00:47Ubisoft had a clear and lofty goal in mind as they built Far Cry 4, create the most authentic
00:52gaming experience ever.
00:54The dedicated developers in Montreal were step one.
00:58Immersion in the game's inspiration, the Himalayas, was step two.
01:02It was imperative to see the people, places and things that would help bring this game
01:06to life.
01:08Nepal suggests like a lot of different kinds of environments, right?
01:11How are you going to feel going from sort of the virtual world that you have created into
01:15the new world that we're going to?
01:17In my head I have this Wikipedia idea of what Nepal is, I've been reading about what makes
01:22it the way it is right now, what's been happening over the last ten years, the last thousand
01:27years.
01:28But I'm hoping that we can uncover something that isn't presented on the web.
01:32The expectations are going to be super high after Far Cry 3, we really want to push it
01:36and bring it to the next level.
01:39It's super important that the environment you're in feels believable, like you can look
01:43around and understand the space and it feels like a real place from the real world.
01:48So being able to go to some of those locations is super, super interesting and super useful,
01:53just to see how the ground crunches under your feet and just the tiny little textures like
01:58that.
01:58And we can try and bring that extra level of authenticity to it.
02:11Arriving in Kathmandu was intense.
02:14The end of the Nepali Civil War meant a mass migration into the city.
02:17And with it came mass pollution, overpopulation and the sense that an ancient city wasn't ready
02:23for modernity to be thrust upon it.
02:26Everyone seemed to be experiencing that sensory overload, too.
02:30It's visually super noisy.
02:31I'm having trouble processing everything that I'm seeing because I'm trying to remember
02:35it all.
02:35I'm like, that's useful.
02:36Well that's super useful.
02:37That post is incredible.
02:38That texture is awesome.
02:39Right now I'm just like, I'm just trying to absorb it all.
02:42Local rumor had it that an animal sacrifice was going to be happening to appease the gods
02:46after the monsoon.
02:47Or maybe just to appease the gods in general.
02:49It was sort of unclear.
02:50But Nepal has strong ties to its past.
02:54So attending an animal sacrifice is significant in understanding traditional Nepali culture.
02:59It was a perfect introduction to the country.
03:11So, we've made it to Dakshinakali Temple, where the goddess Kali asks for blood sacrifice
03:18from her devotees.
03:20That faces.
03:21The face only of Kali could look.
03:26So we're going to follow them to the altar, where that goat will be sacrificed to slake
03:32the thirst of Kali.
03:38It was certainly a normal cultural moment.
03:40But for a second, everything got pretty quiet.
03:50I was expecting a clean cut.
03:52But the whole slice and then guide.
03:57It's been super interesting to get this close to the source material.
04:01So, it's like it's the kind of experience that we can never normally get.
04:06And I haven't had working on the game before.
04:10I didn't realize the significance of bells, especially around temples and places of worship.
04:15In my head before I went, I had this like very stereotypical kind of soundscape of what
04:21a place of worship sounded like.
04:22I think what we'll end up with is something that's less like a stock movie soundtrack kind
04:28of vibe.
04:29And we'll capture something that's much more realistic.
04:32After a brief foray into animal sacrifice, a small plane was taken to Pokhara, a town famous
04:38for both being a gateway to the Himalayan highlands and the home base for Nepal's legendary
04:43fighting Gurkha.
04:50The legend of the Gurkha inspired the warriors created in the game.
05:10The young Gurkhas in training gave a sense of what the challenges and motivations were
05:15to join one of the world's most elite fighting forces.
05:18They were established by the British Empire in the mid-19th century and have fought alongside
05:22British special forces ever since.
05:25It's often said, if a man says he's not afraid of dying, he's either lying or is a Gurkha.
05:31Mark and Phil, you guys studied Gurkhas a lot as you were developing the game, right?
05:35Yeah.
05:36And so what is it like now actually meeting young dudes who are trying to be Gurkhas?
05:40It's interesting to meet the personalities behind that, just to see how dedicated people
05:46are to actually achieving that.
05:48They will try, these guys will try year after year after year to get in.
05:53The dedication is pretty incredible.
05:57I have been trying British Army four times and this is my last time.
06:00Gurkhas are very closely associated with the Kukuri, a curved, do-it-all weapon that's
06:05been referred to as the Gurkha Blade.
06:21Just a few years ago, a retired Gurkha successfully fought off 40 thieves who had hijacked a train,
06:28killing three of them and seriously injuring eight others, with just a Kukuri.
06:32It's also the primary blade used in Far Cry 4.
06:36We will try for Gurkhas if we are selected for British Army.
06:42It was becoming apparent that pride came with being a native of the Himalayas.
06:47As the journey continued towards the Gorilla Trail, the roads were getting narrower and more perilous.
06:53The conversations with the young Gurkhas weighed heavily on everyone's minds.
06:57There was a looming sense that an intense few days were to come, as the developers were going to meet
07:01the real people
07:02behind the game they wanted to create, people whose lives had been torn apart by the Civil War.
07:07.
07:10.
