00:01Robert Mueller, who led an investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election, has died.
00:08His former law firm confirmed his passing at age 81.
00:13The cause of death was not immediately reported.
00:16The New York Times last year reported that Mueller, a decorated Vietnam War veteran who led the FBI in the
00:23aftermath of 9-11, had Parkinson's disease.
00:26Mueller had retired in 2013 as FBI director, but was summoned back to public service by a senior Justice Department
00:34official four years later as a special counsel to take over an inquiry into Russia's election meddling after Trump fired
00:42then-FBI chief James Comey.
00:44Russia has denied election interference.
00:47Mueller conducted a 22-month investigation that produced a 448-page 2019 report, indictments against 34 people, including several Trump
00:59associates as well as Russian intelligence officers and three Russian companies, and a series of guilty pleas and convictions.
01:06First, our investigation found that the Russian government interfered in our election in sweeping and systematic fashion.
01:15Second, the investigation did not establish that members of the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government in its election
01:23interference activities.
01:26We did not address collusion, which is not a legal term.
01:30Mueller ultimately stopped short of a criminal indictment of Trump.
01:34Mueller, a longtime Republican, faced unremitting attacks by Trump and his allies on his integrity, as they tried to discredit
01:43the investigation and the special counsel himself.
01:46Trump asserted it was a witch hunt.
01:49This was the worst hoax in the history of our country.
01:52And on Saturday, Trump celebrated Mueller's passing in a social media post.
01:57Mueller and his wife, Anne, had two daughters.
02:00My wife.
02:02She said, thank you so much.
