00:15I was playing blackjack, bro. You think I would've been a dealer?
00:20F*** you, bitch!
00:21I'm like, f***ing spit on you.
00:23Hey.
00:24No, I don't care. Hey, hey, what?
00:26I'll spit on you. Turn the f*** up.
00:28You stupid ass w***, bitch!
00:30You stupid ass w***, bitch!
00:31Shut the f*** up and get away from me.
00:34I was just, no, you're right.
00:36You just said that you were gonna spit, so now...
00:38No! So I started to lift your hand.
00:40Alright, set up.
00:42I'm gonna grab this and grab it.
00:45So she tried to steal a chip from the table,
00:47and security addressed it, and then she attacked security guards.
00:50She turned around and said, I'm like, I spit on you guys.
00:52I'm f*** you.
00:54It's 1165.
00:54The classic, come on vacation, leave on probation.
00:59Stop it, bitch!
01:01No!
01:05There are over 3,000 jails in the U.S.
01:08Detaining over half a million.
01:10Each one, a world of its own.
01:14Running a jail is tough.
01:16Surviving inside is tougher.
01:18Hit him with the thunder.
01:20Let's go, let's go!
01:21For 120 hours, five days, our cameras are inside.
01:25Stop it now.
01:27Capturing the officers, inmates, and moments that define life behind bars.
01:34I'll be home soon, alright?
01:43Washoe County, Nevada.
01:45Home to Reno.
01:47The biggest little city in the world.
01:49Casinos.
01:50Tourism.
01:52Around the clock entertainment.
01:54This is a very high traffic area, because you can jump off of I-80 and then you're right in
02:01the middle of Reno's downtown.
02:03For decades, organized crime has used Washoe County as a major trafficking route.
02:10In recent years, that activity has intensified.
02:14Seated along the I-80 corridor, a major east-west freeway cutting across the United States.
02:21You kind of see everything.
02:23Drugs, money, human trafficking, sex trafficking.
02:26So, I mean, if you name it, it's been seen coming through on the corridor.
02:32Fifteen minutes north of downtown Reno, sits the Washoe County Jail, home to one of the largest jails in the
02:39state, second only to Las Vegas.
02:42Following in his father's footsteps, Sheriff Darren Balaam begins his day.
02:49My favorite one?
02:50Okay.
02:52That's my wife and I, and then my dad and my father-in-law.
02:55We are second generation law enforcement.
02:58My wife's since retired, but I'm on my 31st year.
03:02She did 20 years.
03:03Her dad did 30-plus.
03:05My dad did 30-plus.
03:06So, it's been ingrained in us.
03:20What's happening?
03:21Doing good?
03:22Yeah, doing great.
03:23Good.
03:30This is the only jail for Washoe County.
03:32So, none through the year, and we've booked 13,000-plus.
03:36So, we'll probably hit, by December, close to 15.
03:39Demo, what are you doing?
03:41How's it going?
03:42Cook, what's up?
03:43How are you today?
03:44You guys were busy.
03:46Yeah.
03:46How many people have we had come in today?
03:48We are at, I think we're at 30.
03:52We just got six going back.
03:54We have a few more that just maybe seem medical.
03:55They'll be going back.
03:56Nice.
03:57So, we'll clear that board for the end of the night.
04:00Yeah.
04:01People don't realize how massive our facility is.
04:06There's 16 units, so there's a lot of square footage to cover.
04:10We can house up to almost 1,350 inmates, but when we hit about 1,200 where we're at now,
04:17we say we're at capacity because you have so many wide varieties of gangs in the Washoe
04:24County area that we have to separate them because what happens on the street will roll
04:28into our jail.
04:32Fueled by Reno's 24-7 nightlife, the Washoe County Jail processes a high volume of DUIs
04:39and misdemeanors.
04:40Ow!
04:41But combating gang activity inside the facility is the jail's number one challenge.
04:47You have MS-13, Sereno gangs, Norteno gangs.
04:51You have the Hells Angels, the Mongols, and the Russia Mafia.
04:55Separating those inmates is a definite challenge all the time.
05:00We have a gentleman that just got booked in for the fifth time this year.
05:05He is a validated Sereno, but that's a good portion of the people that are in our facility.
05:12Unfortunately, that's just the reality.
05:15The Serenos, also known as Southerners, are a Southern California-based gang known for
05:21their strict hierarchy and violent rivalries.
