07:16Now someone who's come all the way from England for this show tonight
07:19She released an EP in October
07:21that's been doing really really big things
07:23Please can you give her a very typically
07:25warm Dingle welcome
07:26This is Jesse Blakemore
07:32I thought I was real enough
07:42Don't know why I defended
07:46with us
07:50You've got secrets
07:51I've got seizures
07:53underneath your eyes
07:55Closer than I've been
07:58Leaving me with nothing
08:00To tell your love to breathe
08:02I'll pretend I don't know
08:05What happens
08:06Or you scream
08:10To tell your love to breathe

08:13Does she do it for you
08:15Balance
08:17Brainness
08:18When she look like
08:20I hang with IG

09:09Hoping she's a bitch too
09:12Hated that I miss you
09:14Cause I feel it
09:15When I kiss you
09:17Like I could be a bitch too
09:19Wishing I could treat you

09:34When she look like
09:36I hang with IG

10:41Jessie Bakemore
10:42How do you describe what you make?
10:43I always say it's kind of like
10:44Alt R&B
10:45Yeah
10:46That's kind of maybe indie leaning
10:48Kind of folk leaning
10:49Yeah
10:49I mean you're a gorgeous guitar player
10:51Oh thank you
10:51So when did you first pick up a guitar?
10:53When I was quite young
10:54So my dad has played guitars around me
10:56Since I was a kid
10:57I always like had that around me
10:59I got really shy about performing
11:01So I kind of stopped for a couple years
11:02And then when I was maybe like 15, 16
11:05I started to think
11:06Oh actually I really enjoy this
11:07So let me just throw myself into it
11:08Yeah
11:08And were you writing songs then as well?
11:10Yeah I was
11:11I mean they're probably pretty bad songs
11:13But yeah just always writing
11:15I used to love like poetry too
11:17So just always writing stuff
11:18Writing my thoughts down
11:19And was there a moment when you
11:22Did perform where you kind of felt like
11:26Okay this could be something
11:28Yeah I mean it's weird
11:29Because I think a lot of it was
11:30Is like has been online
11:31Yeah
11:32So like so kind of performing
11:33To my phone which is kind of weird
11:35And there were a couple videos
11:36I posted a while back
11:37That got a bit of attention
11:38And I was like
11:39Okay this is actually feels good
11:40Yeah
11:40This could be something
11:41Maybe we gave it too many chances
11:45Fuck it
11:46What's one more?
11:52And I could give a fuck if your boyfriend's waiting at home
11:59Home
12:00I miss the way you made me feel
12:05Come and visit that thought
12:08Let the apathy build

13:58Spending
13:59All the things I said you know I never meant
14:01Ears fill the heat
14:02When our conversation's done
14:04Talking about you in my sleep
14:05You know that I could say it's wrong
14:06A lie
14:08Well maybe I could say it's true

