00:00Hey guys, what's going on? I'm Jimmy Wizenhunt, game designer here on H1Z1.
00:05We just got back from E3, ran a bunch of demos over there.
00:07We focused a lot on showing off combat, vehicles, and building.
00:11So today we're going to run through that with you guys,
00:13so you can get the opportunity to see what we were doing over there,
00:16as well as we're going to be able to show the boat.
00:19We couldn't even do that at E3, so we're pretty stoked to show it off.
00:22So let's jump on in.
00:23Alright, so we're here in-game. This is H1Z1.
00:25For those of you guys not familiar, H1Z1 is a post-apocalyptic MMO survival game.
00:31It's kind of a mouthful, but it's what we're working on here at SOE.
00:34And as you can see, the world's pretty big, right?
00:36There's a lot of things that can happen here. The goal really is sandbox gameplay.
00:40We want everything to be super intuitive.
00:41Imagine you're dropped in the woods with less than what you have in your pockets right now.
00:45You've got an axe, you've got a flashlight.
00:47I'm cheating a little bit for the purpose of showing you guys all this.
00:50I have a backpack and some things in here that would typically take me a couple weeks
00:54to get all the materials for and craft so we can show that off.
00:57But yeah, so all you're going to start off with, you have a shirt, you've got your jeans here.
01:01And yeah, that's about all you got.
01:03So we wanted to be very, very intuitive in the way that I have an axe.
01:06I can go in my inventory here.
01:08I can see in the crafting window to make a campfire.
01:10I need wood, so I need to chop down a tree.
01:13And over the years, I've been trained playing video games that if there's an axe stuck in a stump
01:17or there's a tree and I have an axe that I just can't chop it down.
01:20Thankfully, I get an opportunity to work on a game where we can actually have some fun
01:24and be able to chop these trees down and get all the materials you need in a pretty easy way.
01:29Now, I want to point out that as I chop this thing down, you'll see it here in a bit,
01:32but they're going to fall and it's going to make a lot of noise.
01:35And as you're looking off in the distance, just imagine that one of these trees comes falling down right now.
01:39It alerts me to a couple of things.
01:40There's a player out there and he's in the middle of trying to get materials together.
01:44So I can go out there and I can jack his stuff I wanted to.
01:46I could hope that maybe he has something I need, or I could just avoid them altogether.
01:51Even just go out and try to make a friend.
01:53You've got to be careful of those type of situations.
01:55People get a little crazy in these games and it's definitely part of the fun.
01:58But as I run through here, I'm going to try to get the materials together to show off the bow
02:03because I'm actually going to need it.
02:05There's a zombie running up on me right now, as a matter of fact.
02:08Let's actually deal with this real quick.
02:11Since the last time that we showed a lot of this, they're actually quite a bit harder to kill.
02:15Made it look a little easy there.
02:17But so our discovery system is what starts your crafting, your crafting pathway.
02:21So discovery essentially, I'm going to throw a log in here that I got from that tree.
02:24I'm going to click discover and it's going to tell me that I can make wood planks.
02:27This is going to look a little linear at first, but now I made a wood plank.
02:32I'm going to take the wood plank, throw that in, and it's going to show me that I can make
02:36wood sticks.
02:37Now it's going to open up a little bit once I make one of these.
02:40So when I pulled this in, you notice a lot of the stuff grayed out.
02:44Now when I drag it in, I can combine that wood plank with a wood stick, which means now I
02:49have a new recipe.
02:50So I'm going to click discover and it's going to tell me that I can make an animal trap.
02:54Animal traps is something you throw on the ground and animals get trapped in it.
02:57You'll be able to pull them out, cook them, and have food that way.
03:00And maybe some fur and stuff as we move forward.
03:03But really what I'm focusing on right now is I want the bow.
03:07And I don't know how to make that yet.
03:08So I'm going to actually pull my shirt off here, which usually isn't going to be an initial option.
03:13You can, but you're going to lose a lot of space.
03:14I have a backpack, so we're going to hurry on along.
03:16I got some scraps of cloth out of that by salvaging.
03:20And so now I'm going to take the stick, I'm going to take the cloth, and then those two together
03:26are going to be a wooden bow.
03:29So I'm going to craft that out.
03:32And it should auto-equip.
03:33Yeah, there it is.
03:34Cool.
03:34So I am going to take these in.
03:38Crafting, here we go.
03:39And make a bunch of wood sticks, a bunch of wood planks, and then a bunch of wood sticks.