05:23And wherever they operate, their long-standing feud with the Norteños follows.
05:30Norteños are an immediate gang rival.
05:33If a Sereno, an active Sereno, sees a Norteño, they will almost immediately or most likely attack
05:40them.
05:42In the Washoe County Jail, 75% of fights are gang-related.
05:46To reduce risk, gang classification and separating rivals before housing is critical to inmate and
05:53deputy safety.
05:54We're looking at their hands.
05:56We're looking at around their face if they have any insignia of gang affiliation so that
06:01these individuals are housed appropriately.
06:06Last year, the jail recorded 86 inmate fights and 26 batteries on staff.
06:13To maintain control, deputies enforce strict paramilitary rules under the sheriff's authority.
06:25Go ahead.
06:26Keep going.
06:27You're working.
06:29We run a very tight facility here.
06:32We are big on our security.
06:34Sir, turn and face the wall.
06:36When you walk through the halls, make them turn around.
06:39We set rules for a reason.
06:41It's not to be mean to the inmates.
06:43It's for their safety and our safety.
06:44And if they want to attack you, their body has to change and turn.
06:48So you hopefully will see that attack coming.
06:50You see these red lines?
06:52When they send inmates out, they know and they're always told, stop at the red lines.
06:56And so that's just, again, a safety for them, safety for our deputies.
07:00We're big on making sure that we all go home to work and we go home safe.
07:05That is the key.
07:06Bye, you guys.
07:07Bye.
07:08Hey, you too.
07:09Have a good weekend.
07:29In intake, more arrests pour in as booking operations continue without pause.
07:35She was spitting while she was interacting with Reno Police Department.
07:40So she put a spit hood on.
07:43Please don't do this to me.
07:46Please.
07:47Please.
07:49Don't do anything wrong.
07:5219-year-old first-time inmate Gianna Myers makes a phone call.
07:57We were just trying to get a hold of right now.
07:58That's my mom.
08:07I think she's just going to be shocked.
08:09I don't think she'll be mad at me because I didn't really, like, do anything wrong to an extent.
08:14You know what I mean?
08:14But I think she's kind of going to be like, what?
08:17Like, I don't even know.
08:19It's crazy.
08:22I'm 19.
08:23I've never been, like, arrested for anything or even, like, on a ticket.
08:28But I find a little bit of a fight.
08:32And I was arrested for battery.
08:41No fault for me, I guess.
08:52I feel like I'm a pretty good person.
08:55I wouldn't have expected myself to be in this, like, situation.
09:00So, I don't know.
09:01It's definitely interesting, like, the jail socks.
09:05But...
09:07Have you been able to make the phone call?
09:10Um, yeah, I didn't go through.
09:12Oh, okay.
09:13But you were able to make the four-digit PIN and everything?
09:16Okay, just hang in there.
09:18Okay, keep listening for your name.
09:21With our first-timers, when you've never been here before, it's a lot to take in.
09:26From the moment they come into the port where they're getting searched and we're doing an inventory search,
09:30I explain why.
09:31Like, why are you touching me that way?
09:33Like, this is weird.
09:34I do it because that's how I would want to be treated.
09:37If I came into custody and I wasn't in this position, you're going in blind.
09:42It's just like sending a kindergartner off to a sixth-grade class.
09:46Like, they're not going to know anything.
09:47They're not going to know what it's like.
09:49It's scary.
09:50Immediately, there's people, oh, there's murderers here.
09:53They are, but they're held to the same expectation.
09:56If they don't behave, if they're disrespectful, you don't need to know what that guy sitting over there is here
10:02for.
10:02They're getting through the process just like you.
10:06Where'd you go?
10:08Great.
10:10Thanks, darling.
10:10There's nothing here.
10:11Can you see the papers on that?
10:15White chair down here on this black belt.
10:17My face is wood.
10:18Yeah, your face is wood.
10:20Yeah, your face is wood.
10:23Tell me about the only other trouble you've ever been in.
10:26This is the only other trouble.
10:28Well, I got like a ticket one time earlier this summer for not having a life vest on my paddleboard.
10:37But I kind of forgot about it.
10:40I don't know, because it's so minor.
10:43Yeah, perfect. You can go ahead and have a seat. Thank you.
10:50What do you know about this place?
10:53Absolutely nothing. Nothing at all.
