00:09Police are trying to figure out what led to a woman's death inside her home.
00:14She's great. She's very friendly.
00:16Great mom, very involved with her kids.
00:19She was about to get married. The wedding was like a week away.
00:23It looks like a gunshot went, and that's all I know right now.
00:26For an innocent mother of three to be killed in such a tragic manner in their own home, it's terrifying.
00:33Everything about this case rotates around three people.
00:37What would be the motive?
00:38I have no idea.
00:40He was lying about where he was at.
00:43If you had any suspicions, would you tell us?
00:46I interviewed him five times, but I couldn't get him over the fence.
00:50If anybody's going to break this case, it's going to be Ranger Holland.
00:55He set you up like a little bitch.
00:57You got screwed.
01:00Investigators have done just about everything they can do.
01:03But this is your opportunity to make it right.
01:06At the end of the day, someone had to talk.
01:08I don't know.
01:37Hey James, Jamal with the Rangers, how are you doing?
01:40Yes sir.
01:42Doing alright?
01:43What's that?
01:44What's that?
01:48What's that?
01:49How's life treating you today?
01:53What's that?
01:54Paradise, eh?
01:57Nothing like paradise.
01:59I'm working a case from Rowlett, a small city outside of Dallas.
02:0429-year-old James Valeta is in jail for unrelated charges.
02:08He's also a person of interest in the murder of Laura Gorilla.
02:12I'm what they call a USIP ranger, alright?
02:15Unsolved crime investigation team.
02:17A super elite group.
02:20To be a USIP ranger, you've got to be really, really good at what you do, okay?
02:23It's like the epitome.
02:25It's the top level.
02:25And basically I report to the governor.
02:28You actually remind me of the vigilance of the Texas Rangers that I heard about.
02:31The old Wild West days.
02:33Yeah, yeah.
02:33They'll send all these marshals and sheriffs in there and it took one Texas Ranger.
02:38One Wyatt and one Ranger, right?
02:41Rowlett PD tells me they have a murder that occurred six months ago.
02:45They have several suspects, but they're not having any luck getting any of them to talk.
02:50The case remains unsolved.
02:52Why am I talking to you?
02:54Why am I sitting here today?
02:55Well, because we got a murder that's gone unsolved for six months.
02:59At the end of the day, there's just people that need to be punished.
03:01Can't get away with murder.
03:03You know where I'm going with this?
03:17You're hitting the cell phone.
03:23We're out at 9-1-1.
03:24We'll say just emergency.
03:25Yeah, we need an ambulance.
03:30I just got off and I went to the kitchen and I saw my ambulance by the way on the
03:37floor.
03:38Shut up.
03:39Okay.
03:40She's not moving?
03:46Hold on.
03:47Just a minute.
03:47Let me get you some help going, okay?
03:51When the paramedics arrived, they realized that there was a woman shot on the ground and she was not alive.
03:57So immediately, they got out of the home to wait for officers.
04:03There are police!
04:07There are police!
04:12All right, take a point.
04:14They make sure that there's no one in the house or nobody else is injured.
04:19All right, let's back out.
04:23Ten houses cleared.
04:25Three officers coming out.
04:26Clear?
04:27Yeah.
04:28The neighbors are coming out of the woodwork.
04:30I'm putting out a fire line station.
04:32The officers called for investigators and that's when we showed up to the scene.
04:42It was obvious to us that she had been shot one time in the head.
04:48I don't see any spatter going any other way though.
04:53The patrolman identifies the victim as Laura Guerrillo.
04:57Based on a Rolette Police Department ID tag that she has.
05:02Laura was a volunteer at the Rolette Police Department.
05:07It didn't make sense.
05:09Laura was 37 years old.
05:12She was a mom of three.
05:15Laura was very well liked and involved in the community.
05:18Had lots of friends.
05:19Just a great person.
05:22Great mom.
05:23Very involved with her kids.
05:25That's how she spent her days was, you know, caring for the kids.
05:32Laura was about to get married.
05:34The wedding was like a week away.
05:37Her fiance John Macris was from Greece, but he came over to the United States.
05:42They had been together for a few years and decided to finally make it official.
