00:09Trading by nature tends to be slowish
00:12and we want to make the game fun
00:14and so we thought about a solution for that
00:17and our solution is to split trading
00:21into two different types of gameplay
00:24there is one which we call item trading
00:28which will be very familiar to you
00:31if you played the games in the past
00:32you dock at a station and you buy things
00:35you dock at another station you sell things
00:38this is really how you expect trading to work
00:41just now when you compare it with the older games
00:44you do this on platforms
00:45so instead of dealing with menus
00:47you now talk to people and buy stuff from them
00:51we have all kinds of traders on platforms
00:54and they sell stuff
00:56you have items that you collect in space
00:59rare items that you find in containers
01:02stuff that you steal from stations
01:04stuff that you steal from ships
01:06all of that is possible
01:07that's in general what we call item trading
01:10and as the name indicates
01:12this is really inventory trading
01:14so instead of transporting this with other ships
01:18items are usually with you
01:20they are on your ship
01:21but the real trading is about large capacities
01:24using large ships using trade transporter ships
01:28that is now a completely separated gameplay element
01:32this real trading that happens now with trade offers
01:36you can see the trade offers here
01:38they are usually at the outside of stations
01:40because they need space
01:42we are talking about large quantity of goods here
01:45this real trading that's usually about
01:47the actual supply of factories and space cities with goods
01:52so we require large ships for it
01:55and we require a lot of smaller ships to do the loading and unloading
01:59so as you can hear in that
02:01this really takes time if we want to represent it in the game realistically
02:05you can see the large capital ship docking
02:08you can see the drone starting to load and unload your goods to the ship
02:13all of this is visualized realistically
02:15but you as a player
02:17you don't suffer from this speed
02:19because you just order other ships to do it
02:22that's really the trick
02:24when you fly around the station
02:25you see interesting trade offers
02:27you are just collecting them
02:29you can see me doing this here
02:31and I am collecting them into my trade computer
02:34here on this menu
02:36you can now see where they are listed
02:38this is basically two menus
02:40we group them by selling offers and buying offers
02:44so on the one menu you see what stations you have visited are currently selling goods
02:49and on the other menu you can see which products are currently being bought by stations
02:54so by comparing this you can find interesting matches
02:58and you can see for every product
03:00where did you see it the cheapest so far
03:03then you order other ships to execute your trade orders
03:07so here you can see the quantities
03:09here you see the price
03:10that a station pays
03:11or that you have to pay to a station
03:13and you can see at the top of this menu
03:16all of your ships
03:17so usually if you want to now give a trade order
03:21you would select a ship that matches the products that you want
03:25so for example
03:27some one freighter
03:28like in this example
03:29can only transport energy
03:31because it's a specialized energy transporter
03:33while another one is a more generic transporter
03:36with capacities for all types of products
03:39you select which of the ships in your squad
03:42should execute this order
03:44then you select the matching products
03:46you can now only select that fit with this ship
03:49then you confirm the order at the bottom of the menu
03:52you see the actual transaction order
03:54you can now change the quantity
03:56and by confirming it
03:57you will now get a reply from the captain of the ship
04:00that he is now on his way to execute this order
04:04the trick here is
04:05this is just a queue
04:06you can now add multiple of those orders to a single ship
04:10and it will execute these orders one by one
04:13so while you fly around collecting orders
04:16selecting the best ones for making money
04:20your ships execute this with some delay afterwards
04:24so it could actually like 10 to 20 minutes delay
04:28between you giving the order and the ship actually executing it
04:32but that doesn't matter for you
04:33if you like you can watch the ship doing
04:36what you commanded it to do
04:38but if you are more interested in
04:40playing the game in other areas
04:42you may just do something else in between
04:44and you can already look for a place
04:47where you want to sell these products
04:48and give the sell order for the same products
04:51now a trader always wants to make
04:53the maximum amount of money
04:54and for that he wants to buy products
04:56as cheap as possible and sell them as expensive as possible
05:00in the past of the X Games
05:02that always meant you are looking for the factory
05:05that has a very high amount of its products