10:56Because we can't keep you out here for an extended period of time, while the judge is reviewing your charges
11:01in the report, you'll probably have to end up going to female housing.
11:05We'll go over that and what that looks like, but you'll probably have a cellmate.
11:11Giana prepares to move into a female unit, where she will be housed until her case processes.
11:32Unit 16, the men's pod, houses 144 inmates and a mix of gang affiliations, including Serenios and Bloods.
11:42Groups that are known to co-exist without conflict inside the jail.
11:47Another day being locked down, you kind of get used to the cell living in a way, though.
11:50You get comfortable being in here, and that's just the way it is. It helps you on your routine.
11:55In here, it's . But, I mean, mainly it's because we don't follow the rules.
12:01But in general, the rules are kind of petty, right?
12:04We can't have more than two toothbrushes or we get write-ups.
12:11Officers are preparing for a recreation period sometimes known as Thunderdome.
12:16All 144 inmates are released at the same time.
12:21The three officers on duty are severely outnumbered and must maintain strict control.
12:27So we're just going to pop every door and then have them stand by their door until they're quiet.
12:30And then when they're quiet, we admonish them, and then they enjoy their tear.
12:33And then usually in five minutes, they lose 15 minutes.
12:35Because how loud and obnoxious they get, you can hear it all the way down the hallway through these glass
12:39doors
12:40and through the gorilla door at the end of the hall if you don't keep them quiet.
12:42You want to turn that TV down?
12:44You're going to hear a verbal articulation before you're going to see a physical one.
12:47So if we can hear two guys yelling across the day room, we'll be able to tell if they're going
12:51to fight before it actually happens.
12:54Ready?
12:55Yeah, that's it.
12:58Tear time.
12:59All right, gentlemen. You guys know our rules. If you are loud, we will lock you down.
13:12Stay seated in the day room. Enjoy your tear.
13:21Here, I got scored.
13:23Who's all playing?
13:24Him. I played too.
13:25Okay, you.
13:26That was cute.
13:28I'm telling you, you were set, bro.
13:30You're not playing the game.
13:33Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
13:34JL, this is where mastery is.
13:37Yeah, for sure.
13:42So this is a thunder dome. There's 144 tops in here, so.
13:47So it does get loud.
13:49Yeah.
13:49That's why they call it thunder dome.
13:50They say where the loud is. If the sergeant can hear us way down there.
13:53Yeah, we're in trouble.
13:55Yeah, they're like, you guys.
13:57That's right.
13:57You know?
13:59Due to a heavy Sereno presence and the intermingling of other gangs, jail politics rule daily life inside the unit.
14:07Race and gang affiliations dictate where inmates sit, who they associate with, and can determine who is protected and who
14:14is exposed.
14:15These rules are in effect for a reason to kind of keep the peace.
14:20Issues always happen here and there.
14:23Sometimes it pops off.
14:26But it's nothing that we can't settle ourselves.
14:30Let's say a white dude has a problem with Sereno, right?
14:34Whoever the shot callers are will come together and then talk about, like, hey, there's an issue with this.
14:41Can we resolve it to where it doesn't escalate into a problem for everybody, cops included?
14:50I'm not going to tell you again. Sit down.
14:53Is it an issue?
14:54Yes, you have a problem sitting down.
14:56I dare it.
14:56I said that.
14:57Okay, wait. Keep staring at me.
14:59Don't get a mad dog.
15:06Holy .
15:07All right.
15:09I think we're playing one, honey.
15:11Oh, yeah.
15:13Holy .
15:14Now we locked down.
15:17We'll get that tomorrow.
15:35We have security checks that we have to do every 30 minutes in the housing unit.
15:42So in the .
15:44What?
15:48I didn't mess anything up.
15:49You've got to talk to the women in this housing unit that are doing it.
15:54This housing unit that we're in houses all of the females in the jail.
15:58There are 56 cells, and right now I have 125 women.
16:07As the jail's only female general population unit, inmates are housed three to a cell, heightening stress and the potential
16:15for conflict.
16:16Ladies.
16:17Hi.
16:19How are we doing?
16:19Pretty cramped.
16:21It's hard not to get in each other's way, but, you know, we do okay.
16:26We're dead.
16:26We make it work without killing each other's way.
16:32Some of the girls have been here a long time, so I know them.
16:35You know, sometimes they'll give you a joke or a laugh while you're walking around, which is, which makes light
16:40of their situation.