05:49Laura had three children.
05:51Two were from previous relationships and then their youngest daughter was with John.
05:57John was previously married before Laura.
05:59You know, lived around the country, but then finally settled and made roots here in Rolette.
06:04He had a business doing home reconstruction.
06:07He and Laura kind of worked together.
06:10She did his books and he did the work.
06:13He was also one of our volunteers here at the police department.
06:16It seemed like anybody that knew Laura really liked her.
06:22For an innocent mother of three to be killed in such a tragic manner in her own home.
06:26It's terrifying.
06:34John, come here, come here, come here, come here.
06:38John showed up at the scene about 20 minutes after the 911 call with his daughter,
06:43because nobody went to pick his daughter up from school that morning.
06:48I don't know what's going on right now.
06:51All I know is there's somebody down inside the house that looks like a gunshot wound.
06:56That is all I can tell you and that's all I know right now.
06:59Who all lives here?
07:04Okay.
07:05Okay.
07:08John initially tells responding officers that Laura's brother, Brian, John's three children,
07:14and his mom live in the house.
07:17He fails to mention that his fiancee, Laura, lives in the house.
07:23Laura's brother, Brian, called 911 around noon saying that he had just woken up.
07:30He went to the kitchen.
07:31He saw a woman laying on the ground.
07:33He assumed that it was John's mother who was in town for their wedding.
07:38He couldn't even make out who was on the floor.
07:41John, here's what I need, okay?
07:45For us to find out everything that's going on.
07:48Okay?
07:49We're going to.
07:50Alright?
07:51Listen to me.
07:51I need you to tell me that it's okay for us to go in the house and search and find
07:55out everything.
07:57I'll let you know everything when I find out.
08:00Okay?
08:01Fair enough?
08:02Okay.
08:04Once we were able to enter the scene, we did an initial walk through to look and see what we
08:10were dealing with.
08:12The shell casing right here.
08:17We found the single shell casing a few feet away from Laura's body, close to her feet.
08:23It was a .40 caliber.
08:27She is just like we saw her.
08:29Okay.
08:30See that?
08:31Can you see her forehead?
08:34Yeah.
08:37Okay.
08:37How Laura was found was disturbing just because you could tell she was shot immediately getting into her house.
08:46We haven't touched anything.
08:47Not even these shoes.
08:49Okay.
08:49Cool.
08:51Seeing that her shoes were right by the door, the fact that she was still clutching her purse and her
08:56keys in her hand, I mean, you could just tell that this was, she was completely taken off guard.
09:02We could not find any forced entry.
09:04There was no doors kicked or pushed in or broken, windows broken, nothing like that.
09:11In the master bedroom, some drawers had been opened.
09:14There was a small safe that was there with the door standing open.
09:17There was no gun, there was no, you know, bloody fingerprints or anything like that.
09:24To our other breaking news in Rowlett, where police are trying to figure out what led to a woman's death
09:29inside her home.
09:30Right now, police only calling it a death investigation and could not go into many details.
09:36It's a developing situation.
09:42We did do some canvassing in the neighborhood, talked to a couple of the neighbors.
09:49I was just, like, shocked.
09:53They lived directly across the street, one house over.
09:56And, uh, whenever my kids would go outside, they'd meet their kids, you know, and they, they grew up with
10:02each other.
10:03Laura loved her kids.
10:04She was a great mom.
10:06So when something like this happened in the neighborhood, it was, it was, it was nerve-wracking, you know?
10:15Her neighbor next door saw her come home that morning, which gave us the last time that we know for
10:21sure somebody saw her alive.
10:23And it was about 8, 10.
10:26Detectives also were able to confirm with the crossing guard that they saw John leaving the house around 7.45.
10:35One of the main people that the detectives wanted to interview was Laura's brother, Brian.
10:40They wanted to figure out how was it that someone who was there in the home could not hear a
10:46gunshot, especially a few feet away.
10:50So we brought Laura's brother down here to the police department to interview him.
10:56Turns out her brother suffered from hearing loss.
11:00Detectives were able to find records to show that, in fact, he couldn't hear at all in one of the
11:05ears.
