00:04Hello Access, this is Nathan. Recently we went to Montreal to see Thief and you should check out our gameplay
00:09videos here and here.
00:11But while we were there what we noticed was the game has tons of customization options which do with everything
00:16from the difficulty level to the kind of stuff that you'll see on screen.
00:19So we'll let Daniel from Eidos Montreal explain it all for you.
00:23So here we have the main menu of Thief and we want to just go through and show you some
00:27of the customizable difficulties and show you some of the options we have already from the beginning, from the get
00:32go here.
00:33Let's go into a new game, let's create a new game.
00:36And the first top three you'll see, the Rogue, Thief and Master are the natural, easy, medium and hard difficulties
00:41that we would find in most games.
00:43But we have the one called Custom, let's look at that one because I think that one's going to be
00:46interesting.
00:48So, first thing you do is just select what is the overall difficulty you like. In this case, let's choose
00:53Master just for the fun.
00:55I wouldn't do that.
00:55Just because of the challenge.
00:57So, and then as we scroll down here you'll see that we have a lot of options to really make
01:04the game like the way you want it to.
01:06For example, we just enable the fact that we won't be able to have focus which is like the fallback
01:11for the player.
01:11So, you won't have that, you won't have the resource whatsoever. We can remove the reticle, we can remove the
01:19stealth, make it own stealth takedowns which reduces some of the aggressive things you can do.
01:25So, if you want more of the classic thief experience, this is where this comes in and you can kind
01:30of like make sure that you get that little more challenging experience.
01:36Sure, harder.
01:38So, if you really want to start challenging yourself in terms of the gameplay, we have things like the zero
01:43damage which means if you take any damage whatsoever, the mission is failed.
01:48Nice.
01:48We have make it more expensive with the resources which means you really have to pick your battles when you
01:53use them.
01:54We have no food or puppies which means throughout the entire game you cannot regenerate anything.
02:00Now, I think it's important because I'm looking at these and thinking why would anyone choose any of these?
02:05But the reason is because obviously the thief community is well established, it's been going for a long time and
02:09it's a game that people really like to challenge themselves extraordinarily hard on.
02:13So, this is obviously something you guys have thought about a lot and worked hard to put into the game.
02:16Exactly. We really want people to share their accomplishments. Who can pull this off?
02:21On a personal level, I haven't been able to pull all these, you can activate all of them, I haven't
02:25been able to get through that. It's really difficult.
02:28And here at the bottom we have the ultimate thief mods and these are really, really bad ones because the
02:35Iron Man means if you die or fail, you lose your entire game.
02:40So, you can save to go to sleep, have some sleep, go up, eat some good breakfast, come back and
02:44play, but if you die you have to start over from the beginning.
02:48And I'm so looking forward to seeing people pull this off because this is my favorite mode.
02:52And for each one you get, each one kind of puts more points onto the score that you accrue as
02:57you play through the game, is that right?
02:58Exactly, in the bottom right you can see there's like this multiplier, it just bumps up your overall score so
03:04that kind of comes back so you can make sure people can see that you play with these switches on.
03:09No kills or knockouts means if you kill or take out anybody, game over. No alerts, anybody sees you or
03:15you cause a big ruckus, game over.
03:18And then combine that with Iron Man and you're in deep trouble, right?
03:21Yeah, of course.
03:21So, this is really pushing the limits to the competitive nature of players and I think this is going to
03:26make a lot of players really happy and probably some really frustrated.
03:30We're trying to get through with it.
03:32So, then you've got the leaderboard, so I guess people who want to go for the highest score, put it
03:36on master difficulty, put all of these to on and then they'll be able to share their kind of hopefully
03:41successes, not just horrible failures with the share button on PS4, right?
03:45Exactly, we want to make sure that people can actually prove that they did this.
03:48You know, it's quite an achievement, I must say. So, let's quickly go back, we'll scroll down to options, but
03:54as you see we also have a challenge mode.
03:56Okay.
03:57Which is another one with the high scores, so if you really want to prove that you're an ultimate thief
04:02in the very controlled chunks, this is also a place where you can really challenge yourself.
