00:00Hi, so I was looking for a blu-ray player that was on the cheap end, but also high quality
00:06and had a
00:07Basically a very good brand name
00:09So I settled on this Philips and also on this Sony so this particular Philips one is the model BDP
00:171502 and this Sony is BDP s
00:201700 and this particular
00:22Philips was $50 the Sony was $58 and what I was looking for was something that was very basic
00:29It'll play the blu-rays. It'll play the DVDs and I will demo this side-by-side
00:35On the television my 4k TV
00:38So what I was more concerned about was you know when I played DVDs that
00:44It actually looked very crisp and clear and I could say both of these had
00:48Equivalent picture quality and you will see that in my demo and both of these had equivalent sound quality
00:56So just to show you the power button here, so I'm just gonna push the power button and when I
01:01push the power button my TV actually turns on
01:06So that's just the functionality my TV once it detects a signal it'll turn on
01:11Now the eject
01:13Just to show you the smoothness of this
01:18So that's the sony and right here is the phillips
01:25So you turn it on you can see there's a red LED right there. This is a play and pause
01:31button, which the Sony does not have
01:33so for the Sony
01:35It'll either or it'll automatically play the DVD once you put it in but
01:41You know, it doesn't have the play and pause button
01:46And you could see that is the smoothness of the phillips
01:51Right there and you could see that the Sony if you have a TV along with it. It does have
01:58you know the
02:00Buttons also for the TV
02:03Whereas the phillips is more beer bones and more basic for just the blu-ray player
02:11I
02:12Was gonna go through you know the blu-ray, but the blu-rays are more or less the same quality
02:19They're very high quality. You can't distinguish between them especially if you have a 4k television
02:25That really automatically upscales for any of the modern TVs, you know, basically from
02:332018 or even 2017 is when I got this Samsung TV onward
02:38Um, you don't really have to worry about the upscaling so I didn't even bother with buying upscaling
02:46Blu-ray players or DVD players for that reason
02:50Now let me just go ahead and show you that side by side
02:54So I'm going to demo the video quality of the phillips first and you can see I have a compressed
02:59DVD burn here, which is the spider-man and I'm going to skip scenes so that this video doesn't get
03:07caught for a
03:09Copyright, so I'm just going to put this in
03:15And once again that both of these are
03:17So similar that you can't really tell the difference between the two as far as the video quality or the
03:25As far as the video quality or even the
03:29Sound quality audio quality you could see
03:33Right there
03:52Keep in mind, this is the phillips
04:00You
04:42so i'm skipping scenes here so once again i don't get caught in the copyright
04:55all right
04:57oh
05:32So right there, that's the Philips, and now I'm going to put that same DVD right into
05:39the Sony and do the exact same thing.
05:54So this is the Sony's turn, and I'm going to put in the compressed DVD, and I am actually
06:04very happy with the image quality of both of these.
06:11They're basically indistinguishable.
06:19So this is the Sony opening scene.
06:42So this is the Sony opening scene.
07:12I'm just scrolling through the same scenes as before
07:32I'm just scrolling through the same scenes as before
07:39I'm just scrolling through the same scenes as before
08:10Alright, I'm just wondering how long it's going to be
08:14I'm just going to be able to close the scene
08:20I want to see the iÅŸi at the end of the day
08:20I'm not going to be able to close the scene
08:43And that is a sampling of both the Sony and the Philips.
08:52So this here is the menu screen for the Sony, and just going by the remote here, you can see
09:02that you can actually download apps, but keep in mind there is no Wi-Fi, this is a wired,
09:09and you can also navigate the USB.
09:12Now if I go all the way up to setup, I want to show you the setup screens, you can
09:22see
09:22there is a software update.
09:24Once again that is reliant on the wired network connection.
09:30Then this is the accessibilities, and you can see it could have larger text, auto scroll
09:42speed, and this is for people with disabilities, either for hearing or for sight.
09:53Now if I do the return, screen settings, so the screen settings here, you can see the
10:04aspect ratio, 16.9 or 4.3.
10:13screen format, so it could be full, normal.
10:21So I am going to do full here, aspect ratio, letterbox, pan, or pan and scan.