03:46I need to discover the fact that I can make arrows from sticks.
03:50Takes a little while.
03:53And now I have a bunch of arrows.
03:55So I have 15 arrows now.
03:57Cool.
03:57So we can move along now.
03:58I want to make sure that I got that out of the way quick because throughout this demo, we do
04:03play some things in the world.
04:04But every time we've run this demo at E3, we had no idea what to expect.
04:08We've seen very, very different situations.
04:09And a lot of it's due to the fact that we have some emergent AI in our game.
04:14So as you run around, you may see a zombie.
04:17Other times you might see 20.
04:19Or you might see nothing at all.
04:21And then you see a deer running out.
04:22And those 20 zombies were there last time.
04:24We're now chasing it directly at you.
04:25So it's a very, very dynamic experience, even while we're running demos at E3, which actually comes out to a
04:30lot of fun.
04:31It's not the same old thing every time.
04:33I'm going to throw this vehicle down real quick.
04:35And I'm going to jump on in.
04:37And when you find these vehicles in the world, they're typically going to be in different states of disrepair.
04:41So some of them are going to be missing a wheel, a battery, just different things that allow them to
04:46run.
04:46You're going to have to craft those items and put them inside the inventory of the vehicle to repair them
04:50and get them working again.
04:51They also do use gas.
04:52You can see at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, there's 95% right now.
04:56They're really gas-heavy right now.
04:58Of course, we do have the ragdoll in right now.
05:00All the zombies are rigged up for that.
05:01But you will do damage to your vehicle as you do this.
05:05You're not just some unstoppable zombie-killing juggernaut in a jeep.
05:09You will want to try to hold back on doing this all the time.
05:14However, I'm not going to have too much extended use out of this, so I'm going to have some fun.
05:18And as you move along through our world, you're going to find some survival camps, or survivor camps, where you
05:22can kind of tell they didn't make it through here.
05:24And in these areas, you can find various things.
05:26You can find things like pre-built campfires, and you can use those if you don't already have one.
05:30It's kind of nice and easy.
05:31And I'm going to try to run through here and see if we can find anything.
05:35You'll find containers like this in the world, as well as things actually spawning on top of vehicles or on
05:40the ground on shelves.
05:42And things will be kind of where you expect them.
05:44So you're going to find food in shelves.
05:45You're not going to find it kind of laying around, unless you're at a campsite and maybe around the campfire.
05:49Oh my god, I'm getting destroyed behind me.
05:52Making this look a little easy right now, zombies, and I think we want to continue down this path.
05:55It's pretty exciting.
05:56is that they're pretty rough to kill unless you shoot them directly in the head.
06:00And the bow does have drop.
06:01It is a skill-based weapon.
06:04At point blank, it does take a while to draw out the bow and actually get the arrow knocked and
06:10everything, as you can see here.
06:11It's not always the best decision to just hit them up close.
06:13So you can actually still push with the bow.
06:15You can push zombies back.
06:16You can also punch.
06:18But you need to right-click to actually pull that back.
06:21So I'm going to jump back in my vehicle here.
06:23Actually, it looks like I've taken some damage.
06:25I'm going to go around this direction.
06:28Just a little bit ago, I showed in my inventory I have a couple things that you normally wouldn't start
06:31with.
06:32Those are foundations.
06:33These particular foundations are stilt foundations.
06:37They're built to be used against hills and a little bit easier to place.
06:40And we'll show that right up here.
06:44We, at E3, were using our dew collectors as objects that snap onto foundations.
06:50And we actually found that we would rather have those to be something you can place into the world.
06:53And I'll show that right here.
06:55Let me jump on out real quick.
06:59I'm going to reach in my inventory.
07:00I'm going to grab one of these wood foundations, the stilt foundation.
07:02Now, this is a high-end foundation.
07:03This is going to take you a while to build, as you can imagine.
07:05You see all these planks on it.
07:07You're going to have to gather all those and put those together.
07:09So I'm going to put this down right here, go up our stairs, and I'm going to grab one of
07:14our pre-canned buildings.
07:15These will take a few more resources, but they're nice if you just want to plop down some storage on
07:19your property.
07:20Or you can door this off and just start to flesh it out using these buildings, as well as walls
07:25and the like.
07:26And the dew collector that we showed before is now placeable within the world.
07:29So you can actually find an area, or you can take over one of those campsites if you'd like, and
07:33just place that down there.