16:42And then us having to relock, and then us having to obviously do our detention part of it.
16:51With male housing, there are more gang issues like the Serenio issue.
16:55With female housing, it's more of a bullying type thing than it is politicking.
17:00There's a lot of this person smells, this person's not clean.
17:04That's their way of doing it.
17:05They're more sneaky about it.
17:06Are you two in here screaming?
17:10Okay.
17:11Okay.
17:13We have women that are detoxing.
17:14We have women that are in here for the first time.
17:17We have women that are convicts that have been to prison.
17:19They come back.
17:20And then we have women that are pregnant.
17:23Can you back up?
17:27Are you both getting commissary today?
17:29Yeah.
17:29Okay.
17:30Man, you still got commissary from last time.
17:33You guys are rationing it.
17:35And I lost two pounds.
17:37You weren't feeling too hot this morning?
17:38Yeah.
17:39I haven't heard you do that since earlier in your pregnancy.
17:42So, you, I've said, no, I get it.
17:44Like, you can't help that.
17:45You're going through it.
17:46You're pregnant.
17:47Rodriguez, 16.
17:50I've been incarcerated my whole life.
17:53Maybe 12, 13 times.
17:57I've been here this time for two months.
18:00Allegedly, I am facing some fraud charges.
18:04I'm 40 and pregnant.
18:06I'm 19 weeks.
18:08I'm almost halfway there.
18:10100% will be incarcerated when I have this baby.
18:13How are you doing?
18:14I'm all right.
18:15I was sick this morning.
18:16The first time I had a child, I was 21.
18:21I have messed up drastically with my other kids.
18:25I'm given a second chance to be a mom, to do things right.
18:31Yeah.
18:34Okay.
18:36Once a week, inmates receive commissary, available only to those who have funds in their accounts,
18:43allowing them to purchase personal items and food not offered by the jail's kitchen.
18:49For inmate Rodriguez, commissary is essential as she manages her pregnancy inside the jail.
18:56Ready to cook?
18:58I'm going to make potato burritos.
19:01And I'm going to be bad today.
19:03I'm going to eat some spicy food, even though I'm not supposed to.
19:06My baby's going to make me regret it instantly.
19:11What are you doing here with the bag?
19:13This is how we get our potatoes.
19:14Okay.
19:14We rehydrate them.
19:17It's hard to eat being pregnant, especially with the textures of the sandwiches,
19:20because they do puree everything while I'm not pregnant.
19:24And I can't eat this stuff.
19:26It's bad.
19:27It's bad.
19:29This commissary has like the bare minimum.
19:32So you make something with what you got.
19:34And then you try to recreate things that make you feel, like remind you of home.
19:39Nothing ever is good as home where your mom's cooking.
19:44I definitely feel for Miss Rodriguez because I'm married.
19:48I do have three kiddos.
19:49I don't know how she gets through the day.
19:52If she's craving something, it's not like she can go to the store and just grab it.
19:58We're going to steam our burritos.
20:00We don't get microwaves here.
20:02Some places have microwaves.
20:04We're not that fancy.
20:08The water's hot.
20:11I forgot which one was mine.
20:15I'm going to guess this is yours.
20:16Okay, good.
20:17All right.
20:18Cheers.
20:21That'll tap it.
20:24This is definitely yours.
20:29We don't have cooties.
20:33Meanwhile, on the other side of the unit.
20:36Who was that?
20:41All right, ladies.
20:42What is going on?
20:46I'm not asking you.
20:47I'm asking this right now because you're the one that's been screaming.
20:51I know you said you feel like .
20:52I called the nurse.
20:54You're on everything that they can put you on.
20:56You screaming isn't going to fix anything.
21:01I'm not saying you did anything wrong.
21:03I'm not here to judge you.
21:04I'm here to run a housing unit and keep everybody safe.
21:06And this that you two are doing is not helping either of you.
21:09I know this is your first time here, but that's no excuse.
21:16Stop.
21:24Stop.
21:25No, we're done.
21:27Pack up all your .
21:29I have it.
21:29Washoe County, Nevada.
21:31In the female housing unit, Deputy Baker and her partner attempt to manage a dispute between two new cellmates.
21:38This that you two are doing is not helping either of you.
21:41I know this is your first time here, but that's no excuse.
21:44I didn't know I was going to be attacked.
21:46I didn't attack her.
