause him to drop his guard.
12:20Now, that simple trick was not enough.
12:22So he needs to find a way to take the focus of the fight away from himself
12:27and catch these guys in a crossfire.
12:33All right, looks like he's going to go with the diversion power.
12:35What that'll do is make that agent appear to be the officer
12:38from the point of view of the outsiders.
12:53Nice.
12:54Harvey was able to take out the generator.
12:56And what that does is allow his agents to catch these guys in an easy flank.
13:00He can use those agent powers outside of tactical mode as well
13:03by binding them to the D-pad.
13:14The outsiders threaten our world on an existential scale.
13:18That living technology they're made out of is both intelligent and highly aggressive.
13:22It's part of an ongoing plan to terraform our world and turn it into theirs.
13:26That's how all you hear them.
13:26That's a good, man.
13:26He's got a guy on their shoulders.
13:40I know they're sort of on our shoulders, but he's also so do.
13:42Well, you know what is heнимated with Deliveredima device?
13:43I use two parsons.
13:46I use one of the możos to keep doing great stuff and that's ready for us.
13:48Oh, that you need to go back to his powerful power Br рай anxious.
13:49I only want to hang this one, but I don't think.
13:50I do need to leave you alone.
13:53I don't think I'm going to get this to come out.
13:59That's the university where Dr. Weir lives and works, but the Outsiders have beaten us here.
14:04They've got a strongly reinforced position, and Harvey's at a real disadvantage.
14:08He's going to have to find a way to subvert this situation and make it work for him, using his
14:13agent powers.
14:44Harvey chose to counter the strongly reinforced position of the enemy by creating one of his own.
14:49He laid down a defensive shield, that power that he purchased back in the base, and created a diversion from
14:54inside it.
14:55That allowed his agents to soak up all the damage-dealing potential of the enemy, and freed him up to
15:00come back here and disable the turret.
15:02Now that he's done that, we can capture it. This is another of those design changes that I mentioned.
15:07When he folds up the technology that this turret is made out of, he can actually take it with him
15:12and use it later in the field.
15:24Capture is one of Dr. Weir's designs. Now that Harvey has the technology for the turret in pocket, he has
15:30a choice to make.
15:31He can either melt it down for long-term research gains, such as new weapons, agent perks, and so on,
15:38or he can press it into service as a member of the squad and command it just like an agent.
15:43Whatever he wants to do, we better move on and get to Weir.
15:45No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
15:54no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
15:55no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
15:55no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
15:59no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
16:04no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
16:20This time, Harvey's just outnumbered.
16:22He could solve the problem in a couple of different ways.
16:24If he laid down a defensive shield, it would bottle a couple of his enemies
16:28and force them to wait while he slaughters their friends.
16:31Or, he could use a diversion and just split their focus.
16:34So, what do you want to do, sir?
16:36Alright, Harvey's going for the spendthrift playstyle.
16:38He wants to drop that turret down right now and give them a taste of their own medicine.
17:00Now that Harvey's chosen to deploy the turret in the field like an agent,
17:04it has a limited lifespan.
17:06It's going to disintegrate pretty quickly,
17:08which means we should move on while it's still guarding our back.
17:13Now, sometimes in the field, you'll come across a novel design.
17:16This laser rifle, for example, is not adapted for human use.
17:19But if Harvey returns it to the lab,
17:21he can actually reverse-engineer it and create a version that his agents can wield.
17:25In the meantime, we'll strip out the ammo and use it in one of our own alien weapons.
17:29That is one heck of a weapon!
17:33This is the disintegration ray.
17:35We've included it here to show the gains of the long-term growth curve in XCOM.
17:39If you're willing to invest in research and master the science of the enemy,
17:43you can take them on and remove their edge in combat.
17:56That's a titan.
17:56What the hell are we supposed to fight that thing?
17:58Harvey can't attack it in this form.
18:02Looks like it's opening some kind of gate.
18:05He's being burned.
18:06He has to get inside.
18:20That titan is terraforming this entire courtyard,
18:23bombarding it with some kind of cosmic energy,
18:25and transforming it into something very much like the alien world.
18:28But it's far too valuable an opportunity for us not to attempt, at least, to capture it.
18:33The trouble is, if Harvey were to try and capture it right now,
18:36it would cost him 20 time units.
18:38Time units are the sort of currency of combat in XCOM,
18:42and Harvey doesn't actually even have 20 to spend.
18:45So he's going to have to find a way to weaken the titan before he captures it.
18:50Okay, it looks like he's going to go with some kind of disrupt combo.
19:18Harvey's got the titan on the ropes, but that was the agent with the capture power.
19:21He's going to have to find a way to do a combat evac.
19:24You've got it, boss!
19:25Defensive shield will protect him from the rain.
19:31All right, let's capture that titan.
19:48In XCOM, every enemy is an opportunity.
19:51We wanted to tear down the walls between what is traditionally understood to be the game environment,
19:55the squad, the enemy AI, and the player.
19:58In the right hands, we believe they should all become player tools.
20:17Harvey's attracted reinforcements, and this time they've got him in the crossfire.
20:22All right, it looks like Harvey's going to deploy the titan
20:24and use their strongest machine of war against them.
20:37Now he can command its airstrikes just like an agent.
20:52The titan doesn't have long to live, so let's press on and find Dr. Weir.
21:13That's him, and the enemy have got him.
21:18No!
21:19No!
21:23No!
21:24No!
21:25No!
21:26No!
21:27No!
21:29No!
21:30No!
21:32No!
21:33No!
21:38No!
21:40No!
21:40No!
21:41No!
21:41No!
21:42No!
21:43No!
21:44No!
21:44Grazie per la visione!