04:06Are they kind of existing maps that you play through in certain different ways to get?
04:09There are variations of some of the locations, and they've been specifically made to follow certain rules that the challenge
04:17maps are.
04:18Gotcha.
04:19So, we won't go too much into that. Let's go into options. So, we want to really make sure that
04:23players can adapt the game to fit their needs or their expectations.
04:27So, display isn't actually one subject that comes up a lot. For example, do you want, when the AI is
04:32agitated, to have an icon?
04:33Yes.
04:34We want to make sure that you have the option of having an icon, because maybe you can't, maybe you
04:39can't hear, you still want to be able to play the game.
04:42You can still play without it, but we want to make sure you have as much feedback as possible.
04:46Sure.
04:46But, for a lot of players, it's very important to have that full immersion. There, you can just sit back,
04:51there's nothing, you know, on the screen, it's just whatever's in the world.
04:55Yeah.
04:56And you can just go in here and disable all those things.
04:58Nice.
04:59So, we can just scroll through this here. We have the minimap. You don't want that help. Do you want
05:03reticle feedback? Do you want the updates when you pick up a journal?
05:06Do you want the light gem to be in the bottom left corner? It comes from the original thief to
05:10tell you whether your life is a shadow.
05:12Yes, I do.
05:12The loot glint is one of those things that when you pan over an area, you see a little bling.
05:16Yeah.
05:17It just gives you a hint if there's something that you can pick up that's something that has a value
05:21to you.
05:22Yeah.
05:22And you can also, like, even customize things like your resource, like your health and focus to fade out over
05:28time or just completely off.
05:30Right, okay.
05:31There's just a ton of stuff.
05:33So, these are all kind of visual aids. So, again, this could, and not just immersive, but it will affect
05:37how hard the game is as well.
05:39Exactly. It's harder to aim with the bow if you don't have a reticle, for example.
05:42Right, of course.
05:43Right, so there's a lot of things that, you know, that's information that we want to give to players.
05:49Yeah, sure.
05:49But if you want to, you know, if you're more the player, you just want to, you know, go a
05:52little more on cruise, put it on easy, you put on all the aids, and you just kind of go
05:57with it.
05:57Okay.
05:57That's also a way of experience if you're more in for the mood, the story, you know, just the experience.
06:02But if you are, you know, someone who wants a little bit more challenge, that's why we want to make
06:08sure that you have those options.
06:09Amazing.
06:10In audio, for example, for some players, they don't want hints or anything, or they don't want Garrett talking.
06:15So, Garrett is kind of a guy who lives in solitude.
06:18He appreciates himself, and in some way he talks to himself, kind of give himself hints to kind of, not
06:26schizophrenic, but, you know, it's kind of his personality to make sure there's a dialogue going on and helping the
06:32player kind of his own best friend.
06:34But some players don't want that, so we enable the ability to be able to disable that completely.
06:38So, if you see here the Garrett voice, we deactivate that.
06:42We will only have like the mandatory ones where you would talk loud out to other NPCs or so on.
06:47Gotcha.
06:47So, there's a lot of things you can do to kind of make this experience as close to what you
06:52would expect as possible, and that was always a very important part for us.
06:56So, we can also go into game options, and naturally this is more adapted to the current hardware.
07:02Sure.
07:02So, here we have some specifics for some general ones, and then we have some specific to the PS4, the
07:10motion controls.
07:11Okay.
07:11For example, we also have the touchpad inventory.
07:15So, if you want like the circle wheel dialing, you can go back to that, but specifically for the PS4,
07:23you have the pad, the touchpad, and you can like quickly just tap on the area.
07:27You learn that pretty quickly when you're playing, to quickly go to this correct arrow instead of having to choose.
07:32It just kind of becomes this shortcut thing.
07:34So, there's a lot of things that are very specific to hardware.
07:38So, for people who don't know, how does the voice detection work on PS4?
07:42So, you need the headset, but then if you say a sound, you would actually create a sound in-world,
07:48causing a distraction to attract the guards.
07:50Okay, just like dropping a bottle or making a noise.
07:52Exactly.
07:53And you can turn that off.
