00:00Hey hey hey, it's time for another edition of the Cheekly Recap.
00:04I'm your host Chom and I'm here to go a bit deeper into the topics that I've covered in my
00:09shorts. The footage behind is from the game Diablo 4. Let's get this show on the road.
00:16Our first topic is all about Starfield. So Starfield might not be done yet,
00:21at least if you ask its composer Inon Xur. In a recent interview he said he genuinely
00:26believes the game will one day be seen as legendary, arguing that the lukewarm reception
00:31at launch wasn't because the game failed, but because players simply weren't ready for what
00:36it was trying to do. He points to Todd Howard as a visionary whose ideas often take time to
00:42fully click with audiences, suggesting that Starfield could follow the same path as Bethesda's
00:48older titles that grew in reputation over time. Unfortunately for Mr. Xur, the reality right now
00:54is a bit less flattering. If you remember the game launched to mixed reactions and still hasn't
01:00reached the cultural or critical impact of something like Skyrim. So what he's really trying
01:05to say that Starfield isn't misunderstood garbage, and to be honest I would never classify that game
01:11as garbage. He is saying that it's potentially a slow burn. The question is whether players will
01:16actually come back around to it or if this is just wishful thinking from someone close to the project.
01:22And I would say that the latter is true, because he seems to be biased as fuck. I don't know
01:30how
01:30slow burn the game needs to be in order to people figure out whether or not it's okay or not
01:37okay,
01:37or in another words whether it makes you feel fun or you're just bored to death. But it's very obvious
01:45that Starfield has a lot of issues, and even if you look at the game objectively speaking,
01:51there are certain things that absolutely make no sense whatsoever. My favorite one is you doing New
01:57Game Plus, where the whole game is absolutely the same. The only thing that you do is you transfer your
02:04armor, weapons and your skill points and all that good stuff. But then you remember that in this game,
02:11you have now become a Starborn, and you have deep knowledge about the game, the plot, the characters,
02:18the world, you know, you're basically playing with cheats. And why not use that knowledge to push the
02:23story forward? I've said many times that this is such a missed opportunity that they didn't introduce
02:30these things in the game. And all we had left was, well, one dialogue option, and that's about it. And
02:36that dialogue option works only when you're trying to save your buddies from the lodge. The rest is just
02:43like, you know, an interesting remark, and people kind of get a bit confused by what you're saying,
02:48like you're on drugs or something like that, and then you move forward. And I'm not gonna even go
02:52with issues like loading screens, empty planets, mediocre plot, or stuff like that. This story has
03:00a continuation, and that's basically Bethesda saying that you should kind of tone down a bit,
03:07don't overhype things, because after Inon Zur said that people weren't ready, Bethesda responded
03:13in a more cautious, slightly tongue-in-cheek way, trying to cool things down. They pretty much said
03:18that he isn't wrong, but they let the narrative exist just without doubling down aggressively.
03:24So even there you can kind of see that they're not very comfortable, because deep down they know
03:29what they made. There's no two ways about it, they just don't wanna overhype things even more.
03:34Not to mention, with the recent update that I think already released, they specifically said that
03:40if you don't like Starfield's formula from the get-go, this new update is not going to be
03:45Starfield 2.0, we are just going to refine certain things. And to be honest, that's the best thing that
03:51they can do, because changing the whole game, especially how the planets work in terms of them
03:56being barren and filled with different points of interest, that's basically making a different game,
04:01so the best thing that you can do is try to support the game, fix things that are inherently bad,
04:07or they are not really logical, and then allow players to kinda come back in and see
04:13from a different point of view with all these fixes implemented. I could try to see what they did,
04:19but as far as I'm concerned, I have already been exposed to the Starfield experience,
04:23and there is a very unlikely chance for me to go back and see what they did. Not because I
04:30don't
04:30have the saves, I do have the saves, but I just don't see any point. But also, I would like
04:35to try
04:35the game from scratch, because I already have a save, like I said, where I'm so overpowered,
04:40I think I'm level 250 or something like that, so trying it from the fresh perspective would be the
04:46way to go. But then I ask myself, do I have the time to do this? There are other projects
04:51that I
04:51want to do. So yeah, maybe in the future where I have absolutely nothing to do, I would go and
04:57sink
04:5760 hours in Starfield and then see what happens. However, it's very unlikely, but you know what
05:03they say, never say never. Speaking about never say never, there has been a significant development
05:08when it comes to Subnautica 2 situation. Now, I made several shorts, because stuff was coming out
05:15like there's no tomorrow, so I'm gonna try to make some kind of a summary what was happening
05:20in that particular situation. So the first big news was that a Delaware judge ruled that Crafton
05:26wrongfully fired Ted Gill, CEO of Unknown Worlds Entertainment, and now Gill has been reinstated
05:32and will regain authority over the game's early access launch, while the legal battle between the
05:36studio founders and Crafton continues. When that news landed, everybody was like, oh my god,
05:42we are back boys, we're not gonna pirate the game again, we're gonna buy it, and all that good stuff.