11:05So if he slipped on his good ear, he wouldn't be able to hear anything.
11:11There was nothing but love between Laura and her brother.
11:15So we did eliminate him from being a suspect.
11:20Next person is the victim's fiancée, John.
11:33Suspicions are immediately raised because John is actually the last one to leave the house.
11:38And the murder happened shortly after.
11:43First person is the victim's fault.
11:44How are you doing, sir?
11:47One name is Christopher Naimus.
11:49I'm the wild police.
11:51This is our fellow working with the police officers and detectives at the scene.
11:55And the work they're telling me, it is going to be Laura.
12:01I'm sorry for your lunch.
12:08I want you to know that we're going to find out now today.
12:13Yes, sir. We're going to find out the first response to it.
12:33I was going to ask you a question, Jim. It's okay.
12:38It appears that somebody attacked Laura.
12:42What would be the motive for someone to come in the house, attack Laura and take care of it?
12:48How many? No one here.
12:52You don't keep anything very valuable, house cash money?
12:56The only thing we had was $500,000 cost.
13:00No, that's all of us, sir.
13:04It appeared that we were missing $9,000 from the safe.
13:08The safe door was open, but there was no money in there.
13:12John's theory was that she interrupted a robbery.
13:14Let me ask you this. She took the child to school.
13:18They left about what time happened?
13:217.30?
13:21No, no, no.
13:23We left both. We left the house around 7.30.
13:28After John left home that morning, he said that he went to a home improvement store in Dallas
13:33where he picked up some materials and ultimately made his way to his job site in Dallas.
13:42He pulled out his cell phone for the detective and started giving timestamps.
13:47He actually gave us consent to extract the data on his phone, so we did that.
13:53Investigative 101 stuff. You know, where do you start? You start at the epicenter.
13:56What's the epicenter?
13:58John.
13:59He says if he has an alibi, maybe the fact that he was gone at the time of murder was
14:06just a little bit too convenient.
14:08You have to really look at him and see if there's any possibility that he's capable of murder.
14:30New information from Rowlett where neighbors are in disbelief.
14:34The death here inside this home is now considered a homicide.
14:38With no signs of a forced entry, investigators say either someone followed Laura into her home
14:43or was already inside when she returned home from taking her children to school.
14:47Many tonight say it just doesn't add up.
14:53The question is, did Laura's fiancé, John do it?
14:57John immediately plays out his alibi and law enforcement goes back to check it.
15:07John told us which stores he was at.
15:12We actually got a hold of the video.
15:15We were sifting through massive amounts of video surveillance.
15:22We looked for John on video at the home improvement store in Dallas where he told us he was.
15:40He was precise on his timeline.
15:43And the video confirmed that.
15:46So we knew that at that point he didn't do it.
15:49So that made the question even bigger.
15:52OK, if John didn't do this, who did?
15:56Turns out John wasn't alone on video surveillance.
16:00Detectives also see John's two workers, James Valeta and Jesus Trevino.
16:06They did meet him at the store well over an hour after John arrived.
16:17Jesus Trevino had been a convicted felon for aggravated sexual assault of a child.
16:23And James Valeta was currently on probation for sexual assault of a child.
16:30They both really stood out to us.
16:33So we wanted to find out where were they in that hour before when Laura was killed.
16:49They both said that they had not come to Rowlett on the Friday of the murder.
16:55That they had met up with John.
16:58And he told me, don't be late.
17:01Don't be late to...
17:02What are we going to be up at?
17:05Which one?
17:06In Dallas.
17:10Just started moving doors.
17:13He pulled up and...
17:14John.
17:17John showed up and everything.
17:19We started working.
17:21Let me ask you this. I'm going to ask you.
17:23Laura lives in her life.
17:25If you had any suspicions or if you had any personal knowledge, would you tell us?
17:30Yeah.
17:31Because if y'all find out I'm you, I'm ******.
17:38James is living in a shady motel in Dallas.
17:42So they both claimed that they met up in Dallas and stayed together at James' motel room
17:48before they went to meet up with John to pick up their job supplies for that day.
17:54In these types of situations to verify people's stories and whereabouts, we get their cell phone records.
