00:18:03I've been singing since I can remember, but songwriting is one of the most important things in my life.

00:46:21My brother Liam, we used to sing in the house all the time.

00:46:24We would dance together in the living room.

00:46:27We were 19 months apart.

00:46:29He was very protective of me, and he was my best friend.

00:46:34In March of 2015, when my brother was nine,

00:46:38he got diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer.

00:46:43He went through chemo, radiation.

00:46:46It was very surreal seeing that.

00:46:50Your big brother always be strong.

00:47:00He passed nine days before his 10th birthday.

00:47:04I will never stop marching to reach you

00:47:11in the middle of the heart.

00:47:14Even though it's been 10 years, those types of things stay with you forever.

01:14:01It felt more Broadway than, like, anything else for me.

01:14:05But you have a great voice.

01:14:07I don't know about y'all, but it felt a little more that for me.

01:14:09It did feel theatrical at times, and I don't think that's a bad thing.

01:14:12But the vocal has a certain understatedness to it that when you lose that,

01:14:16sometimes it can make it a different thing.

01:14:17And so it kind of got me outside of it, but I wanted to turn a bunch of times.

01:14:21Your range is awesome.

01:14:22Appreciate that, yeah.

01:14:23One of the things Michael would always say, he talks about not overusing the vibrato,

01:14:27even when you're doing those songs that kind of make you think that you should do vibrato.

01:14:34Your performance was flawless when it came to pitch.

01:14:36You have a powerful instrument.

01:14:38So it's just about making the right artistic choices to be more effective as a performer.

01:14:43And so I think that's something you could correct and come back and sing another song.

01:15:19I'm Jared Shoemaker.

01:15:20I'm 32 years old, and I'm from Richmond, Kentucky.

01:15:23In 2012, I decided to join the Navy.

01:15:26I was on the USS George H.W. Bush.

01:15:29Our main goal was to carry all kinds of helicopters and cargo planes and, of course, fighter jets.

01:15:36And when you get to the ship, the least ranking person usually has toilet duty.

01:15:41I had to make sure throughout the day that the toilets were clean, which was crazy.

01:15:46Then I finally got an opportunity to work on all kinds of machinery.

01:15:50We'd rebuild pumps, boilers, air compressors.

01:15:53It definitely was a very tough job.

01:15:55We worked a lot of hours.

01:15:56When you're working that much, it'll suck the soul out of you.

01:16:00And I read on a magazine, sing and release endorphins in your brain, and it makes you happy.

01:16:05I had a whole room to myself at the belly of the boat, and I just started singing.

01:16:10I could sing as loud as I want.

01:16:11Everybody would bring their guitars down there, and we'd have big jam sessions.

01:16:15It literally brought my spirits up.

01:16:17I went nine months singing every day, and I realized that I think I had a voice.

01:16:21When he got out of the military, we would go to some of his little gigs, and we're like, oh

01:16:29my gosh, our boy can sing.

01:16:33When I got out of the Navy, I just started gigging.

01:16:36My band's called Marshall.

01:16:38We've been gigging for 10, 20 people, and then we've moved on to playing massive clubs.

01:16:43We got to open up for Diamond Rio, one of my favorite 90s country bands.

01:16:51So we're playing music full-time now, traveling the country.

01:16:54One of our favorite venues is a horse festival.

01:16:57We ride horses all day, and then we play music.

01:16:59I kind of worked away my younger years, doing nothing but demanding jobs.

01:17:04So it's kind of fun to be around the things I missed out on while I was in the Navy.

01:17:10It's the final night of the blind auditions.

01:17:12Teams are filling up.

01:17:13There's never been a season with fewer spots available.

01:17:16Gets you a little nervous, but I've been in plenty of different situations where the stress is high,

01:17:21so I'm ready to get on that stage.