05:47At least, that's what I saw when I was checking through my Instagram feed and what my viewers were
05:52pointing out. Then another news landed that Crafton was using ChatGPT for legal strategy,
05:58and it backfired big time, because the ruling claims the company followed many of the AI's
06:04recommendations while attempting to avoid a 250 million payout. And that was complete madness,
06:10because if you want to escape this particular deal or agreement that you had with Unknown Worlds by
06:17using ChatGPT as your legal advisor, at this point I don't even feel pity for you. I would in this
06:24instance actively go against you so you lose, because using a chatbot in order to get out of this
06:32particular, well, you could say conundrum, is complete and total madness. And the next story
06:39was all about Subnautica 2 hitting early access in May, after Crafton backed down based on the
06:46lawsuit that I already explained to you guys. The publisher basically signaled a shift in tone,
06:51stating that it will work with reinstated CEO Ted Gill as development continues at Unknown
06:57Worlds Entertainment. And finally, after all this happened, when the court reinstated the original
07:04CEO, Crafton allegedly announced a release date without his approval, and now things are escalating
07:11again. Because apparently, as far as Crafton is concerned, they did this before, but the CEO that
07:18was reinstated says that from that particular date, when he was reinstated, he is the one that's making
07:24all the decisions, and now Crafton basically undermined him, or rather undermined the potential
07:30250 million dollar payoff. So at this point, it's safe to say that this whole situation is just a huge
07:38shitshow. There's no two ways about that. I did make a video about this whole situation where I kinda
07:44went through all the details, what was happening, so I get up the speed, and then this basically blew up.
07:50But before all of these things blew up, I made a prediction, or rather, I chose that I should
07:57support the original developers, because it made sense to me that all what they were saying is true
08:04in comparison to what Crafton was claiming. So I reckon I made a good call, which kinda makes me happy.
08:09And now you can actually see that everything they were claiming is absolutely 100% accurate in comparison
08:16what Crafton was trying to do. How will this situation end pretty much depends on the player
08:23base at this particular point. Why? Well, if the player base decides to support the developers,
08:30that is the original developers, not the publisher, then they will have a lot of pre-orders, they will
08:35have a lot of early access copies sold, and that potentially will give the developers that 250 million
08:43dollar payoff. But then we have another problem, which is, if you support the developers, you are
08:50indirectly supporting the publisher. So what do you do in this particular situation? Well, as far as I'm
08:56concerned, I would still go and support the developers, because no matter how you look at it, even if the
09:02publisher gets some money from all that particular situation, they will still have to pay 250 million
09:09dollars, which when you look at the things as a whole, it's a win. So I reckon the best course
09:16of
09:16action is to go and buy the game. Will the people do that? Or will they be conflicted what to
09:22do and
09:22how to approach the situation? Well, only time will tell. If the intentions of developers are clear in this
09:29particular sense, which is that they will going to give this money to all of their employees, so share the
09:35booty, so to speak, then everything is going to be amazing. And these people who are working their ass
09:41off are probably going to be a bit more happier than they are. But yeah, this whole situation with
09:47Subnautica 2 is completely mental. I don't think this should have been the case at all if the publisher
09:53wasn't greedy fuck as they are. But that's the reality of situation and you really cannot escape from
09:59it. Like I said, hopefully stuff is going to be okay at the end. And let's hope that this
10:05shit never happens again. Not only for Subnautica 2 developers, but the general situation in the
10:11industry, so to speak. And for my final news, or rather story, we are going to talk about Crimson
10:18Desert. Because of course we are going to talk about Crimson Desert. Everybody's talking about it,
10:23so might as well do the same. Well, this all started with an article that Pearl Abyss saw its
10:29stock drop nearly 30% after reviews for Crimson Desert failed to meet high expectations. The score
10:35was solid around 78, which for every normal person is a decent score, but the game's reception wasn't
10:42strong enough to match the hype, highlighting how risky blockbusters expectations can be. Basically,
10:48corporate expected 85 and above and it didn't happen, so now everybody is sad and the stock tanked.
