00:11Our Dracula is very different to the Dracula's that we've seen before in other forms of literature or in movies
00:16and things like that.
00:17He's not a kind of quintessential evil guy.
00:20It's a tale about someone that doing good ends up being evil.
00:25It's not black and white, it's very much shades of grey.
00:28We showed the journey of Gabriel in the first game from light to darkness.
00:33And in this game we go from dark to very, very dark.
00:36And it's a much more crueler tale, a much darker tale.
00:38And I think that following a character that you can identify with is really important.
00:43So we wanted to have a guy that people really felt for him, they understood how he got to that
00:48place.
00:49And so I think in many ways our Dracula is more human than previous incarnations of Dracula.
00:54Dracula's motivations are to end his immortal life.
00:59That's the main thing that's driving him in the game.
01:02He's been alive for a long time, he's tired of living, he wants to end this and to move on.
01:08Don't misunderstand me, he's an evil guy.
01:11He embraced evil for real and you're going to see that in the game.
01:15I think Dracula is quite a scheming character and a very intelligent, predatory animal if you like.
01:20And he's looking to settle some scores.
01:22We specifically designed Dracula as a character that people can identify with.
01:26Our early designs of Dracula were much more kind of a very powerful character.
01:29But we wanted to give a top throwback to how he looked in the original game.
01:33So when making a game you need to be careful about designing characters, especially main characters, especially Dracula.
01:40You have to think that it's the first time in Castlevania history that you play with Dracula.
01:44So with Dracula having new weapons and new abilities we wanted to give him a much kind of more athletic
01:50way of moving.
01:53His animations have changed quite a lot.
01:55We wanted to make him look cool, his hair is longer, he's more refined if you like, more sophisticated.
02:00In Castlevania Dracula's been always a bad guy that appears for a few moments and goes woo and that's it.
02:08We wanted to build a real character with emotions, with contradictions from day one.
02:16So yeah, pretty much Gabriel was our Dracula from day one.
02:20Did they tell you that blood would fight against blood for all eternity?
02:25We'd already done a lot of the work already with the motion capture actor.
02:29So there was kind of like a guide, if you like, to go to.
02:32And I think what Robert's brought to the role is he's made Dracula really dangerous.
02:36And you can sense the evil, you can sense the kind of predatory nature of the character that wasn't there
02:42before.
02:42And I think it really comes across.
02:43And that's something he was very certain that he wanted to do on the voiceover section.
02:48Because we kind of wanted him to imitate what the other actor had done.
02:51And he was like, no, no, no, no, Gabriel wouldn't do that.
02:54He wouldn't be like that. He would be much more like this.
02:55And as soon as we heard his performance, you know, we realised that actually he was right, that this was
03:01the way to do it.
03:01I think my favourite Dracula in cinema is probably Gary Oldman's portrayal of Dracula in the Francis Ford Coppola film.
03:16It changes quite a lot between, you know, a real person with emotions.
03:21You know, he loves, you know, we're known a writer's character and the love between them is quite, you know,
03:25very powerful.
03:26But also, you know, he's kind of this nasty, he's this monster.
03:29And we see that really clearly.
03:30And I really think his portrayal was probably the best Dracula I've ever seen.
03:33I also loved the previous one, especially Nosferatu, the old, very, very old movie.
03:41We told that was a bit naive for today's standards, but this is terrific, you know.
03:47But my favourite vampire movie is Near Dark, which I think is one of the best vampire movies I've ever
03:52seen.
03:52They really show vampires in a kind of grissy, horrible, very uneasy, uneasy way, which I don't think I've not
03:58seen since either.
03:59And, you know, I think there's an element of that in this as well.
04:01And Lord of Shadow 2, you know, we do things with our Dracula that I don't think have been done.
04:17So I hope that's given you a deeper insight into our Dracula from Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2.