14:34Thank you so much for singing
14:37Thank you so much for singing
15:01I can't talk to you
15:13To your
15:14Oh
15:20You
15:30Your
17:02You're Californian, but you met here in Ireland?
17:04Yeah, yeah, yeah.
17:05Well, my mum's Irish, so that was kind of my connection to Dublin.
17:08But yeah, I moved back.
17:10I was in the States for 10 years in upstate New York.
17:13And then I moved to Dublin kind of because of the music scene.
17:16Honestly, I came over for a weekend just after COVID.
17:18And I was like hanging out with all these just amazing music.
17:22There's so much music.
17:22The Wallopers were just starting to come up.
17:24They were around.
17:25Our friends, Lemoncello, were playing.
17:27Lancôme was around.
17:29Scratched.
17:29I was like, wow, what is happening here?
17:31And it was a lot more exciting for me musically than New York was.
17:35So I moved in 2022.
17:37I came here in 2016 to do a master's at UCD in music.
17:44And I was just like so into Trout that I wanted to come to Ireland and hear it and just
17:49learn more about it too.
17:51Originally, the idea was to exchange a banjo lesson for a guitar lesson, which never happened.
17:55We just started kind of noodling.
17:57And then a friend of mine had lent us or lent me a car battery and a little PA, a
18:03really shitty little PA.
18:04And we went and we played outside the Burger King on Grafton Street.
18:06And we just started busking.
18:07There was never any real goal other than like it was sick being able to make rent busking.
18:12It's like we didn't have to get jobs.
18:14You know what I mean?
18:14That was kind of the end goal.
18:16And the result is have at it.
18:20The brand new, the record from Doug.
18:22Can you tell me a little bit about that transatlantic sound that's on the record?
18:27Yeah, I wouldn't call it trad music per se.
18:30Like we're inspired by, you know, Love Planckstie and stuff.
18:33But we're kind of not really welcomed into any of the groups fully, you know, and that's okay.
18:37Like when we're in TSA and they're asking about the banjo or whatever,
18:41and they say, what kind of music do you play?
18:42We just say Americana folk music.
18:44We really like songs a lot, and we're very into writing songs, the two.
18:51Well, here's to love and here's to hope.
18:55Here's to loss and letting go.
18:57Here's to hitting off the mark.
19:00Here's to the changing of the guard that comes around.
19:07Here's to shame and here's to glory.
19:09Here's to brand new origin stories.
19:12Here's to take and flight and fall and here's to getting back up and walk and we'll come around.
19:20Well, can't you feel it?
19:23Can't you see?
19:24It's the year of Jubilee.
19:26Grab your shovel, let's get going.
19:29There's no one way in on.
19:31Can't you feel it?
19:33Can't you see?
19:34It's the year.
19:35The year of Jubilee.
19:55Well, here's to hurting, here's to traveling, here's to building and dismantling.
20:02Here's to holding your composure, here's to letting instinct take hold, it'll come around.
20:12Here's to swinging at operations, here's to hitting the deck and missing.
20:17Here's to wiping off your brow with a bloody butcher's towel, it'll come around.
20:24Well, can't you feel it, can't you see?
20:29It's the year of Jubilee.
20:31Grab your shovel, let's get going.
20:34There's no one way in on.
20:36Can't you feel it, can't you see?
20:38It's the year.
20:40The year of Jubilee.
21:00Well, here's to endless conversations, here's to late night observations.
21:07Here's to plans made in the dark, here's to hitting off the mark, it'll come around.
21:16Here's the lines and here's the clues, here's the love I made for you.
21:22Here's the home we'll build together, here's the door we'll paint bright yellow, it'll come around.
21:29Well, can't you feel it, can't you see?
21:33It's the year of Jubilee.
21:36Grab your shovel, let's get going.
21:38There's no one way in on.
21:41Can't you feel it, can't you see?
21:43It's the year.
21:44The year of Jubilee.
21:48Can't you feel it, can't you see?
21:50It's the year.
21:52The year of Jubilee.
22:11Suburban nightmares, the city's the start.
22:14You went to school, but you never got tired.
22:17Nothing worth teaching, nothing worth knowing.
22:19You never go anywhere worth going.
22:22You just got nothing better to do.
22:24See you hang around, piling up people who want to get high in the afternoon.
22:30And tell you that the opening clock.
22:33You always doing nothing.
22:35Especially ain't nothing better to do.
