00:12Con Crusader Kings II Charlemagne
00:13we're expanding Crusader Kings with another 100 years
00:16and adding lots of interesting features for the
00:20early game. Charlemagne is roughly the size
00:24of Old Gods in terms of the amount of features that we've added
00:28and the amount of changes that we've made to culture and religion and stuff like that.
00:33One of the exciting new features that we're adding is the tribal holding system
00:37which is a replacement for the castle, city and temple holdings that we had previously.
00:42They're upgraded primarily using prestige rather than money
00:45and they have some different mechanics in terms of how they interact with their vassals and things like that.
00:52Previously you could only create new kingdoms
00:54by creating existing de jure kingdoms
00:59but we've changed that system now
01:01so you can create a new kingdom or empire from any previous lower tier title.
01:08So any kingdom can create its own empire
01:11which will be named after the kingdom
01:13or any duchy can be used to create a new kingdom.
01:17The idea is that you're not supposed to be as locked to the de jure system.
01:23So with this expansion we've also put a lot of focus on the character Charlemagne
01:26and if you start playing as Charlemagne you will be king of one half of the frankish empire
01:31and the other half will be ruled by your brother Carloman
01:34and there will be a rivalry between you
01:35and we've built kind of a story around that
01:37where we have special events relating to Charlemagne's family and different characters there.
01:42There will be a possibility for you to kind of follow a historical path
01:46by choosing certain options and events that will appear
01:49or you can choose to disregard this and do other things.
01:52This is kind of a new thing for us in CK2.
01:55We've had quite deep story events with characters
01:58but usually not for our player characters.
01:59So we think this is going to be fun to play
02:02and will change quite a lot the way you play initially if you play as this character.
02:07One thing that happens when you're playing Crusader Kings
02:09is obviously that you see the story of your characters
02:12and your descendants and your whole dynasty unfold and one thing we've always thought
02:18would be fun to add to the game is some kind of record of this
02:20and this is what we're adding in Charlemagne.
02:22You're now going to have a dynasty chronicle where all the deeds and events of significance
02:28that happen to your main character will be recorded and then as you die your heirs
02:34will continue writing the chronicle and this is going to be viewable in the interface at any time.
02:39You can open your family chronicle and look back and see
02:42who was that that wronged your family at least 200 years ago.
02:45Maybe it's time to get back at them.
02:48For some time something that we've wanted to do is to remove the assassination button.
02:54Now we feel that we've put enough focus on the assassination plots.
02:58The assassination button is no longer needed, it's been removed and it's something that
03:04we've wanted to do for a very long time.
03:07Another thing that we've done with assassinations is that a player who is the target of an assassination
03:11plot will now be able to defend himself. We'll be able to go into hiding which makes it much
03:17much harder to assassinate you. Of course it has its drawbacks because you know you live in hiding,
03:22you can't rule your realm, you will need a regent, you will get some penalties to diplomatic relations
03:26and relations with your vassals. The eighth century is a quite different world from even the ninth
03:33century actually and what we've had to do with the Charlemagne expansion is do a lot of research
03:39and think a lot about how to represent this world to the players. For example in 769 there's still no
03:44such thing as the Holy Roman Empire because that obviously was founded by Charlemagne so there will
03:49be a decision for the players to actually found the Holy Roman Empire and it might not look the same
03:55way
03:55it historically obviously. We will have several new cultures and there will be some changes to
04:01religion as well. We will have one new pagan religion and one new Muslim sect as well.
04:07Players will be able to see how the cultural and religious landscape of Europe changes
04:11during the eighth century and beyond. We will have the early East Slavs, we will have Saxons,
04:17we will have Picts, early Franks who are not the same as the French, we'll have Lombards,
04:20we'll have the Swaby, Visigoths. So we've added all these elements to paint a picture of the eighth
04:25century and try to make them blend together into something that's going to be really fun and
04:30interesting to play. As with all of our expansions we're also releasing a free patch that will contain
04:36the tribal system so in 867 and even in later start dates you'll be able to have tribal holdings and
04:43and you'll be able to play as them as long as you have the prerequisite DLCs. And the assassination
04:49changes that we're doing are also in the patch so everyone's going to be able to enjoy the new
04:55assassinations. Crusader Kings 2 Charlemagne will be available on the 14th of October so you can start
05:00planning your new custom empires and your assassinations now.