10:55To me, that's completely mental because you should be judged based on the copies sold and the total
11:00revenue gained, not by, you know, some kind of a arbitrary number or whatever Metacritic is doing,
11:07an aggregate of a sort. I was like, okay, you know, maybe people didn't like what they saw,
11:13maybe there are some other things in the game, maybe this is something that's normal and stuff
11:18is going to be better when you look at user score. But then when the user score started piling up,
11:24you could see that situation is kind of the same what the critic score was. And that, to me,
11:30is a good indicator that these two parties are kind of aligned with each other. Again,
11:37good representation that the score is valid. So what the hell happened with Crimson Desert being
11:43so much hype that at one point I thought it's going to be the second coming of Christ.
11:48Well, turns out the game has serious problems. One of the problems that I mentioned was all about
11:55controls. Overcomplicated inputs, input lag and frustrating design choices are turning players
12:02away fast. Coincidentally, I tried the game afterwards because I was doing some other stuff,
12:07namely playing Diablo 4. I was trying to finish up the season as much as I could. And also I
12:12had a
12:13conundrum whether or not to try Crimson Desert or go play Death Stranding 2. Well, after playing the
12:19game for two hours, which was yesterday, I believe, I actually noticed these things as well. And it's
12:25not just the controls that I'm having issues. There are other elements of the game that are very
12:31questionable to me. But that's something I'm going to talk about in my review. So if you manage to get
12:36this
12:37far, I guess you will have to wait for my first impressions to figure out what other issues I had
12:43with the game. Anyway, safe to say that people who are fanboying about the game immediately attacked
12:48the other party who had issues with the controls. However, Crimson Desert devs are already apologizing
12:55after the backlash over controls and they said or rather they confirmed a patch is coming. But again,
13:02is this going to be enough to fix stuff in the game? I don't think so because we are only
13:07talking
13:07about controls here. What about combat? What about story? What about this? What about that? Inventory,
13:12all those things. You don't really fix the controls and then hope that everything else is going to be
13:18okay. So what to do with this particular game? Should you wait till they patch the shit out of it
13:24or
13:24you get exposed even more and then try soldiering through hoping that you will get used to controls
13:30and then after seven, eight hours of playing, at least according to some reviewers, the game opens
13:36up and everything is, you know, rainbows and sunshine? I don't know because first impressions matter and
13:42if you feel that you're not vibing with the game immediately, then I don't think there is a good
13:48chance you will be coming back unless something major happens in a sense that they put a patch or they
13:54fix things or whatever else you can conjure in your mind. I have decided that I will go more
14:00in the game as in play it more and see what happens and figure out whether or not there are
14:05more issues
14:06or maybe I will get over the issues and essentially vibe with the game. But knowing myself, I think I'll
14:14probably get annoyed more or something along the lines. Anyway, I'm keeping my mind open as much as I
14:20can because it would be a shame not to dig deeper in that game but at the same time it
14:25would also be
14:26a good idea to let go because I don't want to scar myself more and start to hate the game
14:33when there
14:34is a good chance that things might be better in the future, provided that I don't really like what I'm
14:39seeing in those initial couple hours. One thing is for certain, I definitely did not expect that this
14:45game is going to be so divisive and I really hope that I would have something that I can lose
14:51myself
14:52in for 100-200 hours, doesn't matter, but apparently the reality of situation is what it is and I
14:59definitely look forward seeing how the development around this game is going to transpire. And that's
15:05basically it when it comes to the news that I covered this week. Thank you very much for watching
15:10and as always, I encourage you to leave comments. I read all of them and I'm very happy to interact
15:16there with you guys. If you enjoy this content, consider liking it and subscribing for more discussions