21:47That's bull .
21:49I know you didn't attack her.
21:50You were yelling at me.
21:52I just saw that bull .
21:54Can you just take her out?
21:55Please don't hurt me.
21:56I'm not hurting you.
21:57Let's go.
21:58Let's go.
21:59Stand up.
22:00Stand up.
22:01Come on.
22:02Let me get my shoe on.
22:03Let's go.
22:03Let's go.
22:04Don't worry about your shoes.
22:06You're doing the wrong person.
22:08I'm moving you because obviously she's detoxing,
22:12and you two can't get along, OK?
22:13So you're going to be in the cell by yourself.
22:19Did she hit you while you were in there?
22:22No, she's just tweeting at me.
22:25If someone's strong-arming you to do something,
22:27you need to hit your button and say something, OK?
22:29Because that's not OK.
22:30As a deputy, you're always thinking security issue,
22:33but a lot of it is how you treat them.
22:35They're still people.
22:36Why that doesn't make me lax, I mean,
22:38if you're going to punch your ticket,
22:40you're going to ride the ride.
22:41If you're going to get asked up, then I'll meet you there.
22:44But for the most part, I'm not going to push somebody
22:47if they don't need to be.
22:57We are going in to check on Miss Gianna.
23:02Deputy Smith checks in on first-time inmate Gianna Myers
23:05after her first night in custody.
23:09She's just laying there, staring at the ceiling.
23:12She has a new cellmate, so that is one thing with the people
23:18that are coming in and out of intake.
23:20Your cellmates will change very frequently.
23:23And you got along with one person just fine,
23:26and then the new person is detoxing off of fentanyl,
23:30like absolutely miserable out of her mind, throwing up.
23:34So it's very difficult to be in these cells.
23:36You have to share a very confined space.
23:39Most people don't want to do that with their family members,
23:41let alone a complete stranger, so...
23:44Good morning.
23:46Not yet.
23:48Not yet.
23:49How are you?
23:50I'm good. How about yourself?
23:52How's your stay?
23:54It was all right.
23:55It was all right?
23:57I don't know.
23:58The first half was all right.
23:59The second half, I was like, let me out of here.
24:02I don't like it.
24:04You're not supposed to like it.
24:06I know.
24:07I took like a nap yesterday, and then I woke up
24:09and I thought it was a lot later,
24:10and then I thought it was like five years later.
24:12Mm-hmm.
24:13The time goes by very soon.
24:14Yeah.
24:15You just got to keep your mind busy.
24:17You have a book.
24:18I can read.
24:18Okay.
24:18What happened at court?
24:20I didn't go, but they gave me a paper
24:23saying I have to come back next week or sometime around then.
24:26Probably have to check in.
24:27Yeah.
24:27I'm assuming what the judge did is he reviewed your report,
24:30and it wasn't necessary for you to go to the Zoom appearance
24:34here in the facility.
24:36But as soon as we get word that you're getting released,
24:39I'll come and get you, okay?
24:41All right.
24:41We'll be back soon, okay?
24:54In intake, deputies classify an arrestee with gang affiliations
24:59and work quickly to assess housing options
25:01to reduce the risk of conflict.
25:04Where do you want them?
25:07Seaweed?
25:08Yeah.
25:09Good job.
25:11When they come in, they get asked questions
25:13such as who do they used to affiliate with
25:15because this is mainly a Serenio jail,
25:18and so if they're northerners, they're usually separated
25:20at least initially until classification.
25:23You can talk to them and put them in a safe housing unit.
25:26All right.
25:27I'm going to take this hand off and put on top of your head,
25:29all right?
25:31He's trying to drop out of his gang.
25:34He isn't trying to be a part of it anymore.
25:36So with that, he can't be around any active gang members,
25:40just for his safety.
25:43A little more important.
25:56In the women's unit, five months pregnant Amanda Rodriguez
26:00navigates daily life behind bars while awaiting her case.
26:05Pregnancy sucks because it does, especially in here.
26:10She's going to put on birth control.
26:11Thanks to me.
26:12Yeah.
26:14If I have to be here, I'm picking the officer
26:17that's going to be cutting my child's umbilical cord.
26:20So I have two chosen.
26:22So depending on which one actually gets to be there,
26:24one doesn't have any kids and this will be her form of birth control.
26:28She said because I have all C-sections,
26:30so she will be experiencing all my intestines outside of my stomach.
