00:30We have one unified program
00:32where you can create content
00:34that will run on everything from
00:35an iPhone to a next-gen console
00:38and now it's really
00:40coming online and enabling the game
00:41designers to do way more than
00:43they've ever been able to do before.
00:47We spend significant effort on
00:50creating more dynamic and living
00:52environments. Before they would have
00:53to go to a lot of work to make
00:56a tree feel like it swayed in the wind.
00:57Now we give them the tools to create
00:59the tree and we let the game engine
01:02control how the wind
01:03affects that tree. Frostbite allows
01:06everything to work together
01:07the waves on the beach, the wind
01:09blowing the white caps, even the clouds
01:11overhead all move consistently
01:13with the forces of nature. You might
01:15see an explosion go off, you'll see the trees nearby
01:18shake from the explosion.
01:19It's sort of subtle, but it creates this
01:22sense of seamless reality
01:23so the large world coupled with
01:26with a lot of people running around
01:27interacting with you really pays off
01:30in Battlefield 4.
01:34Destruction has always been a
01:36core feature of Frostbite Dungeon.
01:38It's the evolution of the way
01:40the environment is impacted by gameplay.
01:42Everything from the smallest spark
01:44colliding, but also gigantic chunks
01:46of debris that crumble when they impact
01:48the ground.
01:49The guys on Battlefield 4 have been working on
01:52something called Levolution.
01:55Levolution is really about the concept
01:57how you can drastically change
01:58a multiplayer map into something different.
02:00It could be anything from a big building
02:02collapsing or to a dam breaking
02:04or anything really big game changer
02:07to the level.
02:11A recent feature that we've put in
02:14and you'll see in Battlefield 4 is our
02:15networked water simulation.
02:17So what this means is all players will see
02:19the same wave in the same position at the
02:21same time. This leads to some pretty
02:23exciting cat and mouse type of gameplay
02:25where you're ducking down and going up
02:27and you can kind of peek around as you drive
02:29into your boat. It will no longer
02:31swim on a flat surface, instead it will be
02:33affected by the different waves and everything.
02:35and that comes to everything from living characters
02:37that are swimming, but also to the ragdolls.
02:38Something like a jet crashes into the ocean
02:41you'll see the water react
02:42and the debris will then float
02:44on the waves. It's a very, very cool
02:47dynamic engine. Things just happen
02:49and it seems right.
02:51Take cover!
02:54In Frostbite 3 we've made a priority
02:56of much more believable, emotionally
02:58believable characters. There's a whole
03:00slew of features in Frostbite that
03:02support that and one of the most
03:05important is the way
03:06a person's eyes look.
03:08The way we render characters is better than
03:10ever before. We're doing subsurface
03:12scattered models, we have parallax animation
03:14in the iris. You'll notice
03:16it looks like a real eye.
03:18You'll back me up, right?
03:19Frostbite 3 is so much more powerful
03:22than any engine I ever used before.
03:23And it's not just the specific features
03:26in the framework, it's the fact that we're
03:28collaborating with other teams
03:30around the world.
03:31In the past, before we had the Frostbite team
03:34we were building a new engine every time
03:36and we were kind of stumbling constantly.
03:38Now, to have the team here
03:40to focus on new releases,
03:42with new goodies, means that we as a team
03:44can focus on the creative side
03:46to deliver better games, better experiences.
03:48Today it's used by a lot of different genres.
03:50so everything from racing games,
03:52to real-time strategy games, and RPGs.
03:56So in Battlefield 4, when the building collapses
03:59the dust starts expanding, the debris
04:01is falling, the sparks are flying,
04:03the boats are ramping off of waves.
04:06All of this is because of Frostbite 3.
