00:02Welcome to Inside PS Vita, an inside look at the future of portable gaming.
00:10Coming up in this episode, we take a look at augmented reality.
00:14You can actually change what you are seeing in the real world and you look through the place of the
00:18Vita.
00:18You see, you don't see your desk, you see something different.
00:28So, what exactly is augmented reality?
00:32PlayStation Vita has two cameras, one on the front and one on the rear.
00:35And the one on the rear, you can use obviously for photographs and video.
00:40But one of the cool things you can do in games is you can do augmented reality,
00:44which is applying 3D graphics to the world you are seeing through the camera.
00:50You look through the device and seamlessly you just see the world,
00:54but you see this new world layered on top.
00:57There's a kind of magic there with augmented reality.
01:00And it's something what we are really using with something like Reality Fighter.
01:05We are trying to kind of create the world between the real world versus the kind of virtual world.
01:14So as an example, if you want to play, look at the characters in close proximity,
01:19we allow you to do that by using a single AR card so you can really zoom in to the
01:25characters.
01:26But if you're out and about in somewhere interesting, like maybe going on a skyscraper,
01:31you can actually project your fighters from top of a skyscraper onto the ground level.
01:37Now, the character size will be scaled up accordingly.
01:40So if you do, the higher up the building you go, the bigger character gets.
01:45So the end result is that you could have a giant Godzilla sized character fighting on top of a skyscraper.
01:51So it's really, really exciting.
01:57For me, I think augmented reality, it's made for portable devices.
02:03You look through the device and the augmented reality is layered on the world.
02:06And there's a kind of magic with that where you're seeing this world, but this slightly distorted world.
02:13Maybe you're looking down your street and then you've got this dinosaur stomping down your street.
02:18Or maybe it's an invisible running around on your sofa or an iPad running on the living room floor.
02:25And those kind of things can be put into the world and in a really natural way where it doesn't
02:31feel stuck on.
02:32And you can create some fantastic experiences with that.
02:39With Wipeout, we've got this whole sort of unlock system.
02:42So as you progress through the game, you get to unlock different types of ships.
02:46There's sort of speed ships, weapon ships as well.
02:51So more strength, more versatile ships to steer around the tracks.
02:55And we also offer an AR mode where you actually view the ships that you've unlocked.
03:00So you can have them out on the coffee table in front of you and you'll see it there floating
03:04away.
03:04And we also use the accelerometers then to actually zoom in and you can get to see it there right
03:10in front of you.
03:11And also trigger off the different buttons as well.
03:13So it will like, you know, lift its air brakes or fire a weapon.
03:20So reality fighters now support both the traditional AR marker method as well as markerless based technology.
03:30This is industry first on this genre.
03:34So what basically means is we don't have the need to actually use AR markers at all for this game.
03:42And calculations of actually placing and projecting your characters onto the real world is all based on the AR technology
03:50and using the gyrosensors.
03:52So it's quite exciting.
04:01When you look through the PlayStation, you don't see your desk.
04:04You see what's being created through augmented reality.
04:07So it might be a garden by a swimming pool with a creature swimming around in it.
04:12It could be anything.
04:16The beauty about augmented reality is that you could have, for instance, two fighters on your coffee table or in
04:24your living room.
04:28Putting that augmented reality into the real world and viewing it through the device, that really helps the believability, which
04:35is something we always strive for.
04:39It's the power of Vita allowing us and our gamers to get closer to the game experience and see more
04:44than we could do on any previous console.
04:55Don't miss the next edition when we take a look at social connectivity only on Inside PS Vita.
05:03The social network features of PlayStation Vita are one of the things that I think is going to set the
05:08whole console apart.
05:15Thanks for watching. See you next time.
