00:22is split between battle and war
00:24A battle is a small scale fight
00:26where only your party of six are affected
00:29A war occurs when your caravan
00:31meets a large number of enemies
00:32When this happens you will be presented
00:35with a summary of the pending situation
00:37along with several options
00:38of how to proceed
00:40Your choices here will affect how many of your side
00:43survive the fight and your choices
00:45at this stage will also affect
00:46how difficult the combat is
00:52Before you take part in any battle or war
00:54you have to choose which six heroes to take with you
00:57You can choose any hero from your entire roster
01:00and you can mix and match
01:01any combination of class you might have
01:04Heroes can become injured
01:05if they are knocked unconscious in battle
01:07so you will have to rest them for a number of days
01:09before they are full strength again
01:12Before choosing a hero
01:13make sure you are familiar with their stats
01:15armor, strength, willpower, exertion and break
01:19Armor blocks damage
01:21Your strength minus their armor equals damage
01:25Strength is both damage and health
01:27If it drops to zero the unit will fall unconscious
01:31Willpower is spent to move further
01:34hit harder
01:36and perform abilities
01:37but does not replenish during combat
01:39Once you have spent all your willpower
01:41you will not be able to use a hero's special ability
01:45Exertion is the amount of willpower you can use on any given action
01:49Break is the amount of direct damage you can naturally do to an enemy's armor
01:54Lastly
01:55Make sure that you have promoted or applied extra stat points to any qualifying hero
02:00and equip any passive ability enhancing items
02:03that you might have picked up or bought along the way
02:05It's also useful to become familiar with each hero's special active ability
02:10and how it works in combination with the other heroes in the party
02:14When used in unison these can turn the tide of battle in an instant
02:20Once you have assembled your heroes you are ready to jump into battle
02:24The Banner Saga embraces turn based tactical combat
02:27which means each unit takes a turn to make their move
02:30similar to a game of chess
02:33The order in which the units will make their move is shown in the bottom left side of your screen
02:37in the initiative bar
02:39You can hit tab at the beginning of a battle
02:42to show how the enemies stats compare to your stats
02:45armor, strength and willpower are shown
02:49When it's your turn you can move, use an ability, attack or rest
02:56If you are in range and you choose to attack your enemy
02:59you can either attack their strength or break their armor
03:03The weaker their armor the more susceptible they will be when their strength is directly attacked
03:09Willpower can be used in a battle to boost actions
03:12For example, if you are just out of range to make an attack on an enemy
03:16you can use willpower to move within range
03:21Or you can add willpower to boost an actual attack on either armor or strength
03:27Willpower boosts are a limited resource however
03:30and are determined by your exertion stats
03:32so use it wisely