22:38You always doing nothing.
22:40Especially ain't nothing better to do.
22:48You've been waiting on the wrong side of life.
22:51Finding too much enjoyment in pursuing strife.
22:53Hugging out your thoughts onto the internet.
22:56You've been bought so long.
22:57You started to forget you.
22:58There's no, there's a lot in your right hand.
23:01And you can make God laugh if you tell him your plans.
23:04I was running and complaining.
23:06That's why you suck shit right in the car.
23:09You always doing nothing.
23:12That's just a way nothing better to do.
23:14You always doing nothing.
23:17That's just a way nothing better to do.
23:20Getting high in the afternoon.
23:22Spending money you ain't got.
23:25You always doing nothing better to do.
23:27That's what I suck shit right in the car.
23:37You are just a way nothing better to do.
23:57I'm free to do.
23:58That's what I suck shit right in the car.
23:59Crack at the pub
24:00You always wanted and complaining
24:03That's right, it sucks, shit
24:04Crack at the pub
24:05You always doing nothing
24:09There's no way nothing better than you
24:11You always doing nothing
24:14That's right, it sucks, shit
24:15Crack at the pub
24:16Getting high in the afternoon
24:18Setting stupid like a million
24:21Now it's going and complaining
24:24That's right, it sucks, shit
24:25Crack at the pub
24:40You guys, both in the way you talk in interviews
24:43And the way you write music
24:44Have like spoken a lot about
24:46The omnipresence of hypocrisy and cowardice
24:50Around the world
24:50So in that context let's talk about Cutthroat
24:53Which is such a banger of an album
24:55It's restored some of the fight in me for sure
24:58And I was feeling a bit lethargic
25:00I'm glad
25:00So will you talk to me about the approach to Cutthroat
25:03And your wonderful producer
25:05I mean, I think, yeah
25:07John Congleton, who's the producer in the record
25:09Really steered the ship
25:10I think in the studio
25:13When we were kind of shaping it
25:15It was all quite excessive, I think
25:18You know, like with the title track Cutthroat
25:20We were just like, let's go all the way
25:22Or Lampiao
25:23You know, let's go sort of all the way with that
25:26You know, where it's sort of
25:27With the Brazilian Portuguese
25:28And then with the electronic side
25:31It was all a big combination
25:32But yeah, I mean, Sean, you know, did a lot of the writing
25:35So
25:36Yeah, I think it's funny, I find
25:38Especially with our process
25:39We usually have a thing where
25:40We think about things too much
25:43For about a six, seven month period
25:45And we kind of don't get anything
25:47I'm sure you've experienced this yourself, you know
25:49And we kind of, we don't do it
25:51We don't do anything
25:53Everyone's miserable
25:54Nothing good's coming
25:54And then we kind of
25:55You know, especially when John came in
25:57I think his ethos is very much
25:59I think we need this a lot
26:00Which is someone to kind of make decisions
26:02Because I think we're so democratic
26:04And there's five of us
26:05That it can quite quickly grind to a halt
26:07And so he kind of came
26:08Because he's overrated actually in bands
26:10It is, it is
26:10It is overrated, yeah
26:12And he kind of just came in
26:14And you know, I think he just really pushed us
26:16To just not think about it
26:17And just write songs and finish songs
26:19And that's kind of, you know
26:21So it feels like the album took a year and a bit to make
26:24But really it was probably like a three month period
26:26Where it just kind of
26:27We were just like, for fuck's sake
26:29Let's just stop overthinking all this
26:31And we just kind of got it done really quick
26:32But it was a really nice kind of cosy album experience
26:36And it was really, there was no stress
26:37There was no fighting
26:38It was the most easy album we've ever recorded, I think
26:41I call the Maria Bonita
26:46Levanta vai fazer café
26:50O dia ja fangendoi
26:53A policia ja t'agitei
26:57Well let me tell you a little story
26:59About a big bad motherfucker called Lampiao
27:02The Dubner of the backlands
27:04Sailor from the black sands
27:06With a philip knife and a strong hand
27:09He copped out a lot most won't ever understand
27:11And if you want a guy looking for him
27:14And if you want a guy looking for him
27:14You can still hear his name
27:15Once considered a dog feast in Teresia Brazil
27:19Olympia!
27:20Where are you now?
27:24Olympia!
27:26Where are you now?
27:37Olympia!
27:38Where are you now?

