00:12Civ Beyond Earth feels much different from Civ 5 right away.
00:16When you land on planet, you're immediately met with these hostile aliens.
00:19And of course you have barbarians in Civ 5, but this is going to feel a lot different.
00:23We're huge fans of both science and science fiction.
00:26So we wanted to make sure the game starts in a believable place.
00:30But it starts moving out very quickly and taking these little steps into the more fantastic.
00:35So for that, we looked far and wide, especially the canon of classic sci-fi literature.
00:39There's really no shortage of great sci-fi material out there that we drew from.
00:44One of the things that we had a great time doing was figuring out who the cast of characters is
00:49going to be.
00:50And the way we did that is we started with the geopolitical landscape of Earth as it is right now.
00:56And introduced this thing that we called the Great Mistake.
00:59The result of that was this reshuffling and mass migration of people.
01:06So the nation sort of reassembled themselves and clawed their way out of this dark age.
01:12And it's at the point where they're finally back on their feet again that the game begins,
01:16where they're sending spaceships to new worlds.
01:24Their leaders represent this multicultural mixing that happens.
01:28So a lot of them speak a mixture of languages.
01:30For example, the American Reclamation Corporation.
01:33How may the corporation serve you?
01:35The sponsor that you can pick for that, Suzanne Fielding, speaks a combination of Spanish and English sort of interchangeably.
01:41Imposible.
01:42A lot like how everybody swears in Chinese in Firefly.
01:46You know, it tells a lot about what happened without saying much.
01:52So the tech web is probably the most fundamental change to this game.
01:56Tech is really the engine of civilization.
01:58And in its historic state, it follows a pattern that most people already recognize.
02:02But in this game, you're moving forward into an uncertain future,
02:05which has technologies that we obviously haven't invented yet.
02:07So we wanted to make a structure that would let the player play exploratively
02:11and kind of discover along the way
02:13what technologies were going to be useful or advantageous or just interesting to them.
02:17And the tech web is so big that you will not get all the technologies in the course of any
02:20one game,
02:21which is another departure from Historic Civ.
02:23But then you start again and end up with a completely different blend
02:26that makes your game more exploratory and also more replayable.
02:30The orbital layer is a really exciting addition to civilization.
02:36The ground is always the star of the show.
02:39And the orbital layer is there to reinforce that drama that's going on underneath.
02:43So when you land on the planet almost right away,
02:45you can go back into the orbit around it
02:47and put up tactical or economic or research satellites
02:50that are going to augment or change up the situation on the ground.
02:53So, you know, defend yourself from invasion
02:56or make your cities into economic powerhouses
02:58or spy on your neighbors and steal things from them.
03:01and that's just one of several sort of fundamentally new ways to play the game.
03:06People over there, are you ready for the awesomeness?
03:10After we announced the game,
03:11it was really special to sit in that room at PAX East
03:14with, you know, 700 of our biggest fans.
03:16It was especially gratifying because we're Civ fans too.
03:19We grew up on those games. We love those games.
03:21And this game was really inspired by that.
03:23It's really our thank you to the fans
03:25who've been asking us to make this game for a long time
03:27that we've wanted to make for a long time.
03:36We'll see you next time.