05:08and then you can be sure that it's going to sell it very cheap
05:11and you are looking for another factory
05:14that buys these products as resources
05:16and currently is as empty as possible
05:18the empty resources means
05:20they are willing to pay a higher price
05:22while this is still true
05:24there are now also lots of other explanations
05:27why a factory may be willing to pay more
05:30or is willing to sell for cheaper
05:33there's lots of little stories behind that
05:35for example
05:36there may be a technical problem
05:38with cooling aggregate of a factory
05:40and because you know of that
05:42you can predict that the prices are going down
05:45or are going up
05:46and this information is crucial
05:49and the way we are representing this to players
05:52is by discounts
05:53discounts are unlocked everywhere in the game
05:56just by flying over a station
05:58and getting information about the station
06:00you may unlock a discount
06:02this happens all the time
06:03it can happen if you talk to a person
06:06and if you are successful
06:07and the guy likes you
06:08he may give you a discount
06:09that the story behind that could be
06:11that he has a cousin in the sales
06:13and he's just giving you some special price
06:16the X games are played by very different folks
06:19we know that the people who buy our games
06:22are well as different as people can be
06:26there are some people who play our games
06:28entirely for the action part
06:30they want to blow stuff up
06:31and we give them that
06:33and there are the opposite people
06:36who are really really interested in the economy of our game
06:40and play our game
06:41because it provides them this realistic economy
06:44and what we tried to achieve
06:46is not just to make both of those extremes
06:49and everybody in between happy
06:50but to actually use the economy
06:54and that realistic universe
06:56also to make the game more interesting
06:58in all the other aspects
07:00it's incredible how much more fun a fight can get
07:04if you know that it's all about that real economy underneath
07:08because all of the ships that are flying around there
07:11the NPC ships are also all part of that economy
07:14and it's not just you who is trading a couple of goods
07:17and making a little bit of money
07:18but by shooting down ships
07:20you are influencing the economy
07:22you are driving prices
07:23so even the person who is just interested in playing missions
07:27and fighting will still be a part of that economy
07:30and will still feel a much deeper gameplay
07:33than in a game that takes its motivation entirely
07:36from scripted missions in the scripted universe
07:39ok now I want to quickly show you how mining works
07:42because mining is at the bottom of the economy
07:44as you know we have natural resources in our universe
07:47many of those come from asteroid fields
07:50but not all of them
07:51we also have nebulas
07:52which can be harvested for things like plasma
07:54but for all of that harvesting
07:56you need collector ships
07:58the way you command those ships
08:00is you simply put them in your own command group
08:04once I did that this ship will follow me around
08:07if I am now in an asteroid field
08:09like this one here
08:11I can turn on a mode
08:13and tag asteroids
08:15if I tag an asteroid
08:16you can see how the collector ship
08:18launches drones
08:20pick them up
08:21and drag them over to the capital ship
08:23so without any complicated user interface
08:25I can very quickly and easily
08:28tell the ship exactly what I want it to do
08:30of course you don't have to do that
08:32if you just want the ship to automatically mine an entire field
08:35you can also do that with an order
08:37you just open a communication
08:38like this
08:39you tell it what you want it to do
08:41you tell it mine this asteroid field
08:43and then you can go away
08:44and maybe this ship will mine for half an hour
08:47and then afterwards call you and tell you
08:49that it is now completely full
08:50and you can tell it where to sell the resources
08:53it just mined
08:54but of course we reward you for this manual mining
08:57because by selecting the best rocks to pick up
09:01you can greatly increase the outcome
09:04and it can fit a lot more actual resources in its storage
09:08because it doesn't have so much useless rock
09:11to get the rocks that you can pick up
09:13with your collector ship
09:15you sometimes have to cut asteroids into smaller pieces
09:18large asteroids need to be cut with mining lasers or missiles
09:23and you can use your own mining laser
09:25like I'm doing here
09:26and cut it directly with your own ship
09:29or you can just tell one of your capital ships to do that
09:32and again you don't have to open a menu for that
09:34you just take the asteroid
09:35and the capital ship will try to fly as close as possible
09:39and use its mining laser
09:40to cut this asteroid into smaller pieces
09:43and that is again much more efficient
09:46than let it do it automatically
09:47because you can select those rocks
09:50which look most lucrative
10:00Welcome aboard