28:22Well, they caught him in the end, executed him in his love and his kangaseros.
28:27They let their heads hang for public display on the streets of Salvador, along with its
28:32name remained in the stories of football.
28:34I did not place where the water runs white, some say it's gunshot but still lighting up the night.

30:33This is our last song.
30:35Cheers.
30:55Well, my nails ain't not a car, and my voice ain't the best you've heard, and you can
31:03use that ain't my word, but you might give a fuck.
31:09Socks and wool, shoes I've worn, along the side keeps it filled with smoke.
31:17What if something you're not going for, but I'm still breathing?
31:22Well, I'm not want to look at, and I ain't want to hear.
31:30What if you think I love you?
31:33You got me what I tell.
31:37Well, I'm not want to look at, and I ain't want to hear.
31:43But if you think I love you, you got me what I tell.
31:51You got me what I tell.
31:52You got me what I tell.
32:13You got me what I tell.
32:16You got me what I tell.
32:17You got me what I tell.
32:20You got me what I tell.
32:24You got me what I tell.
32:27You got me what I tell.
32:31You got me what I tell.
32:34You got me what I tell.
32:38You got me what I tell.
32:41You got me what I tell.
32:43You got me what I tell.
32:44You got me what I tell.
32:45You got me what I tell.
32:45You got me what I tell.
32:46You got me what I tell.
32:46I'm not going to die, I'm not going to die.
32:52And I ain't forced to heal.
32:55But if you think I love you, you die to worry I'll heal.
33:04And you're cleared to conflict.
33:07And you're cleared to conflict.
33:10And you're cleared to conflict.
33:13Just let go.
33:18And you're cleared to conflict.
33:21And you're cleared to conflict.
33:24And you're cleared to conflict.
33:27Just let go.
33:28Just let go.
34:02Thank you very much, single!
34:08And now, let's all get y'all.
34:11Thank you very fuckin' much, cheers!
34:29So, my next song is a cover, it's one of my favourite songs, it's called X Factor by Lauren Hill.
34:35Whoa! Yeah, I love it so much, so if you know the words, please sing with me.
34:57It could all be so simple.
35:04But you'd rather make it hard.
35:11See, lovely you is like a battle.
35:19And we both end up with scars.
35:24Tell me who I have to be.
35:31To get some rest of prostitutes.
35:39See, no one loves you more than me.
35:46No one ever will.
35:53Is this just a silly game?
36:00The force is you to act this way.
36:08The force is you to scream my name.
36:16And pretend like you can stay.
36:21See, I know what we've got to do.
36:28You let go, I'll let go too.
36:36See, no one's hurt me more than you.
36:43And no one ever will.
36:47No matter how I think we grow.
36:52You always seem to let me know.
36:55It ain't working.
36:58It ain't working.
37:01It ain't working.
37:01And when I try to walk away.
37:06You urge yourself to make me stay.
37:09This is crazy.
37:13This is crazy.
37:17Care for me, care for me.
37:20Said that you're there for me, there for me.
37:23Said you would cry for me.
37:26But would you live for me?
37:32Care for me, care for me
37:34Said that you're there for me, there for me, there for me
37:38Said you would cry for me
37:41But would you live for me
37:45Would you live for me
37:51Would you cry
37:59But would you live for me
38:09Would you live for me
38:13Thank you so much
38:46My house is just twelve years old
38:49Soft landscaping in my car
38:53Electrician stuffies
38:54Figuring the global child and your lover
38:58High boy
39:01Every day
39:02He's a big
39:04Strong one, no one
39:07Out of both looking at the world
39:08I get upset and weird
39:20Spooning constantly, people constantly
39:22Step on me
39:28His shadow looks awry
39:30The feeling of fear's legs on my face
39:35Sleep inside a secret world
39:37It's one
39:41Life
39:42His different shapes with his shoes
39:45Trapped as screaming
39:49Last thing I've done
39:51This hunger
39:52Was a
39:53Human
39:54Or
39:54Soul
39:55Well
39:56Hell
39:57Situations
39:58Ringing
39:58To all that
39:59I'm sure
40:01There it goes
40:02A busy care
40:04Must
40:05The angry
40:05Scrumble
40:06Souls
40:09Yes
40:09Is
40:10What
40:10The
40:10What
40:10Is
40:11The
40:11It's
40:11It's
40:11Pulled
40:13The
40:13Of
40:13The
40:14The
40:16The
40:18The
40:19I hope every day is a gift, it's got one, no lie, don't have your brother, no one will be
40:29done, it's fine, you can't step in, you can't step in, you can't step in, you can't step in, you
40:33can't step in, you can't step in, I'd like to run away with you on a plane, but don't make
40:41those images,
40:46my soul has gone too strong, with two names of beans, with espresso, that's the buzzer solutions for hope so,
40:54it's my heart, I'm sitting at you, we're often through that.
41:06I'm gonna tell this snake and I keep it in mind with the...
41:13Oh, well...