26:40And I promised I was going to get none of them for child support.
26:44The officers, not the dad.
26:48I'm kidding.
26:50I just want to make sure the baby's healthy.
26:52This is why you don't come to jail.
26:56I don't know why it's something that keeps coming back to you.
27:00That's too old for this.
27:12Can I hold in for a minute?
27:14Yeah.
27:16All right, all the way.
27:18Oh.
27:20In Central Command,
27:21officers receive a report of inappropriate comments
27:24made by inmate workers about Deputy Smith.
27:28Sergeant Franchak interrogates the inmate workers
27:31to determine whether disciplinary action is warranted.
27:34Which one of you must disrespect my female deputies?
27:38I am not going to tolerate my deputies being disrespected the way you just had.
27:43This is one and one only chance that I'm going to give you.
27:45I'm going to fire every single one of you.
27:47Do you understand me?
27:49Yes, sir.
27:49Yes, sir.
27:50Being part of the kitchen workforce in Washoe County is a privileged position.
27:55Workers are housed separately and receive benefits that many inside the jail do not.
28:00If you get to disrespect my deputies, be a man and stand up.
28:04Which one?
28:05Only one will get tired.
28:07Or all of you.
28:09That is up to you.
28:11Not one?
28:13All right.
28:13This entire group is fired.
28:16Walk out.
28:17Single file line.
28:18Line up by the shower.
28:19Make sure we get every single name.
28:21Send an email to classification so that way they can hire more workers.
28:25Looks like we got a lot of people here that are going to mumble.
28:28No one wants a man out of the sand.
28:31He said he was the one that happened to me.
28:33It was you?
28:34Right.
28:41Looks like we got a lot of people here that are going to mumble.
28:44No one wants a man out of the sand.
28:48Following reports of verbal harassment targeting Deputy Smith,
28:51Sergeant Franchak works to identify those responsible.
28:55He was one that happened there.
28:57It was you?
28:59Get him from the line.
29:02So he's fired.
29:05Thank you, partner.
29:06The rest of you get to keep your jobs.
29:08I appreciate you guys' honesty, but there are consequences to your options.
29:12And I thank you all my female deputies.
29:14I have an apology.
29:15Really?
29:16I'm sorry.
29:17.
29:18Do you have sisters, mom, female, baby?
29:22Would you talk to them and do that kind of to them?
29:24No, that's why I apologize.
29:25Okay, thank you.
29:26I appreciate it.
29:27Figure it out.
29:28All right.
29:29We don't tolerate that, especially when it comes to female deputies.
29:33There is no room for it in this facility.
29:35They all have mothers, sisters, and, you know, so, yeah.
29:40We try to set an example and try to get them on a better path for this one.
29:47I appreciate you.
29:48Of course.
29:58How are you guys doing today?
30:00Good, man.
30:00How are you?
30:01Doing pretty good.
30:02Just, you know, chilling, you know.
30:04I've been in here, you know.
30:06And then two more.
30:08Me too.
30:09In the men's pod, inmates are preparing a large meal for tonight.
30:15Oh.
30:17What are you taking?
30:18Yum, yum.
30:18I call them yum, yum.
30:20Oh, yeah?
30:20Yeah, it's, uh, uh, topped ramen, beans, got some rice in it, jalapenos, and you got the
30:28sauces to top it off.
30:29It's amazing.
30:30Master sauce and Thai sauce.
30:32It's probably like a $50, $60 meal.
30:36So, we all go in on it, and we're doing it for Monday night, football tonight.
30:40Monday night, San Francisco, guys.
30:43I'm from Hollywood.
30:44I'm a Rams fan.
30:45Yeah.
30:45Yeah.
30:46How did you end up out here?
30:48My family is a gang member.
30:50When I started hanging out with the wrong crowd, and now here I am, I'm all the way
30:55to prison.
30:57But it's never too late.
30:58I'm working on myself, bettering myself, and hopefully one day I'll get it.
31:02You know?
31:04How do you end up out here?
31:06I'm from Chile.
31:06I came to San Francisco first.
31:08And then after 15 years, I moved to Reno because of family.
31:12Seven months ago, I was involved in an accident.
31:15Yeah.
31:16I'm fighting right now.
31:17I'm a 53-year-old.
31:18First time being in jail, and we hope for the best.
31:22I had a life.
31:23Low-awaiting citizen.