18:01At that point, we had to wait for the cell phone data.
18:04We did not have enough reason to keep them in custody.
18:08So after we talked to them, we released them.
18:13The next day, we did get their cell phone records and...
18:18Detectives were able to get tower locations from Jesus Trevino's phone.
18:24They showed that Trevino's phone traveled from Dallas and went all the way to Rowlett.
18:29And then quickly came back to Dallas.
18:33At about 7.30, he pinged the tower in Mesquite, which is halfway to Rowlett.
18:37And about 8.30, he pinged the tower on the north side of Rowlett.
18:42And that short timeframe of Laura's murder matched precisely when Trevino was in Rowlett.
18:51Trevino was lying about where he and James were at.
18:53We knew that we were on to the right people.
18:56Now we just gotta, we gotta prove it.
18:58In researching social media on Jesus Trevino, we were able to obtain a photo of a woman holding a handgun.
19:10We were able to identify that gun as a Springfield XD-40.
19:15It was a 40 caliber handgun.
19:16The same caliber of round that was used to kill Laura.
19:21I mean, it's not completely uncommon, but not something that, that we see a lot.
19:27The woman in this photo dated Jesus Trevino at the time that Laura was killed.
19:33She was able to provide information that helped to finally break the case wide open for us.
19:41When we went to talk to her, she explained that Jesus told her, several months prior to Laura's death,
19:49that he had been paid or was going to be paid by his boss to kill his box's wife.
19:57She thought enough about that information to make a local police report.
20:02We knew who had committed the murder, but we didn't have enough probable cause to take him to custody.
20:11Laura's fiance, John, has an alibi that checks out.
20:15We know that he didn't pull the trigger.
20:18But we have a story about him asking Jesus Trevino to kill his wife.
20:22If what we're hearing from Jesus' ex-girlfriend is correct, then it looks like he is going to be behind
20:28pulling the trigger.
20:29Which leaves James as the driver.
20:31And, obviously, it makes no sense that anyone other than John ordered this hit.
20:40We interviewed John multiple times.
20:42He's not going to open his mouth and say anything because he's the farthest one from what actually happened.
20:49Between John's two employees, the type of personality and their backgrounds, the way they portrayed themselves in the interview, we
20:58thought that James was going to be the weaker of the two.
21:01So we decided to put more pressure on James.
21:09We went to James' motel in Dallas.
21:12Since we're here, I was going to see if it's okay if we search the room.
21:16All right.
21:17Cool?
21:19He signed a consent form.
21:22And we searched.
21:25I saw a backpack under the bed.
21:28And so I reached down there under the bed and I pulled that black backpack out.
21:33When I pulled that backpack out, he turned his head and he stared at it.
21:38He had, like, a startled look on his face.
21:41And he stared at the backpack.
21:43And he said, that's not mine.
21:45That's Jesus'.
21:46And I unzipped it.
21:50And inside was latex gloves and two burner phones.
21:54We're investigating a murder.
21:56Why do you have this backpack with this type of things in it stashed under your bed?
22:08During our search of James' motel room, the detectives did find a small amount of marijuana.
22:13And we did ultimately make the decision to charge James with possession.
22:18So we've got James in custody.
22:20But we couldn't get him to understand the position that he was in and try to save himself.
22:26He still continued to stick to his story, which is, I don't know anything about what happened to Laura.
22:34I interviewed him five times.
22:36But I couldn't get him over the fence.
22:40At this point, Jesus Trevino is a person of interest.
22:44But he had just up and disappeared.
22:47No one knew where Trevino was.
22:51So detectives do put his information out on the news.
22:54Laura Grillo was found shot to death inside her home.
22:58Tuesday, Rowlett police announced a person of interest.
23:0230-year-old Jesus Trevino.
23:05If someone could provide us with information, that will help us in locating him.
23:10John also went ahead and gave an interview here in the parking lot of our police station.
23:15Why somebody will do something like that with her?
23:18I mean, I'm not talking about Jesus.
23:19I'm talking about, in general, why?
23:23And I mean, now a name comes up, it's somebody that I know.
23:28It's like, the why now is even bigger.
23:32Why is John actually saying this to the news media?
