00:00Aaron, coach, first, let's get some thoughts here on the 12-team tournament.
00:03Do you like the landscape of college football,
00:06and do you like the process on picking these 12 teams?
00:12I don't love it.
00:13I think that there's two things that we've got to fix a calendar,
00:17you know, when you talk about the landscape.
00:18I just don't like, you know, how much the season runs into late January.
00:23But when you think about the playoff window, I'm being a fan of a bigger playoff.
00:28I think we should have more teams in it.
00:31And I think we have to really look very hard at how we're picking these teams.
00:35The difference between who you play and your record is significant.
00:40And if you're playing a certain competition level, yeah, you're going to win 10 or 11 games,
00:46maybe, or 9 or 10 games, but then you see what happens.
00:48And you watch the same conferences compete in the same championships.
00:53I mean, you look at Miami, you look at Notre Dame, you look at Michigan,
00:57you look at Ohio State, you look at Indiana.
01:00I mean, those are the teams, Oregon, those are the teams that are playing.
01:03You know, those are the teams that are competing in these championships
01:06and obviously the top SEC programs.
01:09But I don't think the other conferences are going to be able to hang on.
01:12And I think we have to take a, I don't think we should continue to bring in
01:16programs that aren't playing in those top conferences.
01:20Coach, I got to ask you then, I'm going to go there with this.
01:23Hey, just because you line up 12 tomato cans doesn't mean you'd have the right
01:28to play in that 12-team tournament.
01:30And I mean, no disrespect to James Madison and Tulane, that's not a Big Ten schedule.
01:35That's not an SEC schedule.
01:37I mean, a 7-5 team in those conferences, yeah, they go 13-0 too.
01:43I mean, do you think programs like Tulane and James Madison should even be in the conversation?
01:49I mean, Coach, I don't want any shade on those guys, and I don't mean any disrespect to them.
01:54But, I mean, I'm not going to line up 12 teams and go like this.
01:58Well, we're going to beat 12 tomato cans, and they deserve to be in it just because of their record.
02:02I'm not there, are you?
02:05I'm not there either, no.
02:06I look at it as like, I really believe what we should do is we should take the power for
02:11whatever we want to
02:12and say you play nine conference games, your 10th game is against, you know,
02:17if you're in the Big Ten, you play nine in the Big Ten, you play one against the Big 12
02:21team,
02:21one against an ACC team, one against an SEC team, and those are your 12 games.
02:25And you can play one preseason game if you want against anybody you want.
02:29But outside of that, I don't see it.
02:31I don't see it, and I think the playoffs should consist of, it should be a power four playoff structure.
02:36And then I think those are the teams that should play in the playoffs.
02:39And then I think there should be a group of five playoff structure.
02:42And then I think there should be a, you know, the 1AA or FCS playoff structure.
02:48And I think it should just be three playoffs.
02:50I just don't see how we can say, you know, certain teams should be knocked out of the playoffs
02:55based on wins and, you know, a completely different type of schedule.
03:00Coach, I want you to take me into the rooms of recruiting because back in the day
03:05when I was getting recruited to Ohio State, Penn State, Notre Dame,
03:08and all these other places, nobody ever brought money up.
03:11You know, they may have brought something up where you might have an opportunity
03:14to get a job somewhere, do this and that, you know, on the side.
03:18Nobody really needed to know.
03:21How far and how deep into the conversation do the parents go like this?
03:26Now you're sitting maybe with an agent, and you've got to talk to these guys.
03:30How far into that process do the guy go, how much am I getting?
03:35Yeah, I would say the early part of recruiting is the same as you know it.
03:41And then through this process of we're getting close to committing,
03:46we're getting close to wanting to be a part of your program,
03:49now becomes what does the deal look like?
03:53And that's where I think, you know, that's where it changes.
03:56It all changes at that point in time because you've got them where you want them early.
04:00Or at some point, even late.
04:03And you're making the decision based on opportunity, based on staffing,
04:06based on program.
04:07And then all of a sudden you've got,
04:09can you just call my agent to get this deal done?
04:12And when you think you have a deal done, you don't have the deal done anymore
04:15because the agent sees it another way.
04:18And now you're in this, you know, discussions with an agent
04:22kind of going against sometimes what the kid wants.