07:35So I am, what that will be used for is situations when it's raining outside or in the mornings, it'll
07:40collect some fresh water.
07:41I actually think, I did grab an empty bottle a little while ago.
07:44So I'm going to run on down to the lake down here.
07:46And I am going to put some water in it.
07:49And you'll see when I do this, it's going to be dirty water.
07:51You can imagine right now going and drinking out of your local pond or lake.
07:54It's not a good idea without actually filtering that out, boiling the water, killing all the bad stuff in it.
07:59And after the apocalypse, I'm sure it's going to be a lot worse.
08:02So I'm going to use this bottle, and it gives me dirty water out of this, because I'm standing here
08:05in the water.
08:06And if I drink that, it's going to do some damage to me.
08:08And I'll actually do that right now.
08:10It's going to do some damage to me, but it's also going to give me some hydration.
08:12So it's a little bit of a trade-off.
08:13You can filter that out with charcoal filters, filters and the like, boil the water.
08:18But the dew collector solves that problem.
08:20As you start crafting that sort of thing out of a tarp and wood, you'll be able to be more
08:24self-sufficient
08:25and not worry about the dirty water.
08:26You can collect fresh water that way when it's raining.
08:28Actually, while we're on the topic, every day we do, the system will pick what type of day it's going
08:35to be.
08:36It could be a rainy day, a sunny day.
08:38It could be darker when it's cloudy outside.
08:40And you can see it can vary anything from this, which is a very light rain, which actually we think
08:44you can see here,
08:45all the way up to something like this.
08:47And you can see it actually affects the environment.
08:49It's going to affect the dynamics of the vehicles.
08:50Your character's going to get wet.
08:51He can get cold if it's too bad outside.
08:53You need to stay dry.
08:55We've actually worked out the system because we don't want anything to be decoration to not rain underneath trees.
09:01So you'll be safe under here.
09:02Throw down a campfire and you'll be solid and try everything out.
09:05Cook your meal and all that fun stuff.
09:07So moving on forward here.
09:10I'm going to turn the lights back on.
09:12I'm going to see what's happening.
09:14We actually have some zombies that are typically in this area, but this is where it's so unpredictable.
09:18Sometimes a deer comes running through here, a wolf causes a ruckus, and they are running off.
09:22So let's see.
09:23Looks like there are some here.
09:26Let's see if we can hit this guy from this distance.
09:28Barely.
09:30And the rain also, it's also not just something that can affect your character and just be pretty on the
09:36ground.
09:36It actually affects how it looks during the day as far as the light and everything as well.
09:42So it is a little bit harder to hit these shots.
09:45I'm going to run up here and see if we can find anything.
09:47We had a gun up here for the demo.
09:49I'm actually glad that we don't have it anymore.
09:51I get to use the bow some more.
09:54And I'm actually not going to make it through.
09:55I'm a horrible shot with a bow, apparently.
09:57Regardless of the fact I work on it, I can't shoot worth a darn.
10:00So I'm going to run back down to my Jeep.
10:01I'm going to go around the corner up here and show you guys a little bit about our dynamic weather.
10:05And our time of day stuff, if you're not familiar with that, it is a full 24-hour day cycle.
10:10We do tune how long that lasts.
10:13And I'll speed that up and show you guys what the day...
10:15Oh my god.
10:15What the days and the nights look like.
10:19It's a huge difference in games life, depending on when you log in.
10:22We want to make sure that there are reasons to play at night as well.
10:25I'm actually just going to stop over here on this bridge and see if we can change the hour a
10:30little bit.
10:30This is a rainy day, and this is about noon on a rainy day.
10:33A really, really rainy day.
10:35Really Pacific Northwest, you can see there.
10:37And as it starts getting a little bit darker on in the day, let's say something like...
10:42Something like 10 o'clock.
10:44I'm sorry, 8 o'clock, rather.
10:468 o'clock at night, it starts getting pretty dark.
10:48And the darkest you'll see in our game is when it's raining outside and 3 a.m.
10:53And it gets pretty intense.
10:54You do start off with a flashlight.
10:56It will run out of battery.
10:58It has changed our game completely.
11:00If you hadn't seen anything from us in a while, we used to have a torch.
11:02We pulled the torch from the starting equipment because, frankly, everyone was on fire within 5 seconds.
11:08And so was everything else.
11:09So, flashlight, I think it looks a lot cooler.
11:11It adds a different feel to the game.
11:13And it's a better point light overall.
11:16But yeah, that is H1Z1 in a nutshell.