23:35Is he really surprised?
23:37Or is he protecting himself?
23:49Four months after the murder of Laura Grillo, our prime suspect, Jesus Trevino, is on the run.
23:55But then law enforcement gets a tip from his ex-girlfriend.
23:59She was contacting him through social media and was able to give his location.
24:04And the U.S. Marshals were able to apprehend Trevino.
24:08And he is brought back to Texas.
24:17Our other suspect, James Veleda, is in custody as well on a drug charge.
24:23And had been interviewed by these detectives multiple times.
24:28And they aren't getting anywhere with him.
24:36So, Ranger Jim Holland is brought in to be the closer for this case.
24:42Ranger Holland has a natural connection with people.
24:46So, if anybody is going to break this case wide open, it's going to be him.
24:52Everything about this case rotates around three people.
24:56And the whole thing, it was about who's going to break.
25:01Ranger Holland said, James is going to give it up.
25:05And that's exactly what we thought from the beginning, too,
25:07is James is the weak link in this whole situation.
25:10And who we were hoping would be the one to confess first.
25:23Hey, James.
25:24Jim Holland with the Rangers. How you doing?
25:26Yes, sir.
25:27I know he's been interviewed four or five times.
25:30And James strikes me as this person who's not a brain surgeon.
25:35And so, I basically had to re-present these things in a more straightforward manner.
25:42And make sure that he understood what I was talking about.
25:53Well, I'm going to be honest with you.
25:55I'm not real good at blowing smoke.
25:57I just kind of throw stuff out there.
25:59And probably the most important decisions that you're ever going to make in your life,
26:03you're going to make today.
26:05I know it's hard, but it's got to be the truth.
26:08Because, you know, Jesus already talked.
26:11As I worked into the interview with him, I embellished that Jesus Trevino
26:16was obviously talking and was obviously looking for a deal
26:20and was obviously throwing information out there that would implicate James in the crime.
26:27What do you think of Jesus?
26:29Do you think he's a good person? Do you think he's a bad person?
26:31I thought he was pretty good.
26:32I mean, I did notice, looking at it over and over again,
26:36that he was a friend, but he was kind of distant.
26:40As I'm talking to Valeta, I guess I'm trying to weigh how tight they are as friends.
26:46Does he like this guy?
26:49Is he going to lie for this guy?
26:51And how far will he go?
26:53Well, this is the difference between a good person and a bad person.
26:55Good people say that they're sorry for the mistakes that they made.
27:00They make amends and they pray and they go down the road.
27:05A bad person, he makes a mistake, he just keeps walking.
27:09He just keeps walking down the road because he's a bad person.
27:15Your boy, Jesus, you think he's a brain surgeon or you think he's a dumbass?
27:21He's a dumbass.
27:22He is!
27:23He is!
27:24He is!
27:24I'm going to show you some pictures.
27:27You know this young lady?
27:35No.
27:36No clue.
27:40Guess who she dated?
27:43Guess who she dated?
27:44Guess what Jesus told her over a year before the murder?
27:49Jesus tells her a year before the murder that he's fixing to come into a bunch of money
27:53because he's fixing to kill his boss's wife.
27:58Get this shit.
27:59She's so freaked out by it, guess what she does?
28:04Calls Dallas Police Department and reports it over a year before the murder.
28:08Gives Asus' name.
28:10Says, I don't know the boss's name, but I know that he says he's getting paid to kill her.
28:14Do you think Asus is a brain surgeon?
28:18Somebody's not the dumbest son of a bitch you ever heard of in your entire life.
28:22My thought process was to lay the entire thing out there, this insurmountable hurdle,
28:28something that he couldn't avoid.
28:30The question is, will he finally break?
28:34You know where I'm going with this?
28:48When Laura Gorilla was murdered, I mean, you had an innocent mother of three being gunned down in her own
28:55home.
28:56The Rowlett police detectives on this case really took the time and used every resource possible
29:02to get as much justice for Laura and her family as possible.
29:07They've repeated interview after interview, they've gone through phones, they've gone through towers.
29:12They have a really, really solid circumstantial case.
29:18But this thing wasn't going to come together unless one of these people broke down
29:22and provided information against the other two.