44:16Tom and Lewis, have you spotted any wild animals this morning so far?
44:20Just in a hybrid of a duck and a seal.
44:21I reckon two ducks actually.
44:23We don't have much wildlife where we live.
44:24Where do you live?
44:25Because you formed in South London.
44:27You're actually from there as well.
44:28Yeah, I grew up around there.
44:30You grew up around the corner.
44:31That is a seal, seriously.
44:32You reckon?
44:33No, it's not really.
44:34Take us back to the origins then of dry cleaning.
44:38Were you all friends?
44:39I imagine you all grew up in nursery together.
44:42You were all mates since birth.
44:43That's when the band started, wasn't it?
44:44Like rug rats.
44:47So I met Flo at art college and she introduced me to my partner who was friends with Lewis
44:54and Nick and so we just started hanging out as a social group really, probably for about
45:00three or four years before we even talked about doing a band.
45:02I feel like there was a moment where we was all in lots of different projects and there
45:06was a moment where we were all freed up.
45:09We had three times.
45:09Yeah, they're all sort of ending naturally.
45:10At the same time.
45:11So it was like, let's just have a jam, the three of us.
45:13So he used to go for Sundays over at his mum's, in his mum's garage and she'd cook us a
45:17Sunday
45:18dinner and...
45:18We did like 10 minutes of playing and about four hours of eating.
45:21Yeah.
45:21Yeah.
45:21And then eventually your mum started going, are you going to do any work today?
45:25Yeah.
45:26So that's when we took it seriously.
45:27Yeah.
45:29Florence's lyrics are sometimes hilarious.
45:31Sometimes deeply, deeply intriguing.
45:34Indeed.
45:35When do you hear Florence's lyrics for the first time in the band?
45:40It varies a lot.
45:41So it depends on kind of the room we're rehearsing in.
45:43A lot of times we're in a room where we can't really hear much, right?
45:46It's like a really small room.
45:48So Flo might just have some in-ears in and be hearing herself.
45:51And then now again we're projecting to the room.
45:53But you can only hear like rhythms and kind of like slight melodies and kind of, and you
45:57play against that.
45:58So a lot of times it's not to the studio.
45:59But it kind of varies record by record and song by song.
46:01Sometimes you get it really early.
46:03Sometimes you don't get it until you've recorded it.
46:06Yeah.
46:07And when it comes to playing live then, I'm guessing there's no room for like lyrical improvisation
46:13from Florence, is there?
46:15It depends.
46:16When we sort of do like a headline tour, it does open up a bit more because you sort of
46:21get a chance to sort of know where you're at with songs.
46:25Songs naturally sort of stretch.
46:27Because when you record a song, it's still quite early in the song's life.
46:30Yeah.
46:31So you get, when you play it live, it comes back to life again.
46:34It has a whole other life as a live song, not a recorded one.
46:37So there is room for improvisation.
46:39Yeah.
46:45I'm a cruise ship designer.
46:52I'm striking while the army's fought.
46:56I'm hoping the most of a bad situation.
46:58Cruises of me business.
47:00I don't personally love them.
47:02But I mean to serve a useful purpose.
47:06I desire very much a place in society.
47:11So designing cruise ships is my custom.
47:13I'm my living.
47:15I'm my challenge.
47:18Designing cruises is really a bridge.
47:21I'm a lesson.
47:22You need to feel all fine.
47:27It's a little bit of the time.
47:29Cruise ship is on here.
47:32I'm striking while the island is home.
47:34I'm striking while the island is home.
47:36I don't know the most of a bad situation.
47:39It's a mountain road.
47:42For a mountain road.
47:44And I design the towers.
47:47That cause controversy.
47:51But I'm a semi-anonibus.
47:54The mountain ladders.
47:56I'm looking back, vicious man.
47:58I believe in design.
48:03Fly and pull out the mountain with a 미land.
48:09I believe in design.
48:09Those they can see.
48:13I'm coming.
48:17I'm rushing.
48:18Who shares our ownenders.
48:19I'm striking while the island is home.
48:23Record mode.
48:23Most striking by the eye in his heart
48:29That situation is a fight we fight
48:32For probably mine
48:54I'm sure that he's the messages in my life
49:08We'll be here next week, same time, same place
49:11With music from Chalk, Miles Kane, Annie Dogg and Travi
49:16See you then
49:26See you then