31:25And sometimes you make one mistake, and your life can change.
31:28360 degrees.
31:33It's tricky navigating all the politics and stuff in here as a first-timer.
31:37Totally.
31:38100%.
31:39It's difficult.
31:40Because I wasn't born here, they told me I'm a paisa.
31:42Paisa is someone who is Latino, no more in the United States.
31:46Wow.
31:47And you want to talk to them, and be part of that sector, you know?
31:52It's all segregated by race, you know?
31:54And you sit at the wrong table, and they start getting upset.
31:58You know what I mean?
31:58So, 53 years old.
32:01Low-awaiting citizen, never, not even a speeding ticket.
32:04He was scared at first, you know?
32:06And I'm showing them the ropes, as they say.
32:10Just so you got whites, you got blacks, you got natives, you got others.
32:15Which others would be the guy next door.
32:17But we become really good friends.
32:19And he doesn't run anything, he's not racist.
32:21Okay, so he sits wherever he wants, does whatever he wants.
32:23Polishing, it's not good, man.
32:26You know what I mean?
32:27Like, you're pretty much gonna get in trouble a lot, and you're gonna, you know, prolong your
32:33time from getting back home with your family.
32:36How many of these are you gonna make?
32:38How many?
32:3812.
32:3912?
32:40Yeah.
32:40We'll let you make some more.
32:42Alright, we'll let you make some more.
32:49May HP?
32:50Yeah.
32:54You ready?
32:56Are you sure?
32:57I don't think you are.
32:58I am so sure.
33:01Yeah.
33:02Grab all of your stuff, pack it all up, put it in your bin.
33:06First time inmate Gianna Myers is being released after the processing of her case.
33:12Yeah.
33:14Y'all come back to this place, please.
33:17Hi, Mom.
33:18I don't wanna see you.
33:20I don't either.
33:22Maybe somewhere else, like at Walmart or somewhere, but.
33:24Alright.
33:25Not yet.
33:26Perfect, yep.
33:30Make sure we're gonna get you changed out into your clothing.
33:32Okay.
33:32Go over your court viewer.
33:34Make sure that you get all of your property back that you came with.
33:37And we'll get you out of here, okay?
33:39Okay.
33:40Now you can put your bin down.
33:42You're gonna put the Washoe County issued clothing in the bin.
33:45Here's your clothing.
33:46Let me know when you're done because you're locked in, okay?
33:51Gianna, she's very respectful.
33:52And we appreciate that because this isn't easy to get people through the process when they've been here for the
34:00first time.
34:01All done?
34:02Yes.
34:02Perfect.
34:03It's a lot to take in.
34:04And you see so many different waves of emotions when you come into the facility.
34:08You see people immediately start bawling.
34:11You see people get frustrated, angry.
34:14So, the fact that she was super respectful through her process makes our job a lot easier.
34:20And then we're gonna go down to this counter right over here and go over paperwork, okay?
34:25So, how are you doing right now?
34:27Still kind of shocked, but I'm very happy to play.
34:29I'm so happy to be out.
34:30This is acknowledging that you're getting all of your property back.
34:34I just had, like, really bad anxiety just because I wanted to go home.
34:39And I feel like it's not really, like, my place either.
34:42I'm not liking the people in there.
34:44No shade to them at all.
34:46But, I don't know.
34:48So, just make sure you check in or you'll get rearrested.
34:52I don't want that.
34:54You didn't enjoy staying here?
34:56No, not really.
34:57Okay.
34:58Autograph right there.
35:00All right.
35:01You ready?
35:01So, I'm gonna have you stand at this corner and wait for further instruction, okay?
35:06Central Van Rong, 10-6 with one release.
35:10I'm not supposed to do anything bad, but I definitely want it after this, so.
35:14All right, Piana.
35:15Let's get you out of here.
35:19All right.
35:19So, far exit door.
35:23What are you gonna do now with you there?
35:25I'm gonna go have my friend pick me up and then tell my boss that I got arrested
35:30and say, please don't fire me.
35:33Take care.
35:34Stay safe.
35:35I appreciate it.
35:36Absolutely.
35:53In the women's unit, Officer Baker checks in on pregnant inmate Amanda Rodriguez, following
35:59a medical evaluation.
36:03I came over here to check on you, yeah?
36:05A couple of days ago, you said you were a little bit nervous because you hadn't been
36:08feeling anything.