29:35Does the gun look familiar to you?
29:40You ever seen your boy with a gun?
29:42No.
29:43Never?
29:44Never in his backpack?
29:47The latest interview lasted several hours.
29:50I felt like the longer I kept him in there, the better opportunity I had to actually get him to
29:57communicate with me.
30:01What do you know about that?
30:12It was apparent that he wasn't going to provide information against Trevino. The question was why? Is he protecting him?
30:20Are they friends? Is he afraid of them?
30:23There's a reason that he reached out to you three weeks ago when he got you a job? Because he
30:28couldn't get anyone else to drive him. He set you up like a little bitch.
30:32You got screwed.
30:33You got screwed. But this is your opportunity to make it right.
30:40Did you know why you were driving him there?
30:44Beleda would basically laugh when presented with a very uncomfortable question. He would laugh right before he responded or lied.
30:56You think? I don't think. It's your decision. This is probably the most important moment of your life.
31:09Let me help you through this.
31:14Hypothetically, when does he first approach you?
31:19You're my friend, right?
31:21I'm trying to be your friend.
31:23It's a self-serving world, my friend.
31:25You know that and I know that.
31:27But today I can be the best friend in the world.
31:29And you need a good friend.
31:35I really felt like he was going to provide information.
31:40I think the real question was, how truthful was it going to be and how long was it going to
31:45take?
31:47Whatever the case, I'm not going anywhere until I get to the truth.
31:53I'm here to be your friend right now.
31:55All right? You want me as your friend.
32:02All right, when, um...
32:06Jesus first mentioned anything about this, I disregarded it.
32:11Mm-hmm.
32:11I thought he was just non-stop.
32:13Mm-hmm.
32:14Perfect enough.
32:19He shows up in the morning.
32:21We get in the car and we go.
32:30I don't know.
32:30At all the time, I'm like, I'm still thinking he's bullshit.
32:36I mean, even when he gets there.
32:40Mm-hmm.
32:41He's down, he does his thing.
32:44I heard nothing.
32:53And when he gets back in the car, what does he say to you?
32:58Let's go.
32:59Okay.
32:59Did he give you any details? Did he talk about it at all?
33:02Say it's done or she cried or begged for her life?
33:05Or was he joking about it?
33:07Was he bragging or was he freaked out?
33:10He didn't say nothing. Just let's go.
33:12Okay.
33:14Later on, that's when he starts talking.
33:16Mm-hmm.
33:18Last year, she actually tried to run.
33:27And that's when he said, yeah, he shot her.
33:29Is that how he did it or?
33:32He just shot her.
33:34Right in the head.
33:34Mm-hmm.
33:37I think he just felt like if he could present himself
33:40as being on a different side than Trevino,
33:44then he was in a better place.
33:47But this isn't over.
33:49He's given up the Trigger Man,
33:51but I need him to give up the mastermind, John.
34:17What happens with John?
34:19Was John asking for details?
34:21Did he want all the gory details of how Jesus did it
34:24or did she say anything?
34:25Or, I mean, what was he saying?
34:26What was he asking?
34:27Just everybody keep quiet.
34:29Shut up.
34:30But it's pretty obvious that John ordered it.
34:33Yeah.
34:35It took hours to get him to start moving in the right direction.
34:41And he confesses because, at the end of the day,
34:44it's his only play.
34:46It's really the only thing he can do.
34:49Did you ever say how much John paid him for that?
34:53He was, um,
34:56boasting about something about 15 grand.
34:59What did he pay you?
35:02No.
35:03You gotta be honest.
35:04No.
35:05He says he won't give me a grant.
35:07Mm-hmm.
35:10After he comes out of the house,
35:12tell me for sure what he does with the gun.
35:15He takes it apart.
35:16It's in the back bag.
35:17He pulls it to the gas station.
35:18He's, like, here.
35:20The dumpster.
35:22And I threw it in the dumpster.
35:24I don't know the street, but I could take you that way.
35:31After James confessed to Ranger Holland,
35:34he took detectives on that ride-along.
35:38He said that after the murder,
35:40as they were driving back to Dallas,
35:43Jesus was throwing out pieces of his clothing out of the window.