10:32Cinema conversion mode, auto, video, and the output resolution.
10:41So the output resolution, original, interlaced, not interlaced, 780p, 1080p interlaced, not interlaced,
10:53so just having that at auto.
11:01And you can see here, 24p output, for the Blu-ray, for the DVD, and for whatever content,
11:17and also the streaming content, and you can see this is the RGB colors.
11:27Have that at auto, HDMI, auto, 16-bit, 12-bit, 10-bit, and once again at auto.
11:41Pause mode, pause mode, and those are actually the basic settings of the Sony BDP-S1700.
12:05So here's the digital output, Blu-ray mix, Dolby digital, audio, I believe this is the kind
12:23of encryption, down mix stereo, and here's the viewing properties, the menu options, audio language,
12:38subtitles, BDP, Blu-ray connection, delete the data, and parental settings.
13:01So it could have a passcode, I am just going to cancel this, no restrictions, no restrictions,
13:09and allow system settings.
13:16So this is the on-screen display language, show you what language it supports, which is
13:21English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.
13:25Closed caption, HDMI settings, control for HDMI, linked to TV.
13:35Quick start mode, auto display, software notifications on or off.
13:46So we have system information that is like the network information, and the license, and
13:53here's the network settings, which is once again not a Wi-Fi, it's a wired connection, and
14:01easy network settings.
14:04So this is setting up the network, and once again this is a wired connection.
14:10And finally, the last is resetting all of the menu options.
14:17So that is the on-screen display of the Sony.
14:22So this here is the on-screen menu display of the Philips BDP-1502.
14:29And you can see the first option is the disk, that is the USB, and right here I have setup.
14:36And this setup is actually very tricky.
14:40And I'll go into it, you can see it's highlighted.
14:43And right there is a slight white, and if I navigate down, you can see that I am controlling
14:54the options now.
14:55Now, it's very tricky to actually set, I must say, because I actually don't know, judging
15:05by these colors, what menu is actually active.
15:10So the choices are actually terrible.
15:16So right now, I don't know if I'm controlling the TV display, though that's my guess here,
15:23because it is slightly white.
15:27And I pushed this particular one, but once I move it up, you can see, alright, that is
15:36the TV display, so I'm just going to have that set to auto.
15:47And I'm going to click cancel.
15:54So, once I have it set to auto, I'm going to go back.
15:59And you can see this is the HDMI video.
16:05Or actually, this is the noise reduction.
16:09So, this is what I mean, this is very hard to navigate.
16:20And you can see this is the HDMI video, or noise reduction.
16:25This is the TV display.
16:28This is the HDMI video.
16:33So, I suppose I can choose particular right there, the widescreen.
16:49Now I'm going to go back.
16:50You can see now I have the display is widescreen.
16:54The HDMI video is auto, and the noise reduction is medium.
17:00Now for the audio, and for the preferences, so just for the language preference here.
17:16You see there's English, there's French, and then there's Spanish.
17:23And there's actually Bulgarian, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish.
17:31So there's a bunch of languages here for the menu options.
17:44So, once again, it is just crazy to navigate.
17:51It's just so very difficult to figure out what menu option you're on.
17:59So, I have to kind of restart here, but I just want to show you just how hard it is.
18:07Now I'm using the remote control.
18:12And I'm just going to go back.
18:19And I've selected English, now just going back to preferences.
18:30So, I can't even tell.
18:36I really can't even tell what menu option I'm on.
18:40You know, I guess that's all of the languages that you see.
18:43So, that's the audio for the English, that's the subtitles is off.
18:49You know, though on the remote here, you know, you could toggle the subtitles with this button,
18:56this particular button here.
19:01But let me just skip to advanced.
19:03But the navigation of this menu option, these menu options, are just horrible.
19:11And so, you know, Philips could have done a better job here.
19:15You can see the software updates is through the disk, you know, USB.
19:22And once again, it's tough for me to even navigate through that.
19:35And here's the accessibilities.
19:40I wish I could do a better demo of this, but I really do want to show you just how
19:45tough
19:45it is to navigate this.
19:47It is very tricky.
19:48So, just keep that in mind.
20:05And really, that's it for the on-screen menu display of the Philips.
