00:30If we didn't get her right, the game wouldn't be right.
00:33And she is the emotional center of the game.
00:39This character, Elizabeth, she comes from a pretty dark place.
00:44But she's also got an incredible amount of enthusiasm for life.
00:47And when we found Courtney, I think we found somebody who could do both.
00:50I don't dance. Come on, let's go.
00:52Why? What could be better than this?
00:55It's so complex.
00:56I mean, you're talking about really trying to bring forth
01:00all the complexities of human nature that impact us
01:04because you're having to use only your voice to convey
01:07your entire, you know, the character and what you're trying to portray.
01:11You have to put your entire body to it.
01:13So there are times when I'm doing voiceover work
01:15and I'm literally drenched in sweat because my body is working so hard.
01:20Hey! Knock it off!
01:22Stop it!
01:23Will you stop it?
01:25I'm not here to hurt you.
01:26Who are you?
01:27My name is DeWitt.
01:29I'm a friend.
01:30I come to get you out of here.
01:31Get away!
01:37Are you real?
01:38It's not one-note emotions.
01:41And I think that's what was so important to us as a collaborative team
01:44to be really putting forth a narrative that was strong and that was complex
01:49and that was, you know, reflective of how deep
01:53and the myriad of emotions that human beings experience.
02:00She really had a sense of telling a story and having a conversation with no words.
02:06If you're watching a silent film, you understand what's going on and you don't need words.
02:11We saw her and Sean was like, by the way, this is the girl.
02:13I'm like, oh yeah, that's the girl.
02:14Absolutely.
02:15I had to really rely on my imagination and rely on what I was being told by, you know, the
02:21director.
02:21It's weird for me to see myself, like literally like every movement that I did.
02:27I mean, I can, I see myself in it.
02:30I mean, it might not be my face, but the thing is, is she's actually in a world.
02:34When I did it, I was in like an empty room.
02:36They put me out into this giant sort of basketball court, it looked like,
02:40with stuff taped out on the floor that was sort of like the imaginary, you know, world.
02:46She had to do a lot of physical things that I probably wouldn't do in my everyday life, you know,
02:52kicking some butt and, you know, with a bat and like beating a lot of something.
02:58It's just started to feel like it was my voice, you know,
03:00I just really started to connect with it physically and this voice was all one.
03:04I don't understand how good we get there.
03:09The incredible voice acting and the incredible motion capture acting
03:16was the most useful and inspiring element that we could have had for Elizabeth.
03:22Liz will follow you around the world and if you decide that you don't want to go
03:27where she thought you were heading, she can handle that really, really cleverly.
03:32She will stop if you stop, she will keep running if you decide
03:36that you're not interested in what you're doing here.
03:39She will be by your side no matter what you end up doing.
03:42The moment you come up against a character who's just sort of standing there
03:45or behaves robotically or behaves in a way that is so alien
03:49to what you expect out of a human being, you just shut them off
03:53and you just say, oh, they're just a video game character,
03:55I don't need to worry about feeling anything about them.
03:58And so we tried a lot of things.
03:59We tried to make Liz have emotions so that she can react to things in the world
04:05and things that you do.
04:06For example, we might say that Liz will feel comfortable leaning against this wall
04:10but she'll do so with her arms crossed
04:12and she'll do so with her back slightly turned towards you
04:16and that difference of just a few degrees
04:19is enough to make the player feel that they're really in the doghouse.
04:25You're going to see her all over the place.
04:27You're going to see her on giant billboards in, you know, New York and LA
04:30and you're going to see her on TV ads.
04:33I said, okay, well, if we're going to find a person to play Elizabeth,
04:36I think we already have that person.
05:23And all of a sudden we found this great character who existed in the space
05:27between the real world and the world of Bioshock Infinite.
05:29There was a moment where we had people coming up to us and saying,
05:33Liz is awesome.
05:34She did, I have a story to tell you about.
05:36And it was, everybody had their own unique stories
05:38because she was just doing systemic things.
05:41They could do the same thing twice.
05:42That's the same.
05:42That's the same.
05:43That's the same.
05:44That's the same.
05:45I actually get people telling me things
05:47that there's no way I could know about.
05:48Like, say there's one of the combats kicking off
05:50and they're having this incredible moment
05:52where they're running around the place
05:53and smashing someone in the face
05:54and blowing someone else up with a shotgun
05:57and suddenly a huge big boss man comes up
06:00and then you go, click.
06:01Oh no.
06:03And then suddenly from the side, Liz goes,
06:05Booker, over here.
06:07You press the button.
06:08She throws it.
06:08You grab it and just go, boom.
06:10And they come up to me and go, and it was amazing.
06:12It was like, yeah, me and Liz were going to kick ass.
06:15We're going to break.
06:16Nothing we can't do.
06:17That's right.
06:18Even if we just break that barrier sometimes
06:21where people feel she's a friend
06:25or somebody going through this experience with them,
06:28then that would be very exciting for me.
06:30I really hope people fall in love with her.
06:33I fell in love with her.
06:35I forget she's not a real person sometimes.
06:38And I know Courtney really well.
06:39And I forget sometimes that that's Courtney's voice
06:43and that's Heather's motion
06:45and that's the team's other work.
06:47And she becomes a real person to me many times.
06:49And I think the reason we call her Liz internally
06:50is because she became a real person to us in a lot of ways.
06:54Elizabeth has been locked in her tower
06:55for however many years it was.
06:58And now instead she's going to be released
07:00from her secondary tower, which is our studio,
07:03and let loose in the world for real.
07:05And that's just an incredible feeling.
07:09Let's go! Come on, let's go!
07:11Come on, let's go right now!