35:48Sure enough, seven months after the murder,
35:51there were still pieces of a black hoodie,
35:53as well as shoes,
35:55found exactly where he said that it would be.
35:58We couldn't find a gun.
36:00But James' confession and confirmation of how the murder took place,
36:05who ordered it, who got paid,
36:07this is major.
36:10I felt like if we could put information that Valetta turned,
36:14that John would have little choice but to kind of roll in that direction.
36:22Unfortunately, unbeknownst to me,
36:25Rowlett and the Rangers get kind of excited,
36:28and they jump the gun.
36:30And they immediately go out and arrest John.
36:34My original plan was to talk to him before cuffs were put on.
36:38But now that he's been arrested,
36:40the possibility of him talking is nil to none.
36:50How are you doing today?
36:52Jumahol, Texas Rangers.
36:54I've got a bunch of things to kind of explain to you.
36:56I'm guessing you probably have about 50,000 questions right now in your mind,
36:59wondering what's going on.
37:01John's a pretty intelligent person.
37:03Does he have a lot of psychopathic tendencies?
37:06Yeah, I think so.
37:09We believe he planned this meticulously,
37:11from leaving the empty safe open at the crime scene
37:15so it looked like a robbery
37:17to coordinating with his two employees
37:19to get them there at the exact right time.
37:22Let me cut to the chase a little bit.
37:24Jesus is a dumbass, all right?
37:28Sometimes he is.
37:29No, he really is a dumbass, okay?
37:32At the end of the day, you shouldn't hire a dumbass to do a job
37:35because he's going to screw it up, all right?
37:37And if he doesn't screw it up, he's going to talk about it.
37:39And that's what happens with him.
37:41He screwed you over.
37:43You go to hire this dumbass
37:45and he tells people that you want him to kill your wife.
37:49I didn't hire the dumbass. That's my problem.
37:52Do what?
37:53I did not hire the dumbass.
37:55I did not pay him any money. That's my problem.
37:58I already know that you hired him.
38:00I know that he drove.
38:01I know that he's an idiot.
38:02I know that he pulled the trigger, okay?
38:05I already know those things.
38:06It's not a question, all right?
38:08I'm not asking you questions.
38:09Did you do that?
38:10I already know the answer to that.
38:19I need to talk to his own name.
38:24At the end of the day, yes, I was disappointed when I left the room without a confession.
38:34But the most damning thing to him was the fact that the jury never saw him being remorseful about what
38:41happened to his fiancee, Laura.
38:45After James and John, I talked to Jesus.
38:50He just wants to meet with his attorney first.
38:53Jesus doesn't confess.
38:56But what James Valetta provided was 100% corroborated.
39:05We had sent out search warrants for John's e-mail records.
39:10So, at this point, we finally got the content of those accounts.
39:15In those records, an e-mail came out from Laura to John saying that their relationship wasn't getting better, they
39:24weren't progressing as she wanted them to, and that she was looking at leaving Texas and taking John's child.
39:33John had been through this situation before he had had an ex-wife move out of state, take the kids,
39:38facing this again, he didn't want to leave Laura, he just wanted her out of the way, and so he
39:46planned it.
39:50I think if Jim Holland hadn't joined the investigation, we would not have had a strong of a case on
39:57John, because having an actual party to say, John said this, these were the words that came out of John's
40:06mouth, all those details made this such an airtight case.
40:33This is the epitome of a senseless crime.
40:36You have, you know, by all accounts, this wonderful, loving woman, adored by neighbors in the community.
40:45There's three kids that, they're going to grow up without a mom.
40:49There's a mother that lost her daughter.
40:52There's a brother that lost the sister that loved him and took care of him.
40:59Does putting three people in jail deliver justice?
41:05You know, I guess it's as close as we can get.
41:18One of the worst experiences I've ever been through.
41:21I was supposed to go pick her up, and she never showed up.
41:24It's obvious he had a problem with women.
41:26I've heard some real weird shit, but this is one of the oddest that I've ever heard.
41:32November 5th.
41:33Do you remember that day?
41:34Do you remember that day?
