More than 5,500 people have been evacuated as the Hawaiian island of Oahu suffered its worst flooding in over 20 years, authorities said on Saturday (March 21).

00:10Local officials warned that heavy rain and thunderstorms will continue to sweep across Hawaii on Saturday,
00:16posing significant risks to Oahu and Maui County.
00:20Hawaii Governor Josh Green said in a video on X that so far there have been no fatalities,
00:26though a few serious injuries have been reported.
00:29Again, it's passing through Oahu now and over to Molokai and Maui and then on to Big Island.
00:35So, everyone, please be safe. You've done a wonderful job. No loss of life so far.

00:43There's still more storm force out there, though it does appear to finally be clearing somewhat on Oahu.
00:50Speaking to the media on Friday,
00:52Green estimated that the storm could cause over 1 billion U.S. dollars in damage to private and public property.
01:00Officials confirmed that more than 230 people have been rescued during the storm,
01:04but warned that the 120-year-old Wahiawa Dam on Oahu could fail.
01:10Residents downstream were ordered to evacuate immediately due to the risk of imminent dam failure.
01:15Green added that over 200 National Guard members have been mobilized to assist with rescues,
01:22road closures, door-to-door checks, and other public safety measures.