36:09I still haven't felt the baby.
36:10Oh.
36:11Yeah.
36:12When is a doctor seeing you again?
36:14In the morning.
36:15Okay.
36:15Perfect.
36:17Pregnancy sucks, especially in here.
36:21This is why you don't come to jail.
36:24Too old for this.
36:28I just want to make sure the baby's healthy.
36:47Hey, Dad.
36:49I had an ultrasound today.
36:51I seen the baby.
36:53And it was alive and moving.
36:58Yeah, but I wasn't able to find out what it is because the baby wouldn't open its legs.
37:05Anyways, I just wanted to call and tell you I love you.
37:07And yeah, thanks for the money, Dad.
37:15Because of the way my parents, my mom and my dad prayed for me, I have faith one day I'm
37:21going to be okay.
37:22I'm going to make it.
37:25Yeah.
37:27It's not a place you want to spend your life.
37:31Why did it take me 40 years to learn this is a question that I don't know.
37:36But this time I've learned this is not it.
37:41If it's the end of your life, you get older and you think about what happened, where you've
37:44been and what you've accomplished, you get no rewards being here.
37:50But I will take being here as a lesson.
37:52And if I can benefit from that alone, I will be okay with it.
37:55As long as my kids never end up in the system.
38:03Hi, Cruz.
38:04How are you?
38:04All right.
38:06Just all right?
38:08Hang in there, lady.
38:10I can't save anybody.
38:12At the end of the day, most of the people in here are adults.
38:15Like, you have to make this decision.
38:17Like, I can have those conversations with people.
38:20But out of the 20 conversations, if two of them take it to heart because we talked about
38:27it and they're like, yeah, I'm going to change my life.
38:29And it was just that conversation that got them to that point, then I've done my job.
38:35So that's what I'm here for.
38:41For me, I just, I love this profession.
38:43It's probably one of the greatest professions ever because there's two sides of it.
38:49There's going out and catching bad people, but there's also the other side, which is the
38:53service side.
38:54And that's making a difference.
38:55And that's just as important as going out and making sure that everybody's safe.
39:00So I got to ask.
39:01Okay.
39:02Three things that affect inmates in here.
39:05To your time.
39:07Absolutely.
39:08Food.
39:08Mm-hmm.
39:09And the ability to communicate outside.
39:11Right?
39:12Correct.
39:12Anything else?
39:13Medical care.
39:15Medical care.
39:15I'm a high-risk pregnancy.
39:17Okay.
39:18And I've been waiting to see my high-risk doctor.
39:21Uh-huh.
39:21Just worried.
39:22Just going back to your cell and worrying about that.
39:25Well, I appreciate that.
39:26All right.
39:28All right.
39:37Come on, Fabias.
39:39Come on, Fabias.
39:40Ready.
39:41Ready.
39:42Woo!
39:44See, look.
39:45Everybody ready.
39:47In the men's pod, Hispanic inmates Oswaldo and Rodrigo finish preparing a meal for a diverse
39:53group of men in hopes of breaking down unwritten rules that often separate inmates by race and
40:00gang affiliation.
40:02I'm not on the racist bullshit that a lot of people are in here.
40:05And I care more about having friends and making good friends with good people in the long run
40:10versus doing this racist stuff and then just ending up back in here and it's stupid.
40:15All right, guys.
40:16We got 30 minutes.
40:18Here's a couple rules.
40:19Stay seated.
40:21Stay quiet.
40:22The TVs are going to stay under 35.
40:25Any questions?
40:27All right.
40:28Enjoy your extra care time.
40:30There you go.
40:36You got to find everybody now.
40:39You can see how they like it.
40:42What's up?
40:44You got to tell me.
40:45Where is all this form?
40:47Where are you moving?
40:48This table?
40:49All right.
40:51You want one.
40:51Okay.
40:53Who was it?
40:54We put $9 into this little bag.
40:58Yeah.
40:59So we decided to get together just because we've been here a while.
41:05Thank you. I appreciate you.
41:07Eat together, make new friendships, arms, everything like that.
41:16There we go.
41:18Amen. God bless.
41:19God bless.
41:21Amen.
41:22See how the Duke was her?
41:23You didn't.
41:24Hey.
41:26Dude.
41:28How much more?
41:29Oh, you're singing, singing.
41:30Did you cut for bears?
41:31You cut for bears?
